A First Celebration of its Kind – Uno de Mayo!!!
WEDNESDAY, May 1 – GENERAL MEETING
BOARD & PRESIDENT ANNUAL ELECTIONS
Wear a sombrero or bandanna or something Mexican
Knights of Columbus Hall, 103rd & Oklahoma Ave.
We’ve heard of Cinco de Mayo, but never Uno de Mayo, so it will be fun having this celebration for the first time in this country - right at our
Vagabond meeting. So wear something Mexican if you have it, but at least come and eat a Mexican meal of yummy Chicken Enchiladas,
rice, beans, roll, coffee for just $7 OR a Mexican Taco Salad, bread stix, and coffee for only $4.50. Drink Special? Of course, Margaritas
for $4, along with a special beer or white wine, $4.
Then, dance to the music of one of our longtime favorite bands, The Best of Everything. Bring a senor or senora guest to show off your club.
5:00 p.m. Bar Opens and Meal Service Starts
5:30 p.m. Free Roundtable on the Game of
Pickleball
6:45 p.m. Happy Hour and Signups
7:30 p.m. Meeting AND ELECTIONS
8:30 p.m. Party, Dancing and Signups
If your birthday is in May, we wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and will sing “Happy Birthday” to you at our meeting. We also ask those with
birthdays this month to bring a treat to share – DESSERT ITEMS ONLY: cookies, cake, brownies. Please place them on the Treats’ counter in
the meal room so all can enjoy after the meeting at 9 o’clock.
PICKLEBALL – What is it, How to Play, Tactics & More.
May 1st Roundtable, 5:30-6:40 pm, KC Hall
It was only a few short years ago that
Vagabond Dave Iselin came back from
Arizona for the summer and talked about
introducing PICKLEBALL to our club.
Immediately, questions. What is it, is it
really played with a pickle, how come the
name, how is it played, where to play it,
how many people can play, and more.
Well, the ground at least was broken for
pickleball to be a possible addition to our
Vagabond sporting activities. Who knew
then that in the next couple years,
pickleball would become the rage that it
has become here and across the country.
So now, Dave is coming back to tell us a
lot more about it and the equipment and
even how the game is played. An
incredibly interesting and fun Roundtable,
so make sure that you don’t miss it.
Questions? Ron Sonntag, 414-788-4907,
or ron@rspr.com. Dinner will be served
from 5 pm, so eat while listening.

Come Dance With Me.
I
t has been my honor to be your President
(for the fourth time) and now it is time for
me to invite you to: “Come Dance With
Me”. It is time for me to leave the Board
and once again be a “Wonderful
Member” of this great club.
I got the title of this article while sitting in
church. The sermon was about how we all
join together and help each other to do
wonderful things. I thought about the
‘Gifts’ I have been given by the Vagabonds
and felt blessed. You are all Vagabond
Gifts. We (you and I) need to take action
to make goodness in our lives. So, please
“Come Dance With Me”. Become an
active member of the club. Join In, help,
assist, and most of all, become a member
of the Board. Being a Board member is a
high calling. We need new perspectives.
We need new insights to keep our club
fresh, alive, and to make it continue for
another 55 years. Honored to have been
your President, - Bill Gehweiler

Sat., Aug. 17 - Mon., Sept. 2, 2013 – $4,994
The 55th Anniversary Presents a
Nostalgic Return to Yesteryear
Maifest at Hart Park, Sat., June 8
Join 40 fellow Vagabonds as some discover and others rediscover
the magic of Stockholm, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and the
beautiful Coast of Norway on this 17-day adventure of a lifetime.
We fly non-stop on SAS Airlines from O’Hare to “quaint and
fashionable” Stockholm - 3 nights at the Hilton Stockholm Slussen
Five Star Hotel. Then, non-stop to Amsterdam, known best for its
“canals, tulips and cafes all set in a wonderful architectural
environment,” staying at the conveniently located Amsterdam
Marriott Five Star Hotel. Next, non-stop to Copenhagen to board
our luxury Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship for a wonderful 7 night
phenomenal Fjords and 5 cities cruise up the coast of Norway.
We stop at Oslo (Capital of Norway), Bergen, Alesund, Geiranger,
and Stavanger. An outside cabin is included in the cost of the trip.
Inside (subtract $140 pp) and Balcony (add $790 pp - limited
availability) cabins are also available.
For many years, our club had an annual event at Hart Park that
was one of the biggest annual events in club history. It was called
Maifest (an old German celebration) that featured a day of revelry
including outdoor games like tennis, volleyball, bocce, badminton,
water balloons, musical chairs, and so on, plus indoor/outdoor
games like sheepshead, dominoes, cribbage, Scrabble, and
whatever. Then all of that was followed by a big meal and dance
in the hall there, and there was beer, soda, wine, water, snacks all
afternoon, plus the meal of brats, burgers, hot dogs, potato and
other salads, desserts, and more (all prepared and cooked by
Diane Zarse back then and again this year!!!). A totally fun day –
and we’re doing it once more for one day this year to help
celebrate our club’s 55th anniversary. It’s going to be a blast, with
all of those games, drinks through the day, 8 tennis courts reserved
just for us, a really fun game called a Cakewalk (you just have to
see this – what a game), indoor line dance lessons and line
dancing fun inside, and then concluding with the meal and a 50s
Sock Hop in the hall with our favorite DJ Alan (Elvis) Graveen. All
of that fun for just $10, plus whatever you spend on food and
drinks. We’re also asking for a $5 contribution from the tennis
players, with tennis available for up to four hours! (We’ll have
courts for all levels of players.)
Docking back in Copenhagen early on Saturday, we will spend
Saturday and Sunday night in this beautiful “City of Magic and
Enchantment” at downtown Radisson Blu Royal 5 star hotel. We
will leave Norway on Monday, our Labor Day, September 2nd,
and also arrive back in Chicago, non-stop, Monday afternoon.
Trip includes: Non-stop air, land transportation to and from O’Hare
and the airports. Port to and from the hotels. Panoramic Bus Tour in
Stockholm, Amsterdam and Copenhagen; 8 nights in 5 Star Deluxe
rooms with breakfast. Concierge Club Access in Stockholm and
Amsterdam. Hilton Deluxe rooms are King or King with Rollaway.
Many extras still in the planning stage – parties, dinners, etc. Cruise
includes: 7 nights, all meals and all the amenities you would expect
to find on a luxury cruise ship. Trip does not include: Port taxes,
possible but not expected, minimal ship and/or air fuel surcharges,
Cruise optional tours at cruise stops, meals not indicated above &
tips. Possible fluctuations in exchange rates are a possibility since
some items are being paid for in foreign currency.
The place is ours for the day from noon to 11 pm, with the tennis
going from 2-6 pm, the outdoor games will go from 2-4, the line
dancing will go from 3:30 to 5, the card games and other board
games will go from 2-5, the meal from 5-7, and the Sock Hop will go
from 7 till 10, with jitterbug songs, ballads, hula hoop contest, limbo,
the twist, the stroll, and almost anything you want to request, too.
Send checks made out to VSSC, along with a self-addressed,
stamped envelope, to Lou Grubich, 1505 S. 124th St., #6, New
Berlin, WI 53151. $10 a person, $15 if you also want to play
tennis (any time up to 4 hours!). Questions or wanting to help, call
Ron Sonntag, 414-788-4907, or email ron@rspr.com. We need a
few people to help with food, beverages, games, and line
dancing. Don’t miss this Maifest to wait for next year, because
there may never be another one!
Trip opened April 1st. Lots of interest! This trip is expected to fill
quickly, but there still may be space available as you read this article.
Send a $100 check payable to Vagabond Ski & Social Club, Inc.,

above) - to Trip Leader Bob Spindell – 1626 N Prospect Ave. #2209

FINANCE & BYLAWS
Sue
Cummings
Candidates for the Board
Sue Cummings
I have served on the Board of Directors for
the past year as Finance and Bylaws
Director. I am responsible for the ads in the
Directory and Life newsletter plus taking
care of the yearly Board election. I have
been in the club since 2002 and have
participated in many events which include
tennis, hikes, walks, travel, picnics, theater
and many more. I have organized events
for the club such as day trips, Mexico,
picnics, theater, summer walks, tours, etc. I
will gladly continue to contribute time on
the Board for the great success of our club.
special people. Over these 30 years, I have
led several events, the summer tennis league,
served on the Board of Directors and cooked
17 turkey breasts for a sailing night. I am
running for the Board because I believe in all
the opportunities that the Vagabonds provide
for its members to make their lives richer.
Everyone who volunteers to help out is
repaid in kindness and friendship. I would
like to help the club continue its mission to
provide fun filled activities for active adults. I
would appreciate your vote on May 1st.
Thank you.
Linda Horn
Pat Ellingson
I have been a member of
the Vagabonds for 30
years. I have skied,
bowled, traveled, played
tennis and attended many
club sponsored events all of which provided
me with the opportunity to meet some very
I joined this wonderful
club several years ago,
and have enjoyed the
wide variety of events,
trips, and activities that the
Vagabonds offer. There truly is something
for everyone, and there is no other club like
it. I took tennis lessons with the Vagabonds
4
5 years ago and have been participating in
various tennis activities ever since. I have
attended many various events and trips
since joining the club. I have met wonderful
people and made many friends through the
Vagabonds. Realizing that it is the people
who volunteer to run events that keep this
great club going, I became more involved
by leading events and have lead several
tennis parties over the past few years. It is a
great way to learn more about how the
Vagabonds work and meet even more
people. During my working life I was a
project manager for a large corporation,
and since retirement have served as both
Secretary and Treasurer of my
condominium Board of Directors, am past
president of two service organizations, and
treasurer of another. It would be a privilege
to serve on the Vagabond Board, and have
an opportunity to give back to a club that
has given so much to me. I would very
much appreciate your vote. Thank you.
Dave Nicholson
I’ve enjoyed my past 9
years with the
Vagabonds. I even met
my wonderful wife on a
Vagabond trip to Switzerland. Who
wouldn’t love being with active people,
and the Vagabonds are that. I have been
active in starting up, running and holding
leadership positions in many organizations
for more than 40 years. I volunteered to
take over the Meetings Director duties after
Ron’s untimely death, because there was a
need to keep the meetings running
smoothly and I had been Meeting’s
Director in the past. I’ll be open to
suggestions and I’ll be there to listen. Let’s
keep the Vagabonds an active and
enjoyable organization. Thank You
Pat Walslager
I am running for a third
term on the Board of
Dirctors for the Vagabond
Ski & Social Club. I have
been the treasurer for the
past four years. I joined this great club in
2003. Over the years, I have been on the
bowling league and have traveled down
the Danube, Amazon and Milwaukee
Rivers, spent over two weeks in the
Mideast, toured Mayan Ruins in Mexico on
the East and Puerto Vallarta on the west,
spent a weekend in New York city,
celebrated New Year’s Eve in Red Wing,
MN, picnicked at Devil’s Lake, and sailed
around the Milwaukee Harbor with this
great group. I am not a skier, but enjoy all
the social activities. For my qualifications, I
am a CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
with over 30 years of experience. I ran my
own accounting firm for over 25 years and
currently work for Milwaukee County in the
Airport Division as the Deputy Director
overseeing the accounting and budget
functions for the division. I hope to continue
to serve you in some capacity on the Board
for the next two years. So I am asking for
your support and vote to continue on the
Board of Directors for a third term.
Ron Sonntag (Running
For the Board and For
President)
Why am I deciding to run
again for the Board of this
club and then for President another time? I
guess it’s because my heart keeps telling me to
give more because I believe so strongly in the
wonderful things this club provides to people
and because of all the terrific members who
love the club and want to keep it a strong,
solid organization. So I’m willing and
wanting to give more, and I feel I have a lot
more to offer. I’ve been a member of this club
for about 15 years now, and I’ve served the
club as a Board member for 10 of those
years: as Meetings Director, Membership
Director, Vice President, and also as President
for five of those years. In that time, I’ve
created many fun and other things for the
club, such as themes for the meetings, the
singing of Happy Birthday at meetings, the
bringing of birthday treats, Saturday
breakfasts, Sunday hikes that have now gone
on for almost 14 straight years, arranged for
the club to move from the Zoo to the KC Hall
and negotiated a deal for no rent, have
booked the bands for years for the meetings
and still do, arrange monthly for meals at our
meetings and a drink of the month, the
wearing of a special color or something fun
to the meetings, created and continue booking
the monthly Roundtable speakers for members
to enjoy, ran a highly successful and nostalgiafilled 50th Anniversary Celebration as
Chairman five years ago and am the
Chairman of this year’s 55th Anniversary
Celebration, have run trips upon trips across
this country to New York several times,
Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans, San
Antonio, Seattle, Phoenix, and more, and to
Mexico and Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon
River, also have brought Festival City
Symphony concerts to the club for over 10
years, created Zany Bowling that has become
a popular tradition, created golf scrambles
years ago that continue in the club, ran
Iroquois and other boat cruise parties, tennis
parties, bike rides, started Saturday Morning
Tennis at West Allis Hale and Monday
Evening Tennis at Elm Grove, revamped the
Life newsletter years ago from a small format
to the magazine style of today. Many receive
my frequent email notices to club members
about club activities and things to do and
news about members to keep people
informed. I maintain the list and send out the
monthly electronic Life newsletter via email
each month, etc., etc. But you know
something? I still love it and want to continue
doing more for you as members and for the
club. In addition, I have some new ideas that
5
I think will make many of you very happy and
help streamline club operations for you as
members and for the club as a whole. Most of
all, I’m asking for your vote for the Board and
then, if elected to the Board, for your vote for
President again because I want our club to
become even more fun than it already is, to
make sure we are keeping in touch with
members so they don’t feel isolated or not a
part of the club and leave it, and to make the
Vaga-BOND even stronger among us all. This
is a great club, a special club, and I believe
the best club of its kind in the country, and I
want to keep it that way and do things to help
insure that continuation. I’d appreciate your
vote and promise to serve you not only well
but also in ways that will benefit all of you.
Helen Hankwitz (Running
for President)
I joined the Vagabond Ski
Club in the late 70’s and
soon after took ski lessons
at Sunburst and learned
how to ski. I made a lot of friends by going
on ski trips as well as partaking in many
other activities. Within a year of joining I
started running the annual Sailing Night,
and still do this. In 1984 I moved to Arizona
and obtained a Master’s degree, and
worked out West for the next 13 years. In
1997 I returned to Milwaukee and re-joined
my Vagabond friends. My background is
varied. I was trained and worked as a
social worker, a mortgage broker, a real
estate agent, and also ran my own export
business exporting commodities to the
Russian Far East. I have been on the
Vagabond Board of Directors for the past 4
years where I have been Social Activities
Director. As those of you who have been
members for awhile know, there has been an
increase in the number and variety of social
events. I co-organized event leader training
and have been running training for the past
three years. I enjoy my position and have
made a lot of friends in the club. My plans
for the future of the club include getting
newer members more involved in the club as
well as investigating possibilities for the use
of credit cards for dues payment. I would
appreciate your vote for me for president.

Zany Bowling Party Returns
Sat., May18th – 6 pm
as part of the 55th Anniversary
of Vagabonds
So you say you haven’t bowled in years or
never have. So you say you bowl, but
you’re no good at it. Well, none of that
really matters for this fun Vagabond
bowling party that’s become a Vag
tradition because this one’s just for fun!
Three games of bowling, with one a 9-pin
tap game (meaning that if you get 9 or 10
pins down on the 1st ball, you get a strike),
a 2nd game will be 8-pin tap (8 or 9 or 10
pins down counts as a strike), and the 3rd
game will be a LEASTER, meaning that you
try to get the fewest pins down (BUT a
gutter ball on the 1st ball is a strike or on
the 2nd is a spare!!!). Wow, so you must
keep the ball out of the gutter and still try to
get as few pins as you can! No need to be
a team, just sign up as a single, couple,
triple, and we’ll team you or up to 4 or 5 to
a team. We’ll have some fun prizes for
good and bad and treats as well. To top it
off, the whole night is cheap, too. Just $15
a person for the three games, shoe rental,
a ball to use, prizes, and snacks. This one’s
going to be fun, fun, fun.
Remember how excited you got when you
got a strike (if ever)? Well, experience that
fun again this night. Send your check for

1. We are returning
to Songbird Hills
for our league play.
2. The cost is $250 for the 16 weeks of
golf, with beverage.
3. We will be having two parties and the
dates have been set.
I don't know if any of you played Songbird
Hills last year, but the course was in great
shape, unlike the conditions at Willow Run
– so we decided to move to a course that is
well kept and costs slightly less to play. Tee
times will be the same as last year, starting
at 2 pm with the last tee time at 3:15 pm.
We will continue to sign up on a first-come,
first-out basis. Players who wish to golf 18
holes will get a discounted rate on the
extra 9. We will be playing alternate
nines. Golf will begin on Wednesday, May
22nd and finish on September 4th –
barring any rain dates. Our two parties
will be catered at Songbird and the dates
are July 10th and Sept.11th. Guests are
welcome at the parties for a fee – to be
determined. If you are interested in joining
the league, send your Event Coupon, a self
addressed stamped envelope, and your
check for $250.00 to: Elaine Haberichter,
262-691-2602, W289N3114 West
Lakeside Dr., Pewaukee, WI 53072. If you
are interested in being a substitute golfer,
the cost is $35.00 and includes joining in
for the parties. Subs should be willing to
golf if called, and then pay the person they
are subbing for $11.00. We also require a
SASE with the coupon. Registration closes
April 15th. Any questions, call Elaine or
my irrepressible co-leader, Arlene Kaul,

summer bike rides. Anyone who has led a
ride in the past, or for those who would like
to lead a ride for the first time, they are
encouraged to sign up now for the best
choice of dates. Rides are scheduled from
June through September, usually on
Sundays, but maybe someone would like to

12-15 miles or longer, or perhaps a
combination short and long ride to
accommodate riders with different abilities.
After the ride, we gather at a local pub or
restaurant for food, beverages and
camaraderie. Leaders will need to send me
a description of the ride suitable for the
newsletter. For more information or to
schedule a date please call Mel Malcolm

Elementary School. Tennis courts are just
