I’m always proud to be part of the University’s graduation ceremonies. They signify a time for celebration for graduates and their families and acknowledge the hard work that has been done by each student to achieve a meaningful qualification. Graduation brings you to a cross-roads in your busy lives, and as you embark on new careers which I hope will be challenging and rewarding, I know you will draw on the learning and understandings you have gained from studying at Waikato. I encourage you all to embrace all the good opportunities that come your way, to be unafraid to tackle new obstacles and to push yourselves to succeed, wherever you may be. Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ Chancellor University of Waikato The University of Waikato is a relatively new institution, having recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding. But like all universities, it is part of a tradition of scholarship, teaching and recognition of student achievement that can be traced back to the Middle Ages more than 800 years ago. Each institution develops its own approaches to recognising student achievement reflecting local custom and circumstance, integrating these into the historical traditions that are a part of all university graduation ceremonies. I welcome all friends and family who have come from around New Zealand and around the world to attend this graduation ceremony. I trust that all graduates will take away fond memories of their time at the University of Waikato. No matter where you end up living and working, I hope you will keep in touch with your alma mater and make time to reconnect with fellow alumni who can be found living and working all over the world. GRADUATION PROGRAMME APRIL 2015 5 Honorary Doctorates An Honorary Doctorate is the most prestigious award that the University of Waikato can bestow. For their significant contribution to the University, the Waikato region and the wider New Zealand community, the University is pleased to award the following worthy recipient: MR RICHARD TONKS CONFERRED 15 APRIL Richard ‘Dick’ Tonks, MNZM, was born in Whanganui and as a rower, won a silver medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich in the coxless four. After retiring as a competitive rower he turned to coaching, with his coaching methods based on the philosophy of ‘miles make champions’ first advocated by athletics coach Arthur Lydiard. Mr Tonks has coached New Zealand rowing crews at the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics and has been hugely influential on some of our best rowers, including Philippa Baker, Brenda Lawson, Rob Waddell, Hamish Bond, Eric Murray, Mahe Drysdale, and Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell. He has won five Halberg awards for coach of the year and was voted International Rowing Federation coach of the year and world rowing coach of the year in 2005, 2010 and 2012. Rowers under his guidance have won around 30 Olympic and World Championship medals since 1994. In the 2003 New Year Honours he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rowing. Mr Tonks has clearly fulfilled the criteria for this award and proved himself a worthy recipient of the title of Honorary Doctor at the University of Waikato. 6 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO Fanfare The Processional Fanfare for brass quintet and percussion was written by Associate Professor Martin Lodge from the University of Waikato’s Conservatorium of Music. It was written to mark the University of Waikato’s 50th anniversary, celebrated in 2014. The work is original except for a snippet of the popular graduation song Gaudeamus Igitur (see page 77), inserted by Associate Professor Lodge to acknowledge the great academic tradition of universities in the western world. The Processional Fanfare is played as the University staff ceremonially enter the hall and take the stage for graduation. It is anticipated that the fanfare will become part of University of Waikato graduation tradition. Pou Whenua The ceremonial carved Māori mace being used in today’s graduation ceremony represents the strong links between the University and Māori. In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato was established, Kīngitanga head Koroki invited founding University of Waikato Chancellor and Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20 University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia. There he presented the fledgling institution with the carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in 1932. When not being used, the taonga sits in pride of place at the head of the University Council chamber. By 1964 ‘the branch’ had become a full university and in 1965 the University of Waikato was officially opened by the then Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson (later Lord Ballantrae). There were 181 enrolments that year. Our Vision The University of Waikato Vision is to offer: » Excellence – to provide worldclass teaching and research. Buildings, student enrolments and subject offerings grew steadily and by 2014, the University’s golden jubilee year, there were 12,500 students, and almost 4,000 students took part in graduation ceremonies. » Distinctiveness – to have a unique place in tertiary education. The University has always prided itself on being a breeding ground for independent thought and progressive learning. In 1989 (with a little help from NASA) Waikato connected New Zealand to the Internet before going on to become the first university in New Zealand to have cyber-graduates, completing their teaching degrees online. » International connectedness – to be benchmarked against the best. Since 1988 the University has had a presence in the Bay of Plenty and has joined with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Waiariki Polytechnic to form the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Partnership with plans afoot for a new campus in downtown Tauranga. At the same time, the University has developed a strong international focus, welcoming students from all over the world and establishing partnerships and links with more than 200 overseas universities. THE CAMPUS The Hamilton campus covers 65 hectares and is a source of community pride. The grounds include sports fields, walkways, lakes, extensive gardens and more than 6,000 trees. Some of the older buildings have been refurbished in recent years to meet the needs of 21st century students, including the library which has been transformed into the Student Centre. The building has a five Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council, recognising the environmental and sustainable features of its design. By the end of 2015 Te Piringa - Faculty of Law will have a new home, crossing Hillcrest Road to a new multi-million dollar, five-storey tower block that will also house Waikato Management School’s Centre for Corporate and Executive Education. It too will incorporate sustainable features, including a living lawn roof for rooms below ground level, natural ventilation and glazed corridor walls for natural lighting. 74 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO To achieve this we invest in the best people in every role, the best facilities and the best systems and structures which allow us to operate a financial model that is sustainable. Our Commitment The University of Waikato is committed to creating and building knowledge for the future. We deliver a world-class education and research portfolio within a dynamic and distinctive university environment with strong international connections. The University of Waikato/Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato plays an essential leadership role in the prosperity of our region and our country. We are a New Zealand institution that looks at the world from a New Zealand perspective. We sit at the heart of a community of strong regional partnerships and take pride in the extent to which we reflect and serve the strengths and interests of our region. We are also an international university. We consciously measure our performance against internationally established criteria, and our teachers, researchers and students inspire, and are inspired by, an international community of scholars. We are committed to the recruitment and retention of world-class staff who excel at teaching, research and management in areas that are of particular strategic value to New Zealand. We pursue a research and research-management strategy that supports our country's nation-building policies and promises a generous return in terms of our nation's identity and the wealth and wellbeing of New Zealanders. We adhere to the concept of a university education that is, by definition, research-led. Through sustained research intensity and the attraction of high levels of external research funding from public sector and industry sources, we aim to maintain a highly competitive research profile. We are committed to meaningful partnerships under the Treaty of Waitangi and to providing leadership in research, scholarship and education relevant to the needs and aspirations of iwi and Māori communities. We have developed, or are in the process of developing, world-class research platforms that take us through the research pipeline from discovery to application and commercialisation. Sustainability in all its forms – environmental, economic, social and cultural – is a strong emerging theme in many of these research platforms. By its nature, sustainability is future-focused and rooted in new ways of thinking and new ways of tackling old problems. The University of Waikato is proud to lay claim to leading the way to a sustainable future. World Rankings Rankings and Reputation International rankings are based on teaching, research, citations, industry outcomes, innovation and international outlook, and the University of Waikato sits in the 351-400 band, as measured by the influential UK-based Times Higher Education organisation (THE). THE ranks the University of Waikato 61st out of 100 "most international" universities in the world. THE uses the international outlook indicators from its world rankings and considers how many international students the university has, how many international staff teach and research there, and the proportion of research papers being generated with an international co-author. Five of Waikato’s subject areas are ranked in the top 150 worldwide among 800 universities as ranked by QS World University Rankings. Education sits at 46, while the other four, Modern Languages, Economics and Econometrics, Law, and Computer Science and Information Systems sit in the 101-150 band. Student satisfaction In 2014, a survey of 3,257 domestic students scored the University of Waikato highly in terms of learning, living, support and arrival on campus. The survey found 93% of students were either satisfied or very satisfied overall with the university. Teaching quality scored highly, as did the campus environment, accommodation and overall support. The most recent international student survey, carried out in 2013, canvassed 193 universities in 16 countries and asked 155,000 current international students about their experiences studying overseas. At the University of Waikato 82% of respondents said they would recommend our university to others and more than 90% of those students surveyed were satisfied with their experience at the University of Waikato. International students also ranked the University of Waikato 11th in the world for careers office support. GRADUATION PROGRAMME APRIL 2015 75 Ceremonial Traditions Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century when the first universities emerged in Europe. The organisation of medieval universities was modelled on the established institutions of the day – the church, the monastery and the guild. Latin was the language used by medieval scholars, and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and ‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas means a guild or union, and universities started as a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community of teachers and scholars. The word graduate comes from the Latin word gradus, which means step. Admission to study a bachelors degree was the first step taken towards completing a university education. The second step was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral, originally granted teaching licences. CEREMONIAL ROBES AND ACADEMIC DRESS In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of universities was recognised and sanctioned by civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn by graduates and university staff today reflect this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday medieval garment, although the coloured lining was a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university and degree. University of Waikato Academic Dress Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor Black gown with red velvet facings and gold piping; three red velvet chevrons with gold piping on the sleeves; black Tudor bonnet with gold cord and tassel. Pro-Chancellor Black gown with lining of gold satin; gold button and cord just above the sleeves which are lined with black satin; black Tudor bonnet with gold cord and tassel. HonD Red gown with black facings; black Tudor bonnet with gold cord and tassel. DLit, DSc Crimson gown; crimson hood with crimson lining; black Tudor bonnet with gold cord and tassel. PhD, EdD and SJD Maroon gown; crimson hood with crimson lining; black Tudor bonnet. MPhil Black gown; crimson hood with crimson lining; black mortarboard. Note: Those who graduated with a DPhil prior to 1992 are entitled to wear a black mortarboard or a black Tudor bonnet. Masters Black gown; gold hood with gold lining; black mortarboard.
