Summer 2013 Foundation Forum SMEF is OUR Local Option T he Shawnee Mission Education Foundation offers the opportunity to create our own “local control” option without waiting for action from the Kansas Legislature. Shawnee Mission is, and has been for a long time, a nationally recognized school district and community. Investing in our schools, exercising our personal “local control” through the work of the Foundation, helps keep Shawnee Mission on the cutting edge of educational opportunities. We develop our local workforce and protect our property values. The Foundation is the voice of those who support excellence in education through tax deductible donations. The Foundation provides ‘the power of the purse in a local manner.’ SMSD patrons can assert local control without waiting for legislative remedy to the school finance formula. Whatever your interest, SMEF is the conduit for supporting our public schools. Melissa Rooker 25th District KS State Representative The current school finance formula is not working for Shawnee Mission. With equalization, SMSD continues to sit in the bottom 10% of districts for state aid dollars per student. Since 1992, when the current school finance formula went into effect, Shawnee Mission patrons have been advocating for increased “local control” – the ability for citizens to choose to tax themselves for what they deem important. The legislature has repeatedly denied this opportunity. SMEF is your voice! SMSD continues to produce stellar results, is a responsible steward of the funds received by the state and is a good investment. Invest in Shawnee Mission students. President's Message SMEF Protect Shawnee Mission T here have been many changes in our schools through the years. Our fierce belief in the future, visionary leadership and the will to make a personal financial commitment can grow a $20 million endowment that will make a $1 million difference for students every year. And, that is just the beginning. Our investment of $750 for each Shawnee Mission student achieves that endowment. Only if we start now does that future become a reality. Dr. Chalender was an educator for more than 40 years, retiring as associate superintendent in 1983, and served on the Mainstreet Board of Directors for 37 years, 30 as chairman. “It is our honor to pay tribute to Jack. Art work and science projects were part of this year’s R & D Forum. Funding gave students assistance for project supplies. Thanks to a grant from SMEF, student’s lives were enriched by art! Through field trips to various museums and points of interest in KC, students had the opportunity to see the impact art can have on a culture and consider future careers in art related fields. These opportunities were previously cut from the SMSD budget.
