WTVR - Urban Outfitters
I—s—s—u—e 1 W T V R SPRING 2011 Chaz Bundick’s second release as Toro Y Moi is Underneath the Pine, and we had the exclusive preview. We caught up the 24-year-old South Carolina native to talk inspirational Tupac napkins and why he also let us make his video for “New Beat.” What made you decide to let Urban Outfitters make your video? What appealed to me about deciding to work with Urban for the video was knowing the amount of exposure it would get, and the fact that we had a decent budget to fit our needs. I talked to the videographer about several ideas, and we ended up with something that was both cinematic and fun. What can you tell us about the video? Well, I can tell you we’ll be performing in it. As for a narrative, it kind of just has an ‘80s dance movie vibe. You were pretty young when you started writing music. Was learning to play instruments your idea or your parents? A combination of both. My mom made me take piano lessons at age eight and I really hated it. I ended up not practicing and just writing and making stuff up, but that led me want to record the things I would make up. When did you start working on this album? I pretty much started writing it right when Causers [of This] came out. I feel like I always go to the same place lyrically; it’s about those same people: friends, family, girlfriends. I’m trying to change my approach to lyrics, because people change, but I still don’t know What’s the most embarrassing song on your where I’m going just yet. iPod? 2011 What is one of your favorite music videos? I can see it now, it’s one of the Michael Jackson videos. He’s dancing in front a smoke machine and laser lights in an all-sequin jumpsuit. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The drummer of our band has a signed napkin by Tupac, so I’ll say Tupac once told my friend to “keep his head up.” So I keep my head up. Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin gained their own following with just three songs. vimeo.com/urbanoutfitters What do you think is the best way for people to listen to the album? I always like to listen to music while driving, especially at night, but I think all music sounds good that way. It’s good “walking around” music, with more traditional songs than Causers[of This] because there are live instruments this time. Cults I think I have some Thursday on there–I’ve been trying to get that off for the longest time. blog.urbanoutfitters.com Toro y Moi’s Toro Y Moi was a name you made up during a car ride with your parents. Was that just a really boring car ride? That whole weekend I was trying to think of something. I don’t know exactly what I saw, but something sparked it. I liked to doodle band names and logos—I would draw the Weezer “W” all over everything—and the letters in Toro Y Moi looked cool as a drawing. How did you two meet? Madeline: Brian was my brother’s friend, and I think my brother and my mom were trying to keep me away from him because they thought he was a bad kid. Your brother wanted to keep you guys apart? Brian: He told me in no uncertain terms to stay away from his sister. Ha, ok! So how did you start making music together? Brian: Right when we met, I drove her up to San Francisco from San Diego, and during drive we found out we liked the same stuff. Madeline: Or that we didn’t. Brian: We started making up songs, and eventu- Brian, so you’ve been in bands since you were 13? What did it feel like to Brian: Just like any other suddenly realize every- kid from the suburbs. one was listening to your But one of them was a music? Madeline: It was stressful Slayer cover band! Brian: That was my first band! Growing up in Atlanta, there were only seven or eight skatepunk kids at the school, so we stuck together so we wouldn’t get beat up. So we’d hang out in my basement and play Rancid and Slayer songs. ally turned it into something real. Who are some other musical couples you guys admire? Madeline: Ike and Tina! We’re most like them. What are you guys most looking forward to in 2011? at first. We had bloggers Brian: Playing Coachella– emailing us saying, ‘Hey, do that’s been a secret dream you have any more songs we’d never admit because we could write about or put we never thought it could up?’ We felt pressured at happen. And SXSW—so first, but after the first week far we have 11 shows! we got over it and were like, ‘We’ll just do whatever we were doing.’ Photographer and founder of Tiny Vices, Tim Barber shot our most recent catalog in Los Angeles. The Way You Wore It: Our clothes on you Like us on Facebook to show us how you wore it: www.facebook.com/urbanoutfitters We asked the bands playing our Back Lot shows what they’d spend their cash on if they won the lottery en route to Austin. Oberhofer: Relocate to Atlantis. LSTN #13 Lower Dens: I’d get a trailer, knock down a wall, put some furniture out there, put up some Christmas lights and invite the weirdos over. La Sera: Buy everyone a big dinner and then put the rest in Dom: savings! Haha, I’m no fun. Buy TMZ. Sun Airway: We’d probably spend the money on nice brunches. Also, buying up all the Prince Rama: Probably sign up for an immortality workshop from Wiley Brooks. blog.urbanoutfitters.com/austin Beach Fossils: Buy a major label and sign Beach Fossils to it so we can lose our fans and get that cool “sell-out” cred. Braids: Buy fancy dinners, buy a horse and name it Texas. 2011 Times New Viking: Buy a Waffle House franchise, and employ every Krystal in the tri-state area. Cloud Nothings: Save it ‘till we get to Austin then blow it all on old punk and psych 45s at Breakaway Records. lstn.urbanoutfitters.com Live in Austin 2011 Ten-gallon cowboy hats! where” / The Luyas “Tiny Head” / White Fence “Lillian (Wont You Play Drums?)” / The Soft Moon “Breathe The Fire” / Chain & the Gang “Bill for the Use of a Body” / FREE MUSIC!
