T
his family issue of Celeb Staff features a big thing going on in
Hollywood right now: having babies. It seems like every time
you turn around another celebrity is expecting or has just had
a baby. Babies are really “in.” Some of these moms have been
trying to have a child for a while and some are just adding to
their brood. But one thing is for sure: a new baby will certainly
change family dynamics. Just think about the changes Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
go through every time they add another child to their family. Our feature focuses
on the resources available to celebrity families when they bring home that new
little bundle of joy (page 48).
It is never too early to teach children about responsibility, even if they are
growing in wealthy homes. Justin Womack highlights the fact that any age is a
good one to start tackling chores in “Let There Be Chores” (page 31).
As responsible adults we need to plan ahead for our approaching golden years. It
is a fact that people are living longer every year, so we need to give some thought
to how we can retire in style. Miriam Wizman in “It’s All in the Timing” (page 40)
gives solid advice on this important matter.
Many of us are attached to our pets and think of them as nothing less than family members. For many of us, they replace children, and we spend huge amounts of
money on our four-legged friends. Chris Edling looks into the role that pets play
in our lives and why we value them so much in “Families’ Best Friends” (page 56).
Need time to get away from it all without taking a trip abroad? Cal-a-Vie may be

Miriam Wizman is a seasoned financial manager who consults with many celebrities
on financial matters. As the owner of Beverly Hills-based Miriam Wizman Insurance
& Financial Planning, she provides financial planning services to high-profile
individuals and business owners, focusing on meeting their individual financial
needs. In her column “Money Talk” (page 40), she addresses the very pertinent issue
of how to plan early so that you can retire in style.
Michael McCann is president of New York-based McCann Protective Services
(MPS), an executive protection agency that provides for the protective needs of
diplomats, celebrities and VIPs. Prior to founding MPS, McCann was chief of
security for the United Nations and a commanding officer for the NYPD. In this
issue (page 34), he tackles the question of how to keep your family safe both at
home and abroad in every situation.
Sandra J. Payne is a Hollywood screenwriter who was born in Alaska and has lived
in Asia and Europe. Her background has given her a lifelong fascination with social
customs and etiquette. She delivers her column “Mannerly Manor” (page 67) with
a witty and delightful humor. In this issue she advises those who are single but
looking to become attached how to step gingerly with their future in-laws.
Michael Holly is a celebrity butler who has worked for some of the most prominent
families in the United States and Europe. His many years of diligent service have
gained him recognition as one of the top butlers in the industry. In this issue (page
26), Holly recollects a fox hunt in which he accompanied one of his bosses in the
pure English tradition. Tally-ho!
Claudia Kahn, the owner of The Help Company, started one of the first nanny
agencies in the United States. As a single mother, she recognized a void in the
availability of high-quality child care. Since then, her agency has expanded to
include chefs, estate managers, butlers and personal assistants. Her clients include
a virtual who’s who of Hollywood. She has seen the household-staffing industry
evolve from the time she started and is amazed at the transformation, which she
discusses on page 24.
Justin Womack is a professional manny with over six years experience under his belt.
He loves working with children and has mentored, cared for and tutored boys and
girls of all ages. His charges look up to him as a role model, which allows him to
reach out to them and help them achieve their goals. On page 31 he approaches the
subject of chores and children, which is so important for developing responsibility
in children, no matter how young they are.
Carol Scudere is the owner of Professional Domestic Services & Institute in Ohio.
Along with her experienced staff, she has been teaching the “Art of Caring for
the Wealthy” for almost 20 years. Scudere has devoted her life to educating those
individuals with a true service heart. Her article on page 33 gives comprehensive
guidelines on how to shop for an employer efficiently.

Wow!!! I came across your magazine
(January/February issue) by chance and
happened to see the review you did on the

Not even in my wildest dreams had I ever
imagined that people of such high caliber

What is even more shocking is the type of
salaries they are earning. Why stay at a desk
job when you can have such an exciting career? I am spreading the word about this
and seriously thinking of entering this field.
I think that at 27 I am young enough to

with interest. I have been trying to resolve
a similar issue in my home, and my staff
has been resisting. They felt that uniforms

TOO EXTREME
Mandie Green’s piece in your January/
February issue on the extreme conditions
that push some personal assistants over the
edge was an eye-opener. I have just entered
the personal-assisting field, and I work for a
very nice boss. I simply can’t imagine getting
to the point where I would kill my employer.
I have heard “horror” stories from other assistants I have met, but they all chose to quit
when they realized that their employers were
not going to change their behaviors. I don’t
understand why any assistant would allow
things to get to that point. Why not quit if
it becomes unbearable? Obviously, some assistants stay in spite of the worst conditions.
Why they do is a mystery to me.

I own a household-staffing agency based in the
Midwest. Since a few of our clients are on the
West Coast, we fly to Los Angeles periodically to
interview candidates to add to our roster. I have
met some of these candidates myself. They look very professional
and have wonderful references, yet when we have asked them to
undergo drug testing as required by some of our clients, many of
them have tested positive for marijuana. We get very few candidates locally that test positive for drugs, even though I must admit
that many of our local clients do not require drug testing. I am
wondering if other agencies have had similar problems in regards
to candidates living on the West Coast.
A:
Drug use has become widespread and is a problem
that we as a society have to deal with at all levels.
We contacted agencies in other parts of the United
States, England, Australia, Germany and a few other
countries, and they are all seeing a surge in drug use among their
candidates. It is therefore not a West Coast problem alone but a
world issue. I would highly recommend all agencies make it mandatory for all candidates to be tested for drugs just before they are
placed on a job. It is the best way to protect your client and your
reputation as an agency.
Q:
In December of this year I landed an ideal position as a
houseman/chauffeur for a single socialite. On the second week of my employment my boss started a friendly
conversation with me, in the course of which I told her
about my two children who live in Poland with my mom and about my
plans to visit them in the New Year. To my utter dismay, she was very
angry and told me that she does not expect new employees to go on
vacation as soon as she hires them, and she fired me on the spot. What
she failed to understand was that I had made these plans before I got hired
and not after.Where did I go wrong?

The answer is simple: You got hired to do a job
and not to go on vacation. The general rule for
all new hires is that you are entitled to a vacation only after at least one year on the job, and
even that must be at the discretion of the employer because
you have to leave at a time that is convenient for him or her.
No wonder you got fired—you were completely in the wrong
to even mention the word “vacation” when you had just been
hired! For future purposes, take care of your vacation and other
personal affairs before you hit the job market.

Household help commands higher pay, more respect

A
t one time, domestic employment was considered the worst
type of job in America, akin to slavery. But that has changed.
Now a typical domestic can, and often does, have a good
education, a generous salary and respect around the home.
Starting in the late ‘80s, the concept of servants changed as the babyboomer generation entered adult- and parenthood.With the radical lifestyle (hippie) evolution of the ‘60s and the emphasis on equality, the
new-age woman found it hard to have an old-fashioned “servant” or
“maid” in her home. People so committed to equality found it uncomfortable to have someone call them “sir” or “ma’am.”
But now we have entered the 21st century. Butlers and nannies
are common, and no one is surprised to find a family with one or
two nannies, a butler to serve dinner or a chef to make dinner. These
families now enjoy staff for their private planes, yachts and second
and third homes. The hippie has disappeared, and people are trying
to emulate the European culture.
“Service” and “presentation” have become common needs
among families all over the United States—from New York to Los
Angeles, from Chicago to Detroit and all over the Midwest. Household staffing agencies are called upon daily for this type of service,
as compared to 10 years ago, when clients would request only one person to handle the needs of their
home. CEOs are buying multiple
properties and need estate managers
to run them like
five-star hotels.
Domestic training classes, schools and agencies have changed the
entire outlook of the domestic world. Domestics are no longer referred to as servants. In the 21st century, people want their housekeepers to wear uniforms again and serve them with silver trays.
The demands of the service required have not changed. What has
changed is that now the worker is respected more and paid a fair salary.
The government now requires domestics to be paid legally—especially
since September 11. Companies that specialize in paying household help,
have become large, successful businesses because of this change. People are
making estate manuals for their homes, and companies have emerged that
make these, as well.
The Help Company and other agencies like it are required to give
their clients not only new staff but contracts for employers and employees, confidentiality agreements and
other legal documents. We are also asked to consult at
the home to ascertain how much staff is needed. This
business has grown tenfold due to the huge increase
of multimillionaires over the last decade.

We do not know what the future holds, but we
hope that domestic workers’ quality of life continues
to increase and they continue to be recognized for
the valuable service that they provide. C

An English fox hunt becomes an unforgettable adventure

evon, England, 1987. I went there with my American employer, Major
Geoffrey Jones, who resided in New York. He was a great horseman
and loved to talk about his adventures.

Jones was always searching for ways to stretch the envelope
when it came to life pursuits. After brainstorming about how
to spend an upcoming vacation, he decided to visit a friend,
Terrence Churchill. On the agenda, besides small talk, would
be something special: an English fox hunt, or meet, as Europeans call it.
This hunt was particularly
gracious because rather than
having a live fox as quarry,
they used a “scent drag.”
The hunt is normally held twice a year, after the harvest.
What remains is a barren landscape ripe for trampling by
man and beast—the beasts being horses ridden by the participants and hounds that track the fox.
From New York, we flew to London, where our host’s
chauffeur, Bradley, met us at the airport. We drove to the
estate, which encompassed flowing fields and oak trees.
The hunt required preparation by the mansion’s service
staff, overseen by the household’s butler. Although I was
Jones’s butler in New York, I became his valet, which was
easier. Preparing the hunting outfit followed tradition: Jones
brought riding boots, a well-used red jacket and a pair of
beige britches, and I made sure they were clean, with the
buttons polished.
Of course, Jones, a tall, gray-haired ex-Army man who’d
served in World War II in Germany and France, wasn’t alone
in the hunt: there were 30 invited guests.
The event began that evening with a pre-hunt dinner. I
didn’t have anything to do with the food preparation, as I
was the valet. Although I ate downstairs with the staff, we
enjoyed the same dinner the guests were having upstairs—in
fact, we dined before them—and the dinner was brilliant.
The following morning, staff and guests congregated after
breakfast in the front courtyard of the estate, along with
the horses and dogs—the scene reminding me of a 19thcentury lithograph. An early arrival was Michael O’Sullivan,
renowned hunter and master of the North Kerry Harriers,
who had trekked from Ireland to be the master of this hunt.
Assisting him was George McGuire, charged with maintaining the hounds. I remember the sounds—the racket made by
the guests, the horses, the dogs, the horns.
Most of the hunt’s participants had grown up around
horses, lear ning to r ide as soon as they could walk and
later on schooled in the graces of the hunt. Men made

While the men rode their mounts in the common saddleup position, the women, mandated by histor ical decorum,
opted for the side-saddle approach—a practice dating to
an earlier per iod when it was considered unladylike for a
woman to straddle a horse.
This hunt was particularly gracious because rather than
having a live fox as quarry, they used a “scent drag.” Before
the hunt began, the master’s assistants went out to spread the
scent of a fox. This morning, the hunter’s goal was sport; the
participants had no intention of killing an animal to show
off as a trophy.
After hours of galloping, everyone retur ned to the estate. Humans and horses and hounds were tuckered out.
Faces and heads were muddied beyond recognition, and
it was clear that people needed time under neath a shower head or in a bathtub. No waiting in line to clean up,
though, as the mansion had plenty of bathrooms. Before
long, participants were sparkling clean, no worse for wear
except for aches and pains—and those were a major topic
at dinnertime.
At 9 p.m., we assembled in the dining room for dinner.
All had discarded their riding wear in favor of black suits
and bow ties—an amazing transformation of appearance and
mind. After a night of rest, we returned to London the following day, then two days later set out to New York to resume our lives.

Jones had shared an outdoor experience that I will always remember. Hats off to the eccentric and thoughtful adventurer
who had it all and wasn’t shy about sharing.

Traveling to a location for an event
is always a challenge. Organizing
flights, hotels and airport pickups while overseeing the
timely arrival of the entourage can be tricky.
No matter how many
weeks in advance
you prepare, the
toughest part is
handling situations
you didn’t plan.
My boss was presenting
and performing at an awards show
at a major venue. The full entourage would be there: agent, manager,
hair, make-up, wardrobe, plus several guests to boot. The group flew
in days before the event, separately and in order of their duties.
Rehearsals were underway, and, as a potpourri of stars were performing on stage in jeans and T-shirts, I felt as though I were peeking
into their living rooms during private moments. As harried as things
were becoming, I was managing to keep up with the usual calls,
while making sure that the entourage would arrive on schedule.
This was a big televised event with a live audience, which meant
miles of walking inside the enclosed arena. I hiked up to the production office to take care of details, then walked another mile to find
my boss, who was never in the same place for long. I quickly realized
that I had brought all the wrong shoes. Blisters were already forming,
and there would be no time to shop for a new pair.
Rule No. 4 in assisting: Never
let them see you sweat.
The last few prep days were 12 to 15 hours long, and the day of
the live show finally arrived. The venue was packed, and we were 20
minutes away from showtime. My boss’s manager and I settled in the
dressing room to watch the show on television. I was finally starting
to relax, when the manager asked, “Do you have the six backstage
passes for the guests for after the show?”

problem on my hands. I ran into the hallway, which only moments earlier had been packed with stars, and found it empty. Finally, I saw a production woman. I grabbed her and told her my dilemma. She quickly
responded, “Follow me.” We sprinted through the unending corridors
until we came upon a famous industry mogul complaining to another
production person that he, too, needed several backstage passes. The
production woman and I exchanged knowing glances and ran.
Out of breath, we found ourselves alone in the production office,
and we ran straight for a file cabinet. Inside a folder were the last of
the backstage passes—exactly six. In a burst of giddy laughter, we
grabbed them, knowing that we were taking them away from one
of the biggest producers in Hollywood. Unfortunately for him, his
people were not as fast as I was.
I distributed the passes to the seated guests and calmly made my
way back to the dressing room.The manager looked surprised at how
quickly I had returned and asked, “Did you get them?” I responded
with a careless shrug: “Yeah, it was no problem.”

hores and children. The connection doesn’t always “birth”
naturally. According to one recent study, nine out of 10
Southern California families do not follow a regular chore
schedule. In light of grades, extracurricular activities and sports,
chores might not seem a valuable investment of time. However, the
children who do make chores a childhood habit blossom into more
responsible, organized and disciplined professionals—a pattern I’ve
seen established consistently in my personal experience, as well as in
numerous childhood and adolescent studies. The key to getting on
track with chores is simple: LEAD.

Chores can seem a little daunting at first, so it’s important that we
keep our own living areas neat and that we keep that feat as simple
as possible. It’s been my experience that a general organic household
cleaner is a safer and more efficient tool than the array of traditional
cleaners available. With window cleaner, bathroom cleaner, toiletbowl cleaner and so on, the task of cleaning a small room can quickly
turn into a complicated sequence of actions. A multipurpose solvent
is more versatile and is great for quickly cleaning several different

urchasing for a household employer is one of those things that most
people think anyone can do. Buying with someone else’s money does sound
great, doesn’t it? However, having someone
else’s credit card tucked into your wallet
does not mean that you can buy whatever
you want, however you want, from wherever you want to buy it. Purchasing as a
household manager requires you to do so
according to someone else’s needs, tastes
and desires. And in the case of the household employer, those may be far different
from your own.
Here, then, are some principles of purchasing for you to consider.
• Know Your Employer
This may require you to do some detective work. It is not uncalled for to check
what your employer already has to see
what their tastes are like. Check their
closets, their drawers, their cabinets. This
is especially important in the kitchen

• Buy Brand Names Only

PIN numbers confidential. Opt out of unnecessary mailing lists; remove all personal information from company, family and social networking sites; and shred documents with identifying information.

yourself and your family from identity theft, visit the Federal Trade

in the heart of the Big Apple or in other rural or urban locations—
develop a personal escape plan in the event of an emergency. Draft
a plan for your family and ensure that everyone comprehends it and
keeps a copy with him or her.
During and immediately after a natural disaster or terrorist attack,
outbound communications could be severely restricted, so it is especially important to designate a meeting place outside your home
where you can congregate. An out-of-town friend or family member
is usually best. Make arrangements ahead of time so that every member of your family knows where to meet and how to get there.

a
“go
bag”
In the event of a major emergency, have ready a “go bag” that
includes essentials: an extra set of eyeglasses, house keys, a small
amount of cash, your emergency plan, Metrocard or other mass
transportation cards, a spare credit card, prescription medications,
whistle, a pair of comfortable shoes or sneakers, portable radio,
flashlight and a standard first-aid kit. The kit should also include a
three-day supply of food and water rations, including bottled water,
protein bars and dried food. And don’t forget to stash extra batteries
for your cell phone, radio and flashlight as well. Remember, if the
power fails, electric telephones and radios won’t work.

may last 20 years or more. So, if “time is
money,” how many years do you have in
the bank?
The sooner you start building your nest egg, the longer it has to
grow. Consider the following examples, which assume no taxes or
inflation. Suppose that, starting at age 25, you save $100 per month
for 20 years and earn 6-percent interest. If you make no additional
contributions after the age of 45, and your savings continue to earn
6-percent interest, at age 65 your savings will be $148,182. However, if you begin at age 45, save $100 per month for 20 years and earn
6-percent interest, at age 65 your savings will be only $46,204.
As these scenarios illustrate, an additional 20 years and the
compound-interest factor make all the difference in the world.
If you are in your prime earning years and start setting money
aside now, you have a better opportunity to save for the retirement you desire.
The first step in developing a savings strategy that best meets
your retirement needs is determining your objectives. How
do you envision your “golden years”? Allow yourself to dream
about what you want your future to look like. At what age do
you want to retire? Where do you see yourself living? Do you
enjoy travel? Would you like to continue to work at least part
time? These questions and others will help you shape a vision

Pets provide benefits of family without the drawbacks

Manufacturers Association estimates
that people spent over $40 billion a
year on their pets in 2007. That’s more
than we spend on candy and toys.

r. Albert Schweitzer, the Nobel Peace Prize
recipient and revered scholar of the human
condition, was once asked for an antidote to
the general misery of life. His response: “Music and cats.” The latter half of his prescription could reasonably be expanded to include creature companions of all shapes and sizes. Although this may seem a mere bon
mot to some, any animal owner will confirm Schweitzer’s pithy
remedy. Pets fill a unique and substantial void, and, like music,
they improve the quality of our lives.
In fact, they have been improving our lives for many thousands of years. The earliest evidence of animal domestication
dates back to dogs in 15,000 B.C. in eastern Asia, making canines our first known nonhuman companions. As civilization
developed structured agriculture, dogs were intentionally bred
to assist in labor. This was especially helpful when the domestication of goats, sheep, pigs and cows followed suit, as dogs were
employed to help herd and protect kept animals from predators
such as wolves, their own not-so-distant relatives.
Of course, the cast from Old MacDonald’s farm comprises
only a portion of the beasts we humans have drawn close to our
collective heart. Spiders, skunks, tortoises, tigers, snakes, alligators, raccoons, rare birds and countless other bestial buddies have
played the role of pet in homes across the globe. In the United
States, pot-bellied pigs are not uncommon pets in Texas and the
Southeast, and domesticated hedgehogs have enjoyed a surge in
popularity since the 1980s (though owning them is illegal in
numerous states, including California, Georgia and Hawaii).
Whether Labrador retriever or leatherback turtle, the motivation for keeping any pet depends largely on the wants and needs
of the owner. An older widower in search of companionship
probably gets more pleasure from a purring kitten in his lap
than the dragon stare of a terrarium-bound monitor lizard. For
seeing-impaired persons, the spectacle of Siamese fighting fish
would pale in comparison to the benefit of a golden retriever’s
watchful eyes and vigilant tug.
In a family setting, pets serve a role that is complementary
but separate from that of other members in the family. In the
same way Starbucks strives to be a “third place” for customers
away from home and work, one might say pets fulfill a similar
function: a domestic “third place.” Traditional families have
parents, children and perhaps extended family like grandparents
or aunts and uncles. These roles are fairly well defined along lines
of authority, freedom and duty. Pets, on the other hand, provide
a comfort zone of security where all the stressors from intimate
family ties—anger, annoyance, disapproval, punishment—simply
melt away. Just as Starbucks provides overstuffed chairs (and WiFi for T-Mobile subscribers) to give customers a pleasurable
refuge from home and work, pets bestow the rejuvenating perks
of playfulness, distraction and unconditional love that family
members crave but can’t always find elsewhere.
Given this preponderance of desirable traits, it is not surprising
that pets are typically considered full-fledged members of the
families they join. At dinnertime, dogs often sit a scrap’s throw
away from the table with their own bowl of chow. For Christmas, a paw-adorned stocking carrying the dog’s or cat’s name
often dangles alongside the socks of parents and kids. As entities
that provide the positive attributes of family members but lack
many of the attendant complications, it is little wonder that family pets are treasured so highly.
So highly, in fact, that the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association estimates that people spent over $40 billion a
year on their pets in 2007. That’s more than we spend on candy
and toys (which generate $20 billion and $25 billion annually)
and nearly double the amount we spent on pets a mere decade
ago. Emblematic of this extravagance is the growing popularity of luxury pet accoutrements, such as designer pet clothing,
pet therapy and high-end pet spas, which offer guests amenities
ranging from gourmet meals to exercise facilities and professional mani-pedis—complete with nail polish.
Also contributing to the increase in spending is an upswing
in the popularity of pets themselves. Twenty years ago, it is estimated that 56% of U.S. households owned pets; today, that figure is closer to 63%. That’s over 71 million homes enjoying the
known benefits of animal companionship, which studies show
to include lower blood pressure, reduced stress, decreased incidence of heart disease and staving off depression. Score one for
Dr. Schweitzer. C

he practice of “going green”—choosing options that
are good for the environment—is now mainstream.
Buzzwords like “eco-friendly,”“organic” and “hybrid,”
once relegated to hippie counterculture, have become
firmly entrenched in our vernacular and are embraced as lifestyle
choices that reflect sensitivity and awareness. In Greenopia:The Urban
Dweller’s Guide to Green Living, Collette Brooks writes, “Imagine a
world in which everyone lived green. This is no longer a utopian
aspiration. It’s a practical way in which urban dwellers can live
sustainably, today.” Living green in a city like Los Angeles may seem
like a oxymoron, but by making simple lifestyle adjustments, it is
incredibly possible.
We live in times in which claiming ignorance is no longer acceptable. Al Gore’s blockbuster documentary, An Inconvenient Truth,
marked a point of no return for green consciousness in America.
And he is not alone in his crusade. Celebrities like Cameron Diaz,
Bono and Leonardo DiCaprio, among others, are also using their
fame to champion the green cause, winning respect from their colleagues and the public.

In the past, “green” fashion implied hemp
skirts and granola gear. However, as Scott Hahn,

awakening of ecological sensitivity is driving
designers to deliver socially- and environmentally-gratifying products.” For example, take

the fringe culture but a viable lifestyle choice for

choices declare sensitivity to the health of our

excess, and that message is transmitted around
the world. But there is a way to have all these

along with others is, of course, etiquette. There are certain
basic behaviors that can either increase respect and affection for each other or, when such behaviors are lacking,
fuel the flames of discontent.
That old cliché, “You never get a second chance to make
a first impression,” is a cliché for a reason: it’s true. So,
when it’s time to meet the parents, there are a few steps
you should take as you begin what may become a lifelong
relationship with your prospective in-laws.
Helpful hint: Feel free to apply this advice to other relationships in your life, as well.

doorstep. Instead, it’s best to solicit your soul mate’s advice
on how to make a good first impression, and then listen
carefully to the response. Sometimes, people are unaware
of the, shall we say, “personality quirks” of their own relatives. Find out a few simple facts—religion and political
or ientation are excellent places to start—just so that you
can steer clear of potential conversational landmines.
2. C l e a n u p . It may seem r idiculous to mention this
step, but in these days and times, it’s best not to leave anything to chance when it comes to etiquette advice. When
you are judged within seconds of meeting someone, it
makes good sense that the first time you meet prospective
in-laws, a certain level of care is taken with your dress and
grooming. You may not want to greet them at the door
with bed-head and a dirty T-shirt. There’s a high probability that this image will be bur ned into their retinas for
decades to come.
5. F ollow up . Oh, yeah. Here it comes. The dreaded
advice to wr ite a thank-you note. It’s the same-old sameold, but it’s still good stuff. A quick note on a small card
telling people how much you enjoyed meeting them can
cement a great future relationship. Make it happen. You
won’t regret this extra level of politeness.
Once you’ve created a successful atmosphere for meeting those future in-laws, the last piece of advice is to relax,
be yourself and enjoy the exper ience. A certain amount of
awkwardness can be expected but will be eased quickly
with a genuine smile, good listening skills, great questions
and exemplary treatment of your soul mate.
Come to think of it, you don’t need such a momentous
occasion as meeting future relatives to flex your etiquette
muscles. Stay in practice by exercising these simple rules
year-round, and you’ll be ready to meet anyone any time
with aplomb. C
3. B e t h o u g h tf u l . These are the people who are
responsible for creating your beloved. A basket of flowers
or a bottle of wine may be just the thing to start off on the
r ight foot. Again, check with your soul mate for hints so

I don’t have kids, so I treat him like a baby—pushing him in
his stroller, taking him for a ride in the car, brushing his teeth
every night, reading bedtime stories, putting a sweater on him
when it’s cold, worrying about him when I go out of town. He
eats food from the vet, as well as a home delicacy: kangaroo
and rabbit.
Tater Tot brings joy, forcing me to lighten up. We celebrate
Easter, Christmas, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, etc.
I love to buy him stuff (he owns 150+ outfits). On the serious
side, we give back to the community. Three years ago, I got
Tater Tot certified as a licensed therapy dog. He’s a hit visiting
children in hospitals and seniors in nursing homes.

I had pets growing up: dogs, cats, even a pony. When I moved
out on my own, I wanted something to come home to that was

and checks grocery bags when I return from the market (to
see if I bought her favorite treats).
Sabrina helps alleviate stress. Sometimes when my boyfriend and
I get into a tiff, she distracts us with an affectionate headbutt.
Sabrina has an extraordinary human-like trait: an ability to
sense my mood, knowing when to stay clear and when I need
some love.
Conversely, she has a mean side. When my boyfriend and I
moved in together, he brought his cat, but Sabrina wouldn’t
allow it to sleep in the bed with us. Sabrina would also gather
her toys one by one and bring them onto the bed so that the
other cat couldn’t play with them.
Pet ownership is not for everyone. Hang around people who
have pets for awhile and see how you react. Sometimes it takes
time to warm to animals, and for them to warm to you. C

Cancer Research. Commanding the stage in a succession of spectacular gowns, she wowed
the audience. She has raised millions of dollars for
numerous charities during her 40-year career, and
breast cancer is one of her dearest causes. Farrah
Fawcett, who is currently battling cancer herself,
was unable to appear. However, her Charlie’s Angels
co-star Kate Jackson a cancer-survivor herself, was
on hand to accept the Spirit of Entertainment Award
in Farrah’s honor. The plucky performer made an
impassioned speech about Farrah’s determination to
fight the dreaded disease.
Carrie Ann Inaba, who will soon be seen
along with her Dancing with the Stars cojudge Bruno Tonioli in the new ABC reality

Doris Roberts, the four-time Emmy-winning star of Everybody
Loves Raymond (the show for which Willard was nominated for

event is used to continue the programs of this

Day to Remember for the Operaphiles
The official opening of the social scene in Los Angeles is the Opera’s
Weekend Gala, which brings out opulent operaphiles from our arts
and entertainment community. The opening-night performance
was Beethoven’s Fidelio (the only opera the master ever wrote). L.A.
attendees included billionaire philanthropists Eli and Edye Broad, Sid
and Mercedes Bass, Michael and Jane Eisner, playwright David
Mamet, and Elizabeth and Dennis Tito (fresh from his high-flying
trek to the International Space Station). The performance by soprano
Anja Kampe as Lenore was out of this world! The audience was

The three-dimensional animated special effects by Sergio Metalli,

season as associate conductor and chorus master.
But the best musical note was issued by Placido Domingo, who
announced that over $1.5 million was raised to secure the position of the
Los Angeles Opera Company as one of the finest in the world.

rotating throughout the house, for instance, is

sure to start with a clean room in perfect order. Explain to the child that it is his or her
mission to keep that particular room in order
for a week. Go easy, because this is a pretty
big assignment, but eventually things will begin to flow naturally.

Once children have been taught properly,
patiently and thoroughly, they will continue
“doing”—doing their own chores, doing
their own homework, doing their own …
You get the point. Chores lay a foundation
for the initiative and responsibility children
need as they grow into independent adults.
Taking out the trash on Wednesdays might
not seem essential initially, but taking out
that big pile of trash consistently will grow
into the greater habit of self-responsibility.

When a local partner, like Goodwill, refers a woman in need, DFS outfits the

for that all-important first interview.
Holly Ammon, a single mother of two
boys, was laid off and stuck in a vicious
cycle until Goodwill set up a job interview and put her in touch with DFS.
“A door just opened, and light came
through,” she says. “I was greeted by a

All clients are also invited to join Professional Women’s Group, the DFS mentoring program. Ammon attends meetings
regularly. “The lectures help you budget
your money and time,” she says. Her sons
have reaped the benefits; their mother is
the role model she always wanted to be.
Now, Ammon has big goals.“I would love
to become a DFS volunteer. And I want
to be a supervisor at Downstate Medical
Center.” Ammon gained more than confidence the day she put on that suit and
rejoined the professional arena: she gained
a new outlook and a world of new opportunities. “I would tell any woman to make
