The economy is struggling to recover, jobs are scarce, resources are limited and families are running out of options. The prolonged, negative impact of the economic recession has sadly placed a tremendous burden on our children and families. More families are living with too few resources, struggling to meet even the basic necessities such as food or reliable housing. These are not just facts, but real stories of our neighbors experiencing the hopelessness that results from such severe economic stressors. Fortunately for our families, Robins’ Nest continues to be a stabilizing force in an otherwise tumultuous world. By helping to empower parents and keep children safe, Robins’ Nest provides families with the necessary skills they need to work through these trying times and come out stronger and better able to face life’s challenges. Robins’ Nest is also there to help ease conflict between children and parents, teach a first-time mother how to support and enrich her child’s life, or support a family suffering the loss of a loved one. Through our over 40 programs we strengthen and empower families, give them hope and help them heal. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of our donors and volunteers who share our mission and values. Together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our children and strengthen their families. Sincerely yours, Anthony DiFabio, Psy.D. Kathie Renner, Esq. Chief Executive Officer Board President Highlights From 2011 Strengthening Families is not only a core part of Robins’ Nest’s mission and services, but also an important value shared by our board, staff, volunteers and supporters. It is why Robins’ Nest, in the face of increasingly more complex and nuanced challenges in the child welfare and mental health systems, must “do whatever it takes...” to strengthen our agency as well as our families and bring hope and healing to the thousands of people we serve every year. For Robins’ Nest to overcome these challenges and remain a leader in our sector, we must continue to provide premier programs using the most highly-qualified and trained staff, and support an organizational structure based on sound fundamental business practices. To be a great steward of the communities trust means providing nothing but our very best. 2011 Programs and Services Therapeutic Visitation Services help maintain a critical and supportive bond between children and parents during an out-of-home placement when it is expected that the family will be reunified within 3-6 months. These services involve a therapist for managing the reunification plan and a site-visit coordinator. Robins’ Nest added two visit coordinators and one therapist for Camden and Cape May Counties serving an additional 30 families. Healthy Families is an evidence-based, nationally-recognized home visitation program which is designed to improve the health and welfare of pregnant women, parents/families, and their infants and young children. Moving forward in 2012, Robins’ Nest will act as a central intake for Healthy Families, Nurse Family Partnership and FamCare for Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem Counties. The Child and Adolescent Wellness Center of Danellie Counseling provides counseling services for anxiety, stress, depression, bullying, socialization, and school adjustment to children and adolescents in two local school systems. Robins’ Nest currently offers these services in the Woodbury and Salem districts. Operations and Workforce Development Robins’ Nest consistently receives high grades for customer satisfaction for both staff professionalism and service quality. In order to maintain the highest quality services, Robins’ Nest solicited and received a Workforce Development Grant to enhance and develop staff skill sets. Robins’ Nest is proud of its ongoing investment in its greatest resource–its staff. Being the best service provider is simply not enough in today’s complex world of Compliance and Health Insurance Privacy. In order to assure our ability to provide the highest quality of services, Robins’ Nest has implemented a rigorous compliance program which includes agency-wide trainings, robust compliance policies and procedures, and the installation of a new Chief Compliance Officer. Development Expansion In 2011 Robins’ Nest initiated a board-approved, three-year development plan designed to attract more donors, increase and enhance communications, and set the platform for long-term philanthropic growth for the agency. One of our initiatives for 2011 was to revamp the Volunteer Center by making it easier to find out about volunteer opportunities, and to apply to become a volunteer. This new online process has proven very successful in attracting and retaining new volunteers. Robins’ Nest also launched a new electronic communications strategy that includes an educational series of “Did You Know” e-mails, our first ever Digital Newsletter “Taking Flight,” and an ongoing fundraising/awareness campaign through online solicitations. “The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family.” ~ Lee Iacocca Our Programs & Services Touching Lives through Support, Healing and Empowerment Group Home and Residential Living One of life’s greatest fundamental needs is a place to call home. The Robins’ Nest Group Home provides a family-type setting that blends therapy with a nurturing structure to help at-risk children develop a sense of belonging and self esteem. Our Life Link Homes program provides both life skills and safe, affordable apartments for youth who are homeless or are leaving the child welfare system. “When I was 18, my dad kicked me out of the house and I couldn’t stay with my mom either. My case worker helped me find Life Link Homes. If it wasn’t for Life Link Homes, I would be in a homeless shelter.” In 2011 a total of 2,146 children and their families received in-home and on-site counseling services to help improve their emotional well-being. Counseling In 2011 57 children benefitted from the therapeutic environment and stability of the Group Home and Life Link Residences. Support is vital for families experiencing economic hardship, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and other serious problems. Through In-Home Counseling and Support Services, family members are given the tools and encouragement to improve their communication, interaction, and overall functioning. Danellie Counseling Center provides individual, group, family and marital therapy as well as specialized programs through the Child and Adolescent Wellness Center for children who are victims of sexual abuse or suffer from eating disorders or suicidal ideation. “After my husband lost his job, our family always seemed to be fighting and yelling. The stress was taking over and we were falling apart. Functional Family Therapy helped us deal with the stress, and start talking to one another without letting things get out of control.” Child Permanency Robins’ Nest has developed a network of successful programs designed to create stability for children in temporary situations. Child Permanency Planning not only enables children in foster care to maintain a bond with their biological families, it supports family reunification by building parental skills through education. Adoptive, Foster and Kinship Family Services offers therapy for adopted children, counseling for foster parents and support for children placed with relatives. “As foster parents, we realized that our foster children were In 2011 746 children maintained a relationship with their biological families and enjoyed support and stability. having trouble adjusting in our home. The Strengthening Foster Children and Families program helped the children to cope with the losses and changes they were experiencing and taught us techniques to help them bond and adjust to our family.” Prevention and Parent Education Parenting plays a pivotal role in children’s social, emotional, health and intellectual development. Research has shown that parent education can greatly improve outcomes for children. The Prevention and Parent Education programs of Robins’ Nest provide the necessary skills and fundamental resources that new at-risk parents need to raise healthy babies and become self-sufficient. “When we found out we were having a baby we were so scared. Then my Healthy Families worker came to visit for the first time, and I knew it was a blessing to have her in our lives. She taught us so much about caring for our baby and that we are our baby’s first teacher. I’m so grateful.” In 2011 Robins’ Nest guided 1,219 parents and children towards healthy child development. Programs for Young Adults Many young people aging out of foster care have secured housing but still need support to negotiate the transition to adulthood. Robins’ Nest offers these young people life-skills training, mentoring, crisis intervention, juvenile justice counseling and guidance, all aimed at promoting self-sufficiency and independence. “The On My Own program helped me to get ready to move out of my foster home when I turned 18. They taught me the skills In 2011 237 young adults were assisted with the transition into adulthood. I needed to live independently.” Crisis Response Families and children in crisis require specialized support. Robins’ Nest offers programs designed to stabilize critical situations before they escalate and result in an out-of-home placement. These programs provide support and encouragement and promote a better sense of permanency and safety for the child and family. “My daughter was threatening suicide. If it wasn’t for the immediate action of Children’s Mobile Response at Robins’ Nest, I don’t know what would have happened. They helped to calm her down and then got all of us the help and guidance we needed.” OUR GREATEST REWARD: SATISFYING THOSE WE SERVE 2011 Customer Satisfaction Survey 95% of clients were very satisfied or satisfied with Robins’ Nest staff. 97% of clients were very satisfied or satisfied with Robins’ Nest services. 2011 Professional Referral Satisfaction 100% of professionals who referred cases to Robins’ Nest and responded to a satisfaction survey were very satisfied or satisfied with Robins’ Nest staff. 100% of professionals who referred cases to Robins’ Nest and responded to a satisfaction survey were very satisfied or satisfied with Robins’ Nest services. They share their wealth of knowledge and talents asking nothing in return, except the opportunity to further our mission. Whether they are serving on our Board of Directors; mentoring a child or young adult; assisting staff with administrative duties; or hosting an activity for our families, they impact the lives of our children and families. These individuals and groups believe in our work and are committed to raising awareness in the community, supporting our events and making a difference in the lives of thousands of children in South Jersey. Their contributions are essential in helping us to provide our families with opportunities for growth, experiences to enjoy together and a sense of empowerment. We gratefully acknowledge the volunteers listed for their invaluable support of our agency and mission. Their extraordinary gift of time, talents and resources play a major role in our accomplishments and we are appreciative for all that they give to us. Sincerely, Elizabeth Carr Volunteer Coordinator “I am grateful for having found Robins’ Nest.
