Monsignor’s Message
REJOICE IN THE LORD &
RESOLVE YOUR ANGER
BY RECONCILING
We all feel and express anger. Even God expresses his anger as wrath. Wrath is the
hurt we cause ourselves or others when we do not obey the Way, the Truth and the Life
of Jesus. Anger as a human gift can be healthy or hurtful. As a child I thought that
Mom was mean by holding me and then spanking me. Now, I realize she was caressing
me with one hand and correcting me with the other. Jesus tells us in the Parable of the
Lost Sons that by listening and learning to the Son of God, we will learn how mercy
and compassion can resolve our anger and reconcile with those who anger us.
The prodigal son sins by wishing his Dad dead and wastes his time, talents and
resources. The loyal son sins by thinking that by working he can earn his father’s
inheritance. As the elder son, the Jewish custom dictated that elder son received the
entire inheritance. It was up to elder son to share and care for the rest of the family
members. The elder son sins by refusing to reconcile with his brother. He becomes
jealous, resentful and mad. As both divine and human, Jesus is the perfect Son, we must
imitate. Our Savior reveals that as disciples, we must correct by caressing rather than
condemning. We are all sinners, but we rejoice always because our heavenly Father can
heal our anger when we practice compassion for sinners.
Saint Paul professes that “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.” As ambassadors
of Christ we must become ministers of reconciliation. Father Alex taught us that the
best way to overcome anger is through forgiveness. On the cross, Jesus offered Paradise
to the repentant thief and to all of us: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what
they are doing.” Joshua recalls that God removed shame and saved our Jewish brethren
through the Passover Meal. At Mass, Our Loving Father nourishes us with his very
Body and Blood so that we can reconcile and rejoice now and in heaven forever.
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, allow the face of Jesus shine through you by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Then pray to forgive others face to face so
that you can restore your love for them. Find courage by meditating on the parables
of mercy found in St. Luke’s Gospel. Perform one or more works of mercy each day.
Go on a pilgrimage and walk through one of the Holy Doors. Tell others about God’s
mercy n your actions and your words. Spend some time in adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament in order to both receive the Lord’s mercy for yourself and to intercede for
His mercy for others. Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily, imploring mercy for a
particular intention and for the whole world.
“Look on every suffering and joy as sent directly by Him, and your life
will be an uninterrupted Communion…You see how you can glorify
Him in those states of suffering and exhaustion so hard to bear…”
—Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity

SMM LENTEN SERIES
7 Deadly Sins, 7 Lively Virtues
In this year of Mercy—transformation
is possible. Our Lenten Lecture Series will
consider the deadly sins the Devil uses
to attack us and God’s Plan of Mercy to
redeem us. Each night we will focus on a
capital sin and the virtue that combats it.
3/7: Sloth, Fr. Matt Guckin
3/14: Greed, Mrs. Rebecca Pine
3/21: Gluttony & Lust, Mr. Bill Donaghy
Join us for this special Lenten Series at
7 PM on Mondays in the St. Francis
Room. Come with your questions and be
renewed and transformed this Lent.
On what occasions have you balked at religious
changes? In what context are you willing
“to eat with sinners?”
TODAY’S GOSPEL
Read: Luke 13:1-9
They complained, saying, “This man welcomes sinners
and eats with them.”
Out with the old, and in with the new! It’s one thing to say that
about technological advancements or the latest fashions. It’s
another to suggest it’s time to change our religious habits or
principles. Yet this is what Jesus does, and it makes the Pharisees and scribes around him very uncomfortable. At the same
time, tax collectors and other sinners are quite delighted. Guess
who’s celebrating Laetare Sunday in this gospel?
The sinners are wearing pink today. So is the prodigal son.
Meanwhile, religious leaders are in no mood to rejoice. They
don’t see these changes Jesus is practicing and proclaiming
as hopeful at all. Eating with sinners? Showing mercy and welcome to wrongdoers? Why, it’s like – the righteous elder son sitting down to a meal with his profligate brother, freshly returned
from the pig sties! It’s not going to happen. Such extravagant
forgiveness is not on the menu. But if Jesus puts it there, how
can we refuse such a meal?

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
Dear Rev. Msgr. Ralph Chieffo,
“God has come down. He comes towards us. He invites us:
‘come and see how much I love you. Come and see that I am
here.’ Let us go there!...” (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) Christ
once came among us as a babe in His mother’s arms. Today
He dwells among us in the person of the poor!
As Little Sisters of the Poor, daughters of St. Jeanne Jugan, we
open our hearts and our homes to the neediest elderly in our
midst. This Christmas we thank you for opening your heart
to the needs of the elderly – with the generous support of your
gift of $1,000.
St Jeanne Jugan’s charismatic heart viewed all peoples as God’s
children, thus all members of one human family. We assure
you of a grateful remembrance in our daily prayers and in
the monthly Masses offered for our friends and benefactors
throughout this coming year. May God bless you and those you
love this Christmas and each day of the New Year.
Gratefully in the Heart of Christ,
Sr. Veronica Susan, 1sp

LEARNING ABOUT MRS. MENOLD
by Giuliana Andrews, 4th grader
On January 14, I interviewed
Mrs. Menold, the 3rd grade
teacher at St. Mary Magdalen School. Did you know
that Mrs. Menold came to
SMM in 2001? Mrs. Menold’s favorite subject to
teach is reading. If Mrs.
Menold was not a teacher,
she would run a cafe. Cool,
right? She wanted to teach
3rd grade because the kids
enjoy learning and they are
excited to see their teacher. I asked Mrs. Menold why she wanted to
come to SMM. “I felt that God was in this school” Mrs. Menold said.
She loves to pray with her 3rd graders. Her room is decorated with
lots of colors. I enjoyed interviewing Mrs. Menold.
LAUGH WITH THE PASTOR
“One of our first graders asked his Mom where we come from. She answered: “God created us from dust and we will become dust, when we
go back to God.” The boy was confused and responded: “Then, there
is someone under my bed. I do not know whether he is coming or
going to God.”
IHN DONATIONS
During this season of Lent, the network could use your donations as
we attempt to keep the doors open for homeless families in Delaware County. Donate thru the website dcihn.org or your check can
be mailed to: Delco IHN, P. O. Box 2384, Aston, PA 19014. THANK
YOU! We are always looking for more volunteers interested in getting even more involved with the network.
