Restoring Hope - Rebuilding Lives
Hello everyone,
April, Child Abuse Prevention Month, is several months
behind us and we are beginning to settle into a new school
year. The Children’s Assessment Center would like to thank
all of our staff, partners and volunteers who assisted us in
providing a record breaking number of prevention trainings
to churches, schools, camps and other youth-serving organizations during the last several months. The work of protecting
children is the responsibility of the adults. Therefore, educating
yourself on the signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse is imperative
for a safe and healthy community, free from abuse.
The face of child sexual abuse continues to change -- today in Houston, 1 in 5
children is solicited for sex while online; and on our streets, numerous young children
are lured into domestic human trafficking after running away from an abusive family
situation. Sadly, only 1 in 10 of these children will have the courage to talk about
their abuse.
The Children’s Assessment Center is here to put
the pieces back together after the unimaginable
happens and we need your help! Please contact
us to learn more about our Capital Campaign, sign
up for a volunteer training or just call to learn more
about the incredible work we do every day on
behalf of these brave and innocent children.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Spring
The 15th Annual Spirit of Spring Luncheon
and Fashion Show benefiting The
Children’s Assessment Center was held
on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Westin
Galleria. This year’s Spirit of Spring
marked a very special occasion as The
CAC celebrated 15 years of Houston
pledging support for child victims of
sexual abuse. It was a full house with over
500 supporters in attendance helping
to raise funds for programs that are
critical to the healing of child victims
of sexual abuse.
Outstanding event chairs Tina Davis,
Lidiya Gold, Denise Hazen and Yvette
Webb planned a delightful afternoon
with the perfect mix of fabulous spring
and summer (continued on page 4)

The Children’s Assessment Center’s mission is to provide a professional, compassionate and coordinated approach to the
treatment of sexually abused children and their families and to serve as an advocate for all children in our community.

The Restoring Hope Rebuilding Lives Capital Campaign is in its final phase of
fundraising! We have $5.5 million left to raise to complete our fundraising goal!
In case you haven’t heard, we are expanding our building to better prevent and
treat child sexual abuse in Harris County. The CAC will soon tear down our current
parking garage to make way for our new expanded facility! If you have not
donated to our capital campaign, we need your participation and financial support.
Your gift in any size will go a long way to make a very real and tangible difference in
the fight against child sexual abuse right here in our community. The sexual exploitation
of our children is a community-wide problem and we need the citizens of Harris
County to stand up and help us fight this increasingly dangerous epidemic. If you
are tired of hearing about human trafficking, child pornography and the online
solicitation of our children, please take a stance and donate to our capital
campaign! If everyone reading this newsletter makes a contribution, our
mission to better prevent and treat child sexual abuse will become a reality.
This is a very exciting time for The Children's Assessment Center and for
Houston! Please join us to help heal and protect our children! To follow
our construction progress or to find out more, go to www.cachouston.org.

fashions coupled with a focus on
the serious issue of child abuse and
how we as a community can better
protect our children. Senator Joan
Huffman was recognized as the luncheon’s honoree for her continued efforts
championing numerous bills strengthening the criminal justice system and protecting
children from human trafficking, sexual assault and abuse. The fashions for this
year’s show were provided by Tootsies and Cheeky Vintage and included a beautiful
runway of the latest spring and summer trends and exquisite vintage finds!
The guest speaker for the event was Alicia Kozakiewicz, a remarkable young
woman who was the victim of internet luring and was abducted to another state
where she was held captive. Following a miraculous rescue by the FBI and the
Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), Alicia came to realize that
other children need not suffer her traumatic experience and so the “Alicia Project,”
focusing on internet safety and awareness education was born. Ms. Kozakiewicz
drew the audience’s attention to the very real issue of online predators and the need
to be diligent with internet safety programs in order to keep our children safe.
A moving tribute to the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Task
Force (ICAC) brought the luncheon guests to their feet as the crowd expressed
gratitude for the team’s diligent work in keeping children safe from internet
predators. For the 15th Anniversary celebration, The CAC also recognized all of
the past Spirit of Spring event chairs for their support through the years.
This year’s underwriter was CenterPoint Energy and major sponsors included:
Air Liquide, Jana and Richard Fant, Frost Bank, H-E-B and Momentum Jaguar and
Land Rover Southwest Houston.

On April 1, 2014, The Children’s Assessment Center’s Executive Director Elaine Stolte
joined by Harris County District Attorney, Devon Anderson; Harris County Attorney,
Vince Ryan; and Harris County Child Abuse Task Force Vice President, Shephali Perkins
held a press conference to recognize April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and to bring
much needed attention to the issues of child abuse intervention and prevention.
During the press conference, The Children’s Assessment Center launched the Stand
Up, Step Forward Campaign intended to inspire victims to find the courage to disclose
their abuse and adults to find the courage to take action and report it. Crime Stoppers of
Houston, Inc. highlighted several fugitive sex offenders in Harris County and the Harris

County Child Abuse Task Force launched their annual child abuse prevention taxi cab
billboard awareness campaign. The Children’s Assessment Center not only drew attention to this issue by promoting the
Stand Up, Step Forward campaign, but also
conducted a number of activities and trainings
to raise awareness and education surrounding
the subject of child abuse. “During the month
of April, the issue of child abuse is at the
forefront of national discussions and we hope
our fellow citizens will pay attention as much
needed light is shed on this issue,” said CAC
Executive Director, Elaine Stolte.

This year marked the 18th Annual Houston Oilman’s Invitational Shooting Tournament (H.O.I.S.T.) and 480 participants joined for
another incredible event! The CAC was honored to be included as a beneficiary of the tournament again this year and grateful for the
longtime partnership and support from the H.O.I.S.T. organization. This year’s tournament was held at the Westside Sporting Grounds in Katy,
Texas on May 16th and 17th. The course opened on Friday for practice and the main event took place on Saturday. On Saturday evening,
H.O.I.S.T. presented a check to The CAC for $75,000, bringing the H.O.I.S.T. contributions to The Children’s Assessment Center to
$945,000! The CAC is incredibly thankful for the generosity and support of an organization that truly cares about improving the
lives of sexually abused children in our community, as well as helping to reduce the number of children who are victims.
Special thanks to Lauren and Joe Byars and all the H.O.I.S.T. Committee, Board of Directors
and Sponsors for including The CAC in another hugely successful event!

David Hughes, CAC Volunteer,
receives The CAC’s 1000 Hours
Community Service Award.
The Rainbow Room is a room
full of donated items given to
children who are either in need of
something specific or who are being
removed from a dangerous situation and
are being moved to a safe placement.
Infant and Children’s Clothing
Children’s Underwear (new)

Infant and Children’s Socks
As the first recipient of The CAC’s 1000 Hours Community Service Award,
David Hughes has been more than a loyal volunteer. His commitment to engaging
and encouraging the children who walk through the doors of The CAC playroom
is inspiring. He previously worked as a school counselor and teacher, but was
forced to retire due to his progressive blindness. Despite being declared legally
blind, he is driven by the desire to serve the youth in his community. He rides the
Houston METROlift twice a week to be in the playroom ready to receive the
children who look forward to seeing “Mr. David” every week. A playroom visit is
an opportunity for children at The CAC to not only have a safe place to just be a
child, but to also see good examples of what an adult-to-child relationship should
look like. Without volunteers like David Hughes, this would not be possible.
