INTRODUCTION Dear Sirs and Madams, Dear Participants of The World Games 2017 Wrocław! It is my great pleasure to introduce to you the second issue of “The World Games 2017 Bulletin”. Following the good practice from the first edition, Wrocław Organizing Committee will present the current status of the preparations to the Games and forthcoming tasks and processes. Please, let me remind the news from the end of the year of 2014 about new of dates for The World Games 2017. The 10th edition of this event will take place from 20 – 30 July 2017. These new dates would prevent a scheduling conflict with other major events and underlined the evident advantage of getting better media coverage when staging The World Games 2017 at the end of July. After intense discussion and consultation with IWGA’s media and marketing partners, the new date for the event was jointly chosen by WOC and IWGA. I am proud to inform you that the last six months were a busy and fruitful period for the WOC. First of all, the Municipality of Wrocław was established a wider cooperation with national and regional government on the 10th edition of The World Games, by signing the appropriate Agreements with Ministry of Sport and Tourism and with the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Another fundamental agreement was signed with the Polish Olympic Committee. The aim of all listed agreements is to combine organizational success with the long term value provided by creation of the optimal conditions for the popularization and development of physical activity among citizens. Another important achievement, especially for the IWGA Member Federations, is a presentation of the Daily Sports Schedule, which was announced officially by IWGA in the end of November 2014 during the 1st Competition Managers Meeting in Wrocław. In this very place, I would like to express my gratitude to all International Federations which sent their Competition Managers to the CMM. I am sure that both Wrocław Organizing Committee and member Federations gained a lot from this meeting, putting us all two steps ahead in our partnership. Finally last, but not least, it is my pleasure to congratulate Birmingham (Alabama, USA) local authorities and the bidding Team for winning the right to host The World Games in 2021! I wish all of you the very best in the year 2015. Let it be challenging, exciting and obviously very sporty! On behalf of Wroclaw Organizing Committee - Piotr Przygoński, President 1 2. They will be available on all venues during the competition days free of charge. 8 f. Volunteer Services The beginning of the volunteer service in Wrocław dates back to 1997, and is strongly associated with two events that arouse extreme emotions. The first one was the flood in July 1997, , which brought great damage to the entire city, while the second one was the 46th World Eucharistic Congress. It was the Eucharistic Congress that laid the groundwork for voluntary service in our city. Between May and June 1997, over 1300 volunteers were involved in the organizational activities. Moreover, in May 2003, volunteers assisted the Weimar Triangle Summit, which was hosted in Wrocław at that time. The growing interest in this type of volunteering, as well as the possibility of participation in numerous spectacular events, enabled the launch of the Volunteers for Wrocław project. As a rapidly developing city of many cultures, with a strong academic environment and dozens of people different age involved, the capital of Lower Silesia managed to create an institutionalized structure. Starting from 2005, Wrocław’s voluntary service is growing rapidly. For the last nine years the assistance of volunteers has been proven invaluable during big events such as the already mentioned European Summit of Regions and Cities in 2005, Futurallia (2006), Beijing 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Men’s Handball, the Visit of Dalai Lama XIV, EuroBasket (2009), Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships (2010), Wrocław Global Forum (2010-2014), Host Cities’ Volunteers for UEFA EURO 2012™, Polish Masters Football Tournament (2012), the III Polish Oncology Congress (2012), the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Academia Europaea (2013), the Innovation Festival 2013 and the Central and Eastern Europe Christians Meeting (2014). Each event attracted dozens of volunteers who, together with the organizers of the projects, contributed to the full success of those events. What’s more, in 2016, when Wrocław will be the European Capital of Culture, it is planned to involve the astonishing number of 3500 volunteers, who will be a significant part of the entire project. Wealth of experience in the organization of 9 volunteer services in Wroclaw guarantees the highest quality of this important operational aspect during TWG 2017. The concept of Volunteer Services during the Games will be known until the end of 4th quarter of 2015. g. First Aid and Medical Emergency 14 hospitals, 74 specialized medical clinics and emergency service provide medical care in Wrocław every day. During The World Games 2017 in Wrocław, medical service will be secure in all venues of competition and to all participants and spectators. The specific concept of The World Games 2017 medical care service will be prepared in the second quarter of 2015 and will include: dedicated hospitals (participants, VIP), medical care in venues for spectators, medical services on venues for athletes (in accordance with the sports regulations). Insurance for Competitors At the latest by 31 December 2016, the Host City shall publish any medical and public liability insurance requirements for competitors and their equipment, as well as conditions and prices for additional insurance coverage available for purchase on arrival in the Host City. Medical concept in detail will be known until the end of 2nd quarter of 2015. Please look at Appendix nr 4 to see where the hospitals are located in Wrocław. h. VISAS Since December 21, 2007, Poland is part of the Schengen Area, a zone without controls on internal borders which comprises of 28 countries. Third-country nationals may enter Poland if they are in possession of a valid travel document and a visa (if required). Council Regulation includes the lists of third countries whose nationals must possess valid visas to cross external borders, and of countries whose nationals are exempt from this obligation. List of countries whose nationals may enter Poland without a visa (as of January 2015): http://www.msz.gov.pl/en/travel_to_poland/entering_poland/visa_free/visa_free_countries Moreover, in 2015, WOC plans to include a new bookmark on the website: www.theworldgames2017.com where information on ways of getting visas and cooperation with WOC is going to be continually updated. Games Services Department plans to elaborate Transportation Concept (until the end of 4rd quarter of 2015) and Catering Concept (until the end of 1st quarter of 2016). 10 4. TRANSPORTATION VENUES - REVIEWS a. Wrocław Main Railway Station Wrocław’s main railway station has never looked better. Completed in 1857, this grandiose Neo-Gothic building, with its decadent exterior of turrets and crenellations, has been given a fresh blaze of bright orange-yellow paint – and while not necessarily the colour we would have chosen, it certainly makes an impression. During 2010-2012, due to UEFA EURO 2012™ Tournament, general renovation and reconstruction works were carried out making the Main Railway Station in Wroclaw the most representative building of this kind in Poland. Looking like a grandiose palace from its early days, the station finally has the surrounding grounds to match, with a green public square replete with dozens of benches and two fountains that replaced a car park and a gas station that formerly stood in front of the entrance. Additionally there’s a covered bicycle parking and a new underground parking complex nearby. As for getting into city, you are basically in it! The Market Square (Rynek) is within 15 minutes of walking. There is also a transport interchange next to the station (trams and buses stops). Getting to Rynek takes 5 minutes by tram. 11 b. Wrocław Airport On the 13th of December, Wrocław Airport was celebrating a special milestone. For the first time in its history Wrocław Airport welcomed the 2-million-passenger served within one year! The Wrocław Airport is situated in south-west part of Wrocław, about 10 km away from the city centre, near Wrocław motorway bypass, which makes the airport easily accessible for passengers driving from Warsaw along the S8 road, from Poznań, along the national road no. 5, as well as for those driving to the airport from the south, using the national road no. 8, and for the passengers driving along the A4 motorway. Since 2003 the airport has recorded a rapid increase in passenger traffic. Within 5 years, the number of passengers increased five times. The airport provides its services to network carriers which offer flights to the major hubs in Europe, low-cost carriers, like Ryanair and Wizz Air, which have their operational bases at the Wrocław Airport, and also charter airlines hired by tour operators as a part of a package deal, which includes accommodation, rentals, and other activities for an entire holiday. On 11th of March 2012 a new passenger terminal was opened. Its capacity is almost 4 million passengers a year and in the future it will reach as much as 7 million. This will be the main hub for Wrocław. 12 5. MEDIA AFFAIRS a. Media Centre To provide most suitable space and conditions for the journalists and other media representatives, we are analyzing two sites for the Main Media Center – Wrocław City Stadium and the National Forum of Music. Besides the Main Media Center, Organizing Committee is planning to arrange the sub media centers on a number of the sports’ venues. These draft conceptions’ aim is to make the media communication fast and efficient. Wrocław City Stadium already served as the Host Broadcaster and Media Center during the UEFA Euro 2012 European Football Championship. The Stadium is well prepared both from the technical point of view and the availability of the space required for media. National Forum of Music, although never used for this purpose (as it is still under construction), has many advantages too – located in the very heart of the city, with modern technical infrastructure and much space to take the advantage of, just next to the preliminarily planned World Games Plaza (fan zone). WOC plans to present the final site of Media Centre in the next edition of bulletin. Moreover there will be media facilities at facilities at each venue or in the reach of respective venue to ensure high-standard coverage. 13 b. Host Broadcaster and TV Production The public procurement procedure for choosing the Host Broadcaster is in progress. We are willing to select reliable, capable and qualitative Broadcaster for the Games in Wrocław and to deliver high standard media coverage. WOC representatives held an insight dialogue with the Polish and international broadcasting entities. In the meantime, the in-depth analysis of all sports venues was prepared, as a necessary part of estimating resources needed for a TV production. We expect to complete the selection process in the third quarter of year 2015 and present the chosen HB in the Bulletin no. 3. Moreover, issues related to standard production and rights will be also introduced in the next release. 14 6. CULTURAL AFFAIRS a. World Games Plaza The World Games 2017, same as the previous editions of the Games, will not be made of sports competitions only. Although sport is what gathers people around TWG, a very important site on the Wrocław’s map of the Games will be the World Games Plaza. The WG Plaza is the central meeting point for citizens, visitors and participants to socialize and take in the games’ atmosphere in a spirit of international solidarity and cultural exchange. The place where one does not need to compete, because everyone is winning the first prize – positive, friendly attitude and lot of fun. The preliminary plans are to locate the Plaza in the very center of Wroclaw, on the Solidarity Square. This exceptional place not only gives the chance to be in the heart of Wroclaw, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, clubs and the historical part of the city (including Quarter of Four Denominations, Main Square, museums), but also is accessible from all parts of Wrocław, so that nobody may be excluded from enjoying it. Wroclaw Organizing Committee invites you to visit The World Games Plaza, as the 10th edition of TWG will not be only “The best Games ever”, but also “The best Fun ever ”! 15 7. The collection, analysis and distribution of this type of information is the task of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The aim of Wroclaw Spatial Information System, that was being created for several years, is acquiring, processing and presenting data concerning the spatial information and accompanying descriptive information about the objects of our city. That is how an enormous amount of so far scattered data could be collected in one place and presented in a way that significantly simplifies any analysis. SIS is constantly being supplemented and updated, becoming the basis for planning all activities related to the management of the city, and on the other hand-providing interested parties with complete and multidimensional data about urban space. Interactive map is a very useful tool for communication in cooperation, instant information about traffic and venue situation. Most important features are possibility drawing / moderating and customization of maps for one’s own purposes. Service is provided in English and German. Access to map will be granted for every Federation and Partner. http://gis.um.wroc.pl/imap/?locale=en&gui=classic 21 8. WROCŁAW EXTRA In each of our bulletins we showcase interesting facts about Wrocław. a. Africarium Motto: “We are not able to save everything we would like to. But we can save much more than could be saved if we had done nothing”. ~Sir Peter Scott Africarium is a worldwide unique complex presenting various ecosystems connected with water environment of Africa. It’s first oceanarium in Poland. In October 2014 Africarium was officially opened. Numerous aquaria, reservoirs and pools will display Red Sea coral reef, hippos, freshwater fish of Malawi and Tanganyika lakes, to mention a few. The depths of the Mozambique Channel, where sharks, rays and other large pelagic fish live, will be there to be admired from an underwater, acrylic tunnel 18 meters long. Next exposition will be devoted to the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, with penguins and brown fur seals. The jungle surrounding the river of Kongo will be inhabited by crocodiles, and manatees – amazing herbivorous mammals also called sirens. The Africarium complex, at the end of the construction works, will also include: conference hall, education hall, restaurant, observation deck, and souvenir store. 24 Africarium in figures The Africarium building is 160 m long, 54 m wide and 12-15 m high. It was built on an area of nearly 1.9 ha and its total volume equals over 184,000 m3. The Africarium is a three-storey building, including one underground level. Usable floor area of the pavilion is about 9,000 m2, utility area equals about 7,000 m2, and outdoor exhibitions occupy the area of nearly 7,500 m2. To construct the building, the total volume of 36,000 m3 of concrete and 4,800 t of steel was used, and 100,000 m3 of earth had to be removed. At the peak of construction works, during one shift there were about 700 workers who worked in a 3-shift system. In the whole Africarium water system, i.e. exhibition pools, filters, sludge tanks and kilometers of pipelines, there will be 15,000,000 liters of water (15,000 m3), which equals the volume of six Olympic-size swimming pools. The mass of sheer water alone in the Africarium is 15,000 tones, which equals the mass of 100 whales or 3,000 adult elephants. Exchange, i.e. filtering, of water in each of the pools takes about one hour. To "salt" The Red Sea basin and produce sea water, about 140 tones of salt is needed. Africarium is located in Wrocław’s ZOO, next to Centennial Hall. See you ZOOn! 25 10.
