2014-2015 Annual Report - Mercy Medical Center Dubuque
A LET TER FROM DAVE KRONLAGE CHAIR OF THE DYERSVILLE HEALTH FOUNDATION The Dyersville Health Foundation is pleased to have celebrated a number of milestones this past year. As with every organization, family, or business, it is important to reflect on the goals set and accomplished over time. With this annual report, we are excited and proud to share some of the strides we’ve made that would not have been possible without your steadfast support. This year marked the 10-year anniversary of the Dyersville Health Foundation providing financial support to our local Mercy Medical Center – Dyersville, Oak Crest Manor, and Ellen Kennedy Living Center. Your gifts have enabled us to enhance these facilities over the last ten years in a myriad of ways. As you can imagine, there is always something that could be done to improve the quality of care of the people who walk through the doors of these establishments. It may be a small item like a chair or a major item like a new van or a piece of cardiac care equipment. Whatever it is, you have helped make someone’s life better by donating to this organization. I would like to thank you for making all that possible. Another important milestone reached this year is that the foundation now has over $1,000,000 in assets that are working for us in some manner. Most of this money has been donated for endowments to secure the future of health care in our community and is not readily available to be used for just any purpose. The interest from these endowments is what can be used for special projects. Your Dyersville Health Foundation Board scrutinizes every dollar that is being spent, and utilizes these funds in the best possible way. We have a very diverse group of individuals on the board who can see the importance of the future of our local facilities. I would like to thank them and all our previous board members for donating their time and talents for the good of the Dyersville area in the past and for the future. Mission DYE RSVI LLE H E A LT H F O U N DAT I O N To enhance health care in the Dyersville area by providing financial assistance to health care service organizations including, but not limited to, Mercy Medical Center – Dyersville, Oak Crest Manor, and the Ellen Kennedy Living Center. Don and Helen MEYER It’s easy to recognize and appreciate the “can do” spirit of the community when Don and Helen Meyer tell the story about the group who decided Dyersville needed a hospital—and made it happen. Don and Helen have been a part of the planning from the very beginning. CARDIAC REHAB MONITORING The new telemetry system in cardiac rehab ensures that a patient’s cardiac well-being is continuously monitored while he or she is engaging in any physical rehab. The system also records data for patient progress reports and allows staff to monitor trend analysis over time so that patients’ improvements in cardiovascular function can be tracked and assessed. For the patient, just knowing that we have the state of the art equipment gives them confidence. When they complete cardiac rehab, they receive a printed final report of their progress. They can see their numbers, their progress, and the personal goals they met.” “Everyone really put their shoulders to the wheel,” recalls Helen. “The whole community responded with time, money, and labor.” The hospital has been a major asset to the community, thanks to the Meyers and other early leaders, as well as the countless donors and volunteers since then. “Our whole family has benefited from the hospital,” says Don. “It’s a God’s blessing to us.” John and Marie BREUCKNER PATRICIA A. GASSMANN ENDOWMENT FUND When Patricia Gassmann, a Mercy – Dyersville colleague, passed away unexpectedly in 2009, her family made a generous gift to create a lasting legacy in her memory. The Patricia A. Gassmann Endowment Fund was set up to support a scholarship program for certified nursing assistants who work at Mercy – Dyersville or Oak Crest Manor. Kelly Schanbeck and June Hardin, the 2015 recipients, each received a $250 award to be used to further their education. June Hardin John and Marie Breuckner built their lives in Dyersville, Marie starting out as a teacher and John as a pharmacist. They raised six children. They’ve seen a lot of changes in their community over the years, including the building of the hospital. Kelly Schanbeck I would love to thank the family of Pat Gassmann for the scholarship, and thanks to whomever nominated me. It is a true honor.” – June Hardin “We’re so happy to have Mercy here. And for such a small town, it’s wonderful,” says Marie. “We’re very grateful.” John and Marie have expressed their gratefulness with their long history of financial support for Mercy. And as residents of Oak Crest Manor, they can see the direct impact their support makes. It’s because of donors like John and Marie that Mercy, Oak Crest Manor, and Ellen Kennedy Living Center continue to thrive. – Sue Engelbrecht, RN, cardiac rehab Mark and Shirley SINGSANK GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM THE AUXILIARY In February, Mercy – Dyersville Auxiliary directors and board members approved over $30,000 in funding for various departments at Mercy – Dyersville, Oak Crest, and Ellen Kennedy Living Center. Some of the items funded include: – C arpet for the entrance to the hospital – H ospital bed, bedside table, and overbed table – W all guard for the hallway at Oak Crest – G lasses, mugs, bowls, and silverware for Ellen Kennedy Living Center BOARD OFF ICE RS President, Mary Lakeman 1st Vice-President, Diane Thier Secretary, Rosie Brunkan Treasurer, Chris Tomas ME MBE RS AT L ARGE Janie Ament Jeanette Bell Patti Bell Marian Brunkan Jeanette Digmann Betty Ehrlich Judy Geistkemper Diane Milz Rosie Platz Julie Ungs Donna Vaske Judy Woods Elaine Lueken Bob and Rosie PL ATZ There are some people you know you can count on. People who are always willing to lend a hand, and who are eager to do so. Bob and Rosie Platz are those people. Rosie likes staying busy, and her typical response when getting a call is, “What days should I be there?” But it’s obviously more than just wanting to stay busy. Bob and Rosie care about the community. That’s evident with the number of organizations they’re involved with. “I always like to be part of something,” says Bob. “It’s the way we were brought up.” Rosie has been particularly supportive of Mercy, volunteering her time with the auxiliary and at Oak Crest Manor. Bob and Rosie are also long-time financial supporters of the hospital, recognizing the employment and economic impact on the community. “It’s a great asset,” Bob says. NEW OVEN FOR BE T TER NUTRITION Dyersville Health Foundation received a $10,000 grant from the Dubuque Racing Association. The funds were used to purchase a combitherm oven for the nutrition department at Mercy – Dyersville. The oven uses only steam and dry air to produce healthier meals and preserves more of the food’s natural flavors, nutrients, and vitamins during the cooking process. Pictured: Laurie Steffensmeier, cook, Mercy – Dyersville We are able to offer traditional fried foods without the frying, which reduces fat and calories and provides a healthier option for our patients, residents, visitors, and employees. The combi has been a welcome addition to our department, and menu items prepared in the combi have been well received.” – Jane Clemen, nutrition director, Mercy – Dyersville When walking down the corridor toward the patient rooms at Mercy – Dyersville, you’ll see a plaque with the names of all those who donated to the first capital campaign to build the hospital. Mark Singsank’s parents are included. “My parents made a gift of $1,500, which I imagine for them at that time was a major gift. My parents were always very proud of helping to build the hospital,” says Mark. Mark and Shirley have continued that legacy of giving. “For us, our donations are investments into organizations we believe in and feel are important to improve someone’s life,” Mark explains. “You can’t give to every organization that requests a donation, so it is important to choose the ones that are closest to your heart.” And Mercy is close to their hearts. Shirley and their oldest daughter both worked as nurses at Mercy – Dyersville, and they had several relatives who were cared for at Oak Crest Manor. They know firsthand the importance of quality care. “We believe it is important for a strong community to have health care available locally and to have long-term care options as we grow older.” GAS CARDS GO THE DISTANCE Even the smallest of gifts can make a major impact. A favorite and easy donation the foundation often receives is gas gift cards for the Ellen Kennedy Living Center van. The bus provides a level of independence for the tenants, allowing them to enjoy shopping trips and outings. This bus has blessed us with so many fun outings and trips that the tenants love! We’re thankful to everyone who helps cover the cost of gas so that we can continue these outings.” – L ili Peterson, lifestyle coordinator, Ellen Kennedy Living Center ANNUAL DONORS GIF T- IN - KIND DONORS A LET TER FROM LIZ HEINS LIFE TIME DONORS DIRECTOR OF DYERSVILLE HEALTH FOUNDATION $10,000 + Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque Dubuque Racing Association/ Mystique Casino Mercy – Dyersville Auxiliary $2,500 – $9,999 American Trust & Savings Bank Fidelity Bank & Trust Meyer Mechanical Contracting Valentino Coin & Collectibles $1,000 – $2,499 Community Savings Bank Bill and Jeanette Digmann Elite Dental, P.C.
