Fiesta Sahuarita 2014 • 3 4 • Fiesta Sahuarita 2014 By Jerry Schultz History of Anamax Park A namax Park, site of Sahuarita’s 20th Anniversary Festival, exemplifies how good things can happen when disparate interests work together. Long before there was a town, there was Anamax, anchoring the community’s southwestern corner, sandwiched between what is now La Canada Drive and Interstate 19, north of Duval Mine Road. As a park, Anamax wasn’t much, with minimal playground equipment and a couple relatively flat, rock strewn ball fields. Anamax Mine, owner of the property, let residents keep livestock on the grounds, with pigs, cows and horses occupying modest pens and corrals. A small roping corral was built on the east side so weekend cowboys could test their skills in friendly competitions with neighbors. Retired high school industrial arts teacher Charles Oldham recalls the Pima County-managed park was “pretty basic.” An Enid, OK native, Oldham arrived in Tucson in 1956. He helped build a new Sahuarita elementary school in 1958 while attending Catalina High School. After working a couple years, he attended Eastern Arizona Junior College, then Northern Arizona University, where he received his teaching degree. He began teaching in Sahuarita in 1969 and was principal of the junior high school when school superintendent Ken Gose got the ball rolling for development of Anamax Park in the late 1970s. The mining company was willing to cede the property to the community with the stipulation it be developed as a park. The company worked with the school district because it was the only public agency in the community at the time. We knew everything would grow from that point.” And, grow it did as it evolved from mini stockyards and weekend roping contests to a municipal gem, with playgrounds and ever-expanding recreational opportunities. An ill-fated campaign to incorporate Green Valley in 1994 ultimately led to Anamax Park becoming a municipal entity. The proposed incorporation included retail-rich property north of Duval Mine Road occupied by K-Mart and Walmart shopping centers. Supported by the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council (GVCCC), the proposed alignment was contrary to a 1986 agreement with the Sahuarita Area Council (SAC) which stipulated Du“The mining company, school dis- val Mine Road would be the boundtrict and Pima County agreed Ana- ary between the two communities. max would sell the park land to the district for a dollar and the county One week after GVCCC filed an inwould lease the land from the district corporation petition with the counat no charge and manage the park,” ty on June 7, 1994, the SAC voted Oldham said. “Anamax wanted the to begin an incorporation effort of school district to own the property its own, immediately setting out to so local residents would have some get 10 percent of the required siginput in the park’s development and natures from area residents to place stipulated that the land would only the issue on a ballot. Happy Birthday Opening Early 2015 Fiesta Sahuarita Mural By Melissa Hinkle Event & Volunteer Coordinator Town of Sahuarita To celebrate the Town’s 20th Birthday, the Town Manager Kelley Udall wanted to do something different and special at Fiesta Sahuarita. This got the creative energies started with the town staff and thus came the idea for the Fiesta Mural. This mural was created from past highlights at Fiesta Sahuarita. It is a collage of pictures and activities that typically occur at Fiesta. The Mural includes two 8’x4’ boards that will be at the event to be painted by the community in paint by numbers fashion. Once complete the boards will be put together and preserved by Plexiglas so it can be hung in the breezeway at Town Hall for all to enjoy. This mural is the perfect way to promote community togetherness while preserving the memories of one of the best small town events in Southern Arizona. Valenzuela, Sahuarita Unifed School District Superintendent F or the past several years, the Sahuarita Unified School District #30 has operated under two local voter approved levels of support. The first of the measures, called a Maintenance and Operations (M&O) override, is targeted at specific organizational objectives, including: K-12 fine arts programs - SUSD schools offer general music, band, orchestra, and chorus as part of the regular curriculum. K-12 physical education programs - All SUSD schools have a fully certified professional educator in physical education. Physical education is part of the general instructional program in support of health and the total growth and development of students. Career & Technical Education (CTE) - SUSD offers about a dozen modern programs in applied fields including culinary arts, automotive technology, construction technology, precision manufacturing/ robotics, health professions, audiovisual/ multimedia, business management, nursing, photography, and fire sciences. The District is currently working with Pima Joint Technological Education District (JTED), Pima Community College, and many of the region’s major business partners to build a new program in industrial technology, which includes electrical power transmission, diesel technology, and heavy equipment operations. These 21st Century programs support integrated authentic learning, college readiness, and workforce development. NJROTC - This leadership development program teaches strong leadership skills, physical education, academic success, community service, citizenship, character, and patriotism. K-12 school guidance programs - Every SUSD school has at least one fully certified school guidance counselor. These professionals deliver a competency based guidance curriculum. This program addresses important life skill areas such as drug abuse prevention, conflict resolution, communication, stress management, and problem solving. Furthermore, guidance counselors provide targeted support to students, college and career advising, and crisis response services to students, as needed. This supports student wellness and the total process of delivering outstanding education. Campus safety and supervision school safety monitors are at every school and provide additional visibility, proximity, and student service. K-3 class size reduction - In support of individualized instruction and advancing a sound academic foundation for all students, the override targets the goal of class sizes at approximately twenty students for kindergarten, and enrollments in the mid twenties for grades 1-3. Furthermore, the District has chosen to offer full day kindergarten programs for all students. The second assessment, formerly a capital outlay override, and now called a District Additional Assistance (DAA) override, supports needed capital investments that are directly tied to instruction and critical school functions. These include: Textbooks - New academic standards require schools to regularly identify updated, modern resources as tools to meet the learning needs of students in preparation for new State assessments and educational outcomes. Instructional technology - Modern technology resources are integral to major initiatives such as Beyond Textbooks, Galileo individualized student assessments, digital literacy curricular programs, online instruction initiatives, and general instruction for 21st Century learning. This includes intentional initiatives to personalize instruction for every student. Classroom furniture - As a growing school community, SUSD is continuing to prepare new and update classrooms that have safe, up to date, and sufficient equipment, such as desks, chairs, laboratory equipment, musical equipment, and athletic equipment. Building renovations - These DAA funds also support needed building renovations such as mechanical units, new roofs, and carpeting. The proactive and intentional replacement and renewal of these physical resources is also critical for excellent service, student and staff safety, and efficient use of financial resources. School buses - The DAA funds also pay for the methodical purchase of school buses, which systematically supports quality service and safety. School buses in SUSD currently log over 650,000 miles annually. The District is committed to operating transportation services in buses that are m e chanically sound, safe, well maintained and up to date. For the last four years, and going forward, bus purchases are being made for vehicles that are equipped with air conditioning functions. In the last several years, the District has lost the majority of its allocated State capital funding for such purposes to State budgetary reductions. For example, for this fiscal year, the Sahuarita School district was allocated about $2,600,000 in funding for capital expenditures. However, the State reduced this amount by about $1,600,000, leaving the District with only approximately $1,000,000 for the entire scope of capital needs for the year. The local investment of the override allows the district to continue meeting basic service needs in regards to capital outlay. Students, staff, programs and the greater community have been recognized at the State and National levels for educational and professional excellence, and achievement in these areas. For example, the robotics and construction technology programs have both had programs and students win at Skills USA competitions at both State and National levels. The NJROTC unit qualified for the regional JROTC “Super Bowl” competition in California, and continues to be designated as a Distinguished Unit. Our interscholastic programs are an important part of a b a l anced and total educational experience. The Sahuarita HS football team earned honors as Division III, Section II Champion last year. A recent Walden Grove HS student athlete, and now alumnus, Trey Cashion, earned two State titles in swimming last year, just two years after the launch of our high school swimming programs. The SUSD Governing Board has called for renewal of the 14% Maintenance & Operations (M&O) override, and continuation of a $1,000,000 annual District Additional Assistance ( D A A ) override. This areas supported by this local investment are identified in advancing the District’s new SUSD 2020 Directions Plan, approved by the Governing Board. The SUSD 2020 Directions Plan includes bold and intentional action steps including high level programs, systematic instructional planning, individualized instruction, and regional strategic partnerships. These include National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), Beyond Textbooks, 21st Century Learning Centers, and Sahuarita WINS! The items supported in this additional local support have been overtly identified as being an integral part of a high quality education in today’s rapidly changing and demanding world. 100.7FM Fiesta Sahuarita 2014 • 13 Fiesta Sahuarita COULD NOT HAPPEN with out the help of our valued sponsors. Dozens of films made their way around the country’s theaters, most with similar plots and outcomes. Bad guys were treating town folks badly until good guys arrived to settle the score. EUREKA!!! have an opportunity to sip some sarsaparilla, regardless the color of their hats, and if they don’t like it, won’t have to pay for it. She said she and her son, Nick, 24, were looking for a “small, fun business” and discovered the soda while researching on the internet. The pair started the business 15 months ago and, with Michelle’s husband, Loren, named their enterprise “Eureka,” connoting the culmination of their search. That’s the promise of Michelle Feldman, proprietor of Eureka Old Fashioned Soda, who’s bringing her covered wagon filled with a variety of cool drinks “We sell unique old fashioned to the festival for the soda,” Feldman said. “It is low first time. She’ll be coming down from Gold Canyon, 30 miles east of Phoenix in the shadow of the Superstition Mountains. pet, stuffed rattlesnake is put on display. Since they inaugurated their soda business at a garlic festival the Eureka wagon has made stops a couple times a month throughout Arizona at fairs, rodeos, carnivals and fiestas like Sahuarita’s, where it’s making its first visit. The wooden wagon rides to events on a trailer. As the plots unfolded, you could usually tell the good guys from the bad when the cowpokes sidled up to the bar in the town’s saloon. The bad guys, frequently wearing black hats, ordered whiskey, often telling the barkeep to leave the bottle on the bar. It wasn’t unusual for them Feldman said her to bang their glass on the bar when vendors will hang a sign on their display they finished a shot. inviting visitors to The white-hat-wearing good guys sample the brew. Eureka is the soda people are searching for.” She said they purchased an old covered wagon from the Amish in Pennsylvania, who are among the few making the wooden wheels today. They outfitted their wagon with six oak barrels through which the soda is drafted. The manufacturer supplies the soda in sealed containers which are connected to the barrels when the Eureka Old Fashioned Soda wagon opens for business. Customers know soda is served when Eureka’s WE FOCUS ON YOUR CARE Soda flavors include root beer, birch beer, black cherry, vanilla crème soda, sarsaparilla and diet root beer, sweetened with Splenda rather than cane sugar. All the syrup is processed in Pennsylvania. Birch beer is made from extracts of bark from birch trees. It is said to be sharper and sweeter than root beer in flavor, with a minty aftertaste. Black cherry is described as sweet and tart. Sarsaparilla, with some birch influence, and root beer are related in flavor through sassafras extracts. Vanilla crème, like all the others, boasts all natural ingredients. All owe their origins to the efforts of colonial and pioneer beer consumers, who, without traditional raw materials, had to be creative in their brewing practices. Keepsake, old-fashioned metal cups are part of the Eureka experience. Feldman said beverages are dispensed in 32-ounce tin cups for $8. The same size steel cup is $10. Refills are $4. An 18-ounce red, solo cup is sold for $3. And, if customers want to belly up to the soda bar with their own vessels, they’re welcome, notes Feldman. “We’ll fill them up.” At Arizona Institute of Urology, we have been providing comprehensive care focused on you for more than 30 years. While the number of fiscal-year 2013 permits for single-family residences surpassed fiscal 2012 totals, fiscal 2014 saw permits issued dip to 855 from 859 and permits for single-family residences drop to 169 from 267. The town issued 1,151 business licenses in fiscal year 2013, compared to 1,045 the previous year, according to Economics Development Manager Victor Gonzalez. Business license cancellations also increased from 60 in 2012 to 87 last year. and light industrial growth,” Gonzalez said. “The challenge is to have it shovel ready so someone can come in and turn it around quickly. Developers like to see land have some onsite and offsite improvements such as water and telecommunications in place. We have the land, but the question is how do we prepare it for development? For the most part, zoning is in place and there are areas with specific plans.” He said a business outreach program to identify ways government can support local businesses has been developed by the town. Victor Gonzalez, Sahuarita Economic Development Manager annually promote the town to delegates attending the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conference. “This allows us to approach more than 1,000 retail/ commercial exhibitors and network with many more attendees,” he said. “Most importantly, we deliver a very strong message by demonstrating He said the region’s proximity to on behalf of our public sector that the town is ‘open for business.’” “Some job growth is going to come from existing businesses,” Gonzalez noted. “We want to support them and be a resource through a small business development center. We’ve had a couple workshops and have met one-on-one to find ways to help grow their businesses.” “Robson Communities has maintained fairly steady permitting bringing a new product on line and D.R. Horton has purchased lots in Rancho Resort and will be building age-restricted housing on smaller, single-family lots. We’re going to see more housing diversity with a range of price points. I think this will be good for the market with these smaller houses.” At the other end of the scale, more noted, Richmond is building luxury homes in the 4,000 sq. ft. range at Madera Estates. “Overall, housing will become more diverse and that bodes well for consumers,” Moore Gonzalez said the town’s economic said. development strategic plan is being updated and will include She feels new housing regionally a target industry report, regional is negatively impacted by the review and identification of sub- depressed real estate market which industry clusters exploring how the has driven prices down in older Sahuarita’s economy may advance. homes.
