Each year at the Common Ground Awards
Celebration, the Metropolitan Pima Alliance
“recognizes community leaders, projects and events
that create a successful collaboration for the overall
benefit of the community.” The Sahuarita Town
Center was acknowledged as the leading project for
Community Building in the region for 2012.
Through a collaborative relationship between
thirteen different for-profit, non-profit and
government partners, eight related projects were
completed this past year in the Sahuarita Town
Center, which enhance the quality of life for
residents. The projects include development of
educational facilities, the aquatics center, the
Rural/Metro fire station, the new Church of Latterday Saints’ Stake Center, the Town Center Freeway
Monument, the expansion of three main roadways,
the landscape beautification of Santa Cruz Valley
United Methodist Church, and creating public art
in the Sahuarita Road underpass.
According to Bob Sharpe, Founder of Rancho
Sahuarita, since Sahuarita’s inception in 1994,

Celebrating 10 Years of Lifestyle
On Saturday, December 15th, key
dignitaries and leaders from the Town
of Sahuarita and the Rancho Sahuarita
Company came together to celebrate the
Rancho Sahuarita 10th Anniversary Finale
Celebration.
The celebration was held at “Winter Fest,”
a collaborative event between the Town
of Sahuarita and Rancho Sahuarita. The
10th Anniversary Finale culminated a year
of festivities, celebrating the remarkable
evolution of the Rancho Sahuarita
community.
Attendees from the Town of Sahuarita
included Mayor Blumberg and other
current council members. Past town council
members included State Representative
Rosanna Gabaldon and Marty Moreno.
The event included a special program, which
honored each of the dignitaries present,
and was followed by speeches from Rancho
Sahuarita Founder, Bob Sharpe, and the
Mayor of the Town of Sahuarita, Duane
Blumberg.
Sharpe spoke of the early years of Rancho
Sahuarita and the vision to create a vibrant
lifestyle for families: “When the first house
went in, the lake was barely half filled, the
clubhouse wasn’t built, and there wasn’t a
grocery store. Those pioneering families
believed in a vision of a beautiful community with lots of amenities. Ten years
later, it’s amazing to see how our lifestyle has evolved.”
Sharpe continued, “With nearly half of Rancho Sahuarita remaining to develop,
we still have a lot to do. And we can’t do it alone. I’m grateful to have a great team
in all of our staff, and grateful for all of the people that have helped to make this
dream a reality.”
In addition to celebrating the past ten years, the Sahuarita Town Center was
recently honored for the Metropolitan Pima Alliance’s Common Ground Award
for “Community Building”.
The award celebrates projects that become possible thanks to the cooperative
efforts of varying organizations, companies, and individuals, and celebrates the
spirit of collaboration. Due to the efforts of as many as thirteen partners, 8
different projects were completed in the Town Center over the last year.
To commemorate their efforts, key partners from the project were invited
to take part in the celebration and were welcomed to the stage to receive their
awards.
Yvette Ensign, the primary landscape architect for all of Rancho Sahuarita,
commented after receiving her award, “I am so proud of this project. Seeing
families having so much fun in the spaces we all created, makes all the years of
hard work worth while.”

FINANCIAL FOCUS
Lower Debt Levels Mean Greater Investment Opportunities
In the past few years, Americans have done a pretty
good job of whittling down their debt load. If
you’re in this group, you may now have a chance
to use your lower level of indebtedness to your
advantage — by investing for the future.
Consider the numbers: In 2007, just before the
financial crisis, the country’s household debt service
ratio was about 14 percent. (The debt service ratio
is the ratio of debt payments, including mortgages
and consumer debt, to disposable personal
income.) But by 2012, this figure had dipped below
11 percent, the lowest level since 1994.
These figures are national averages, but they do
translate into real-life savings for many of us. If
you’re in this group — that is, if you’ve lowered your
debt payments noticeably — what should you do
with this “found” money?
Of course, you could spend it on material objects,
which, in some cases, may make your life more
pleasant today. But you’d probably be better off by
devoting your financial resources to your goals for
tomorrow, such as college for your children and,
eventually, a comfortable retirement lifestyle for
yourself.
Consequently, you want may want to consider
these suggestions:
• Increase your contributions to your retirement
plan. Try to put more money into your employersponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b)
or 457(b). Your contributions are typically made
with pretax dollars, so the more you invest, the
lower your taxable income. Plus, your earnings can
grow on a tax-deferred basis.
• Fully fund your IRA. You can put in up to $5,000
per year (as of 2012) to a traditional or Roth IRA,
or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. A traditional IRA
grows tax-deferred, while a Roth IRA can grow tax- • Establish a 529 plan. If you have children or more benefits from debt reduction by using

In 1776, the Presidio of Tucson became a walled

“The Old Pueblo.” Although that nickname was
given so long ago, Tucson is still known as “The
Old Peublo” to this day. Some of the walls built
back in the 1770s are still standing today and have
been preserved for public viewing.
When it comes to giving garnets as gifts, they are

collaboration among state parks that will sponsor programs.
guided “First Day Hikes” on New Year’s Day 2013.
These “first day hikes” give families and individuals
the opportunity to come together, meet new
people and take part in an activity that everyone
can enjoy. Everyone eats a ton over the holidays
and now you can use this hike as an excuse to
jump-start your family’s hiking season.
This second annual event is providing a great
opportunity for people to get outside and start
losing that holiday weight. There are five Arizona
State Parks within a 2-hour drive from Sahuarita
that will take part in the nationwide collaboration.
“Arizona State Parks is happy to participate in this
national event on January 1. We are committed
to promoting outdoor recreation as a way to get
the kids outside and unplugged from their video
games and other electronic media,” says State
Parks Director Bryan Martyn.
Here is some information about the five “first day
hikes” near Sahuarita.
Catalina State Park: 8 am. Meet at main trailhead.
No children under 10 and no dogs. Enjoy the
Canyon Loop/Sutherland/50-year trail “Big Loop”
which is a 7-8 mile hike and a 600 foot elevation
gain. Pace is slow but moderate. You must register
for this hike by 4pm the day prior to the hike by
calling (520) 638-5404 with Gaston Meloche.
Bring water, snacks and good walking shoes.
Kartchner Caverns State Park: 9-11 am. Take a
guided hike of the Foothills Loop Trail. Hike will
include discussion of plant life, geology, hydrology
and conservation. The hike will last approximately
2 hours. Visitors should bring their own water, hat
and sun protection. Camera and/or binoculars
suggested, but not necessary.
Picacho Peak State Park: 10 am. Meet at Sunset
Vista Trail Head for an approximately 4 mile
Ranger lead hike. The hike will be a moderate hike
on the backside of Picacho Peak. Bring hiking
boots, sun protection, and at least 1 liter of water.
Roper Lake State Park: 10 am. Meet at gatehouse.
Minimum age 7. Length of hike is 2.25 miles.
Bring sturdy shoes, binoculars, water, layered
clothing, and camera.
Patagonia Lake State Park: 9 am. Meet at Visitor
Center. Hike the Sonoita Creek-Blackhawk Loop
to Vista Trail. See several different habitats and
a variety of birds and wildlife with guides. Bring
sturdy shoes, binoculars, water and snacks or
lunch. The first stage of the hike is 2.75 miles
round trip. If you choose, continue to the Vista
Trail. The entire hike is approximately 5 miles and
4 hours long. Call (520) 287-2791 to register.
For more information about the program or to
obtain a full list of the hikes, call (800)285-3703,
