We hope you will have opportunity soon to visit us at Taylor Home and see for yourself this wonderful new addition to our campus. We’d told you a short while ago we’d let you know more about memorial gift opportunities, including details regarding the engraving of the garden’s paving stones with personal messages of reflection. There will be two sizes of pavers from which to choose, one 7-3/4” X 11-3/4” with 3 lines of text for a $400 donation, and the other 7-3/4” X 15-3/4” with 4 lines of text for a $750 donation. The sizing of text and number of character spaces available is currently being decided and will be provided to you soon. As you know, the Garden is to be paid for entirely with memorial donations. A former resident’s family initiated the project with a substantial gift, but more donations are needed. We hope you will consider this as you visit our beautiful new garden, and thank you in advance for your support. Please contact Maureen Ballester at 366-1236 for more information. Welcome New Staff Philips Lifeline technology has enhancements, including GPS tracking Lifeline systems, ready and on the market! There has been a lot of anticipation and many questions as we’ve been anxiously awaiting this newest technology. Please join Diane Poh on Thursday, July 23 at 1:00 p.m. in the Elm Room at Woodside to learn more about the latest updates to the Lifeline Program. Back Bay residents, please join Diane at 66 Taylor Drive, Wolfeboro, on July 28 at 10:00 a.m. to learn about these updates. Please RSVP at 366-1203. SAFETY NOTE: It’s warmer weather, and many folks are out walking. Please remember these safety tips: 1. Always back into parking spots instead of driving into them. This improves safety when “leaving” your spot. 2. As a pedestrian, always use sidewalks or walking lanes. 3. If you are crossing a parking lot, please leave your vehicle and walk directly to the sidewalk. Do not walk behind parked cars. 4. Remember our speed limit on roadways is 19 miles per hour. This is TOO fast for Parking Lots. 5. If you cannot see all around your vehicle ̶ do not put your car in gear and move it! Reposition so all angles are clearly viewed, and without obstruction. Woodside Store News Residents Ted and Chris Faller have graciously agreed to take over management of the Woodside Store. Derrick Mitchell joins us as Maintenance Supervisor. From New York, Derrick attended NYU where he earned a degree in Engineering. His work experience includes managing the first pain hospital in the United States, safety officer, engineering and housekeeping. Derrick loves to fish, and he and his wife, who plays the accordion, enjoy yard sales. The Store Committee with be meeting with Ted and Chris to introduce them to the members and their respective roles as well as familiarize them with the whole process for ordering, stocking and maintaining store items. The Committee asks for your patience and understanding during this transition period. Welcome to Taylor Community! Thank You! Page 3 Grand Opera Houses of Laconia Exhibit On Display at Laconia Public Library These community gathering spots were used for everything from vaudeville and variety show to graduations, weddings and town meetings. Laconia was fortunate to have several of these architecturally beautiful locations. This exhibit shares the history of these important community locations through pictures and artifacts ̶ big and small… Those featured include The Moulton Opera House, The Lakeport Opera House, The Gardens Theater, The Colonial Theater, The Folsom Opera House and Casino Auditorium. The Grand Theater Drapes that originally hung in the Moulton and Lakeport Opera Houses sit in the exhibit hall facing each other… a rare opportunity to see both of these spectacular pieces of history. This exhibit is free and open to the public, so please call Dial-A-Ride Monday ̶ Friday between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. if you would like a ride to view this wonderful exhibit. If Laconia Historical Society Executive Director Brenda Kean knows in advance that anyone from Taylor Community is coming, she will gladly give you a tour of the exhibit. Brenda can be reached Monday ̶ Friday at 527-1278 or 520-9946. Elaine Morrison and Dick Smith of Lakes Region Disabled Sports (LRDS) provided an interesting presentation for residents at Woodside July 8. For more information about LRDS call 737-4365. Coffee with the Chief Wed., Aug. 5 at 11:00 a.m., Woodside Enjoy coffee and conversation with Laconia Police Chief Chris Adams, pictured above with his sons. Work progresses on the Reflective Garden at Taylor Home. Page 4 TRIPS FLIER – AUGUST 2015 UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED, SIGN-UP CAN BEGIN TUESDAY, August 4 To sign up for trips call 366-1234. The park is also home to the Ravine Studio, the Formal Gardens, the Picture Gallery and several nature trails. The trails are hilly in places and may be slippery when wet, so visitors are asked to wear sturdy shoes if planning to walk the trails. Pathways around the park are of various surfaces; grass, brick, asphalt, bark mulch, cement and gravel. Because of the historic nature of this site, some of the pathways may be uneven and you are asked to take care when walking around. Please plan on an early lunch and at least 90 minutes are suggested for the site visit. The park entrance fee is $7.00 payable in cash at the entrance station. A collection of fully-operational military vehicles lie at the core of the museum's collection. The museum store has wonderful gifts for any history buff. The entrance fee is $8.00 and payable at the museum entrance. Wolfe's Tavern's Chef Hoke Wilson and his team put a sophisticated spin on favorite comfort foods. Friday – August 28 – Cog Railway followed by lunch in the Peppersass Restaurant. [Easy] Ride the Cog Railway to the Summit of Mount Washington via the new, more modern and eco-friendly biodiesel engine train. Sue needs to purchase train tickets well in advance (by or before July 20) as they do sell quickly during the summer months. You will have a late lunch at the Peppersass Restaurant, located in the Mansfield Base Station, and you will have time to browse through the gift shop before heading home. As the temperature averages in the mid-50’s on the summit, you are advised to dress in layers. Tickets are $63.00 for a 3-hour round trip that includes a 1-hour travel up and back and 1 hour to explore the summit with an optional observatory tour for $10.00 payable on your summit arrival. The summit staff would like to know in advance how many people will be taking advantage of that tour so please tell JoAnn when you call. Early sign-up by or before July 20 was requested. Page 6 TC Chorus Hiatus The Taylor Community Chorus will be taking a break for the summer months, with rehearsals resuming in September. New members are always welcome; mark your calendar and join us September 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Taylor Home Atrium! Staying Hydrated in the Summer Heat Summer is here, and wow, is it getting warm outside! Thirsty? Proper hydration helps to keep the body and vitals regulated. Dehydration is a common health issue that can lead to bigger problems if proper hydration is not made a priority, and is a common cause of hospitalization of older adults. Seniors are especially prone to dehydration and should take extra care. As we age, our ability to notice changes in body temperature may decline, our body water content decreases and our kidney function diminishes, making it harder to conserve fluid. Many medications and underlying health conditions can also increase susceptibility. Fluid intake is key. Keep water readily available and consume it throughout the day. Try adding a slice of lemon or lime to add flavor. And be sure to eat fruits and vegetables daily, which are great sources of water and also full of important nutrients. Pay attention to symptoms of dehydration and drink more fluids if you experience dry mouth, tiredness, thirst, dry skin, headache, decreased urine output, constipation or dizziness. And always call your health care professional if you experience severe symptoms. Correction: Cog Railway Trip 8/28 A convenience stop at the Concord bus station was incorrectly listed in Bulletin Volume 126. Sorry for that! Please note that we are headed north, not south, and will not make a stop in Concord. Meal Plan Payment Changes If you have recently eaten a meal at Woodside, Ledgeview or Taylor Home you might have noticed a change to the point of sale system used to ring up your meal purchase. This is part of the new Answers on Demand accounting system. Please be patient while the servers get accustomed to this new system. As a result of this new system there is a change to the way meal plan payments are made. When you wish to put funds into your meal plan, the payment will no longer be processed through the cash register. Checks for meal plan funding will now be accepted only at Taylor Home by Maureen. The check will be posted to your meal plan account as it is now and will be reflected in your account balance. Your receipt will continue to show the remaining balance in your meal plan account. We are moving towards being able to bill meal plan funding via your regular monthly account and this option will be coming shortly. We encourage you to continue to use your meal plan as the 5% discount for purchases made through this meal plan is a very attractive discount. Please call Ed Soucy at 3661229 if you have any questions.
