I am pleased to welcome you to our 2015-2016 edition of the Jefferson County Community Guide. The Madison Courier produces this guide each year as our community continues to evolve. Visitors and residents want the latest information to help them take advantage of our community’s many assets. A new bridge connecting us with our neighbors in Kentucky gives our community new momentum into the future. If you haven’t walked across the new bridge pedestrian walkway, you should give it a try. We hope that you will take time to enjoy the people, natural beauty and the many cultural opportunities that our community has to offer. There is no shortage of things to enjoy here. If you are looking for something delicious to eat, there are more than 50 diverse choices ranging from fine dining to fast food. We have festivals and events that appeal to a wide range of people. You can watch the fastest boats in the world race on the Ohio River, eat your way through Ribberfest, listen to some great music at RiverRoots, enjoy the arts at the Chautauqua or check out the antique farm machinery at the Neavill’s Grove Old Settlers Meeting. These events and many more are wonderful ways to enjoy our community. Jefferson County is rich with recreational opportunities. If you enjoy outdoor recreation, the Ohio River, Clifty Falls State Park and Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge offer a variety of options. We also have several public parks, golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts and the beautiful Heritage Trail. If you prefer to stay indoors, we offer many educational and artistic opportunities with historical locations and galleries. Shopping options in our community are abundant. You can find unique, locally produced items in the array of specialty shops. We also enjoy the convenience of national retail stores. And don’t forget to check out the Farmers Market in Madison for local produce and goods. Construction began in 2008 and the park went on to play a large role in the 2009 celebration of Madison’s bicentennial. The park, which fills approximately 4.3 acres, now serves as a location for many recreational events in the city and hosts community picnics, outdoor movies and festivals including the RiverRoots Music and Folk Art Festival and Ribberfest. The current incarnation of the park features an ampitheater, terraced seating and restrooms. Madison’s Heritage Trail stretches from the Madison State Hospital grounds to the corner of Vernon Street and Vaughn Drive, connecting the hilltop and downtown. The idea for the trail was first conceived in 1995 and it is a constant work in progress in an effort to improve the trail for visitors. The trail is approximately 1.4 miles in length and parking is available at both the top and base of the trail. It is suitable for jogging, walking and hiking and is open from dawn to dusk. The Heritage Trail Conservancy is the volunteer-based organization dedicated to the preservation and management of the trail. www.heritagetrailconservancy.com www.facebook.com/HeritageTrail “Taste the Adventure” 118 W.
