Mission MOTHER McAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational community committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as life-long goals. ABOUT McAULEY A small group of Mercy Sisters arrived in Chicago in 1846, led by Frances Warde, Catherine McAuley's closest friend. Within weeks they opened a "select school" that became St. Francis Xavier Academy for Females, the first school chartered in the city of Chicago. The course of study covered primary, secondary and collegiate levels. The first building was located on Wabash Avenue between Madison and Monroe Streets. When the Chicago Fire in 1871 destroyed the original building, St. Francis Academy relocated to 29th and Wabash for a short time, then to a larger site at 49th and Cottage Grove in 1900. In the 1950's, the southwest side of Chicago needed a Catholic girls' school to serve a fast-growing population. In 1956 "the Academy" relocated once again. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and St. Xavier College (which is now a university) opened in the fall of 1956 to serve secondary and post secondary students respectively. McAuley opened with 523 students, 300 of which were first year students. McAuley has continued to expand. Today approximately 1400 young women and 150 faculty and staff members form the McAuley community. CHARISM Mother McAuley was dedicated to serving those in need. She had strong faith, courage and initiative. Others joined her and worked with her because they too believed in the dignity of all persons. They also believed that one must work actively to make the world a better place in which to live. CHALLENGE The young women of Mother McAuley High School have inherited a great tradition and a great challenge. They are challenged to preserve the faith and make it grow, to have the courage to live by the Catholic values they believe in, to take the initiative to be women of the 21st century - educated women who will respond to the needs of others. The faculty, staff and administration share in Mother McAuley's call to educate young women. The challenge for the future requires the commitment of each person who helps form the community of Mother McAuley High School. SERVICE Service is an essential dimension of the mission of the school. Through direct service and with reflection, students respond compassionately to the needs of the community and critically reflect on needed societal systemic change. Giving Thanks We are pleased to present the Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School 2010 Annual Report. This past school year marks the completion of our 164th year of Catholic education in the Mercy tradition. We are grateful to the Sisters of Mercy for entrusting us with their mission to develop young women as confident, well-educated and strong leaders for the future. Nancy Hill-Davis Chair, Board of Trustees We are truly thankful for the generous financial support from our board, Sisters of Mercy, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and neighbors. We need to ensure that a McAuley education remains within the financial reach of our students by keeping tuition rates affordable and by providing financial assistance to those families that need help. This delicate balance can only be accomplished through our ongoing partnership with individuals and organizations. Given their rigorous liberal arts education, we are confident that our graduates are thoroughly prepared for college. The Class of 2010 has the proud distinction of having achieved a 100% college acceptance rate. They also received over $23 million dollars in college scholarship funds. In fact, we believe that each of our alumnae enjoys a “Lifetime of Advantages” as a result of their unique McAuley experience. Christine Melone, Ed.D., President/Principal In this Annual Report, we will acknowledge our supporters, present our financial results, and share some stories of our success at McAuley. Whether you are a donor, alumna, parent or friend, we are certain that Mother McAuley has touched your heart in some way. Please continue to support and/or participate in our sacred mission and help us spread the message of Catherine McAuley to others. We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and in the words of Catherine: “Provident God, pour out your blessings on our benefactors. Their goodness has encouraged us; their gifts have enhanced our efforts to recreate your merciful presence in our world. In gratitude, we ask you to reward them with signs of your generous love and, when their lives on earth are over, to welcome them to your heavenly banquet. Amen.” Nancy Hill-Davis Chair, Board of Trustees Dr. Christine Melone President/Principal Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School 1 A Celebration of Giving The name Celebration, given to Mother McAuley’s largest fundraiser, is all encompassing. The literal definition of celebration is the essence of what the Mother McAuley premier event stands for: to show happiness that something special has happened by eating and drinking together or playing music. At Mother McAuley’s annual Celebration Endowment Fundraiser, we celebrate our honorees, donors, guests and our school community as a whole. Our Honorees During the Celebration event, we honor individuals who exemplify the charism and values of Catherine McAuley; carry on the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy; and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to our mission. The care and concern they show for even the smallest of tasks exemplify their true love of McAuley and its community. They selflessly give their time and energy to keep the students, faculty, staff and Sisters of Mercy safe, and ensure McAuley is running smoothly at all times. Operation Haiti and the EcoMacs The students in the EcoMacs Club began building a solarpowered biodiesel processor in November 2009 with the intention of donating it to a school in Haiti months before the The McAuley EcoMacs Operation Haiti team region suffered the devastating earthquake. The students designed a processor that would combine a natural resource with a natural energy source to create a sustainable system for producing fuel. The natural resource is the seed of the Jatropha plant which grows abundantly in Haiti. The solar powered processor will heat the oil rich seeds of the Jatropha plant. Once heated, the oil is easily extracted, mixed with Methaoxide and agitated in order to separate the glycerin byproduct from the oil. Once the glycerin is removed, the pure biodiesel fuel created can be used by farmers in their tractors. The glycerin byproduct will also generate a source of income for the village since it can be used as fertilizer and made into soap. Any excess energy generated by the solar panels for the biodiesel processor will be used to provide electricity for the school. The hope is that with electricity, students beyond sixth grade can continue their education by attending classes at night. The young women in the EcoMacs Biodiesel Team have learned much more than just the steps in building a biodiesel processor. These students have learned how their work goes beyond the streets of Chicago and will impact the people of Pichon, Haiti for generations. The EcoMacs have received national attention for their hard work including being named a 2010 Grand Prize Winner in the prestigious Lexus Eco Challenge; a winner of the True Heroes contest, and the “Education Vision Award” from the Keep Chicago Beautiful organization. Day of Service The nearly 400 members of the Mother McAuley Class of 2011 stepped out of the classroom and into the community for their Day of Service. “Service is an essential component of Mother McAuley’s mission and by having the students spend a day outside of the classroom The first annual “Day of Service” immersed in helping others is a great lesson,” said McAuley Service Coordinator Molly Meade-McGowan. The students visited more than 20 different sites throughout Chicago. Some of their work included reading to preschool students at St. Martin DePorres House of Hope in the Woodlawn neighborhood; preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House at Comer Children’s Hospital; sorting and boxing up shoes at Share Your Soles in Alsip; helping with activities at the LaSalle Senior Center and Misericordia on the North Side; as well as cleaning up the lake front with the Chicago Park District 63rd Street Beach Restoration Project. At the end of the day the students returned to McAuley for a prayers, reflection and spiritual music by the Harmony, Hope, and Healing Choir, led by Marge O’Connell Nykaza ’72. Haiti/Philippine Benefit The McAuley community rallied together and raised nearly $6,000 to donate to the Holy Cross School in the Philippines and the Catholic Relief Service for help in Haiti. Half the money raised was donated to the Sisters of Mercy at the Holy Cross School in the Philippines. The convent and a portion of the school were completely destroyed in a fire and needed to be rebuilt. The other half went towards the earthquake victims in Haiti. Donations of diapers, baby wipes, and other sanitary items were also collected. Off the Street Club The Spanish Honor Society used a portion of the money raised during their annual cookie dough sale to buy clothing, toys, books, games, and sporting equipment for the Off the Street Club. The SHH students purchased $1,200 in gifts to deliver to the Club’s annual holiday party hosted by Huen Electric, Inc. The Off the Street Club is the oldest boys and girls club in Chicago. The Off the Street Club helps its members turn away from lives filled with gang violence and drugs. This is the third year SHH has used a portion of their fundraising money to donate to this most worthy organization. Students Giving Back Below are some of the numerous ways the students of Mother McAuley unselfishly answer the call to respond to the needs of others. • Raising money through Volley for the Cure • Making dinner for the residents at Ronald McDonald House • Hosting a Halloween Food Drive • Collecting Toys and Food at Christmas Time • Sponsorship through the Adopt-a-Family program • Donating Easter Baskets to needy children • Knitting Blankets for Babies • Participating in a Blood Drive • Planting a tree on Earth Day • Walking in the Crop Walk and Beverly Breast Cancer Walk. Mary Kay was an alumna from the Class of 1970 who passed away in January 2004 of ovarian cancer. A scholarship was set up in her name to help current seniors who are struggling to pay their tuition. Mary Kay strongly believed in the McAuley education and that every student should have the opportunity to complete her four years here. The event raised $4,500 and the afternoon’s success will allow a senior to finish her education at McAuley. As the five daughters of a wonderfully caring and loving mom, the Bigane girls knew they had to plan something special for their mom’s 80th birthday. The Bigane family has been part of the Mother McAuley community for over 30 years. The five girls, Anne ’76, Katie ’78, Sheila ’79, Meg ’82, and Julie ’84, are all alumnae of the school. Their mom, Mrs. Edward Bigane, has played an active role in the community since Anne was a freshman. The girls thought what better gift than to give back to McAuley on behalf of their mom. The Bigane family and friends raised money that was dedicated to tuition assistance as well as helping current seniors receive the full McAuley experience. 24 Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School 3737 West 99th Street Chicago, IL 60655 www.mothermcauley.org NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PAID RESCIGNOS MAILING SOLUTIONS “No matter how small the gift, God gives the increase.” - Catherine McAuley
