How do I g et g r eat tattoo?
With so many studios and artists around, your decision on where to go and what to get may be difficult.
Here are a few tips to help you on your tattoo journey.
First rule – find professional tattoo artists that works in city licensed premises. Tattoo beginners who tattoo out of
residential homes are usually not licensed and have no tattoo or safety training. Tattoos are for life and so are some
communicable diseases. Licensed studios are required to pass health board inspections and follow guidelines.
The Edmonton Tattoo and Arts Festival is an invite only event. All artists must tattoo at an elevated level to be
approved for a booth which means it is a great place to research local and international artists.
You need to find an artist that tattoos in the style you like. Finding an artist that specializes in what you are looking for
will increase the quality of your finished piece.
Have a good idea of what you want but keep it limited in the amount of elements you to include. Tattoo studios have
a saying of “five pounds of shit in a two pound bag”, which refers to a client who want too many different elements in
their one tattoo piece. You can imagine that things can get messy pretty quick.
Seeing a great tattoo online or in a magazine can give you ideas but not the rights to that piece. Avoid asking an artist for an exact replica of a tattoo as it is
someones tattoo already and an artist may have spent significant time creating an original piece for their client. A great artist can create your own unique piece
making the tattoo that more special.
Get something different! For a truly amazing piece, and for those brave enough, give the artist full creative license. This can often lead to some of the artists
best work as all barriers in the creation process will be removed.
If you have found the perfect artist, have trust in what they will create will be amazing, and try not to direct the artwork
too much. A lot of clients reject pieces that are “not what they imagined” but realistically if you want an amazing piece, a
true artist will push the boundaries and often come up with something original.
Please don’t price shop. Most artists have hourly rates that reflect the experience they have. An artist who has 20 years
under their belt can usually tattoo 2-3 times as much area than a beginner who is cheaper. This means you are actually
getting more tattooing done for your hard earned money. Also with experience usually comes great talent which will show
in your final piece.
Always check portfolios! A portfolio usually contains the best tattoos that artist has produced so if there are “iffy”
tattoos in the portfolio you might want to expand your artist search.
