A Message

John T. Auberger
Greece Supervisor
As Supervisor of the Town of
Greece, it is a pleasure for me to
welcome you to the newest edition of the Greece Community

will find very helpful.
Please take advantage of all that our great community has to

Town Campus regularly for the many community events we
offer for our residents. Please take advantage of the many programs offered at the Community & Senior Center, the Greece

As your Supervisor, I take a great deal of pride in our Town and
Town Government. The Town of Greece will continue to be an

will keep the lines of communication open between residents
or businesses and elected officials. Please feel free to contact

gov. Working together, the business community, residents and
Town government, will continue the tradition of Greece as a
great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Sincerely,
Situated between the beautiful
shores of Lake Ontario and the
historic Erie Canal is the Town of
Greece, Monroe County’s largest town. Over 93,000 residents
call Greece home and make it a
diverse, welcoming community. As
the largest Town in the Rochester
area, there is no question that
Greece grabs the headlines quite
often. Two and a half years ago,
I moved home to the Rochester
area to take this job with the
Jodie Perry
President & CEO, Greece
Greece Chamber. I am proud to
Chamber of Commerce
call myself a Greece resident. Why?
Let me tell you a little bit about the Greece Community that I
have come to know.
There are lots of places to live, but what determines whether
someplace has a real sense of community? The people who live
there do. They make or break the perception of a community
and I would argue that Greece has a tremendous sense of community. How do I know?
I could point to the parents, fellow students and businesses
that rallied around a terminally ill young girl to give her a prom
experience she would not otherwise have had. I could also tell
you about how the parents of another young woman who
tragically died two years ago created a scholarship fund in her
memory to help students they have never even met. How about
a story we all know? The students of Greece Athena rallying
around Jason “J-Mac” McElwain during his memorable debut on
the basketball court made news around the world. Something
that doesn’t always get headlines but is extremely important is
the business support of the community. Everyday businesses in
Greece are asked to contribute to worthy causes to help their
neighbors, students, teams and others –and they do!
And that’s just a start. I don’t have enough space to give you
specifics about the civic clubs who annually raise tens of thousands of dollars to help the community in countless ways, or
the hundreds of volunteers that selflessly give their time and
talents to worthy organizations in the community. I’m sure
each of you could give me dozens of stories that would demonstrate the amazing sense of community we have here.
I have often heard area leaders encourage people to be more
optimistic and proud of the Rochester region. I agree. I also
think that we, the residents of Greece, should be even more
proud of where we live. We need to tell others about the wonderful things that go on here.

We should all hold our heads up a little higher and be proud
of the amazing sense of community that we have right here in
Greece.

their local elected officials for the Eggs & Issues breakfast series.
In 2009 the Chamber is introducing several new programs including an innovative community leadership training program called
“Leadership Greece.” Each year this program will take 20-25 established, emerging or future local leaders and give them in depth
leadership training and community awareness. Also in 2009 the
Chamber is introducing a “Small Business of the Year” awards ceremony, expanding their popular Small Business Success Training
Series and created a members-only online social networking site
called “SuccessLink.”
“The Chamber realizes the challenges that all businesses are currently facing and we are working hard to ensure that we remain
a vital part of their success,” said Jodie A. Perry, President & CEO.
“We’ve expanded and enhanced several programs and have
added new cost saving benefits for our members.”

Greece, the town that has it all!
EARLY HISTORY
In the early 1300s, Algonquin Indians and the Iroquois began settling
along the shores of Lake Ontario, near its bays and ponds and in the
Genesee Valley. As their civilizations grew, and the Seneca joined
the Iroquois League, paths through the woods became main thoroughfares, many of which are still in use today. According to local
historians, many of the main roads in town, including parts of Ridge
Road, Long Pond Road and Dewey Avenue, were constructed along
these paths.
The first settlers to the area, arriving in the 1790s, were William
Hinchey, a Revolutionary War veteran, and James Latta, a merchant
seaman. Though no documentation exists, it is believed that the Latta
family was heavily involved with the famed “Underground Railroad”.
Slaves seeking freedom in Canada were reportedly hidden in Samuel
Latta’s warehouse in Charlotte where they awaited transportation
across the Lake.
THE OFFICIAL BEGINNING
The Town of Greece was incorporated in 1822. It was named after the
country of Greece as a show of support for the Greek people who
fought for their independence from Turkish rule. The name is also a
tribute to this old-world nation – a symbol of intellectual and athletic
excellence.
The Town of Greece was formed from the northern part of the town
of Gates. In 1823, expansion of the Erie Canal resulted in the development of the southern part of town. Mason workers came from Europe
to help build the canal and often settled here. Many of them built

cobblestone houses, some of which still stand today.
Throughout the 1800s, the local economy centered on agriculture.
Many of the beautiful farmhouses that were built during this period
have been converted for commercial use. The Upton-Paine house,
now Ridgemont Country Club, is one such home. The Greece Historical
Society currently occupies the charming Larkin-Beattie-Howe house
built in the 1850’s. (Gordon Howe, former Greece Supervisor, raised his
family there.)
CHARLOTTE
The history of Greece would not be complete without mentioning
Charlotte. Incorporated as a village in 1869, Charlotte was the center
of the community for many years. Its quaint lighthouse has been pictured in the town seal since its inception.
In the early 1900s, the Manitou Trolley carried summer vacationers to
the many resort hotels along the shore of Lake Ontario. It cost only a
nickel to go from Charlotte to Manitou Beach, crossing Braddocks Bay
on a wooden trestle. In 1916, Charlotte was annexed from Greece to
become the 23rd Ward of the City of Rochester.

NEW BEGINNINGS
The turn of the century brought about changes which shifted the
economic focus from agriculture to industry. Photography magnate
George Eastman opened the first Kodak plant in 1891. Kodak became
the largest employer in the area, and its success fueled the Town’s
growth. Further economic development was also spurred by local
grocers: brothers John and Walter Wegman founded Wegmans Food
Markets, in 1931. Wegmans has been expanding ever since, and is
recognized as one of the country’s premier grocery operations.
The shift from agriculture to industry was also a result of devastating
crop losses in 1934. An unusually severe freeze that winter destroyed
many orchards. Additionally, World War II brought about the building
of more industrial plants to support the war effort. Post-war peace
combined with a swell in population throughout the late 1940s and
50s, led to even more industrialization and commercialization, especially along Ridge Road.
Greece Olympia, the town’s first high school, was built in the 1960s.
With the town’s population approaching 75,000 in 1970, many new
shopping plazas and churches were formed. Park Ridge Hospital was
built in 1975 on Long Pond Road, and the Historical Center opened
on English Road in 1978.
RECENT HISTORY
One of the most important new developments was in 1983 with the
construction of the I-390 highway running north from Ridge Road to
the Lake Ontario Parkway. Another remarkable development was the
formation of The Mall at Greece Ridge in 1994. It was formed when
Greece Towne Mall and Long Ridge Mall were connected, making it
one of the largest shopping malls in the northeastern United States.
In 1997, the town government moved to its new location on Vince
Tofany Boulevard, and the old town hall on Ridge Road was demolished as part of the redevelopment of Ridge Road. The original
cupola from the old town hall was saved and is now part of the Greece
Historical Center and Museum, in the old Larkin-Beattie-Howe house,
now on Long Pong Road.
In 2008 a major reconstruction of the West Ridge Road Corridor was
completed, improving the flow of traffic for over 40,000 vehicles daily.

Monroe County International Airport is just minutes
away traveling south on 390, making it easily accessible for visitors. Rail connections are at the eastern
border. Despite the large size both geographically and

Though Greece has enjoyed strong growth for many
years, there are still many development opportunities
in the Town. Residential development is growing in the
northwest section of the Town. The commercial corridor on Route 104 is continuing to expand westward
with two large developments currently being proposed.
Eastman and Canal Ponds Business Parks both offer
excellent locations for manufacturing and office space.
There is also land along the historic Erie Canal on the
southern border of Greece that is available for mixed
use development. With its strong population and high
traffic counts Greece will remain a strong draw for businesses for many years.

commercial areas in Greece include Long Pond Road, Mt.

Though Greece has a good selection of national brands
located in town, there are also countless small businesses located here ready to serve your needs. Locally
owned retail establishments such as Van Putte Gardens
and Rockcastle Florist provide top notch service and
selection to their customers. The Dewey Avenue corridor is home to many locally-owned small businesses in
the retail, service and professional sectors.
Greece also has a strong service and professional business community. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, insurance agents and financial planners are just a few examples of the professional business community located in
Greece. The health care industry is particularly important to our town since we are home to the Unity Health
System.
The Greece Chamber of Commerce has been serving the

Greece, NY is the largest suburb of Monroe County with
almost 100,000 residents. In spite of its size, however, the area
has a real sense of community and people often remark that it
is a big “small town”. There are many reasons to live in Greece

of the community. The Jennifer J. and Elizabeth G. Hildebrant
Hospice Center is operated by Lifetime Health on the Unity
Hospital Campus. This 11 bed facility was built in 2008 to
embody the hospice promise of comfort and dignity at the

Greece, the town that has it all!
Students attend the designated school serving their residential area. However, our District operates both Schools of
Choice and Signature Schools which families can choose to
attend regardless of where they live. Applications for these
schools may be obtained and must be approved by the
Office of Student Services at 585-966-2331. For information
concerning which school a new student will attend, call the
Program Evaluation Clerk at 585-966-2314.
Educational programs prepare students for post-secondary
education and employment success through curriculum
supported by a long-range plan for the use of technology.
Instruction is provided in a safe environment which honors
student diversity. Four Greece Central high schools offer the
more than 4,500 students in grades 9-12 a college preparatory program with increasing Advanced Placement and
acceleration opportunities and enrollment. There are opportunities to pursue Regents sequences in the core academic
areas, as well as business, technology, home economics, art,
music, and world languages.
Greece Central students are recognized locally, nationally,
and internationally for contributions as part of bands, orchestras, and other performing groups. Student artwork has won
prestigious national awards, and each year middle and high
school drama groups raise thousands of dollars for local
charities. Student athletes achieve high athletic honors, and
are strong competitors across the county, state, and region.
Hilton Central Schools
The Town of Greece is actually served by three public school
districts including Hilton Central which covers the northwest
part of Greece. Led by Superintendent David Dimbleby,
Hilton serves approximately 4,500 students in three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.

Spencerport Central Schools
Spencerport Central Schools serves the southwestern portion of Greece. Led by Superintendent Bonnie Seaburn,
the district educates over 4,000 students annually in four
elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
The District maintains an active partnership with the Town
of Ogden in sharing athletic fields and school facilities. The
District also enjoys active community involvement with
residents' input on budget advisory committees, key leader
search committees, parent associations, planning teams and
sports and extra-curricular involvement.
The district strongly supports the school wide enrichment
model with four dedicated enrichment specialists who serve
the elementary and middle schools. Odyssey of the Mind
teams in grades 3-12 receive strong community support and
have brought home numerous state and world championships. The Leadership program at the Middle School, Peer
Listeners at the High School, and Peer Mediation in all of the
district's schools help students develop strong leadership
skills and resolve conflict constructively. The district has an
extensive volunteer program with more than 1,100 volunteers providing support to teachers and students every year.
For more information on the Spencerport School District
please call 585-349-5000.
In addition to the three public school districts, Greece has
several private schools serving the area residents. Greece
Christian School, Mother of Sorrows, St. Lawrence and
Northstar Christian Academy all offer educational opportunities to area residents.

Lifelong learning is encouraged in Greece through the
Greece Community Education office. They offer community programs through enrichment classes for adults and
children, adult literacy training, workforce development program, the Bridges program for non-traditional high school
learning and before and after school programs. For a complete listing of their services visit their website at Greece.k12.
