ROBERT HUTTON 216 Kenwood Drive, Louisville, KY 40214 As a boy in 1956, neighbors Mr. And Mrs. William J. Duncan, Bedlington Terrier breeders, started taking me to dog shows and kennel club meetings with them. They gave me my first Bedlington to show in “Childrens’ Handling Classes”. I was lucky to get such a good start with these kind people and this fine dog who was a grandson of the famous Ch. Rock Ridge Night Rocket of Westminster and Morris and Essex Best-In-Show fame. This first dog of mine also won a 5-point major at the old Morris and Essex as a nine-month old puppy and won many groups with handler Wilda Woehr of the noted Bo-Beep Bedlington Kennels. In 1959 I became a member of The Bedlington Terrier Club of America. A few years later I helped found the Lake Shore Junior Kennel Club and in 1964 became a Member of the Lake Shore Kennel Club. Later, as a teen, I finished many dogs from several different breeds for friends. I also owned and finished Dalmatians, Brittanys, and Italian Greyhounds. Next, as a young adult, came my interest in Dandie Dinmonts and jobs with the handlers Norman Austin, Jack Funk, and Edna Voyles. Just before my 22nd birthday I became AKC’s youngest licensed handler. At that time the licenses were breed limited and within 5 years I had been approved for 5 of the then 6 groups and 10 breeds in the 6th one. As a handler, I enjoyed many successes mainly with the Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Sighthound breeds. Several of the most notable were: the top winning Dandie Dinmont of all time. A record that held for 30 years until Harry came to the United States from Australia. Also finishing 25 Irish Wolfhounds for one client, and owning and handling the first liver Bedlington to win a group. And owning and handling seven generations of top winning and producing Bedlingtons, I call the boys, going back to my first dog, including the sire of Centurian the #1 dog of all time in the breed and Butchie, the second top winning Bedlington of all time. I have been a member of the Louisville Kennel Club for 25 years. My judging assignments have taken me across the USA as well to Canada, Taiwan, China, and Japan. I am most pleased to have been able to judge specialty shows for at least 25 different breeds. My first judging approval from AKC came in 1999. As of now, in 2010, AKC has approved me to judge all Terrier breeds, Toy breeds, Non-Sporting breeds, the Miscellaneous Group and Best-In-Show. I reside on a quiet hillside in Louisville with my two Dandie Dinmonts. All Terrier Club Photo Contest for 2010 Specialty When you submit your photographs, please indicate which of the following category(s) you want them considered in: A. Portrait (non professional) B. Terriers and kids or people C. Cute Terrier Puppies! D. Terriers and 4 legged friends. E. Terriers in Action (moving shots) F. Comical or humorous image including a terrier. G. Miscellaneous (too good to not send in but not fitting in a category above). Please submit photos for the contest prior to October 1st by email, to Jim Miyashita at jimjm@shaw.ca The winning photographs will feature a strong combination of the assets we seek in an image. These include: thoughtful attention to lighting, eye-catching colour; balanced composition; sharpness; correct exposure; and a host of other elements. 1. Composition – “rule of thirds” – is the photo balanced? 2. Focus (sharpness) – the picture, above all, needs to be in focus (or, if the picture features some blurriness, it has to be a clearly intentional, artistic use of blur by the photographer). 3. Exposure & colour - pleasing colours with clarity and correct exposure 4. Creativity/artistry - Does the photographer show an artistic eye? Do they seem to notice the unique and the unusual and make the most of it? Did the photographer use creative techniques to make an interesting effect? Photos will be judged by a panel of 2 members of the Clear Focus photography club, who will not necessarily know terriers or even dogs so photos will be chosen on their artistic merit, rather than their representation of conformity to breed standard. Placings will be awarded 1st to 3rd in each category and will receive ribbons. Only 1st place will also get a prize in addition to the ribbon. All photos submitted will be deemed as coming without copyright unless specified. Winning photos will therefore be published in the newsletter and on the website and other photos submitted may be as well, depending on space availability. Other use of the photographs on approval only! A couple of hints! 1) no borders on the photos – crop them out and 2) hide your signatures or copyrights so they don’t detract from the pictures (if applicable). Our Assurance - Our judges are dedicated to three things: • Judging images exclusively on quality rather than on the name, skill, or equipment of the photographer. • Being open to all kinds of excellence, and • Refraining from photo snobbery. Now do send in your pictures! and have fun taking them! MS. GABRIELA KRIZKOVA In 1959 I became a member of The Bedlington Terrier Club of America. A few years later I helped found the Lake Shore Junior Kennel Club and in 1964 became a Member of the Lake Shore Kennel Club. MS. CHARLOTTE CLEM MCGOWAN 15 Sargent Park, Newton, MA 02458-2319 235 Stratford Avenue Burnaby BC V5B 3X7 Later, as a teen, I finished many dogs from several different breeds for friends. As of now, in 2010, AKC has approved me to judge all Terrier breeds, Toy breeds, NonSporting breeds, the Miscellaneous Group and Best-In-Show. I reside on a quiet hillside in Louisville with my two Dandie Dinmonts. By 1980 he had purchased show quality bulldogs and began breeding under the prefix "Priority" Bulldogs. After his marriage in 1990 to wife Gail, they began a new kennel and changed their name to "Come-Pat-A-Bull Bulldogs". Their motto has always been 'Bulldogs are our life, not our living" which is also the case in his judging career. He does not do it for the money, rather for the love of it. They also began breeding French Bulldogs under the same kennel prefix. Recognized throughout the world for his in depth knowledge of dogs, Mr. Sangkunakup is one of very few individuals licensed to judge All-Breeds everywhere dogs are exhibited. He is routinely the guest of fanciers in U.S.A , Canada , South America , Russia , Scandinavian, Australia , New Zealand , Japan , China , South East Asia as well as his native Thailand . While looking forward to actively pursuing his judging career domestically and abroad, he continues to campaign his outstanding Thai bred dogs in the United States. His current top winner is MBISS Ch. United's Sweet Sensation “Sweetie”. Our first dog show was held in October 1986 and the members have built this annual October event into the Largest dog show in Canada. This show is held the last weekend in October and draws public spectator attendance of unequaled numbers. We also hold our three day Pot of Gold Shows each spring at the at the Agri-Plex, Cloverdale Fairgrounds, Surrey B.C. We have set the standard for Quality in dog shows in Canada. The philanthropic objectives of the club are to promote the welfare of purebred dogs and to create an appreciation, on the part of the public, the value of purebred dogs. Our members come from varied backgrounds, have a love of different breeds of dogs and participate in many aspects of the sport. This brings diversity and knowledge to our club. Most notable is the work ethic, great energy and support of each other. The extensive Club mandate includes financial support of many worthwhile organizations for juniors, dogs, shelters, hospices, hospitals, social service agencies and legislation groups promoting non breed-specific laws with responsible ownership. We conduct 35+ handling classes each year and sponsor the Judges Education Program at Tynehead. We welcome everyone to our shows and wish everyone a wonderful experience.
