THE TALE OF THE CHEMIN DU ROY
“Last August, I made it down to Québec City from Montreal in
four and a half days by sedan chair.”
Quote from Lanouiller de Boisclerc, Grand Voyer, 1735
AT THE TIME, THE
CHEMIN DU ROY WAS
THE LONGEST ROAD IN
EXISTENCE NORTH OF THE
ST. LAWRENCE RIVER.
The Chemin du Roy was used for over a
century and a half by messengers and
travellers who made their way by horsedrawn carriage, stage coach, mail coach
and by sleigh during the winter. There
were once up to 29 way stations.
Due to their location, some of the most
popular stops included Berthier, where
lunch was always served, Trois-Rivières,
for an overnight stop, as well as
Deschambault. It was possible to make
the trip in two days using fast horses!
Today, Route 138 still follows most
of the original course, from Québec
City to Repentigny, passing through
Trois-Rivières.
The Chemin du Roy is the coastal
twin of the St. Lawrence River. Follow
it to the end and retrace the history
of Québec through its stunning
landscapes and fascinating heritage.
The Chemin du Roy is the authentic
New France road, still thriving in the
21st century, and the first carriage road
to link Québec City to Montreal.
Photo: Michel Julien
At the beginning of the 18 th century, the road network covered only a very small part
of New France’s vast territory. Although some country lanes and segments of road
were to be found here and there, a road joining Montreal to Québec City had yet to
be built.
In 1706, the Grand Council (Conseil Supérieur) decreed that a road be built to
connect the settlements along the North shore of the river. Work began in 1731,
under the supervision of senior road surveyor (Grand Voyer) Jean-Eustache
Lanouiller de Boisclerc, and was completed in 1737.
Upon completion, the Chemin du Roy was 7.4 meters wide, over 280 kilometers long
and crossed 37 seigniories.

AGRITOURISM & RESTAURANTS
CASTEL
DES PRÉS
The Castel des Prés opened in 1954
and has always maintained an excellent
reputation.
For many years, the “Chez Claude”
Restaurant garnered international
acclaim by winning numerous awards
for their traditional French cuisine. In
1986, in keeping with the times, a second
restaurant opened in the same building
and was modeled after a wine bar.
Thus was born the L’Étiquette wine bar.
Again, in response to the expectations of
our clients, we merged the Chez Claude
and L’Étiquette menus in 2005 to create 2
different sections, each with a distinctive
atmosphere, while serving the same
diversified menu at Castel des Prés.

Donnacona owes its
existence and development
to the construction of a

The grounds overlooking
