Principal’s Newsletter
Northeast High School
May/June 2016
Dear Northeast Parents,
The springtime is an exciting time of year around a high school. If your student is a senior, they
get to enjoy those traditional “memory makers” for the high school experience, like prom and
graduation. If your student is taking AP courses, they get to finally tackle that AP exam they
have been working so hard for all year. If your student is a 9th grader, they can see the end of
their first year of high school and know they made it. They can look forward to feeling like a
“seasoned veteran” ready to take on the 10th grade. If your student is an 11th grader, they are now
looking forward to their final year of high school and are excited about getting to where they want
to go once they achieve their diploma. Yes, accomplishment brings a lot of excitement.
During this exciting time, we also want to make sure students don’t lose focus on the “end game.”
That celebration does not turn into despair. For seniors, it’s helping each other make good
decisions while celebrating the conclusion of high school, and their journey into the next phase of
their futures. For juniors, it’s making sure they take the SAT before their senior year begins. For
freshmen and sophomores, it’s finishing their course work that will be their building blocks
towards a solid future in college and career readiness.
Parents, please join the faculty and staff at Northeast High School in continuing the meaningful
conversations on how to “finish strong.” Please continue to speak to your students about staying
away from drugs and alcohol. Also, if your student, or a loved one close to your student, is
battling addiction to please seek help. Resources are available in our Office of School
Counseling. Additionally, please continue the conversation with your student about remaining
E-Free for their 4th marking period, and ultimately their 2nd semester. The students’ Scholarship
Challenge for 4th marking period is to be 90% E-Free at each grade level. Please continue the
conversation about not accepting the “E;” to do the work it takes to get credit in the course, and
utilize NHS Hour to its fullest benefit. Finally, continue the conversation about what your
student wants to accomplish after high school, and how they are taking the courses currently to
get them there.
Together, let’s continue to engage our Eagles in activities that further the celebration of their
accomplishments.
We Are Northeast,

News from FACS-Child
Development
Students are busy planning the ceremony and
celebration for our preschool graduates. Our
roster is full for the 2016-2017 preschool year,
but we are still accepting names for the waiting
list. We accept four-year olds and mature
three-year-olds. Children must be able to
independently use the bathroom. Preschool
will open the first week of November on
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The
cost for the entire year is only $80. Please
email Mrs. Zell at lzell@aacps.org to be placed
on the waiting list or for more information.
Sixteen Child Development students have earned the
MD 90 +9 clock hour certificate for child care. This is
based on grades, attendance, and portfolio.
The Northeast Culinary Team worked very hard this
year preparing for the Maryland State Student Invitational
Competition. The competition is designed like the Food
Network Show “Chopped”. The students have 60 minutes, two
butane burners, and no electricity to complete an appetizer,
entrée, and dessert. The meal this year was our Spectacular Crab
and Shrimp stacked salad, Rockfish Pistachio Tournade, and our
famous Texas sheet cake with Raspberry Mousse. Two identical
plates must be presented to the judges, one for tasting, and one
for photos.
The team has been planning and working together since
November to prepare for this competition. Team members
Brittany Bancroft, Marisa Brown, Rebecca Dove, Carl J.
Harding, and Kyle Schwartz created, and re-created recipes,
practicing twice a week for the past four months. While most
students are sleeping in on Saturday mornings, my team was
cooking away from 9am until we finish. We finished 1 minute
late which cost us 1 point. We came in fourth place by .67! If we
had finished on time we would have placed second. I am very
proud of my team!
The last two years we have won the state competition
and represented Maryland at the National competition. After our
evaluation this year we hoped to bring home another
championship. All of the chef judges raved about all of our
dishes. The competition always comes down to fractions of
points, and even though we did not place this year my team
represented Northeast superbly. Next year I have only one team
member returning with whom we will start the building for
another team.
Last Summer 18 students from Northeast High travelled to Iceland for an
Eco-Adventure that they will, no doubt, long remember. We toured the
capitol city of Reykjavik, soaked in the hot springs of the Blue Lagoon,
explored lava fields and climbed onto a glacier! And they learned to say
Eyjafjallajokull (the name of the most famous volcano in Iceland).
This summer, 17 students will be travelling to Puerto Rico to explore San
Juan (the capitol), and travel to a fort used in Pirates of the Carribean, to one of the largest caverns in
the US, ride horses through the only rainforest in the US, zipline through the treetops, and paddle into
the bioluminescent bay at night! It's gonna be awesome.
In 2017 students are invited to travel to Peru in South America where they'll learn the culture there,
travel to Machu Pichu, and take a motor canoe trip into the Amazon rainforest.
Northeast High School students are seeing the world and having adventures that most people only
dream of.
As they say, JUST DO IT!

For Your Information
Saving for college is about to get a little easier for Maryland's lower-income families.
Maryland residents who enroll in the state's 529 college savings plans next year could receive an annual
donation of $250 from the state thanks to legislation approved by the general assembly. State officials
have agreed to offer matching grants to encourage low- and moderate-income residents to participate in
Maryland's 529 plan. Wealthy families readily use these investment plans because the earnings typically
are free from federal and state taxes so long as the funds are used to pay for college expenses. To get a
wider range of families on board, Maryland will now match contributions on a sliding income scale.
Yearbooks hold special memories, and your child will treasure hers forever.
The cost of the yearbook is $100 plus tax.
Students with pre-ordered books are invited to an after-school book signing party
with music and refreshments available. The last day to pre-order books
online is May 15. Only students who have pre-ordered books will be able to
receive their books during the party.
After the book signing party, leftover books will be sold on a first-come-firstserved basis during A block of NHS hour, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and
after school. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to give your child the memories
only a yearbook can recall.

IMPORTANT Senior Portrait Information
Dear Rising Seniors and Parents of Rising Seniors:
Your senior year is quickly approaching, and that means it’s time to take Senior
Portraits! Senior portraits will be taken in May, July, and September at Northeast
High School. Lifetouch / Prestige will assign a date to you by postcard. NHS Yearbook
works only with Lifetouch for yearbook portraits. So even if you will NOT be
purchasing photographs through Lifetouch, but you DO want your senior portrait to
appear in your senior yearbook, you should still have your portraits taken by
Lifetouch on your assigned appointment date in order to appear in the yearbook.
Remember!
If you do not have your portrait taken by Prestige, your
portrait will NOT appear in the yearbook. It costs nothing to
have your yearbook picture taken, so be sure you come to
school on the correct day and time to have your picture
taken even if you are not purchasing portraits. If you miss
your appointment, please come on one of the make-up days
after contacting Lifetouch / Prestige.
It is important that once you receive your proofs from Lifetouch that you go online
and select the portrait that you would like placed in the 2017 yearbook. Choose ONLY
a picture taken in the traditional tux or drape with a BLUE BACKGROUND. If you
select a portrait with anything other than a blue background, the yearbook staff will
choose an appropriate one for you.
Finally, please understand that the senior portrait pages of the yearbook must be
completed by our staff by the end of September. Therefore, if your portraits are not
taken and selected by September 27, your senior portrait will not appear in the
yearbook. If you have any questions, please contact Monica Lynch at
mllynch@aacps.org.
Thank you for your cooperation,
2017 Northeast High School Yearbook Staff

Dear Principal,
Thank you for your school’s participation in last year’s Summer Reading Club program. With your help,
more than 17,000 people participated in the annual initiative, which helps prevent the dreaded ‘Summer Slide’.
We are pleased to report the program saw an 11 percent increase in participation over 2014.
We are working diligently to finalize plans for this year’s program, On Y our Mark, Get Set, Read! We are
excited to offer some exciting new performers, programs and prizes for participants.
We are also thrilled to offer online registration for the first time ever. Students, teachers and parents can
sign up for the Summer Reading Club, through Beanstack, a web-based program that allows participants to easily
track books read, earn rewards and receive personalized recommendations of children's books and apps
handpicked by staff. We hope this will make participating in the program, easier and more fun! We invite you to
visit our website www.aacpl.net for information about signing up starting on June 6.
After much consideration we are also discontinuing the Chesapeake Cup contest. While we enjoyed
acknowledging the work of one school per year, the contest prevented us from doing more promotion of the
Summer Reading Club in schools as to not give an advantage to schools near our branches. We believe that
promoting the Summer Reading Club in as many venues as possible, we’ll be able to impact our young people
more effectively and see higher participation. We hope you understand this decision.
We continue to appreciate your commitment to our mutual goal of creating lifelong readers and learners.
We look forward to seeing your students, teachers and parents in our libraries this summer.
Sincerely,
Hampton “Skip” Auld
AACPL Chief Executive Officer
