ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC PARISH
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners of St. Elizabeth,
Two weeks ago I went to Queen of Apostles Parish in
Pewaukee for the dedication concert of the former St.
Casimir organ. In the midst of the first snow storm of the
season many parishioners also made their way through the
elements. Once everyone arrived safely at the parish we
first began praying Lauds together. It was in the midst of
the prayer in which we witnessed the blessing of the organ
and having it named after St. Casimir, the parish from
where it came. Following Lauds was a concert put on by
the conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and
some of its members. Each song showcased a certain part
of the organ. While I was listening my mind went through
the entire process of making that happen. From the
recruitment of volunteers to taking apart the entire
instrument piece by piece. All in the cold of winter since
there was no heat in the church building. Packaging all the
pipes. I remember having to purchase every last box of
bubble wrap in the city of Kenosha. Finally having the parts
brought to Queen of Apostles and seeing it slowly come
together. When we have our minds set on accomplishing
something I am amazed as to what can happen.
Witnessing the concert reminded me of how our two
parishes were able to do something so incredible for the
Glory of God. It is with that thought that I turn to Advent.
Imagine what can be accomplished when we put our whole
selves into the experience of Advent, when we cooperate
with God’s Grace in being drawn closer to Him. This
weekend the Church proposes the figure of John the
Baptist for our meditation. The Messiah’s coming was
preceded by prophets who announced his arrival. John
appears as the dividing line between the two Testaments,
the Old and the New. Our Lord himself teaches something
about John when He talks about the law and the prophets
down to John the Baptist. He is the personification of
antiquity and the announcement of new times. As
representing antiquity, he is born of elderly parents. As one
who is a harbinger of new times, he shows that he has
been a prophet from his mother’s womb. He has not yet
been born when at our lady’s arrival he leaps for joy inside
his mother. John is called the prophet of the most high
because his mission is to go before the lord to prepare his
ways teaching the knowledge of the salvation of his people.
We are encouraged to do what John the Baptist did. We
should not be content with living at peace with ourselves
and not worrying about others until we are prepared first.
We have already been won for Christ! It is our duty to let
others know of Him and to live as a witness of Christ in the
world. We should try to live our lives according to the
doctrines of Christ. We should struggle to make our actions
remind others of Jesus and his love. We should act in a
way that others will be able to say, “Here is a Christian.” My
friends let us be like John the Baptist in helping to prepare
ourselves and other people for Christ. This is a season for
inviting people to come to church or even to come back to
church. Let us use Advent to once again unite ourselves to
Christ and to invite others to come and do the same.
Sincerely,
Fr. Sean Granger

OUR CATHOLIC FAITH
Apologetics
To defend and explain the teachings, beliefs, and
practices of the Catholic Church
Q – How late can I be for Mass and still fulfill my Sunday
obligation?
A – Many people hold to the traditional opinion that if one
arrives after the Gospel reading, then the Mass does not
count in fulfilling one’s Sunday obligation. But the current
Code of Canon Law, the official law of the Church, makes
no such declaration. Common sense would tell us that if
you miss the consecration, you have obviously “missed” the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, but there is really no official
Church teaching on “how late is too late.” Perhaps this is
because if there were, the Church might be seen as
dismissing certain earlier parts of the Mass as unimportant.
And perhaps this is because the Church wants to
encourage us to be present from the entrance hymn.
If a husband plans to meet his wife at a restaurant for a
fancy dinner date, does he ever ask, “Honey, how late can I
come and still have it count as a date?” Not likely. A better
question would be, “How early should I be for Mass?” or
“How much time do I need to prepare myself to celebrate
the most profound mystery of my faith?” Being late for Mass
on a regular basis reveals a lack of proper reverence, and
may even be something to bring to confession. That being
said, everything from last-minute diaper changes to a traffic
jam can make people late for Mass on occasion.
What about leaving early? Some have referred to the
practice of exiting the church right after communion as “the
Judas shuffle.” Remember that Judas left the Last Supper
“early” to go and betray Jesus. As a sign of respect, one
should remain standing through the recessional hymn until
the priest has processed down the aisle. Dashing out the
door right after the final blessing may be a sign that,
perhaps, we aren’t aware of who we have just received in
the Holy Eucharist.
We need to remember that Jesus is truly present within
us until the natural qualities of the host dissolve. It is a good
idea to remain for a moment or two in silent thanksgiving for
the profound gift we have received. St. Thérèse of the Child
Jesus has written, “Let us detain ourselves lovingly with
Jesus and not waste the hour that follows Communion. It is
an excellent time to deal with God and put before Him the
matters that concern our soul … As we know that good
Jesus remains within us until our natural warmth has
dissolved the bread-like qualities, we should take great care
not to lose such a beautiful opportunity to talk with Him and
lay our needs before Him.” And St. Louis de Montfort said,
“I would not give up this hour of Thanksgiving even for an
hour of Paradise.” While we aren’t expected to pray for an
hour, we certainly should not rush out the door. We will
miss not only that focused time with Christ, but the final
blessing from Him as well.
Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who
asks you for the hope that is in you, but do it with
gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15-16)

CHURCH DONATIONS
Are you considering a donation to the church for tax
purposes? If so, please be sure it is received and
dated no later than December 31, 2015.
Our Wisconsin weather is changing, bringing us the flu
and cold season along with snowy/icy conditions.
Throughout the winter please remember these points:
·
·
·
·
Don’t come to Church with the flu or a cold in a
stage which may be contagious. While you may
feel up to coming to Church, you may inadvertently
infect others.
If you are concerned about catching a cold, you
need not shake another's hand at the Sign of
Peace. Just give a friendly nod and wave.
Do not feel offended if one chooses not to greet
you with a handshake at the Sign of Peace.
Use caution with strong winds, rain and snow. We
do our best to clear snow and ice, but sometimes
our parking lot and sidewalks may be icy.
GIVING TREE
We are again participating in gathering gifts for disadvantaged children in Kenosha, including children from
our parish. Any clothes or toys for ages new born to
age 18 are welcome. A tree will be up at the back of
church starting on Saturday, Nov.28. Take a card off
the tree to attach to unwrapped gifts. The last day to
bring gifts is Dec. 13. Thank you for your generosity.
