In March 1863 he organised a march in Skibbereen town in support of a Polish uprising against Russia and “over 6,000 people thronged the streets carrying Polish banners with torches blazing”. Despite threats from the ‘peelers’ he outwitted the local magistrate and gave a fiery speech to the crowd in support of the freedom of all small nations. Tonight we try to recreate that march and go back to the Skibbereen of Rossa’s time. Beginning at 7pm the streets will be closed off but alive with the sounds of ponies & traps, pipe bands, pop-up historical talks and children’s games of the time. The shop windows will display photos, posters and artefacts from the period with everyone dressed in ‘period costume’. Then as darkness falls we will recreate this march with a torchlit parade through the town from The Heritage Centre to the Maid of Éireann and back to finish at The Bridge where the ghost of Rossa may appear to finish that speech! Please dress up in costume if you can (it doesn’t have to be 100% authentic) and help us to pay our respects to one of our most famous sons! Parade leaves from the Heritage Centre at 9.30pm 6 OUTDOOR THEATRE 7 THEATRE OUTDOOR Historical walk of Lough Hyne with Terri Kearney Saturday 25th July . 12PM Meet at base of Knockomagh Hill . FREE A different perspective of Lough Hyne will be given by local historian Terri Kearney as she takes walkers on her daily trail around the lough. Peeling off the layers of history, she will share some of what she has learnt about the landscape and people of the lough over the years. WORKSHOP THEATRE Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp For Kids Saturday 25th July . 12PM Scout Hall . ¤10 Liz Clark, a professional singer/songwriter from the US and founder of ‘All Girl Band-Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp For Girls’ will be hosting a fun-filled, 2 hour workshop for kids ages 8-14. The workshop will encompass performance, singing, percussion, guitar, and piano with popular music. The workshop will end with a performance for friends and family. 8 SPOKEN THEATRE WORD Artists’ Books Talk with Jamie Murphy from the Salvage Press and Book Artist Andi McGarry Saturday 25th July . 12PM Old Print Room, Southern Star . ¤6 Join us for an illuminating and entertaining discussion from two very different practitioners in the Art of Artists’ Books; Typographic Designer and Letterpress Printer Jamie Murphy and Book Artist Andi McGarry. “Did you know that the terms ‘out of sorts, ‘a dab hand’ and ‘watch your ps and qs’ originate with letterpress printing? Or that you can make ink from coal retrieved from the floor of the Atlantic ocean? Did you know that a hornet lives in a honeycomb structure, and that it’s a rather difficult shape to achieve typographically? This talk will open up the world of finely printed books while being both accessible and educational.” Jamie Murphy Andi McGarry says “My responses are distilled, not thickly applied, instead - essences are used. Rawness, directness implied and applied. Spontaneity: infusing personal experiences, lifting from journals, note books, sketchbooks, scribblings, rantings, ravings, poetics, comings, goings, ramblings, but always only so much and no more. Leaping across chasms, camcorders, cameras, computers, song smithing, electric guitaring, filming and painting. The things described are things that excite me, things I find inspiring, these are things I’ve recognised as I sped through life.” 9 THEATRE ART Strange Attractor Saturday 25th July . 12PM-3PM Abbeystrewry Church . FREE Strange Attractor is a dynamic multi-dimensional series of collaborative ventures between five artists, Anthony Kelly, Danny McCarthy, Irene Murphy, Mick O’Shea and David Stalling and guests exploring sound-based cross-disciplinary relationships to create non-verbal communication. Strange Attractor, began in November 2010, with a highly successful series of monthly four-hour durational sound performances, within the Crawford Art Gallery spaces inviting international guests including David Toop & Mary Nunan, Stephen Vitiello, Alessandro Bosetti and Rhodri Davies. The performances have attracted large audiences who have experienced, along with the artists, the developing relationships between sound, visual art, music and choreography. The quiet atmosphere of Abbeystrewry is the perfect site to listen to this unique performance. Feel free to drop in for 5, 30, 90 minutes or the full three hours. 10 THEATRE FILM Ó Pheann an Phiarsaigh Saturday 25th July . 2PM Skibbereen Town Hall . ¤6 Directed by Alan Gilsenan | 2010 | 52mins A provocative, compelling and highly visual film-poem by Alan Gilsenan, ‘Ó Pheann an Phiarsaigh’ is a strange and darkly contemporary re-imagining of national icon Patrick Pearse. The film explores Pearse’s inner world in a contemporary setting through his own artistic writings. This powerful bi-lingual film also tries to reflect on the impact of its potent mythology on Ireland’s collective national unconscious. “The aim of the film was to be neither didactic nor conclusive, but to approach Patrick Pearse’s remarkable life and work solely from an artistic perspective and explore the emotional impact that he has had on our society.” Alan Gilsenan 11 SPOKEN WORD An Audience with Liz Nugent Saturday 25th July . 4PM The Time Traveller’s Fine Art Gallery, 44 Bridge St . ¤8 Liz Nugent, author of ‘Unravelling Oliver’ is interviewed by local poet Aifric McGlinchey. Liz Nugent is an award-winning writer of radio and TV drama and has written short stories for children and adults. In early 2014 her first novel, ‘Unravelling Oliver’, was published to great critical and popular acclaim and went straight to the top of the Bestsellers List. In November, it won the Crime Novel of the Year at the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards. The television rights have recently been acquired by ITV Drama. Liz is delighted to come back to Skibbereen where she spent every childhood summer at her Granny’s house. Liz will be happy to sign books after the event. 12 ART Official Launch of the Festival Art Trail by Robert Ballagh Saturday 25th July . 6.30PM Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St . JeanMarie Straub and Danièle Huillet made over two dozen films between 1963 and 2006. They have been described as the greatest of unknown film-makers and their works are rarely available. The Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to screen ‘Une Visite au Louvre’ as part of this year’s festival. This film consists of a series of long shots on a selection of paintings hanging in The Louvre coupled with a vibrant text attributed to Cézanne and put into writing by the poet Joachim Gasquet. Cézanne writes: “A picture doesn’t represent anything, it doesn’t need to represent anything in the first place but the colours . . . you have to see it with your eyes, do you understand? That’s all the painter wanted. His psychology is the way he makes two colours meet. That’s where his emotion is. That’s his personal history, his truth, his depth. For he’s a painter, you see, not a poet or a philosopher!”. 31 Wednesday 29th July . 8PM Canon Goodman Concert Abbeystrewry Church . ¤20 Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny with Eoin and Anna Quinn In honour of the remarkable 19th century music-collector James Goodman, who was rector in Skibbereen from 1867 and who built this beautiful church which opened in 1890, we are delighted to present two giants of the Irish traditional scene, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny. Between them, Irvine and Lunny have been at the helm of legendary bands like Planxty, Sweeney’s Men, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts and Mozaik. This documentary was shot over a period of four years, from 1998 through 2002, Agnes Martin’s ninetieth year. Interviews with Martin are inter-cut with shots at work in her studio in Taos, New Mexico, with photographs and archival footage, and with images of her work from over five decades. It is a venue for Martin to speak about her work, her working methods, her life as an artist, and her views about the creative process. A recent count confirmed that between the 1st and 31st of May 2015, over 500 traditional songs were sung in Ireland that featured birds in them, as a result of this project. Tonight five of these singers have come together to perform a once-off, unique concert as part of a double-bill with West Cork’s Starling Song Project. The five singers are Tim Dennehy, Máire Ní Chéileachair, Tim Lyons, Jackie Boyce and Maurice Leyden. This is a truly unmissable event and a must-see for all lovers of song. The Starling Song Project Liz Clark with Deirdre Archbold, Christine Deady and Paula K O’Brien The Starling Song Project is a collaborative songwriting project with older people developed by Liz Clark through the Arts For Health Partnership Programme in eleven different healthcare settings across West Cork. Artists and participants share life and musical experiences, ideas and aspirations. Liz then introduces melody to the conversation and lyrics and musical compositions are formed. These songs celebrate a way of life that is disappearing, voiced by the people who experienced it. Tonight Liz is joined by three other singers on stage to bring four-part harmony and various instrumentation to these heartfelt pieces. 38 MUSIC 39 THEATRE OUTDOOR Children’s Workshop: Art and Nature walk with Sonia Caldwell Friday 31st July . 11AM + 2PM Liss Ard Estate . ¤4 per child A short walk in the beautiful grounds of Liss Ard Estate for families {suitable for toddlers and buggies} where we will explore the creative possibilities of the outdoors and learn to twist grasses, make crowns, weave, make huts, make music, explore and have fun outdoors and learn about different plants and their uses. Yeats Friday 31st July . 1PM Skibbereen Town Hall . ¤6 Directed by Alan Gilsenan | 2013 | 75mins Skibbereen Arts Festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats. “The life and work of W.B. Yeats holds a particular place in hearts and imaginations across the world. This film is a response to that vast body of work – a visual and avowedly experimental ‘film-poem’. Using solely the words of Yeats, we attempted to take the viewer on a cinematic journey into his extraordinary imagination – an unconventional biography of sorts. Yet, beyond the poet’s popular profile and his cultural tourist caché, little is really known of his complex life, despite having articulated it so completely, so creatively. In so many ways, Yeats dreamt up his life. He fashioned his own majestic screenplay and we are – endlessly – the beneficiaries.” - Alan Gilsenan. 41 THEATRE WORKSHOP Workshop: Slam Poetry with Clara Rose Thornton Friday 31st July . 3PM Time Traveller’s Fine Art Gallery, 44 Bridge St . FREE, Booking Essential The InkBlot Complex Poetry Workshop, founded in Chicago in 2004, is an intertextual presentation of verse as a force in our everyday lives, as opposed to a dry notion that students are forced to study in schools and think of as separated from their lives and reality. The interactive, multimedia workshop examines how poetry is inherent all around us, from household objects, to advertisements, to painting, to music, to our memories. Poetry is removed from its lofty academic pedestal, and people recognise how they are already poets, and that poetry lives within. Taught in Asia, North America, and Europe by the 2014-15 Dublin Slam Poetry Champion Clara Rose Thornton, who hails from Chicago, the birthplace of slam poetry. 42 SPOKEN WORD Poetry Reading by Tom French Friday 31st July . 7PM Time Traveller’s Fine Art Gallery, 44 Bridge St . ¤5 “Its central long poem, ‘Pity the Bastards’, sounded like Patrick Kavanagh and Allen Ginsberg, but its tenderness and well-made stanzas gave voice to the lives of farm labourers and hired men in a way that had hardly been seen in Irish writing.” John McAuliffe in ‘The Irish Times’ Tom French is among the best Irish poets writing today. In 2002, his debut collection, ‘Touching the Bones’, was the first Irish winner of a Forward Prize. His latest collection, ‘Midnightstown’, was published in 2014. It opens with the poet alone with his newborn son in a delivery room. Described as “a heartbreaking quality of understatement”, he confronts and stares down extreme experience and praises the everyday. An oncology diary is simultaneously dispassionate and moving. In language of calm power he registers a brother’s suicide and fraught relationships. He offers glimpses of a battle in World War I, while other poems observe saplings as they prosper and actors preparing a play. They record incidents in barbers’ shops and salvage materials from old newspapers. 43 Friday 31st July . 8.30PM James Yorkston and Alasdair Roberts Abbeystrewry Church . ¤15 James Yorkston was one of the original members of The Fence Collective, part of the Fife music scene that spawned King Creosote, KT Tunstall, Pictish Trail & The Beta Band. Since 2001 James has been signed to Domino Records (Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand), with whom he has released 8 albums proper and dozens of Eps, compilations, 7” singles and one exceptionally fine book – ‘It’s Lovely to be here - The Touring Diaries of a Scottish Gent’ James’ most recent album, The Cellardyke Recording and Wassailing Society (Autumn 2014) was produced by Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip) and featured some of his old pals - KT Tunstall and The Pictish Trail, and received tremendous reviews. He also has a very strong local connection having spent many happy summer holidays in his family’s holiday home just down the road in Creagh! Alasdair Roberts is a Scottish musician, primarily a singer, guitarist, songwriter, composer, arranger and interpreter of traditional songs and ballads. In 1996 he released his first 7” single on Will Oldham’s Palace Records imprint; since then he has gone on to produce some 13 full-length albums of music, primarily working with Drag City Records of Chicago. Alasdair has collaborated with a wide variety of fellow musicians as well as with other artists including poets, puppeteers, film-makers and painters. He has toured widely at home in Scotland and abroad – in USA, Canada, Europe, Brazil and Australia – both solo and with various bands. In 2013 he became a member of the Scottish/English folk group The Furrow Collective, along with Lucy Farrell, Rachel Newton and Emily Portman. His most recent release, simply entitled Alasdair Roberts, is a collection of ten self-written songs and was released by Drag City in early 2015. 44 MUSIC “The finest songwriter of his generation” John Peel Photo credit: Linda Jackson Photo credit: Drew Farrell 45 SPOKEN WORD Saturday 1st August. Seasons of the Year / Vremena Goda (1972, 30min) The End (1991, 8 mins) Life (1992, 7 mins) Located somewhere between documentary, fiction and essay, the films of Armenia’s Artavazd Pelechian are eloquent visual poems. As Gareth Evans, Film Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery says “While the hypnotic images are often culturally specific – whether of intrepid cosmonauts or Armenian shepherds – there’s a drive towards a universalist film language that’s closer to music.” ‘Seasons of the Year’ is a startling film that captures the complex relationship between nature and humanity in an isolated mountain community. ‘In The End’, Pelechian transforms footage from a train ride into a metaphor for the shape of a life and ‘Life’ is a poetic essay about the beginning of life. 48 FILM Immortal Stories Directed by Fergus Daly, 78 minutes Saturday 1st August . 12PM, 2PM, + 4PM Time Traveller’s Fine Art Gallery, 44 Bridge St . FREE An artist seeking inspiration for a project based on the classic Irish novel ‘Melmoth the Wanderer’ (Maturin’s unique anatomy of torture and cruelty) travels across Europe absorbing what remains of the book in the locations both of its setting and of the places associated with the writers it influenced (perhaps only ‘Ulysses’ has been a more influential Irish novel). ‘Immortal Stories’ is an exploration of those hidden zones of great cities haunted by literary ideas and characters, an examination of a contemporary attempt to connect with the past and with fiction, and a contribution to the politics of memory — an affirmation of trying to live and create according to the ideas in art in the face of pressures from the ‘real’ world. 49 THEATREWORD SPOKEN Making Sense 2 Panel Discussion on Poetry and Being Well! With Dr. Pat Bracken, Gabriel Rosenstock and Clara Rose Thornton Saturday 1st August . 4PM Liss Ard Estate . ¤5 Dr. Pat Bracken’s lecture ‘A Psychiatrist’s Reflections on Art, Surrealism, Mental Health & Recovery’ was the inspiration for last years thought-provoking panel discussion on creativity and well-being. Dr. Pat Bracken is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director of Mental Health Services in West Cork and an actor with Schull Drama Group. She lives and works in Dublin. 50 FILM Alan Lomax’s ‘The Land Where the Blues Began’ Saturday 1st August . 4PM Skibbereen Town Hall . ¤6 Free Admission with ticket to ‘Tribute to Alan Lomax concert’ Directed by Alan Lomax, John Bishop, and Worth Long | 1978 | 59mins In 1978, Alan Lomax, Worth Long, and John Bishop took cameras deep into The Land Where the Blues Began and collaborated with the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television to produce this film. “Today we give a platform to this vital folk culture and its creators. These people witnessed the birth of the blues. They lived them. This haunting music, laughing at life’s ironies, and set to a dancing beat. This amazing mix of Europe and Africa is America’s most distinctive song style. It’s also the product of the folk culture of the Mississippi Delta. We visit picnics and revivals. We meet the black pioneers who helped to carve Mississippi out of the wilderness with their work on farm, river, railroad and levee, creating a new music out of their loneliness and their deprivation. Music that, once heard, can never be forgotten.” The programme features performances by Sam Chatmon, Jack Owens & Bud Spires, Eugene Powell (Sonny Boy Nelson), Belton Sutherland, Othar Turner, Napoleon Strickland, and Joe Savage. 51 MUSIC Tribute to Alan Lomax hosted by Donal Dineen Saturday 1st August . 8PM Abbeystrewry Church . ¤20 “Without Lomax it is possible there would have been no Blues explosion, no R&B movement, no Beatles and no Stones and no Velvet Underground”, Brian Eno. Alan Lomax was the world’s greatest song collector. He was proudest of his driving, his thousands of miles and days down nameless roads seeking out the jewels of the human spirit. He is most famous for his work in the penitentiaries, plantations, and lonely farms of the Mississippi Delta, where he returned no less than seven times between 1933 and 1985 to listen, observe, fraternise, and record night after night, year after year; but he repeated this feat with astounding results in hundreds of obscure places in the U.S.A., the Caribbean, Europe, and North Africa. Tonight, to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, Skibbereen Arts Festival and our host Donal Dineen will celebrate his immense legacy - in the company of singers and musicians David Kitt, Cian Nugent, James Yorkston, Alasdair Roberts, Liz Clarke and Eibhlís Ní Chronín. 52 David Kitt is one of Ireland’s best loved singers. Having spent the last year touring with David Gray, the Dubliner is embarking on a nationwide tour but tonight will perform some of his favourite songs from the Lomax collection. Cian Nugent is one of the most exciting musicians and composers in Ireland today. ‘Pitchfork’ described his compositions as rising “steadily and delicately to glorious but restrained crescendos.” Eibhlís Ní Chronín from Baile Bhuirne is one of our greatest traditional singers and a granddaughter of the great Bess Cronin who Lomax recorded on his Irish visit in 1951. Liz Clark is a West Cork-based singer/songwriter from Colorado. She tours extensively and has recorded 4 solo studio albums of melodic folk songs. Fresh from their Skibbereen Arts Festival double bill Alasdair Roberts and James Yorkston will both showcase some of the great Scottish folk songs from the Lomax collection. Kerryman Donal Dineen is one of the most respected figures in Irish music today. As a Radio Presenter, Photographer, DJ and Filmmaker he has been at the forefront of the Irish music scene for over 20 years and is the perfect host for this very special tribute to a very special man. 53 THEATREWORD SPOKEN Workshop: Haiku with Gabriel Rosenstock Sunday 2st August . 11AM Liss Ard Estate (Assemble at Reception) . ¤8 “Haiku is an ardent, inspired and inspiring engagement with everyday life, an intercourse with nature-centred events, mainly, events that are happening around us all the time but which we perceive more keenly on the haiku path. Read true haiku with reverence, write true haiku – do it right and you can disappear, happily, now — and over and over again in the course of your life. “ ‘Haiku, and the Art of Disappearing’ | Gabriel Rosenstock Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to welcome celebrated poet and Haikuist Gabriel Rosenstock for this Haiku workshop where Gabriel will lead participants on a Ginko, a compositional stroll through the grounds of the beautiful Liss Ard estate. This workshop is suitable for both experienced poets and beginners. Gabriel is a poet, playwright, haikuist, essayist and author/translator of over 180 books, mostly in Irish. He has written two books on haiku as a way of life, ‘Haiku Enlightenment’ and ‘Haiku, the Gentle Art of Disappearing’ both published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. He is a member of Aosdána (Irish Academy of Arts & Letters), Lineage Holder of Celtic Buddhism, former Chairman of Éigse Éireann/Poetry Ireland and member of the Board of Advisors to Poetry India. Requirements: Paper and pencil. It is recommended that the text ‘Haiku Enlightenment’ be read before the workshop. This will be sent to participants when they book the workshop or can be obtained from the Box Office during the festival. www.roghaghabriel.blogspot.ie 54 ART Visual Art From old printing rooms to walled gardens, old bottling plants to high grounds above the town, in buildings old and new, Skibbereen becomes an Art Gallery for the next two weeks with the work of over 100 artists on display. Featuring a diverse range of work by local, national and international artists, with numerous exhibitions, interventions, installations and art films taking place in permanent & pop-up galleries around the town. Enjoy! 55 Saturday 26th July - Sunday 2nd August . 10AM - 6PM Umha Aois Liss Ard Estate, Walled Garden . FREE For its twentieth anniversary, the Ireland-based experimental archaeology project Umha Aois will contribute to the Skibbereen Arts Festival by hosting an eight-day archaeology and sculpture symposium in Liss Ard Estate, Skibbereen from 26th July to 2nd August. The group of ten sculptors and crafts people will be joined by international artists, archaeologists and researchers to produce small and medium-size bronze sculpture inspired by and in response to the Early Bronze Age copper mines of Mount Gabriel and the West Cork region, and the Corten steel architecture of the new West Cork Art Centre. The work will explore the contextual and visual tension between ancient and contemporary materials, leading to the fabrication of new artwork inspired by Ireland’s rich archaeological heritage, including medieval bells, Bronze Age horns and tools. The use of the stone moulds, lost-wax process, clay moulds and charcoal pit-furnaces will give spectators and participants a fascinating insight in how ancient metalworking - carried out in Ireland for more than 4,000 years - can result in both innovative and contemporary art objects as well as high-quality historic replicas. The project is kindly funded by Cork Co. Co. Arts Office. The event is free, everyone is welcome; daily 10am to 6pm and public night casting sessions until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. We have invited Franticham from Red Fox Press in Achill Island, Andi McGarry from Wexford, Jamie Murphy from The Salvage Press in Dublin and Julius Stafford-Baker from The Happy Dragons’ Press in Essex. This exhibit offers visitors a rare opportunity to view hundreds of these amazing works under the one roof. Type & Image, Paper & Ink’: Twelve books The Salvage Press, Jamie Murphy This is the first time all twelve books produced by Jamie Murphy since 2012 will come together in one space. On display will be works from and based on seminal figures of Irish literature such as Beckett, Joyce and Swift as well as new writing from Colm Toíbín, Gerard Smyth, Michael Smith and Jessica Traynor. With a focus on typography and finely crafted image making, this exhibition will appeal to anyone who has an appreciation of the book as a beautiful object. Jamie Murphy is an award winning typographic designer and letterpress printer based in Dublin. His interests lie where contemporary graphic design meets traditional production techniques. Devoted to preserving, promoting and pursuing excellence in design, typography & letterpress printing, since 2012 he has produced his work under the imprint of The Salvage Press. His letterpress printed work is held in many of the world’s most distinguished private, institutional and academic collections. 58 Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. ART Artists’ Books Red Fox Press Franticham Francis van Maele from Belgium and Antic-Ham from South Korea make a variety of art in different media, working together under the name Franticham. After founding Red Fox Press (www.redfoxpress.com) in Luxembourg in 2000 to make, print and sell artists’ books, Francis moved to Ireland in 2002. He first met Antic-Ham at the Seoul Artist Book Fair in 2005. After meeting again in London they realised that they shared the same passions in life and work, and started to produce mail-art projects together as Franticham, later making their mail art into books. The driving force behind much of Franticham’s work is DaDaism and the later, the Fluxus movement, the most famous proponent of which is probably Yoko Ono. Pushing art beyond its traditional boundaries, both movements question art and how it should be presented, trumpeting nonsense and irrationality over reason and logic. Often termed ‘anti-art’, they frequently poke fun at the seriousness of modern art. Francis and Ham live and work at the current Red Fox Press studio in Dugort on Achill Island, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There, they make and sell their DaDa screenprints and books and Fluxus boxes (boxes filled with eclectic images and items, most of which they have been sent by other artists), as well as Polaroid works. Franticham’s work has been shown in prestigious venues all over the world, including the Library of Congress, the MoMa Library, and the New York Metropolitan Art Museum in America; the Tate and Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK; and many galleries and libraries in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Korea, Japan and elsewhere. 59 ART Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. Artists’ Books The Happy Dragons’ Press Julius Stafford-Baker The Happy Dragons’ Press is based in East Sussex and run by 85 year old Julius Stafford-Baker. Julius never worked or trained as a printer and spent his working life in the accounts department of various printing firms. He set up his press in 1969 as a small, not for profit private printing office. Over 45 years later, he still publishes several exquisite limited edition volumes of poetry a year, all printed to a very high standard on a 1904 ‘Kobold’ treadle platen press using letterpress printing methods. The Happy Dragons’ Press is a perfect example of how a small letterpress workshop with limited resources can produce work of an exceptional standard. He specialises in translations and boasts a brilliant selection of types in Greek, Arabic, Cyrillic and more. His book, ‘Other Voices of the British Isles’ (2010) just about sums up Julius’ approach and dedication to his craft. He painstakingly sought (and translated into English) poems in all the lesser languages found on the British Isles between 1840 and 1940 Cornish, Gaelic, Guernsey, Hebrew, Irish, Latin, Lincolnshire, Manx, Northumbrian, Perthshire, Romany, Shetlandic and Welsh. Hand set mostly in Monotype Bell series 341 this book featured work by with illustrations from Liz Myhill, Katrina Porteous, Liz Pottinger, Trevor Sowden and Julius’ father, Julius Stafford-Baker who was a popular cartoonist, a wood-engraver and linocut artist. www.happydragonspress.co.uk 60 Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. ART Artists’ Books Andi McGarry’s 200 Books on the Move Andi McGarry was born in Tyneside and studied Fine art at Brighton University. “I’m passionate about Artists’ Books and have been immersed in them for 30 years. My responses are distilled, not thickly applied, instead - essences are used. The things described are things that excite me, things I find inspiring, these are things I’ve recognized as I sped through life.” The Wexford Artists’ Book Collection “The collection of Artists Books is very eclectic and covers ten years of continuous collecting during the then annual artists book shows we ran in Wexford in the late nineties. There are local national and international artists represented in the collection and the works include all major food groups including stab binding, photocopied pamphlets, coptic-stich bindings, unique, photo books, flick books, journals, one of a kinds, limited editions, miniature books, and book objects. In short everything you ever wanted to know about an artists’ book - but were afraid to ask is here - to be perused first hand.” Andi McGarry 61 ART Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. Mixed Media Tales and Traces Nicola Kelly 62 Diarmuid Breen Donagh Carey Ginny Pavry Janet Murran Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. ART The Mixed Media core group who have shown together since 2013 return this year with an exhibition entitled ‘Tales and Traces’. Showing in the stimulating and challenging environment of The Old Bottling Plant and associated post industrial spaces, Diarmuid Breen, Donagh Carey, Wendy Dison, Nicola Kelly, Janet Murran and Ginny Pavry will each show new work exploring aspects of memory, history and myth. Rita O’Driscoll Invisible Lives “My work takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. This work looks at institutional abuse of children in church and state care that seems to have gone unheeded by the wider community. Endemic indifference to the suffering of children and the stripping of their identities. Indifference is a disease in itself, it creates situations were evil thrives and has allowed unimaginable cruelty. A fishing net made in Baltimore Industrial School features prominently as a metaphor for the entrapment and striping of identity.” - Rita O’Driscoll 63 ART Old Bottling Plant, Ilen St. Under Influences Melania Lynch “The pieces that make up this installation are inspired by the genius of others, as a way to honour the objects, artists, movies, landscapes and books that have influenced the most recent period of my work. In a chaotic order, as a small universe of content holding imaginary ideas and messages, perceptions and feelings, I try to create an atmosphere of subjective stories that somehow connect with the audience and their own existence. The installation uses various disciplines such as drawing, painting, ceramics, object and text.” Melania Lynch is a Chilean artist who studied visual art in Santiago, Chile. An elemental part of Lynch’s practice is her representation of metamorphosis and the real and oneiric life of imagination and memory. 64 Various Locations ART Elevation(s) Sheelagh Broderick A collaborative urban explorer research and development arts project located at and between The Rock and West Cork Arts Centre Elevation1: enLightening : Unscheduled random light experiments Elevation 2: HearHere : Wander the beautiful urban wilderness of the Rock. Ruurlo, Bocurloscheweg, 1910, 1997 shows the image of a postcard dating from the early 20th century. On a country road two men are standing near a gigantic tree. In the distance we can see a mill and the outline of a village. At first glance there is nothing that seems strange in this pastoral and picturesque tableau. But when you look closer you notice the leaves of the tree softly moving in the wind. Throughout his career, David Claerbout has investigated the conceptual impact of the passage of time through his use of video and digital photography. Specifically, he manipulates both moving and still imagery to suggest an otherworldly level of existence, something that might refer to a specific place or event, but the timeline of which is not clear, oscillating between both past and present. Claerbout’s oeuvre is characterized by a meticulous attention to production details, painstakingly created often over a period of years. Also showing: An interview with David Claerbout by Fergus Daly and Katherine Waugh conducted at his studio in Antwerp for their 2009 film essay, ‘The Art of Time’. 66 Uillinn ART Laura Gannon Silver House This exhibition comprises of a series of new works especially made for Uillinn including the première of a significant new film work ‘Silver House’, which was made on location in Goleen, West Cork in Spring 2015. This work features a collaboration with composer Susan Stenger who has incorporated the sounds of the West Cork landscape and the house where the work was filmed to create a new audio composition. ‘Silver House’ is set in the home of Eilish Lavelle who has created a unique environment, where she designed and modified her house and garden over a forty-year period. Modernist design references are transported to a rural, coastal environment to articulate a dialogue between nature and culture. Gannon has responded to the changing natural light within the gallery to create three large sculptural drawings which occupy the double height gallery wall. A nine-paneled screen sculpture demarcates the space between the film and the drawings. A white fur bench to sit on for viewing recalls Irish born designer Eileen Gray’s play with fur in minimalist settings. A series of ‘Silver House’ guided tours will take place at Uillinn during the festival. With reoccurring themes of gender, sexuality and strong female archetypes, Tara’s work is influenced by her time spent in Berlin, London, San Francisco and West Cork. With an underlying thread of feminism and more than a passing nod to gay culture, this exhibition encapsulates ‘Dancer In Residence’ Tara Brandel’s on-going interest in creating non-normative and diverse images of the body and especially the female body. Tara trained at the Laban Centre, London and with Steve Paxton, Nigel Charnick and Lloyd Newsom. She studied Integrated Dance with Axis Dance Company and Alito Alessi. She was a Co-Director of 848 Community Space, San Francisco from 2002-2004 and is currently Director of Croi Glan Dance company, based in Ballydehob. 68 Uillinn ART Other events happening at Uillinn during the festival include • SILVER HOUSE DISCOVERY BOX WORKSHOP, artist Sarah Ruttle will facilitate a workshop for families with small children on Saturday 25 July at 11.00am. ¤3 per child and under 18 months free. • ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE (Studios open to the public for people to meet with the artists, see work in progress and engage in the projects) -Studio 1 - Susan Montgomery’s project The Democratic Trolley documents the process of bricolage by and within the local community through engagement and collaboration. -Studio 2 - American artist Allen Zaruba brings his Talkinghouse project to Uillinn - a mobile, experimental platform to facilitate cultural exchange. -Studio 3 - Sheelagh Broderick’s project Urban Explorer creates a living link between the Rock, a viewing point in Skibbereen and our new arts building, Uillinn. • POEMS FROM A RESIDENCY, an exhibition of poetry by Afric McGlinchey from her residency at Uillinn • THESE TANGLED THREADS, an installation for the main stairwell, from artist Toma McCullim’s recent residency at Uillinn, where she explored cognitive difference and the world of dementia. • Launch of a new work by artist Robert Ballagh on 24 July at 7.30pm. Michael McSwiney: McSwiney portrays a world of abandoned, often threatening panoramas of land and sea. Geraldine O’Sullivan: Geraldine’s work lies within two genres, seascapes, which involve a detailed exploration of the natural world and interiors which are a retreat from logic, transforming the familiar into the strange and fantastic. Fiona Power: Working mostly in oils, Fiona’s work captures the drama or atmosphere of the transient moments of her surroundings. 71 ART 49 North St. Catherine Hammond Gallery & Sarah Walker Gallery Two of West Cork’s most prominent contemporary galleries bring a wide range of art to the festival this year. Sarah Walker, based in Castletownbere, features work by emerging artists Tempy Osborne, Andrew Whitelaw and Eimer Murphy, as well as her own paintings. Catherine Hammond, based in Glengarriff, shows work by mid-career and established artists such as Carol Hodder, John Kingerlee, Leonard Sheil, and Nuala Clarke. www.hammondgallery.com www.sarahwalkergallery.com 72 Old Credit Union, North St. ART Anna Kirsch, Sadie Mackey & Harriet Selka Anna Kirsch | Code : Code deals with the life cycle in family systems, in which people are born with their predisposition and potential to compete or to fail. The photos of authentic old children’s dresses are applied to gauze, waxed and move slightly in the air. Their transparency represents the fragility of the self where innocence will become memory. Sadie Mackey | Nestlings : This selection of new work was influenced by a recent stay at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Co. Monaghan. Always sensitive to surrounding landscape, this idyllic location presented relatively exotic stimuli with its woods, lake, drumlins and teeming wildlife. The paintings, prints and drawings occupy a liminal space between figurative and abstract, resulting in small, intimate contemplations on familiar natural phenomena. Harriet Selka | A Mistrust of Painters : “This work is concerned with re-thinking the painted portrait and valuing the genre within the contemporary art world, creating the unexpected, through the removal and remodelling of conventions in portraiture.
