The second edition of this project of urban history and culture includes an intervention at the Travessa do Marta Pinto by architects MOOV in partnership with the artist Miguel Faro, a drawing installation by André Grace Gomes at the Ermida N ª Sr ª da Conceição and a program of walks under the theme of Romanticism, the actors / performers Nelson Guerreiro and João Abel. From September to November 2012, Belém brings into existence one of the most unknown stories of our identity, giving new nuances to the eternal values of VICENTE. Vicente – urban culture project The project Vicente began in 2011 with a series of original public art installations (Jana Matejkova, Andrew Cane, John Ribeiro + Carole Purnelle & Nuno Maya), an installation at the Ermida N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição (Simeon Nelson), a Jewellery project (Alexandra Corte‐Real), the publishing of a reference publication on the Myth (José Sarmento Matos, Pedro Gadanho, Nelson Guerreiro, Mário Caeiro, Jana Matejkova, André Banha, João Ribeiro + Carole Purnelle & Nuno Maya, Simeon Nelson, Alexandra Corte‐Real) and a program of situationist walks (Nelson Guerreiro and João Abel). Researching through the wealth of the Vincentian myth, following up in 2012 to Vicente is a commitment to continuity and success of the urban and cultural concept which gave the Lisbon Ravens and the Myth of Saint Vincent new colours and contemporary meanings. The project proposes a creative and entrepreneurial of the city’s imagination, under the motto Reviewing is believing... the myth is never black and white. In 2012, the participating artists ‐ MOOV and Miguel Faro in the public space, André Graça Gomes in the former Chapel, Alexandra Corte‐Real in the Jewellery shop and Nelson Guerreiro & João Abel on the walks ‐ account for its character and ingenuity, all making art into a game of unusual transfigurations. Able to express their imagination using the most perishable and common materials, but always with a sense of scale and communication with the public, these creators will meet the principles of the Project Travessa da Ermida: showing Belém and Lisbon with a new set of eyes; while, at the same time, rising on the wings of Vicente, we catch a glimpse of utopia on the horizon. Vicente, art and city – the program This program establishes a commitment of the Project Travessa da Ermida to the identity of the city of Lisbon, and the area of Belém in particular. In a context of greater budget restraint Vicente places a bet on executive partnerships, on institutional mutual help and collaborative creation. With this in mind the investment in public art, in experimental actions that value our culture, as well as the walks, which contribute to civic education, seek to suggest original 3 VICENTE’12 strategies of innovation. The interest of the Project is not limited to the field of art and design, it expands to transverse issues that are imposing today, of the deeply touristic vocation of our capital, interdependent of the spiritual renewal that is required in times of crisis. Vicente meets with a vocation of Lisbon it never hurts to remember. Vicente 2012 is the follow up of a philosophy of original and structured programming by the Project Travessa da Ermida since 2008, which is remarkable in a context of continuous change in the cultural world in Portugal. It is this stability that, in its small scale, will achieve the target of another edition of this project which is to establish a familiarity of the public with this Vicente. All the colours, shapes, symbols, narratives and arguments, present in these Vicentes, re‐establish the renewing symbol in the collective memory (from where it had been removed). It is this commitment to continuity and success of the concept that gives the ravens of Lisbon and the Myth of Vicente new colours and contemporary meanings, as well as another function ‐ more creative and entrepreneurial – in the city’s imagination. Vicente – Folios In collaboration with the seal of the Palavrão project, a single newspaper‐magazine issue will be created that complements the previous edition (Vicente ‐ Resonances of a Myth). The guest authors are historian José Luis de Matos, artist Pedro Penilo, chronicler Pedro Malaquias, the illustration artist João Cabaço, and the artists of VICENTE '12 André Graça Gomes, MOOV, Miguel Faro, Alexandra Corte Real, Nelson Guerreiro and João Abel. The content (text and image sections, interspersed) are the object of a multifunctional packaging, making the work a mix of decorative object, display, altar and shrine. Mozart) Guia das Aves (JER) (first concert presentation), Sonata da Chiesa (JER), (première) Clapping Music (Steve Reich) Guerrero Notebook: walking brings us together A project by Nelson Guerreiro with the artistic collaboration and performative intervention by João Abel Romantic Walks (keywords) Spaziergang. Walks. Fiction. Meeting. Landscape. Surprise. Discovered intimacy. Unveiling of desire. Correspondence of the desire to commit. The secrets are to be kept. Following up on a creative collaboration project started in Vicente 2011, where I wrote a text from the experience of the place and we worked on the occupation of public space in the recreation of the situationist drift, in the form of performative walks, we reappear now, and with much taste, for Vicente 2012 project, under the form ‐ and by suggestion of Mario Caeiro – of guides and companions of the Romantic Walks, resuming the sensitivity of Schiller (1759‐1805). These walks whose script, pre‐ written by me, will explore various forms, like a mix‐appeal, of literature (in a preset text), giving physical texture to the emotions of the city, meaning a part of the city: Belém and the like. 4 VICENTE’12 A revisitation of the sensitivity of Schiller through Spaziergang (walk) around the city, can no longer be made in such a naively romantic way, but will pass this heritage of the Walk as a space of subjectivation and deepening of consciousness in the encounter with Nature and the Whole Universe. But if for the man of the Romantic the need to re‐establish as a human being would have its foundation in Nature, so as to reach its essence of freedom from the human, the true expression of feeling, of the intimate I that seeks transcendence ‐ and is our modern man’s dream not, in its greater part., the germination of the hoped individualization of the Romantic? ‐ It seems that for the contemporary man a possible new way of romantic redemption would be through the reunion no just Mother Nature, but above all with his own human nature. A kind of phenomenological reduction of what it means to be human, this, walking brings us together. In this perspective a text will come from the pen, ballpoint pen and pad of Nelson Guerreiro, where the exhaustion of that inner self and not‐fully‐accepted‐bourgeois, great grandson of Schiller, is confronted with the simplicity of listening to his own condition and nature, as opposed to an antagonistic split between life and idealization. Among the written words, witnesses of my voice that signs as Nelson Guerreiro, and the material texture of the body given to see and feel or to sense by performer João Abel, a dialogue‐ confrontation will be established: a presence of silence in space, a text unmatched by the body, a non‐perceived synchronicity between two bodies. In between, there may be a body whose action collides with the social role that is expected of it, by altering the temporal perception and through the introspection of gesture, and a voice of the dialectic between the closure of the being in his own inner self dream and the social, philosophical and eschatological response to human condition. Based on the text that goes in search of witnessing what normally can only be imagined, that is, the writer will risk his life, while the performer will challenge himself without any limits to enable both to make a journey through intimacy, hopefully through elective affinities ‐ powered by Goethe – i.e., with no calculating antecedents and with flushed innocence. We will wait and see what time will bring ... Vicente – the name Vicente is the name of the city's patron saint, whose martyred body sailed into the Tagus accompanied by two hovering ravens since Sagres. To this day, the coat of arms of Lisbon reminds us of the legend. Vicente would also have been the name of St. Anthony’s grandfather. And Vicente is the name invariably given to crows that inhabited Lisbon’s everyday life, at the entrance of taverns and grocery stores. Vicente is the name of a character in the literary project by José Sarmento de Matos, who has invented Lisbon through this figure, guiding us through the timelessly reveries of memory. Vicente is the one who wins. And now, Vicente is also the name of the project. Memory, myth, creativity, future, Vicente is the beat of unrest. 5 VICENTE’12 ©André Graça Gomes, 2012 6 VICENTE’12 André Graça Gomes Matriz Matriz is the name of the exhibition that André Gomes Grace intends to present at the Ermida da Nossa Sr.ª da Conceição in Belém. A series of charcoal drawings run across the ceiling of the nave of the chapel. The drawings are inspired by stories, facts, images, events, feelings. Matriz because it is what generates, the starting point, the first drawing. In the sacrum of the space of the Ermida, transformed into a modern 'Sistine Chapel', VICENTE’s symbols and narratives performatively come to life, depending on the look of each viewer. The chapel is transformed into a set of mirrors where the representations of the created characters dwell somewhere between the frescoes of the church of St. Francis in Assisi by Giotto and the real and illusory memories that inhabit the imagination of the artist. André Graça Gomes graduated in Painting from ESAD.cr. His first individual show was held in 2011, at the Library of FCT‐UNL in the Caparica Campus. The installation Matriz will be entirely made inside the Ermida, during a 20 day residence. 7 VICENTE’12 ©MOOV+Miguel Faro, Long Streets for Short Stories, 2010-12 8 VICENTE’12 MOOV + Miguel Faro Long Streets for Short Stories Long Streets for Short Stories is an artistic intervention where a number of accounts inhabits the public space and involves passersby along the entire length of the street, from the following phrases exhibiting a two‐way fragmented history read. Among texts, paintings, drying clothes, stencil, going appears as different from coming. VICENTE’s narrative becomes friendly in everyday life of an experimental public space, by the hand of a collective of architects‐artist (s) always surprising in a playful way of interpreting their critical role in the city. The 'high' and 'low' culture, between architecture and street art, seem woven as a vernacular 'larger than life' mise‐en‐scène. Short Stories for Long Streets was assumed from the outset as an open series. With each new presentation ‐ the piece was premiered in Tallinn, Estonia in the winter of 2008, after having been shown in Riga in 2010 ‐ the same conceptual matrix fulfils a logic of site specific appropriateness to each new context. In Belém, the Travessa do Marta Pinto has an intensely human scale and environment, which leads to the intervention acquiring a character of proximity and interaction that have not had previous presentations. MOOV (António Louro, João Calhau e José Niza) is an art and design studio based in Lisbon and active since 2003. Their non‐disciplinary approach seeks to explore new fields of activity generated by the intersection of architecture with other areas of knowledge, whether creative or technical. JER 3 Sonata da chiesa (Italian: Church sonata) is an instrumental composition dating from the Baroque period, generally consisting of four movements. More than one melody was often used, and the movements were ordered slow–fast– slow–fast with respect to tempo. The second movement was usually a fugal allegro, and the third and fourth were binary forms that sometimes resembled the sarabande and gigue. It is often mistakenly believed these sonatas were composed to be performed in religious ceremonies. While this may well have happened when voluntary music was required, they are not in the same category as, say, a requiem. Text on the historical mystery that retrieves the first decades of the beginning of Nationality in Lisbon. Between what is known and what can be deduced from reading stories and symbols that remain to this day (or however disappeared), José Luís de Matos invites us to a fascinating review of historical facts. The author is a renowned expert in the history of Lisbon and responds to the challenge launched by the first edition of VICENTE, where José Sarmento de Matos has provided the framework of a novel that lays the groundwork for the discussion of this myth for contemporaneity. Pedro Penilo Illustration. Pedro Penilo is a plastic artist dedicated to the intermediate exploitation. His works are unique cognitive challenges, forcing the viewer to seek the meaning of mysterious graphic symbols and suggested stories. To VICENTE, Penilo develops a draft of pictograms‐symbol, whose poetic basis outlines the assumptions made by José Luís de Matos (and previously José Sarmento de Matos), while pursuing a line of abstraction and graphic design that takes the tradition of the illustration to overcome it with the autonomy of conceptual art. Pedro Malaquias Chronicle‐fiction. Pedro Malaquias is the voice of ANTENA 2 who every morning of the week brings a critical reading of newspapers to thousands of listeners. His ability to romanticize the fait‐ divers while insinuating ethical questions in them, makes him the most interesting chronicle writer of our days. His distinctive voice gives a finer tone of irony to a contemporary reading of the political implications of Vicente in our collective destiny. João Cabaço Illustration. Cabaço is the author of fabulous graphic universes, surreal scenes of meetings witnessed by the viewer, overcome by the outline the drawing, the detail of the plots. Here he investigates, in successive approaches, a Lisbon lost in time, almost totally unknown and that is then mythically redrawn, one wing in historical reconstruction, the other in narrative fantasy. 12 VICENTE’12 André Graça Gomes Drawing. For the publication, Graça Gomes presents the dozens of studies prepared for accomplishing of his work in the chapel. In his work, the study is actually much more than just a preparatory drawing, since the difference between these studies in A5 format and its extensions to the human scale are minimal. More than exercise in virtuosity, it is a trip (on paper) to the conviction of the line, treating the Vincentian myth as a script for the 'film' told in the chapel of N. Sra. da Conceição. Nelson Guerreiro + João Abel Baptista Fiction. In this text, the light fiction of Nélson Guerreiro is confronted to a poetic phenomenology of a Lisbon romanticized by walks. The text reveals creation mechanisms that stem from Schiller’s Spaziergang ‐ amateur champion of naiveté and sentimentality – translating it into a choreography that emulates the essential raven‐man by João Abel. MOOV + Miguel Faro Graphical essay. One of the gifts of MOOV and Miguel Faro is to know how to understand the role of word, or graphic language in architectural design and urban art. To VICENTE, these pages are a graphical essay that explores the possibilities raised by the intervention in the Travessa do Marta Pinto, now in the 'scene' of the pages of the edition. 13 VICENTE’12 Biographies Project Travessa da Ermida This project, where Contemporary Art, Design, Author jewellery and wines cohabitate, is anchored to the “Ermida Nª Srª da Conceição” and develops around the “Enoteca de Belém” and the “Oficina de Joalharia Alexandra Corte Real”. “Project Travessa da Ermida” is an innovative cultural project, aimed at becoming a reference in the city of Lisbon, in general, and the district of Belém, in particular. With a distinct personality, this project aims at cultural and touristic promotion, as well as offering diverse and unique experiences, transversal and synergetic between the various elements that make it up: An 18th century chapel, the “Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição” which, after long years of neglect, acts as a contemporary art gallery, presenting projects with curatorship and/or involvement of an artistic production structure; The “Enoteca de Belém”, a place dedicated to experimentation and to being a meeting place for people and flavours, puts its bet on the divulgation of the national wine and gastronomic culture; The Jewellery Workshop “Alexandra Corte Real”, a space of commercialization, creation and expression, where the resident designer and coordinator, creates and exhibits modern pieces, using techniques from traditional and contemporary jewellery; The Travessa do Marta Pinto, the street is the binding axis of the project Travessa da Ermida. It will act as a contact way with the history of Belém and Lisbon, but also as an access to new experiences, taking on the true role of a street as a space of animation, encounters and passages, a symbol of daily movement. A free distribution quarterly cultural bulletin “Efeméride”, with an essay and critique perspective, with 3,500 copies issues (postal free network in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Caldas da Rainha), fundamental to the widespread divulgation of the project. 15 VICENTE’12 Eduardo Fernandes Direction and programming Funchal, 1960. After following his academic path at the Colégio Infante Dom Henrique and the Liceu do Funchal, Eduardo Fernandes obtains a graduation in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine in Porto. His academic path eventually led him to Spain where he finished his specialization and doctorate in Ophthalmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. A long time art amateur, he discovered the Ermida Nossa Senhora da Conceição on one of his many strolls around Belém, where he has been living in recent years. In 2004, he took the opportunity to become the owner, with the purpose of returning it to its former prestige, now as a venue of culture and art. He has recently acquired the space of the Enoteca de Belém and the Oficina de Joalharia and in 2008 the project Travessa da Ermida was born. Fábia Fernandes Production Manager and coordination (Nampula, 1975) Lived and worked between 1994 and 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden in the areas of Public Relations, Tourism, Hostelry, Events Production and Management. She also worked (in tourism) and lived, two seasons, in Greece, 2002 and 2003, in Rhodes and Crete. After her return to Portugal, in 2006, she embraced the restaurants “A Commenda” and “Augusto Gemelli”. She finished her Post‐ Graduation in Cultural Programming and Management at the Universidade Lusófona in the academic year of 2008/2009. In 2008, she accepted the challenge of starting and coordinating the project Travessa da Ermida as responsible for the study, planning, development and promotion of the entire project. Currently graduating in Communication Sciences at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. José Vaz Fernandes Production, Assembly and Equipments Lisbon, 1958. An architecture graduate from ESBAL (Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa) in 1983. He worked as an intern in the new urban centre of Santo André, in Santiago do Cacém. He developed his professional activity for 17 years in the Far East, in Macao, returning to Portugal in 2000. Since then he has worked in several projects throughout the country. In 2008, he integrated the team at the Project Travessa da Ermida, as a responsible for the production, exhibition assembly and equipments, as well as different spaces belonging to the project. Jewellery Shop Alexandra Corte‐Real Manager and Resident Jeweller Porto, 1967. After her graduation in Mathematics applied to computer sciences at the Sciences Faculty at the University of Porto and Mathematics at the Universidade Lusófona, she acquired the tools to undertake her journey to become a jeweller at the jewellers’ school Contacto Directo, and to date has exhibited her pieces in Portugal, as well as abroad. From an early age, she developed a taste and an inclination for jewellery. She keeps childhood memories in which she took apart and reassembled her mother’s jewels. From the beginning of her journey as a jeweller she participated in several occasions in the annual exhibitions of Contacto Directo, as well as other national and international shows – i.e. Municipal Theatre in Funchal “Madeira Bordad’a Prata” (2010); FRESS “Welcome” Laboratório #5 (2010); Museu de Serralves (2009), Ermida Nª Srª da Conceição “Linhas Paralelas” in collaboration with Eduardo Nery (2009), “Princípio” (2008); Manchester (2007); Silves (2005) Patrícia Craveiro Lopes Curatorship Assistant VICENTE 2012 Lisboa 1975. Patrícia Craveiro Lopes lives and works in Lisbon. A Sculpture and Plastic Arts Graduate from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, she also owns a Master degree in Contemporary Art and Music from Oxford Brookes University, she has been developing her career as a producer of plastic arts in various institutions such as the Saatchi Gallery and Art Angel in the United Kingdom, and several Lisbon galleries such as Art Fit and Plataforma Revólver. She has been working as a free lancer since 2008, collaborating in various independent projects supported by the Direcção Geral das Artes and the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Pedro Malaquias Pedro Malaquias is the voice of ANTENA 2 radio station who every morning of the week brings a critical reading of newspapers to thousands of listeners. His ability to romanticize the fait‐divers while insinuating ethical questions in them, makes him the most interesting chronicle writer of our days. His distinctive voice gives a finer tone of irony to a contemporary reading of the political implications of Vicente in our collective destiny. Nelson Guerreiro Teacher at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design of Caldas da Rainha in the courses of Theatre and Sound and Image. Simultaneously, he is in the process of writing his doctorate thesis on Theory, History and Practice of Theatre, in which the theme is trends and modalities of theatrical practices and contemporary performative operations. Between 2001 and 2004, he was a regular collaborator of TRANSFORMA – Associação Cultural, where he worked as a co‐editor of ArtinSite magazine. Since 2001, he turned to creation: from that movement he developed several individual projects and collaborated in various collective projects in the performance, theatre and disciplinary crossings fields, among which we may highlight a series of conferences‐performance Guerrero Notebook, the collaboration with Teatro Praga, the collective Truta, Tiago Rodrigues, among others. He integrates the team for the show A Philosophia do Gabiru (The Squoundrel's Philosophy), premiered in March 2011 at Teatro Maria Matos, directed by Martim Pedroso, as dramaturgist and co‐author of the text. In 2009, he became a member of the creative synergies platform: sindicato.biz. Lately, he formed the dj duo Galante with João Galante. Pedro Penilo Plastic artist, trainer, programmer and image and communication creator. He lived and studied in Prague, from 1988 to 1999. he obtained a masters degree in Fine Arts ‐ Mid Creation of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He was represented in group exhibitions in Prague, Budapest, Berlin, Bonn, Basel, New York, Beja, Lisbon, Almada and Famalicão. He has been a teacher in the E. S. E. of the Instituto Piaget in Almada, from 2000 to 2007. He currently lives in Lisbon. João Cabaço Born in 1976. He studied Fine Arts at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha. Edited the fanzine Notibó and participated with illustration to Mutate & Survive and to the magazines Mesinha de Cabeceira (CanibalCriCa and CriCaClássica) and Diff. Illustrated the book "O Coração das Coisas" with text by António Torrado, for Edições Asa. Worked in animation with the film "São Jorge e o Dragão" featured at Ovarvídeo 2002, Cinanima 2002 and Imago 2004 festivals. Participated with illustrations in the book 'O Binómio de Newton e a Vénus de Milo", an anthology of Poetry and Science in Portuguese Literature, for the Fundação Champalimaud in 2011. 17 VICENTE’12 João Abel Born in 1970. BA in Theatre from the School of Theatre and Cinema ‐ ESTC. He works as a professional actor and develops a parallel path of theatrical creation intertwined with video image. He began his professional career in the theatre in 2002. He also owns a degree in Applied Mathematics. In 2004/05 he worked as an assistant and actor for João Garcia Miguel. In 2010, he collaborated with Teatro O Bando. He is a member of the collective O.P.A. ‐ Organizadores Performers Associados Portugal, which organizes the monthly meeting epipiderme. He was a member of the Associação Cultural extramuros – uma associação para a cidade. Mário Caeiro Curator A Communication Designer (ESBAL), a second degree in Compared Litterary Studies and a Master degree in German Studies (FCSH‐ UNL) and a Post‐graduation in Urban Design (CPD/FBAUL/University of Barcelona), he designs and produces cultural and public space projects since 1984. Commissioner of exhibitions and creator of transdisciplinary initiatives, particularly «Retratos da Alma» [1995], «Um Cálice de Dor» [1999], «Lisboa Capital do Nada» [2001], «Luzboa Bienal Internacional da Luz» [2004 e 2006]. Since 2007, he has been a commissioner for several individual and collective exhibitions at Library of FCT‐UNL of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2008 and 2009, he was a member of the organizing committees of the «Efémero.Criação.Acontecimento» and «Politico.Criação.Valor» Conferences. In 2009, he conceived, directed and curated the SKYWAY Festival, in the Polish city of Torun, an annual initiative under his curatorhsip and artistic direction. He is a teacher at ESAD.CR since 2004. He recently was the commissioner of the exhibitions Objet Perdu at the Plataforma Revólver (2010) and Mauna at the Galeria Pedro Serrenho (2011). 18 VICENTE’12 Artists André Graça Gomes André Graça Gomes was born on June 23, 1985, in Chaves. He graduated in fine arts from the Escola De Arte e Design of Caldas da Rainha (ESAD.CR) in 2008. Since then he has been developing work in many areas of visual expression; theatrical sceneries, video, painting and drawing. The two latter being the central focus of his personal work. He has been exhibiting his work regularly since finishing his studies. At the same time works as a collaborator for Nadir Afonso. MOOV MOOV is a studio project of art and architecture based in Lisbon active since 2003. Setting off from an adisciplinary practice, it seeks constructive solutions to concrete problems and specific. It is characterized by an artistic approach, experimental and sometimes speculative, and shows a proactive attitude towards the established practices enabling the work of the studio to be synonymous to performance, urban installation, a movie or a building. António Louro (MOOV) Born in Lisbon, he owns a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of Lisbon. He was a fellow of the Erasmus program in Barcelona in 2000 and the Leonardo Da Vinci in Rotterdam (Netherlands), where he collaborated in the studio KCAP ‐ Kees Christaasen Architects and Planners. Alongside architecture, he has developed an experimental practice on public space and its occupation tactics, exploring new forms of urban organization and social interaction. Since 2003,he has developed his professional activity at the art and project studio MOOV as a founding member. He is also a visiting professor at Universidade Lusófona where he teaches the discipline Project I. José Niza (MOOV) Born in Lisbon, he completed a technical and professional training in digital arts (PRODEP Level III) and is currently preparing his final thesis for his Masters Degree in Architecture at the Universidade Lusíada in Lisbon. From 2000 to 2006, he worked as a freelancer in graphic design and web design and, in parallel, in the production of events where he took on the most diverse tasks, from driving trucks, transporting materials and artists or building sceneries, but also developed projects and created his presentations linking the conceptual and planning aspects to practice. In MOOV, he has been continuing this mode of operation in the development of the adisciplinary practice of the studio that, often, gets out of the norm and the scope of the architecture project. He has been a collaborator of MOOV since its formation and became in 2005 one of the members and founding partner of MOOV ‐ Studio Art and Design, LTD. Miguel Faro Miguel Faro works and lives in Lisbon, Portugal. He studied Engineering Physics at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Lisbon, currently attending the final year of the Bachelor Degree of Art and Multimedia (Installation and Performance branch), Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon. Working primarily with video, photography and installations, he works on identity issues. The use of his body, its image and the relationship of both with different types of states are recurrent themes. The dual is an almost universal element in his work that often arises from combining autobiographical operations joining together in a non‐scientific way models taken from quantum mechanics and the practice of skateboarding to explore relationships between the body, its image and different types of spaces (physical, social, emotional and / or psychological). 19 VICENTE’12 Opening Concert José Eduardo Rocha (JER) Composer, musician, artist, director and teacher, born in Lisbon in 1961. Studied Painting at Lisbon Fine Arts Faculty, Composition at Lisbon Music School, Musical Sciences at New University of Lisbon, and Theatre at Alcalá University, Madrid, where he obtained a post‐graduation in 2008. In 1990, founded the Ensemble JER – Lisbon Plastics, a group established to interpret a repertoire of toy instruments, instrumental music and musical theatre, which made more than 200 shows in Portugal, Spain and Germany. As a composer, is an author of opera, musical theater, instrumental music and music for theater and cinema. In 1992, he was awarded with the Theatre of the Decade Prize. He participated in several music, theater and cinema festivals, and in international biennials and expositions (Expo Lisbon'98, Expo Hannover'2000). Ensemble JER – Os Plásticos de Lisboa Portuguese‐based group of artists‐musicians, created specifically in order to perform a repertoire of instrumental music and musical theater. It employs toy instruments, special percussions, and other instruments. It was founded and is directed by José Eduardo Rocha (JER).
