We are in a time of transition. At the end of June we said, “Farewell,” to
Father Joseph Hoang. Now we are saying, “Welcome,” to Father Khoa
Vo.
Father Joseph Hoang served well the parish of St. Bonaventure for four
years. We are grateful for his dedicated ministry to English, Spanish,
and Vietnamese-speaking parishioners. May God continue to bless
Father Joseph as he ministers to the people of St. Polycarp in Stanton.
Father Khoa Vo has arrived from the Diocese of Biloxi, Mississippi.
Please join me in welcoming him to our parish and diocese.
The Gospel today is the Parable of the farmer who sows seed in various
locations. He doesn’t limit the sowing to just good soil but scatters it
everywhere. Jesus wants everyone to hear the word of the kingdom even
though for some it will go in one ear and come out the other. We are
called to hear the word of the kingdom and understand it. Don’t just
hear the Word of God, act on it. Share the Word with those around you
through love and compassion. Treat people with respect and share with
them the peace of Christ. Then you will bear fruit and yield a hundred
or sixty or thirtyfold.
“ORPHAN CHILDREN OF INDIA”
Mission Co-op July 16-17
The Orphan Children of India project was started in 2010 with
the goal of establishing an orphanage where poor and orphan
children can be taken care of. According to the World Health
Organization and United Nations there are over 40 million
children on the streets of India who are homeless, poor and
orphans. Through this project, we hope to help at least a few
hundred children and save them from the streets where they are subjected to physical,
mental and sexual abuses. We are still in the initial phase of the project and need your
help to make it a reality. Thank you for all your support and help. God bless you.

RECYCLE THIS WEEKEND
Due to the parking lot repair project, recycling has been rescheduled for
July 9-10. Bring your newspapers, aluminum cans, CRV glass and plastic
bottles (NO caps), to the bin in the parking lot. Recycling opens Saturday 10:00 a.m.
and Sunday 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. both days. Please do not leave recyclable
items when the bin is not present. Proceeds benefit our sister parish in Urraco Pueblo,
Honduras.

A Word from Fr. Khoa
My name is Khoa Vo. I was born in
Dong Thap, Vietnam on March 15,
1982. I immigrated to Allentown,
Pennsylvania in 1993. In 1999 I
graduated from Dieruff High School.
Immediately after high school, I felt
that God was calling me to become
a priest, and I entered the seminary
in Philadelphia. In 2003, I received
a Bachelor of Arts degree from
St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
In 2007, I received a Masters of
Divinity from Notre Dame Seminary
in New Orleans. On June 9, 2007,
I was ordained by Bishop Thomas
J. Rodi (now Archbishop of Mobile,
Alabama) for the Diocese of Biloxi,
Mississippi. My first assignment
was parochial vicar at the Cathedral
of the Nativity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. Two years later, I was
assigned to St. Paul Church in Pass
Christian, MS. After that, I was
assigned to St. James in Gulfport
for 18 months. Because my parents
moved to Orange County, I asked
to be transferred here. Please pray
for me to serve the people of God
in the Diocese of Orange.

Saint
Bonaventure
was
born Giovanni di Fidanza in
Bagnoregio, Italy, around 1217.
He is known as the successor
to St. Francis of Assisi and
the second founder of the
Franciscan order. Very little is
known about his youth other
than at one time he became very
ill and attributed his recovery to
the intercession of St. Francis of
Assisi.

apostolic charity,
that my soul may ever languish and
melt with entire love and
longing for Thee,
may yearn for Thee and for thy

He received his schooling at the
friary in Bagnoregio and then
went to Paris, France around
1234, where he received an MA
from the University of Paris.
During this time he wrote many
theological texts and earned
another masters and doctorate
in theology. In 1243 he joined the
Franciscan Order, which gave
him the name Bonaventure.
Bonaventure’s theological texts
reveal a deep understanding
of Scripture and of the Fathers
of the Early Church. He was
regarded as an eloquent
preacher and considered by all
who knew him to be a holy, wise
and compassionate man. In 1257
he was named Minister General
of the Franciscan Order. There
was much discord in the order
at the time and Bonaventure is
credited with preserving unity
among the Franciscans and
reforming the order in the spirit
of St. Francis.
He died at the Second Council
of Lyons on July 15, 1274, was
canonized in 1482 and declared
a Doctor of the Church in 1588.

THE EUCHARIST: Source and Summit of Christian Faith
The Eucharistic Education and Adoration Ministry is again offering a
12-week program on the Eucharist. Each Wednesday we will gather
in the church at 6:45 p.m. for Rosary and Benediction. Sessions will
be held afterward in the parish center from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER MINISTRY
Not everyone can or should live as a hermit, but no Christian can do without an inner
hermitage where God can be encountered. The hermitage is a place apart, a desert
where a person comes face-to-face with his true self, and in that meeting discovers
God. It is a place of silence, of fear and fascination, of anguish and grace. Come and
join us to contemplate the Scriptures through the practice of Lectio Divina. We meet
every Tuesday (except the First Tuesday) from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at designated venues
(see bulletin). Let the desire to be with God goad you as often and intensely as it may.
The trail you are following has no end except in God. Be generous. The Master himself

HOPE OFFICE: Food Drive
Even with the economy starting to show improvement, there continues to be an incredible
need within our community to assist those less fortunate.
In 2010, HOPE assisted 18,900 individuals up another 10% from 2009. As you have
heard through the media, low inventories are still being seen at our local Food Banks
where HOPE purchases food for distribution. In order to continue assisting those in
need, during the month of July baskets normally used to collect holiday food donations
will be placed at the doors of the church.
As you do your weekly grocery shopping, we are asking that you please purchase nonperishable food items. Some suggestions include tuna, soups, meal-in-a-can, canned
fruit, canned vegetables, cereal, rice, and macaroni and cheese. Thank you for your
support! God bless you.
HOPE OFFICE: Help Needed
The HOPE Office is an all-volunteer program which assists those in need within our
community. We are in need of HELP and are looking for people willing to give of their time
and make some new friends along the way. We need help with the following positions:
• Pick up food once a week from Albertsons or Trader Joe’s, usually about two hours.
Volunteer must have a large car or truck.
• Work a shift in the office. There are two shifts available Monday through Friday,
10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or 12:30–3:00 p.m. Office volunteers process paperwork with
clients, fill food orders, and sort and hang clothing.
• Assist in re-stocking pantry room shelves, time varies.
• Assist with unloading food bank deliveries, time varies.
• Help pack food bags for seniors in the Brown Bag program on the 2nd and 4th
Thursdays, about one to two hours.
• On 2nd Saturdays, help supervise a clothing distribution program that runs
simultaneously with CSFP food distribution.

QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q: Is it permissible to skip the sign of peace at Mass?
A: “Among the Eastern and Western Catholic Church, the sign of peace
appears in various places during the Mass. For example, in the Byzantine
liturgy, the exchange of peace occurs after the gifts have been placed on the
altar but before the Nicene Creed and the Eucharistic Prayer. In the Roman
Mass, the sign of peace is exchanged between the Eucharistic prayer and
the breaking of the bread (after the Lord’s Prayer). Some have concluded
that this is an interruption of the flow in this section of the liturgy. Yet it might
not really be as much of an interruption as it might seem.
The location of the sign of peace in the Roman tradition is explained by its
relationship to what precedes it (the Lord’s Prayer) as well as to what follows it (the
breaking of the bread the sharing of communion). In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask the
Father to forgive us ‘as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ And in the embolism
(the prayer that is inserted between the Our Father and the breaking of the bread), the
presider prays to God, ‘Grant us peace in our day.’ It can be considered quite appropriate
to turn these prayer-sentiments into a concrete liturgical action. By greeting others with
Christ’s peace, all in the assembly can show that they are attempting reconciliation with
others and that they are willing to extend the peace that they beg God to grant to our
world.
The 2000 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) also links the exchange
of the peace to the liturgical actions that follow it (#82). Following this citation is a
reference to the words of Saint Paul reminding us of a symbolic aspect of the breaking
of the bread — that those who partake of the one loaf are made one in the Christ.
In preparation for being united through sharing the body and blood of Christ in
communion, the sign of peace is seen as a sign of love and unity, and thus as a way
to remind those assembled that the Eucharist is also a sacrament of unity. Sharing
the sign of peace with others, and receiving it as well, is an acknowledgement of
Christ’s presence in the assembled community. It is also a public acknowledgement of
Christ’s presence in our neighbor before approaching the Eucharistic table, where we
acknowledge Christ’s presence in the Eucharistic bread and wine. Both dimensions are
necessary for a well-balanced spirituality.” (continued next week) —From Q and A – The

Qualifications/Education/Certification
Ideal candidate will have earned high school diploma or
equivalent and 60 college hours. Paraprofessional Certification

document cameras, response “clickers,” iPads and iPods.
• Help student master skills assigned by the teacher.
• Distribute and collect student work and instructional materials
as directed by the teacher.
• Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial
work as assigned by the teacher.
•Collaborate with Learning Support Teachers to implement
differentiation plans.
• Assist with the supervision of students during Mass, meals,
emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
• Assist with supervision of daily routines and schedules.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Principal, the Vice Principal
improves the faith formation and teaching and learning
process within the school through planning, development, and
implementation of school improvement plans. The position is
available to start July 15, 2011.
Major Responsibilities
• Coordinate, evaluate, and improve the faith formation program
for all students, faculty, and staff in the school
• Coordinate, evaluate, and improve the instructional program
for all students in the school
• Plan monthly student assemblies, regularly scheduled allschool Masses, seasonal prayer and penance services
• Interpret, enforce, and promulgate diocesan policies and
administrative regulations
• Work with faculty to develop, revise, and evaluate curriculum
in accordance with site, diocesan, and state frameworks and
standards
• Assist principal in WCEA and WASC accreditation process
• Design the master teaching schedule and maintain school
event and facilities calendar
• Oversee and facilitate community engagement including
parent volunteers and coordination of service program
• Monitor, evaluate, document, promulgate, and implement
information in Parent/Student Handbooks
• Supervise and evaluate faculty and promote the improvement
of teacher performance through a systematic program of
religious certification and professional development.
• Supervise and evaluate Instructional Aides and plan regularly
schedule professional development for Instructional Aides
• Develop and implement a systematic teacher mentoring
program, including coordination of BTSA certification.
• Coordinate NCLB programs with Ocean View School District
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid California Administrative Credential or Master of Arts
degree in School Administration or equivalent
• Three years or more teaching experience in a Christian context
• Experience in the techniques of supervision and evaluation,
experience utilizing student data to improve student and school
performance, and mentor/assessor training preferred.
Compensation
Salary for this position is determined by candidate’s professional
experience, academic qualifications, and in accordance with
the provisions of current diocesan salary scales.

“FAMILIES FORWARD” CLOTHING DRIVE
Have your children out-grown their barely worn clothes
again? Do you wish you had somewhere to donate
those gently used clothes? Now you can, through
Families Forward's Back-to-School Clothing Drive!
Now is the perfect time to check your closets for clothing that your children no longer
need. As you sort through winter clothes to get ready for the summer, please don't throw
the old clothes away! Families Forward will be collecting gently used clothing for
children receiving assistance in our Back-to-School and Food Assistance programs. A
few guidelines:

Clothing should be appropriate for school age children and teens, grades K-12.
Clothing must be clean and in good condition — no holes, rips or stains please.
Please deliver the clothing cleaned, folded and labeled according to size and gender.

ST. FRANCIS HOME, Assisted Living
Open House, July 17 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Tour the home, meet the Franciscan Sisters and join the residents for an Ice Cream
Social by the Guild. The St. Francis Home is an assisted living home for 65 retired
women who are ambulatory. Reasonable fees. The Home provides daily Mass, common
meals, and lovely grounds. The Franciscan Sisters have served for 60 years at the
Home in Santa Ana. They hope to expand in the future to provide extended nursing care.

MATER DEI SUMMER YOUTH CAMPS
Registration is open for various youth summer sports camps for children first through
eighth grades, being held at Mater Dei High School. The camps offer skill development
and exposure to various sports in a safe, positive and fun environment. Sport specific
youth camps include football, basketball, water polo, baseball, volleyball, golf, lacrosse
and softball. Camps will be led by some of the most recognized and successful coaches

exhibit of Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America, a look at 300 years of history
