Go forward; it’s your job.” Sister Mary Clare Boland says “farewell” to Swedish, but not goodbye A 8 Sr. Mary Clare’s retirement gift was a window from her beloved chapel that was torn down in the old building. reception was held in Seattle on December 13 at the Swedish Medical Center-Cherry Hill campus to wish Sister Mary Clare Boland well as she retired from pastoral care ministry. For 17 years she was a familiar presence at the former Providence Seattle Medical Center. Typically, Sister Mary Clare rose each work day at 4 a.m., beginning her rounds at the medical center at 6 a.m. Though she planned to leave by 3:30 p.m., she often found herself visiting patients, offering comfort, solace, prayer and companionship, well into the evening. “Chaplaincy work is not easy,” she has said, but she has found it deeply satisfying. Provincial Superior/ Leadership Team Coordinator Margaret Botch offers thanks and congratulations to Sr. Mary Clare Boland for her years of faithful service. “It is one of the greatest blessings to be with people, touching that spiritual place for strength and support in their healing, their recovery, their dying. To be at their side, with their families, or to serve as family to those who are alone – this is an incredible privilege.” She especially treasures the interventions she used in her years of spiritual care. “I bless generously: the newborn with a new name and a wondrous life. Then there are the hugs and blessings for those in Behavioral Health. In Oncology and Palliative Care, we have sorrow hugs, prayer and presence as we journey together. The Rehabilitation unit is a marvel. Most often these hugs and prayers and blessings for old and young alike are thanksgivings for healings and sure discharge. “Staff, patients and families minister to me. They share the WORD, their faith stories and their coming to the Lord with new grace and a new look.” Clearly, Sister Mary Clare has loved her time at the medical center, and she’s not gone yet. While her official duties have ended, she intends to continue to be a regular presence there as a volunteer. She continues to reside at St. Joseph Residence, where she once served as superior. ● Sister Dorothy Klingele ends decades of service in Everett S ister Dorothy Klingele was recognized for her many years of service to Providence Everett Medical Center on January 29 in receptions on the Pacific and Colby campuses. This octogenarian has been serving in health care since 1953, most recently as sister representative with offices at both campuses. Before entering the religious community in 1951, Sister Dorothy had worked as a medical technologist in Yakima for several years, having earned two related bachelor’s degrees at Seattle College/University. She first came to Providence Hospital in Everett as a lab supervisor. Returning to college in Sr. Dorothy Klingele was recognized for her many years of service at an Amazing Services luncheon for employees. COO Preston Simmons applauds. She also did postdoctoral research at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, worked in medical genetics at University of Oregon Health Sciences Center and was a professor of biological sciences at Fort Wright College in Spokane. She has seen many changes in her years in Everett. She remembers when Sisters of Providence lived in a convent on one of the floors at the hospital, and she was at the facility when it merged with Everett General Hospital in 1994. Today, the medical center has a Pavilion for Women and Children and a new Providence Cancer Center. Cheri Russum, hospital spokes- woman, says of Sister Dorothy, “She is an icon here, and will be deeply missed.” Sister Dorothy has been a champion for the medical center’s midwife program, the community health clinic and the children’s center. “Sister Dorothy was our spiritual leader and a remarkable presence at Providence Everett for nearly 60 years,” says CEO Dave Brooks. “One of the things Sister Dorothy has done, along with other Sisters of Providence, is to recognize that lay leaders are going to help run the ministry.” An intensive, three-year Ministry Leadership Formation program will help to ensure that future leaders carry on the sisters’ mission. Sister Dorothy now lives at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle. ● Sr. Dorothy unveils the plaque for the new Sister Dorothy Klingele Conference Room in Human Resources. Briefs Historical exhibit in Missoula F 10 or the past year, students at Loyola Sacred Heart High School in Missoula have been working with the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula on a collaborative project. Patrice Schwenk, school librarian, says the project has involved research on the Sisters of Providence, the schools’ early founders, and the cultural contributions the Sisters made to the Missoula community. The outcome is a research narrative, a permanent, four-panel photo display, and creation of a replica of the traditional habit worn by the Sisters of Providence. The permanent exhibit will be unveiled at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 4, following a noon Mass celebrating the Sisters of Providence and their contributions. In addition to a temporary exhibit of related memorabilia and student art projects, there will be a tour of the schools and a reception at the museum. For additional information, contact Patrice at (406)549-6101. ● Knitting team raises funds S even pairs of loving hands knit this piece as a fundraiser for Providence Mount St. Vincent, Seattle, as a thank you for the help it provides to residents. Pictured are (from left) Jean Kimsey, volunteer; Rocky Rakovec, laundry; Sue Carstens, 5 Center, who thought up and organized the project; Sue Matlock, family member and volunteer; Dot Prentice, administration; Katie Bonn, Harborview; and Sr. Madeline Monica Fortier, a resident of St. Joseph Residence next door. ● SOA watchers keep vigil Another welldeserved kudo P rovidence Associate Deacon Emile Adams, Jr., was among the honorees at a gala dinner and dance in Los Angeles in November for recipients of the second annual Bishop Carl Anthony Fisher 2007 Awards. The awards, given by the Coordinating Councils and Courts, Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver, honor leadership and service to the Los Angeles Archdiocese African American Catholic community. Each award, given in November as part of Black Catholic History Month, is named after an African American who is an early pioneer in the Archdiocese. Deacon Adams received the Deacon John Gaudin Award. Congratulations, Deacon Adams! ● New councilman This group, including D eacon Jim Barrow, PA, has been elected to the Walla Walla City Council. He continues to be a county administrator in Pendleton, Ore., and serves as a deacon at St. Patrick and St. Francis parishes. He has been a Providence Associate since April 2007. Congratulations, Jim! ● members of the Sisters of Providence Peace Community, went to Columbus, GA, November 17-18 for the 2007 School of the Americas Watch. A blessing service was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Seattle, on November 12. Those raising their crosses and responding to the reading of names with “Presente” included (front left) Kay Van Stralen and (right) Sr. Helen Brennan. ● Spokane staff retreat T he Provincial Administration staff in Spokane initiated a little something different in their annual staff retreat this year. Spokane staff and Leadership Team members toured the ministries of Transitions, an intercommunity project co-sponsored by four communities of women religious. The ministries include EduCare, specialized lowcost childcare for infant to school-aged children; Miryam’s House, temporary housing with a homelike environment for women recovering from lives in crisis; Transitional Living Center (TLC), transitional housing and support services for homeless women and children; and Women’s Hearth, a safe, welcoming day center for women. ● Partners in Hope S upporters of St. Joseph Family Center gathered at The Davenport Hotel in Spokane in November for the sixth annual Partners in Hope luncheon. Academy Award winning actress and mental healthcare advocate Patty Duke was the keynote speaker. Sr. Elaine Thaden, OSF, the center’s executive director (left), presented a gift of art to the Sisters of Providence, event sponsors. It was accepted by two Leadership Team members, Sr. Annette Seubert (center) and Karen Lauby. Sr. Elizabeth Gress is seated at the table in the foreground. ● 11 Judging from the warm smiles all around, like the one on the face of Karen Lauby, provincial secretary, the day was a hit. Sister Fran Stacey works with Healing the Children to help locate medical centers and doctors in Spokane and Portland to save the lives of ailing children. ● Healing Ministry K atherine Abarca, a 4-year-old with multiple congenital heart defects, returned to her home in San Marcos Lempa, El Salvador, in January after open heart surgery through Healing the Children. Here she is embraced by a member of her host family in the United States, Edie Bourque of Tualatin, Ore. Gift baskets were prepared by the Provincial Administration staff and Leadership Team members for residents of Miryam’s House. They ended their day with fellowship and fun at a festive lunch. Moving the moving date T he date for the administrative offices of the Sisters of Providence to move to Renton, Wash., has been moved to November 2008. Provincial Administration will share a building complex and services with the System Office for Providence Health & Services at 1801 Lind Avenue SW. ●
