Heat Wave
Good-bye to the stringy
tops and wispy
pareos that could blow
away with one good
breeze. This season, the
shorts are brighter,
the hair is easier, the
swimsuits are sportier—
even the cocktail
dresses have a cool,
athletic edge. Welcome to
summer 2012: Your
rash guard is waiting.

Taking Cover
The ideal beach cover-up
should fall somewhere
between Brazilian skimpy
and muumuu modest:
It should skim your body
but not constrict it. It
should have long sleeves
but be light as gossamer.
And it should protect you
from a chill but not
necessarily a sunburn (you
still need your SPF).
TIP
HAT TRICK
Pull a wild-print silk scarf
around your head and knot
it casually in back—the
way you would if you were
living on the Riviera. Then
slide a simple (and vaguely
matching) visor on
top. Function, follow form.

Solution
We don’t ask much from
our summer shoes—
just that they last until
September. That
rules out flimsy thongs
or anything made
of raffia. We’re going
to be sliding our
newly painted toes
into a sturdier pair of
sandals. And if
those sandals come
with a bit of leglengthening platform?
Well, all the better.
Sunscreens for Every Situation
No matter how much you love the sun, the feeling isn’t mutual. We’ve gathered the best ways to stay
protected while you’re working up a sweat or lying in a hammock.
Outdoor
lunch
Outdoor exercise
(on land)
Outdoor exercise
(in/on the water)
Lounging
by the pool
On a
road trip
In the morning,
put on an antioxidantspiked sunscreen,
like Neutrogena Ultra
Sheer Liquid Daily
Sun Protection SPF 55
or Shiseido Makeup
Urban Environment OilFree UV Protector
SPF 42, then apply your
makeup as usual, says
Francesca Fusco, a New
York City dermatologist.
A mineral block, like
EltaMD SPF 47, won’t
sting eyes when
you sweat. You have
to reapply sunscreen
every two hours
(or after you sweat or
swim it off); the menthol
derivative in Banana
Boat Sport Performance
CoolZone Sunscreen
SPF 30 cools you off
while you’re at it.
“No sunscreen is truly
waterproof,” warns Fusco.
However, Coppertone
Wet’N Clear SPF 45+
adheres to both wet and
dry skin. If you plan
on spending the day in
the water (or on a
surfboard), wear a
long-sleeved rash guard
for extra coverage. “It
works as well as SPF 30
lotion,” says Fusco.
Thirty minutes before
heading outside, start
with a thorough slathering
of lotion. “Even though
it’s more laborious than
a spray, you’re creating
a solid base,” says Fusco.
L’Oréal Paris Sublime Sun
SPF 50+ is light but still
powerful. Reapply with
a water-resistant mist,
like Aveeno Hydrosport
Sunblock Spray SPF 30.
Even tinted windows let in
UV rays. Protect yourself
with a nonirritating
mineral sunscreen,
like Coola Face SPF 30
Unscented Mineral. Stash
Peter Thomas Roth
Anti-Aging Instant Mineral
SPF 45 in your glove
compartment for touchups; this powder doesn’t
degrade in a hot car
as readily as lotions do.

Practical swimsuits have all the
sex appeal of walkable heels. But
the summer’s sporty bathing suits
are artfully cut (in one piece
or two) and come in a selection of
vibrant hues and standout color
combinations. In other words, if
you wear one to the pool, there
is absolutely no chance you’ll
look like you’re on the swim team.

A Brief Word on Makeup
If you don’t already own a waterproof mascara,
get one—stat. In your beach bag, toss a longwearing bronze liner and a sheer coral balm that
you can swipe on without a mirror. If you insist
on powdering your nose, the only acceptable
compacts are packed with serious SPF and just
a hint of coverage. A full face of foundation by
the pool or at the beach? Not. Hot.

Pretty Slick
We wouldn’t let our skin bake
unprotected in the sun—why should
our hair be any different? “Oil
treatments protect hair from the
sun and salt water and make it look
sexy and cool,” says Miami-based
hairstylist Oribe. (Try Phyto Plage
Protective Beach Spray, a lightweight
oil with UV filters.) Work oil through
the hair, reapply after swimming, and
try one of these slicked-back styles
while you’re lounging.
Swept-Back Strands
This no-style style works on any
length. With a wide-tooth comb,
rake strands straight back from
the hairline to the nape of the
neck, tucking them neatly behind
your ears. “It’s such a clean,
sophisticated look,” says Oribe.
Ropy Bun
Pins will slip out of oily hair; a taut
bun stays put. Gather hair high and
tight at the crown and secure with
an elastic. Divide your ponytail
into two sections and twist them
until hair begins to coil into a bun.
Loop a second elastic around the
base to keep it in place.
Simplest Side Braid
Part your hair on the side, then
sweep it all to the opposite shoulder.
Braid loosely, stopping an inch or
two before the ends. Secure with an
elastic, or just leave free. “The oil will
probably keep it in place,” says Oribe.
“Beach hair is meant to look undone.”
TIP
CORAL FIXATION
As much as we love redorange toes and
tangerine lips, we’re finally
up to our eyes in coral.
Literally. Sweep the superbright shade on lids,
then add a little black liner
and lots of mascara.

Hang
Time
There’s something
irresistibly Bond girl about
a pair of sexy, chunky
metal-and-stone earrings
worn with an athletic
top. It’s a look that says
you could steal the nuclear
codes from a Russian
submarine—and make it
back in time for cocktail
hour on your yacht. Just
keep the rest of your
accessories to a minimum.
The Dark Side
Self-tanners, like bikinis, are not one-size-fits-all. So unless you actually enjoy streaking in public,
preserve your skin (and pride) with our top faux-bronzing picks.
FOR YOUR FACE:
Kate Somerville 360˚ Face
Self Tanning Pads
Swirl the pad over your
forehead, cheekbones,
the bridge of your nose,
and your chin—then
blend outward. “Don’t
forget the hairline,” says
spray tanner Anna
Stankiewicz. “Otherwise
you’ll look like you didn’t
blend your foundation.”
FOR FAIR SKIN:
Supergoop Gradual
Self-Tanning Sunscreen
Mousse SPF 20
“With lotions, you have to
keep rubbing and
rubbing to avoid streaking
on pale skin,” says
Stankiewicz. “A mousse
soaks right in and
doesn’t leave dark rings
around the heels or ankles.”
TIP
FOR DARK SKIN:
St. Tropez Self Tan Dark
Bronzing Lotion
If your base is olive-toned, a
more intense formulation is
your best bet. This lotion
delivers a deep vacation-like
tan thanks to two ingredients:
DHA, the self-tanning
staple, and allo-melanin, a
naturally occurring
compound that mimics the
skin’s natural pigment.
FOR INSTANT GLOW:
Dior Bronze Auto-Bronzant
Self-Tanning Oil
A drizzle of this dry oil gives
pasty legs an instant shot of
believable color that
develops into a golden tan
overnight. Be sure to wash
your hands well after
applying: The no-budge
bronzing agents are no joke.
THROWING SHADES
With their retro half-frames, their curvy, cat-eye corners, their
shot of lipstick red, and their essential Hitchcock heroine–ness, these
sunglasses (opposite page) have an especially chic appeal.
In Brief
It’s the natural extension (or
reduction, in fact) of spring’s brightjeans trend—summer’s bright
shorts. We’re especially partial to
ones in bold hues: They’re colorful
enough to turn heads and
short enough to keep them turned.
Banana Republic, $49.50

Calvin Klein, $49.50

Gap, $39.95

It takes guts to wear cherry red lips
when everyone else’s face is next
to naked. Here’s how to pull them off:
Use a lip stain or a glossy lip pencil,
since lipstick will slide right off in the
heat. Dab it on the center of your
mouth and...relax. No touch-ups.
“Whatever fades, fades,” says
makeup artist Molly Stern. “At the
end of the day, what you really
want is that sexy I-was-just-suckingon-a-popsicle mouth.”

TIP
PRINT RUN
No one said it would be
easy to wear prints head to
toe. It takes swagger and
the right print. That means
a snug-fitting, vertical
design in a rich shade with
a wide, low-slung belt. If
you feel like Ursula Andress,
good. If you feel like a
von Trapp in recycled
curtains, not as good.
Neutral Nails
In a season of splashy prints and
vivid colors in fashion, nude
nails feel clean and fresh. “This is
an opaque, deliberate shade,”
explains manicurist Jenna Hipp.
“Like you were wearing
foundation on your nails.” So
pick a nude that matches
your complexion, add a highgloss topcoat, and get
ready to show a little skin.

ROGER CABELLO (STILL LIFES)
A summer fragrance shouldn’t
leave you smelling splashed with
spiced rum or doused in coconut
oil. “You want to smell fresh, not
too sweet or too earthy,” says
perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Here,
three bottles that capture the
essence of warm weather (without
the Captain Morgan hangover).

TIP
NIGHT SHIFT
There is no better way to
show off a totally toned
summer body—or no better
motivator to get a totally
toned summer body—than
a one-shoulder, slit-upto-there cocktail dress with
vented cutouts. Go for
a print, not a solid, for a
sportier feel. Accessories
are entirely optional.
