Receiver flat from Ohio Rapd Fire. http://rapidfire.targetweb.net/cgib...m=on&ppinc=big
I can't show as much of the progress as I would like, but it's pretty straight
forward.

I started by locating a solid bar of steel that was the same size as the upper part
of the receiver. I welded the bar to the flat so I could put all of my weight into
the bending and not have to worry about anything moving. I then welded a plate
on the bar so I could put the rig in the vise.
Here is after the first few attemps to bend. This was tough....

It wasn't pretty. I had my doubts, and I had a rough morning to boot.

vise.

Skip a few hours of frustration topped with satisfaction...the typical annoying bolt
carrier travel surgery, stock fitting, some welding and fabrication of the block for
the fire control. And you might have something that looks like this:

Hell. Weld in the barrel and trunion, the rear sight, and do the fire control mods,
US parts, and I have got myself a G3a3.
Looking at around $600 in this one. More later-

Great bend job, looks as good as a real factory built. What size was the round
stock? How did the flat take the heat from welding? I ask because I have 2 to
bend one for a MP5 the other a G3 like yours. I have 1 SW flat and 1 marked HK
which is a little heaver then the SW with more defined punchings. The latter of
the two will be for the MP5 build over the winter. Tried you trick of baking the
cosmoline off an FAL kit I have, much easier the solvents good tip.

You earned the title "Marine" upon graduation from recruit training. It wasn't willed to you; it
isn't a gift. It is not a government subsidy. Few can claim the title; no one may take it away.

Thanks guys!
It's another world over here, back in "Home gunsmithing and Kit Building".
The bar stock I used for the upper portion of the receiver is 3/4" round, solid
steel bar.
I had no problem with the welds. They didn't make holes, warp the steel or
anything. The steel is very think, and tough to bend.

I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night, and worked in a stamping plant for 2
years. So I knida had this project by the balls.....
My 220 MIG was set on medium settings all over. I didn't wear my helmet when I
did these welds because they were so small.
Yes, for the most part I weld with my eyes closed, helmet off.
Here's some close ups....remember, I have some cleaning up to do...so!

Collapsible stock????
My collapsible stock fitting and istallation was buy far the most uncoperative part
of the receiver build.
Reluctantly, I had to remove material from the arms of the stock in order to
make the fit.

The rails in the receiver do not accept the stock "out of the box", you will have to
do some fitting.
After removing material from the stock arms, with the bolt carrier installed inside
the receiver for support, I used this 7/32" block and a hammer to widen the rails,
to accept the stock.
I might add that before this, and after I had to remove a good bit of material
from the bolt as well. To say the least, it did not just "drop in". Also, I used my
CETME receiver for reference, so I was not operating blind.

It Worked
Since I was trapped in a pissing contest on another thread and couldn't sleep
anyway
Your post gave me something to do with my anger. Your right it was
easy once you get it bending, I had to keep wacking it with a rubber mallet to
keep it square through the process though. A note for you, while it welded ok I
did notice some shrinkage from the heat when I welded the sight base on, these
are full tig welds at 50amps which is kinda low. I would say some heat trap paste
or heatsink(if you can conform something to the shape for better contact)should
work. I had to reheat the area and shape it out some. All in all it took about 3
hours including throwing it in the beading cabinet for a clean up. Thanks for the
inspiration Deadline.

But, I had to remove a bit of material from the carrier; all around.
I think it's time my lazy ass went out to install the trunion/barrel.
