H ighland Hotel in the heart of Geilo is being transformed from a well-known hotel steeped in tradition to a fantastic Lodge with a strong focus on interior design. Many of the hotel rooms and the attic are being converted into 30 new freehold apartments. As an owner of an apartment at Highland Lodge, you are guaranteed that feel-good factor when you check in with the hosts. You are about to experience what we call “easy living”. The hosts, cleaning staff, waiters, caretaker, chefs, and all the others who work at Highland Lodge are looking forward to welcoming you and giving you our unbeatable “easy living” service. We will clear away the snow, perform maintenance, change light bulbs and do all those other jobs that have to be done in everyday life. The apartments will be sold as turnkey apartments. Each apartment will have its own storage room in the basement for sports equipment etc. The Lodge has generous parking facilities where you will have your own designated parking space, with access to all the Lodge facilities. The apartment will be cleaned before, during and after your stay. Simply arrange with the hotel when you want this done – “easy living”. We have a 24-hour reception, which will be able to meet all your needs, as a concierge. Highland Lodge will house three eateries, where you can enjoy a meal and then simply charge the bill to your apartment – “easy living”. Forgotten to buy something for breakfast? We can shop for you, or you could take a trip down to the in-house bakery. Want a newspaper? Simply nip down to reception and read it in peace and quiet with a cup of fresh coffee in our new, cosy lobby. Children have their own dedicated play area in the basement with lots of fun toys. Here they can relax in the cosy corner and watch a film, or clamber into the giant play maze, complete with slides and a ballroom. If you fancy staying indoors one day, you can treat yourself to a workout in the new fitness room, equipped with all the latest equipment, or take a swim in the pool. Or perhaps you would prefer to indulge in a spa treatment in your own private spa. If necessary, you can bring the office to the mountain, thanks to Internet throughout the Lodge. 3 Owners who wish to can rent out their apartment and earn some rental income. The hosts can find tenants for your rooms in the periods you want, and all the apartments in the lodge can be rented out. In most of the apartments, the living room part can be locked up, and the bedrooms can be rented out separately. If you’re off out skiing, simply take the lift down to our new, modern ski-in, ski-out ski room. Here you can pick up your skis, poles and boots that have spent the night on their own boot warmer. From the ski room, you have direct access outdoors, so when you come home, you can change your footwear here before going in. If you are going cross-country skiing, there is a special waxing corner in the ski room, and the trail that goes round Ustedalsvannet lake passes right by the Lodge. There is a private ski shuttle bus that will take you to the slopes. Highland Lodge is “ski in, ski out” for downhill skiing too. Book your Ski Pass in advance and it will be waiting for you when you arrive. There are trains from Bergen and Oslo five times a day. We can pick you up and drop you off at the station. Shops, trains and buses are all a short walk away. Why own a cabin that requires a lot of maintenance and hard work every time you go there? When you go to the mountains, simply relax with our “easy living” concept where we take care of all the tiresome details for you. You decide the terms yourself. Enjoy life and let us do the rest! From the restaurant, there is direct access to the hotel’s famous wine cellar, with seating for 18 people. 7 777: This lounge and Terrace is one of inland Norway’s most spectacular après-ski venues. The terrace faces south towards Mount Kikut. We serve a wide range of drinks, including beers from microbreweries, and a variety of snacks. In winter, we set up heaters on the terrace so that it can be used all year round. If you have had enough of the great outdoors, you can always relax in our stunning new lobby and bar. Mixing business with pleasure - a recipe for success! 9 Anemone Wille Våge A nemone Wille Våge has worked as an interior designer since 1989. She started out as a stylist working on editorial pieces for magazines. Today, she runs her own company and employs six interior architects and designers who work on private and commercial projects. She creates aesthetically pleasing, graceful environments that ooze comfort, luxury and individuality. Anemone has been featured in the prestigious Andrew Martin Design Awards book for five years running. Anemone’s goal is to create unique, sophisticated interiors. Highland Lodge is no exception. The goal was to accentuate the positive and exciting features from the existing building and forge closer ties to the mountain landscape in an innovative, fresh way. The interior is dominated by natural materials such as stone, wood, linen, wool and leather. In order to create an original, contemporary look, the natural materials have been combined in surprising contrasts that lend the interior a modern Lodge feel. In this way, Highland Lodge achieves a new, luxurious expression, without losing its unique style, charm and character. www.anemone.no 11 Cosy inside - and fully licensed Relax by the fireplace 13 Show apartments The floor plans of the five apartments shown on the next few pages are the show apartments we are building on the 4th floor and in the attic. Remodelling will be done as the apartments are sold. If you buy an apartment in Highland Lodge, you will be free to choose how you want to live. You can choose your own kitchen, tiles and other fittings if you wish. The Highland Lodge show apartments feature many clever, flexible solutions, some of which are illustrated here. BATH Show apartment 1 This is one of our small apartments. It can sleep four if you use a sofa bed. You can lock up the living area if you want to rent out the bedroom. The apartment comprises: an entrance hall, sitting room, kitchenette, one bedroom and bathroom. BATH BATH BATH Show apartment 2 This is one of our larger apartments with the best views. The apartment is spacious with balconies facing in three directions. With three large bedrooms, there is room for the whole family and a few extras if you want. Thanks to the flexible layout, you will be able to rent out two bedrooms even when you are at Highland Lodge. The apartment comprises: an entrance hall, three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. 15 BATH BATH Show apartment 3 We think this will be our most popular apartment due to its flexibility and features. The apartment has two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on either side of the living room and kitchen. This allows you to lock up your living area when you are not using it and rent out two bedrooms, or rent out one bedroom, if you want to use the other one yourself. When you are using the apartment yourself, the rooms function perfectly as a children’s room or guest room as they each have their own en-suite bathroom, a large bed and TV. The attic Bath 3 Bed 3 In the attic of Highland Lodge, we are building some of Geilo’s coolest penthouses. There will be seven penthouse apartments. Take the lift straight up to the top floor and see for yourself. Here you can enjoy fantastic views over much of Geilo. The apartments have balconies with good views, and most bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom. Bed 2 Bath 2 Hall Bath 1 Show apartment penthouse C A superb, new, south-facing apartment with a private balcony and views over Vestlia and Kikut. This nine-hole course is par 34. With hazards such as sand banks, ponds, heath and birch woods, this is an exciting and challenging course. At an altitude of some 800 metres above sea level, the golf ball flies up to 10 per cent farther than it does at lower altitudes. To compensate for this, the course incorporates a number of technical challenges, meaning it tests your technique more than your strength. The course is a comfortable walk, with short distances between holes. Vestlia golf course is situated in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Ustedal fjord, in prime hiking country. Fresh mountain air and stunning scenery create the perfect backdrop to a great day out. All apartment owners at Highland Lodge have unlimited access to Vestlia Golf Course for three years. Norwegian Mountain Food Centre Even the name whets your appetite, doesn’t it? The Norwegian Mountain Food Centre in Geilo town centre is run by Günther Dahler, one of the hosts at Highland Lodge. As an owner and guest at Highland Lodge, you will of course benefit from this in countless ways. Highland Lodge and the Norwegian Mountain Food Centre are business partners and work closely together. Some 60 small-scale producers supply authentic food products to the Norwegian Mountain Food Centre. The Norwegian Mountain Food Centre also collaborates with the Seafood Centre in Bergen, with Fjelberg fish & game in Bygdøy Allé in Oslo and with De Fire Store delicatessen in Oslo. For more information and bookings, go to www.norskfjellmatsenter.no 19 Highland Lodge activities Highland Lodge aims to appeal to the whole family, with a range of activities in the pool and in the playroom, but it also has so much more to offer. Besides all the activities on offer in Geilo and the surrounding areas, Highland Lodge arranges all sorts of activities and events itself. With different programmes for the various holidays, children can experience everything from a visit from Santa on Christmas Eve to an Easter egg hunt at Easter. Or how about budding magicians showing off their magic tricks in the lobby on a Saturday evening? Highland Lodge has a large garden with plenty of room for kids’ skiing in the winter, football in the summer... the possibilities are endless. We will have a dedicated activities coordinator who will keep the children happy while they are here. The activities coordinator will organise games and accompany the children on the slopes. Geilo With its unique location between two national parks, Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet, Geilo is the ideal starting point for a wide range of excursions and outdoor activities all year round. In winter, there is plenty to do in Geilo, with superb downhill slopes and a network of prepared cross-country trails. Downhill Geilo has 39 slopes and 18 ski lifts, spread over two mountains. In Geilo you can ski right down into the town centre. The slopes in Geilo are suitable for the entire family, from the nervous beginner to the seasoned expert. Geilo is a true ski-lover’s paradise, with a firm focus on children. There are several ski schools, ski rental outlets, a snow park, and much, much more. Geilo is also widely held to be one of the best places in the world for snow kiting. Nordic skiing Lose yourself in the peace and quiet of nature. The municipality of Hol has some 555 kilometres of marked, prepared crosscountry ski tracks. In addition, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has some 160 kilometres of marked trails, some of which are pre-prepared. There is a floodlit circuit starting from Geilohallen. The Ustedalsfjorden trails, which pass right by Highland Lodge, are perfect for young families, with information boards along the way telling you about the local nature and history. Trips up to the top of Hallingskarvet ought to satisfy even the most discerning and experienced skiers. Geilo has something for everyone. Each April Geilo hosts the major cross-country event Skarverennet. Geilo is not only about skiing and winter sports. If you fancy doing something else in Geilo in winter, you could take a trip to Geilo Equestrian Centre, spend the day at Trollklubben children’s park in Vestlia or enjoy a romantic sleigh ride from Highland Lodge. Contrary to what some people might think, Geilo does not close down in summer. There is plenty to do in Geilo all year round. In the summertime, Geilo offers activities such as mountain biking, the Geilolia Climbing Park for young and old, hiking on the Hallingskarvet ridge, canoeing, rafting, golf, cycling, or why not try your luck in one of the many fishing lakes in and around Geilo? See you in Geilo! www.geilo.no 21 I The history of Highland Hotel - Geilo, the plot and the name t all started back in 1959, in Minister Trygve Lie’s office, when the government decided to allow foreign capital investments. Bernard O’Connor, the owner of the Highlands Hotel in Jersey, had some capital, which, for tax purposes, he wanted to invest in Norway. His conversation with Trygve Lie led him to Geilo. Here O’Connor contacted Geilo’s legendary head of tourism Ulf Kløve. O’Connor wanted help and advice to build a first class mountain hotel. Choosing the plot. The national road Rv 7 had recently divided Sander O. Fossgård’s land in two. Sander was contacted, and a visit was quickly arranged. O’Connor liked the lower part of the plot. It would be difficult to find a more central plot. He bought the land, initially first through a gentleman’s agreement. One thing led to another. O’Connor transferred the money. Architect Einar Vaardal-Lunde from Bergen was hired. What should the hotel be called? O’Connor was uncertain. It was director Platou that came up with the idea of honouring Bernard O’Connor by calling it Highland. The name stuck. Locally, it was affectionately known as Høggland for many years. The story continues. After the first hosts left, Highland Hotel has had many different owners and hosts. In 2006, Pål G. Gundersen bought Highland Hotel. After a few years, he began toying with the idea of transforming this venerable hotel into Highland Lodge. We are now seeing the stunning results.
