Visions 2014-15 Issue 4 President’s Message It is hard to believe that the 2014-15 chapter year will be coming to a close in the next few weeks. It has been a truly wonderful year with many highlights. Lampson Community Care Ambulance Network Melissa Cox Accretive Health VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 NEO HFMA 60th Anniversary Party On behalf of the 2014-2015 Networking committee I would like to thank all of the attendees of the NEO HFMA 60th Anniversary event held on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015. Our event was held in the Club Velvet room located inside the Rocksino. With nearly 70 attendees, our evening was packed with historical memorabilia and our Historian Frank Klaus who attended spoke with several members that viewed the “Passing on the Legacy” memory table. Additionally, Frank had several hundred pictures digitalized for us, so the archives are stored for later use. Several historical pictures of the founders of NEO HFMA, and documents were framed and displayed on each table for attendees to stroll around the room and look at. A slideshow was also playing during the entire evening with historical and current pictures included. After the “kickoff” VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 speech by our President Justin Williams, Bill Emrhein took control of the next hour with four very distinguished panel guests: Richard Hogg, William Keckan, Michael Szubski, and Bob Monitello. Bill asked several questions of the panel and not only did we receive opinions on where they feel the healthcare industry is heading, we also had some funny stories told by the panelists as well. It was truly an evening filled with lots of memories and visiting with old friends and the opportunity to meet new friends too. Additionally, there was a photo booth available for all attendees to have their pictures taken together with props and instant print outs for all to take home as a memento of the event. A copy of the pictures will be sent to us from the company and will be available for our viewing pleasure. It has been suggested that the slideshow and memorabilia be available at the GHALI for all attendees to see. Thank you again to our GREAT committee members! VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 Changes to HFMA’s CHFP Certification Program HFMA’s strategic vision characterizes the current healthcare business environment as the transformation of care to achieve value. Providers, physicians, and payers are all confronted with new business challenges. The nature of the business environment and its impact on industry stakeholders supply both the demand for and elements of a new approach to the CHFP. New CHFP program features A learning program designed to build comprehensive industry understanding and sharpen business skills; Two-module structure: 1) Achieving Strategy: the Business of Healthcare 2) Operational Excellence: Healthcare Industry Stakeholder’s Business Challenges; CHFP designation earned by successful completion of both modules; Online study materials created specifically to assist in mastering the business content. Why is the certification program changing? The healthcare reform environment has caused the industry’s key stakeholders—providers, payers and physicians—to fundamentally rethink existing business models. Care transformation is business transformation. The necessary success factor for finance professionals today: Change-oriented business acumen. The existing certification program focuses narrowly on applied finance and financial reporting and does not address the business environment. CHFP Program Important Dates: April 30, 2015 - Current CHFP exam registration ends • You may register for the current CHFP exam prior to April 30. You have one year from the date of registration to schedule your exam. For example; if you register in March 2015 you will have until March 2016 to schedule your exam. Also, if you need to retake the exam, the current exam will be available to you for as long as you need (based on current registration, scheduling, and retake policy). May 1, 2015 - New CHFP program pre-registration available • Pre-registration allows interested members to email HFMA. HFMA will email members as soon as the link to purchase and more information about the new program is available. June 1, 2015 - New CHFP program registration available. CHFP Program - Transition Groups For members who are currently pursuing certification and have begun actively preparing for the exam, or have been through a chapter certification webinar series or practicum study group, HFMA encourages continuing with the current process. VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 Current CHFP candidates can choose, at no additional cost, either to continue the traditional CHFP program or to wait until June 2015 to pursue the revised certification. These options are open to those who have: Purchased the self-study course since January 2014, whether they have completed it or not. Registered and paid for the CHFP exam via Castle since February 2014 (but not yet scheduled). Registered, paid for, and scheduled the CHFP exam via Castle since February 2014 (but not yet taken). Note: Members who may have been unsuccessful and are waiting to retake the current CHFP examination are not eligible. Candidates must choose one of these options by April 30, 2015 and notify Career Services at careerservices@hfma.org. HFMA will provide the complete revised CHFP program (Modules 1 and 2) at no cost to all those who have purchased the CHFP self-study course and/or registered for the exam, as outlined above. For members interested in certification who have not yet begun preparing, HFMA encourages that they wait and use the new materials available in summer 2015 to prepare for the new CHFP. Heidi Gartland, Vice President Government & Community Relations at UH started off the day with an update on the federal and state budget situation. The federal budget deficit has ballooned in recent years related to mandatory nondiscretionary program spending including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Numerous efforts have been discussed to reduce the cost of these programs including reductions of up to 10% in medical education payments and decreased site neutral reimbursement. At the state level, a draft of the next biennial budget included a continuation of Medicaid expansion. Some modifications could include increased personal responsibility for beneficiaries such as a $20 month premium for certain income levels and possible fees for an office visit or prescription. The next speakers were Mark Leahy, General Manager for the Global Center for Health Innovation and the Cleveland Convention Center and John Paganini, Senior Manager at HIMSS Innovation Center. Mark shared the expected impact of the new facilities which is expected to exceed a $577M boost to the local economy based on 335 events currently planned with an estimated attendance of 582,000 participants. The city hosting the 2016 Republican National Convention, will be a major marketing opportunity to showcase the convention facilities, area hotels and local attractions. Such a VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 large audience is likely to generate additional bookings in subsequent years as long as attendees have an enjoyable experience. Mr. Paganini gave details of the HIMSS Innovation Center, which offers vast resources for consumers, providers and vendors in the healthcare industry. HIMSS main areas of focus are privacy and security, health business solutions, patient engagement, system interoperability and data analytics. The innovation center offers exhibitors an opportunity to showcase leading technological solutions in these areas. The afternoon session included Mary Mirabelli, Vice President, Global Healthcare Services at HP Enterprise Services sharing key factors impacting US healthcare including empowered consumers, regulatory pressure and a focus on patient experience. These pressures are creating a rapid realignment between physicians, providers and payors as aggressive goals from the Department of Health and Human Services is leading to a shift from fee-for-service to ACOs or bundled payment arrangements. Tom Ferkovic, Managing Director of Medic Management Group, LLC has spent over 25 years in the industry and has witnessed repeated cycles of history repeating itself. He compared to current ACO strategies to earlier fixed-payment efforts such as capitation. Focusing on physician practice management, he defined roles that are needed to ensure success while allowing a patient focus. A technician is vital to competes tasks and make things happen. A manager handles details, keeps score and handles crises while a leader provides vision, assesses the overall practice situation and takes calculated risks. Len Komorowski, CEO of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena was a highlight of the afternoon. He shared insight on the culture of the NBA team and the businesses run by Dan Gilbert, which are built on culture, environment and philosophy. A key philosophy is that it is not who is right but what is right. This leads to a culture where input is valued from all team members and innovation is rewarded. The group is obsessed with finding a better way to do everything and not creating exceptions or excuses in under any circumstances. Craig Anderson Sr. was the final speaker of the day and offered leadership advice gained from reading top authors on the subject. He discussed Jim Tressel and the culture he created at The Ohio State University while serving as head football coach, which focused on creating great people who would serve as great contributors to team goals. He stressed that leaders should strive to create an environment for people to become heroes rather than focusing on catching errors and things done wrong. Organizations never have and never will change – it is the people within them that change and improve. It is the responsibility of leaders to facilitate change and encourage the team throughout the process. After the presentations the attendees enjoyed networking, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres followed by two games of the Mid-American Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament. VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 University Hospitals Roadshow April 29, 2015 John Taylor, Director of Reimbursement, started the day with a discussion about the components of the Medicare Cost Report and the impact they have on Medicare reimbursement. He explained how the capital structure of the hospital impacts the cost report and Medicare reimbursement. Mr. Taylor also addressed the “good, the bad, and the ugly” of the Affordable Care Act and what we can expect to remain in place and what may change depending on upcoming legislation. Ron Dziedzicki, Chief Operating Officer at University Hospitals Case Medical Center discussed Disaster Preparedness. Mr. Dziedzicki John Taylor Director of Reimbursement brings extensive clinical and military experience to his role at UH. Ron University Hospitals explained how federal, state, and local resources are allocated in a disaster. He also discussed how UH developed their current Disaster Preparedness Plan and what we should be doing at home to be ready for disasters. Mr. Dziedzicki strongly encouraged participants to review the preparedness tips on FEMA’s website. The next speaker was Maria Kamenos, Vice President, Patient Access at University Hospitals. Ms. Kamenos described the changing healthcare market and the shift to a consumer driven market. Maria Attendees at the University Hospitals Provider Roadshow enjoyed refreshments as discussed the presenters discussed important topics in healthcare management. results of a national study on patient access metrics such as how long it takes to answer phone calls, call abandonment rates, and how far out appointments are scheduled. UH has been working on an overhaul of their patient access system and procedures and has experienced improvement in patient access metrics. Ms. Kamenos described areas where UH still needs to improve and the resources needed to meet the patient access goals. The final topic was community benefit. Deb Soblosky, Finance Director at University Hospitals discussed the reporting requirements of community benefit programs, what can be included, and what type of documentation the hospital must maintain. Joining Ms. Soblosky in the presentation on Community Benefit was Jori Mintz also of University Hospitals. Jori spoke about community needs assessments and changes in legal requirements as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Ms. Mintz also covered the requirements of the ACA in regard to collection efforts and the challenges of financial assistance policies for a large health system. Later, the manager realized he had failed to give them the $5 conference discount so he gave the bellboy 5 onedollar bills to return to the group. The bellboy returned one dollar to each of the members, but kept two for himself. So, the members paid $147 for the room, plus the $2 to the bellboy for a total of $149. Where did the extra dollar go? VISIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4: 2014-15 Answer: There is no missing dollar. In the calculation, the $2 should be subtracted from (not added to) the $147 to get $145 paid for the room. The members paid a total of $147 for the room - $145 (the $150 rate minus the $5 discount) plus the $2 to the bell boy. The difference is the $3 that was returned to the attendees.
