awareness of humanitarian work has grown. Volunteerism is putting the

light the plight of others in difficult scenarios, be it in natural disasters or
areas of conflict, and how sometimes the smallest act of kindness can bring
immense relief. In remembrance of all our fellow humanitarian workers who

TheSun Bosnia Flood
Disaster Relief Fund
F
ollowing the dreadful flood that affected more than a
million people and devastated large parts of Bosnia
in May this year, The Sun launched the Bosnia Flood
Disaster Relief Fund to raise funds from the public to aid
communities affected by the flood. A total of RM1,128,911
was successfully raised from the emergency appeal. The
funds were handed over to MERCY Malaysia and will be
used to rehabilitate and reequip two Bosnian hospitals in
the town of Doboj and Maglaj that were badly damaged by
the flood waters.
The Sun’s Managing Editor, Freddie Ng presented the mock
cheque to MERCY Malaysia‘s President, Dato’ Dr Ahmad
Faizal Mohd Perdaus at The Sun’s headquarters in Kuala
Lumpur.
This is the second time in the last six months that The Sun has contributed to MERCY Malaysia’s
disaster relief efforts, the first being Typhoon Haiyan that devastated large parts of the
Philippines late last year.
One particular organisation that contributed greatly to the relief fund was Singer Malaysia
that channeled a large percentage of the proceeds from their special sale that lasted for four
weekends to the Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund.
MERCY Malaysia is truly honoured to have received such tremendous support from all parties
who contributed to the Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund and continue to look forward to
further collaborations in the future.

Sungai Tiang Outreach Clinic
MERCY Malaysia and Pfizer jointly conducted an outreach programme in Kampung Sungai
Tiang from 15 to 17 August 2014. The three-day programme was aimed at reducing the
spread of communicable diseases and increasing the general wellbeing of the community
by raising the community’s awareness on the importance of personal healthcare and basic
hygiene practices.
The team of MERCY Malaysia and Pfizer volunteers conducted a dental clinic and held an oral
health awareness programme with the community. The oral health awareness programme
focused on encouraging the members of the community to maintain good oral hygiene
practices, which the team demonstrated through a practical tooth brushing exercise.
Volunteers from previous visits to Kampung Sungai Tiang noticed that many of the children
suffered from head lice infestation. In order to address this issue, Pfizer and MERCY Malaysia
took the opportunity to conduct a de-licing session with the children. The team helped wash
all the childrens’ hair with “Lice Clear” (head lice medication) and provided them each of
them with an extra bottle of
“Lice Clear” and a lice comb
for them to use at home.

A tribute to Yasmin Ahmad by Penangpac
T
he Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) organised a movie screening at its premise in Quay One entitled the
“World Best Movies Special”. In loving memory of one of Malaysia’s most beloved film directors, six of Yasmin Ahmad’s films
were featured as part of a special Yasmin Ahmad Tribute during the event.
The six-day free admission movie screening of Yasmin Ahmad’s films was held from 21- 27 July 2014. During the movie screening,
penangpac also held a sale of Yasmin Ahmad merchandise such as t-shirts, books and movie posters. The sales revenue collected
over the span of six days was channeled to MERCY Malaysia through the Yasmin Ahmad Children Fund.
MERCY Malaysia would thus like to thank penangpac for providing this platform to honour the late Yasmin Ahmad and for
helping to raise funds for the Yasmin Ahmad Children Fund which will enable MERCY Malaysia to continue its work amongst
children in need.

School Preparedness Programme (SPP) Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Kedah and
Kelantan
E
stablished in the year 2007, the School Preparedness Programme (SPP) has become one of MERCY Malaysia’s core Disaster Risk Reduction Projects that has since been
successfully implemented in schools across Malaysia.
The programme is designed to promote a culture of disaster preparedness and to increase the capacity of schoolteachers and students alike, to respond to natural disasters,
such as the reoccurring seasonal floods that affect many parts of Malaysia annually. As a practical hands-on programme, school students are taught simple methods through
a series of interactive activities, which will empower them to take responsibility for their own safety in the event of an emergency.
The programme is made up of two main phases:
• Phase 1: Covers topics such as School Watching, Grab Bag & Disaster Awareness
• Phase 2: DRR Explore Race – a four checkpoint race that consists of activities such as word search games, crossword puzzles, grab bag preparation and a creative disastermatching exercise. There is also an experience sharing session among the students and volunteers at the end of each activity.
MERCY Malaysia has successfully conducted SPP Phase 1 in Kuala Lumpur and SPP Phase 2 in Melaka, Kedah and Kelantan, in the month of August, covering 11 schools
and reaching 376 students in total.
