OCTOBER 2012
PT 2012
GREAT ROYAL SHOW
RESULTS FOR MAS
Term 3 in the Maitland Area School was a
whirlwind of activity that culminated in our
major event for the year – the Royal
Adelaide Show.
This year thirteen students, four goats and
two steers participated in the events and
were supported by numerous parent helpers
and MAS staff members.
Our steers Huey (the Red Poll from Kev
Graham’s stud) and Arnie (the Murray Grey
from
Stuart
Redding’s
stud)
looked
magnificent on judging day. They had been
clipped by local farmer Ashley Rowe and had
been washed, dried and brushed by our team
of students. With their special leather ‘show
halters’ and polished brass nose clips they
were sure to impress (or so we thought…).
Unfortunately the judge did not agree with
our opinion and decided that we wouldn’t be
winning any ribbons this year.
Next it was time for the goat judging and this
time, luck was on our side! Our four wethers
(Boer goats from Margaret Miller’s stud) were
looking their best as they entered the judging
ring in their respective weight classes. We
were thrilled when Billy and Lenny each
received a third place ribbon.
Other highlights of the 2012 Show included
our fantastic efforts in the Grand Parade,
despite the wet weather and our students’
participation in the steer educational and
goat judging programs. As usual our students
were a credit to themselves and Maitland
Area School.
Upon our return to school, we eagerly
checked the Internet daily for news of the
Carcase results in the steer and goat
competitions. We were delighted to discover
that Arnie our Murray Grey steer had placed
first in the Domestic Lightweight School Steer
category and overall was named Reserve
Champion Lightweight Steer Carcase.
A magnificent result for a school up against
commercial farms and enterprises!
A huge thank you to Julie Bagshaw, Sean
Carroll, Ashley Nankivell, Martin Dodd and
Perry Oliver for their support at the Show this
year and of course, thanks to the students for
their commitment to making Show Week a
great success.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Roger & Julie Adams.
Roger and Julie Adams’ two daughters Belinda
and Sallyann spent their final years of schooling
at Woodlands Church of England Grammar
School in Glenelg, Adelaide ending with
matriculation in 1984 and 1986 .
BELINDA went to Uni SA, Underdale campus
graduating in Primary Teaching and majoring in
Physical Education.
While in Adelaide Belinda maintained her
enthusiasm for hockey. Named in the Australian
U16s after competing in Darwin, Under 21 State
team, playing in two premiership teams for
Grange in A1 division and SA State Women’s
team competing in Tasmania. Belinda was
married in 1989 and was contracting teaching at
a number of schools across Adelaide.
In 1994 Emily Ruth was born in Adelaide.
At the beginning of 1997 Belinda and Emily
moved to Geranium for Belinda to take a
permanent teaching position. Here they enjoyed
being part of the small community involved in
Tidy Towns, basketball, swimming, netball and
social bowls. Belinda won the position of
Principal which she held until Emily completed
year 7 and they returned to Adelaide. At present
she is Deputy Principal at Lockleys North
Primary School. Emily is having a gap year after
matriculating in 2011, and working in a popular
eating place in Norwood.
Belinda has enjoyed travelling throughout
Australia and overseas for work and pleasure.
SALLYANN in 1987 had a fabulous year of
adventure living in Alliston, Ontario, Canada as a
Rotary Exchange student. She visited many
places including Quebec. The Rockies and
Vancouver. For her 21st in 1990 Sallyann and
Julie travelled to Canada to visit everyone.
When returning in 1988 Sallyann went to Uni SA
Magill campus and studied Junior Primary
teaching, majoring in computing. Her first year
teaching was in the country in 1991 at Tailem
Bend Primary School with a brand new
reception class. Living in Murray Bridge Sallyann
helped form a hockey club and played for the
Murray Bridge Nomads team travelling to
Adelaide each week to play.
The next 6 years were spent teaching at Murray
Bridge
Junior
Primary
school
in
reception/year1/year2 class. She undertook
many leadership positions including several
coordinator roles and culminating in a year as
Deputy Principal. Here she met her future
husband James.
In 1998 Sallyann moved to Naracoorte, teaching
Reception for two years at the South Primary
School. Here while playing hockey for
Greenbottles the team won two grand finals.
In 2000 her move to Kingston saw her become
engaged to local farmer, James Ling and in 2001
they were married on their property at Mount
Benson. Teaching in Middle Primary at Kingston
Community School until leaving in 2005 was
very rewarding. She played netball, was
involved in school activities, enjoyed the sheep
farm and the planting of a vineyard.
In 2003 Lachlan was born in Adelaide and
Mason followed in 2005.
In 2006 James returned to the Construction
Industry so the family moved to Adelaide where
James has worked as a Superintendent on
numerous sites around Adelaide. He is currently
on the New Royal Adelaide Hospital Site in the
city
After several years on leave Sallyann returned
to teaching middle primary at Glen Osmond
Primary School in a part time capacity. Both
boys attend there and all are heavily involved in
the sports offered and enjoy being actively
involved in all activities.
ROGER and JULIE have retired to the lovely
coastal town of Port Vincent.
MAITLAND MARKETS
Well, the Market has survived the cold winter
and hope for plenty of Tourists in the future.
We have had many visitors from Queensland,
who were feeling the cold.
Our jam and pickles corner has been restocked
with marmalades and sweet mustard pickle.
You will have to wait for awhile for tomato
products.
We have just secured the book written by
Stuart Moody called “Port Victoria’s Ships and
Shipwrecks” for sale at the Market. It is a
magnificent Book and well worth a look – in
soft cover or hard cover.
Our local honey “Beelicious” comes in many
different sizes and is very popular, but we can
keep up the supplies.
For any Arthritis ridden hands, we have
received lite flex knitting needles in various
sizes. Those who have tried the needles are
finding their hands are not so stiff after using
them.
Other new products are Yorke Peninsula Extra
Virgin Olive Oil produced near Barker Rocks and
Quandong (wild peach) jam with recipes to use
also from Barker Rocks.
We have a great range of jewellery come in
every month, so there is always a fresh supply,
especially necklaces and bracelets.
If you are looking for a special gift we have a
variety of decorated bottles. Also door hangers
and plenty of Maitland Souvenirs, such as
magnets, plates & mugs etc.
My thanks to all the volunteers who make the
Market a happy place to visit, have a “cuppa” or
just chat. I am amazed at the people who have
connections with the Peninsula and ask for
information – most times we can point them in
the right direction.
We are preparing for the Craft Fair on Saturday
November 24th – How the year is flying by –
perhaps I am getting old – I hope not.

Great ambulance service
needs you…
While we’re fortunate to have our own local
ambulance service at Maitland, more people
are needed to keep it running well.
Maitland has 14 active members on their team,
but to run a local 24-hour ambulance service
we need a few more.
So we’d love to see other members of the
community get involved, particularly people
who would be available during weekdays. The
more local volunteers we have, the quicker we
can respond in an emergency.
The majority of daytime work is inter-hospital
transfers and transporting patients to the Royal
Flying Doctor Service aircraft, as well as local
emergencies

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE AND
BUSINESS.
This year the W.A.B. State Conference was a
luncheon held at “Auchendorrock House” at Mt
Barker, a mixture of dignitaries attended. The
local Mayor Ann Ferguson welcomed everyone to
Mt Barker and in her speech mentioned the need
for a program for young people whose families
drive to Adelaide to work. State President Jan
Gregson welcomed V Swan from the States of
Women who launched W.A.B.’s new website as
W.A.B. is now separate from P.I.R.S.A.
Opposition Leader Isabel Redmond and Members
of Parliament Vikki Chapman, T Whestone and A.
Pederick all attended the luncheon with Adrian
Pederick Minister for Agriculture taking part in
the Open Forum.
“Bedford” representative L Marshall was
presented with a cheque for $8000 raised by
W.A.B. branches over the past year. Bank SA
representative gave their continued support to
W.A.B. and local branches.
Anthea Rice from “Autism” South Australia spoke
on children with autism of which there are over
4000 children in S.A. Schools. There are 2 respite
houses available in S.A. but State and Federal
Governments give little support to this
organisation.
Autism is W.A.B. project for the year 2012 – 13.
Over a buffet luncheon W.A.B. members from
around the State had the opportunity to meet
with old friends and catch up on the past year’s
events.
The August meeting combined with Rotary for a
dinner at the Yorke Valley Hotel. President Kay
Francis and Rotary President Clive Kelly welcomed
members and friends to hear guest speaker Les
Rochester who gave an interesting talk on being a
media reporter. He has spent time in many states
of Australia as an undercover Media Reporter
finding himself in many difficult situations.
Also he and his partner have travelled extensively
working as underwater divers visiting shipwrecks
looking for artefacts.
President Kay Francis thanked Mr Rochester and
presented him with a local wine and W.A.B. glass.
Proceeds from the evening will go to support
“Autism” W.A.B.’s project fro the year 2012/13.

Grass Seed Season
It’s that time of the year when seed heads are
ripening on many grasses. Dogs especially love
to roll in the grass and rub their faces on the
lawn, but this can have painful consequences
when the spear-shaped seed infiltrate ears,
eyes, noses, paws and many other parts of the
body. Smaller dogs and long-coated dogs are
often affected when running through tall grass,
but any dog may be at risk.
When grass seeds find their way into ears it is
painful and distressing for the dog. The dog’s
ear canal is long and angled, the ear drum can
only be visualised by a special scope, and
because of the pain involved this process can
only safely be performed under sedation or GA.
If left these seeds can perforate the ear drum
and cause secondary infections which may be
difficult to clear up. Grass seeds in eyes may
rupture the eye ball or cause deep and painful
ulcerations. Again sedation or GA is necessary
to keep your pet still and free from discomfit
whilst they are removed.
Long haired dogs should be kept short through
spring and summer, especially the feet, face
and ears, to prevent grass seeds becoming
lodged. Frequent grooming is recommended to
detect grass seeds in the coat before they have
a chance to infiltrate and cause damage.
Alternatively, lawn and weeds should be kept
short or under control in the dry months. Dogs
walking through scrub areas should be kept on
a lead – this is also beneficial as snake season
approaches!
Any pets requiring sedation or GA for any other
purpose are automatically given a thorough ear
Any pets requiring sedation or GA for any other
purpose are automatically given a thorough ear
examination whilst at our clinic, and pets
attending the clinic for routine procedures like
vaccinations have their ears scoped as part of
their check up if problems are suspected.
If your pet is shaking its head, yelping for no
apparent reason, squinting or keeping an eye
closed, licking or chewing between its toes or
sneezing repeatedly then it may well have a
grass seed lodged. As well as affecting the area
of entry these seeds can migrate to organs, and
even to the spine!
If you have any concerns about grass seeds and
their potential problems, talk to the friendly
staff at YP Vet Kadina, Maitland, Minlaton or
Moonta.

th
The AGM of the above club was held on September 17 with 17 people attending. Chris Crouch is once again
President and Shirley Loffler Secretary anyone wishing to play in next year’s tournament please contact either of
th
these ladies. We will be having an opening night on Monday 4 February 2013 in the Uniting Church Hall at 7.30pm.
More on that later.
All members agreed to give the Maitland Health Centre the proceeds of 2012 a total of $700, and the money from
2013 as well. They are planning extensions and any amount is greatly appreciated. Let’s hope more will play next
