CEO’S REPORT 2013/2014
CEO’s Report
It is with great pleasure that I prepare my third and final Waikato Chamber CEO report
understanding the In-Coming or Acting CEO will present the report on my behalf.
As the report covers 1st July 2013 until 30th June 2014 it is important for me to share our year with
you even if I will not be sharing the event with you.
It has been a year of foundation work, putting in place the structure to move forward. A solid
committed team, working together.
Some of the projects undertaken in the year include a complete review of the Westpac Waikato
Business Excellence Awards. Waikato University Management School provided three top level
496/596 students who undertook major research resulting in new categories and criteria for 2014.
The Institute of Directors (Waikato Branch) partnered with us and will be actively involved with the
judging.
We signed a generous agreement with Wintec for our premises, our lease vehicle and the IT support
we receive. Wintec’s support of the Waikato Chamber of Commerce cannot be understated. It is
such a pleasure to work closely with them in all aspects of our business and receive 100% support.
This year we partnered with Waikato Business News to produce the third Gateway magazine, the
previous two between Waikato Business News and Opportunity Hamilton. This two year coffee
table magazine focused on the many celebrations happening in the city and region in 2014. It has
been a pleasure to have been involved in celebrations. We have bought to life ‘Connections’ the
Chamber Century book from 1906- 2006 using many of the amazing photos to celebrate business
success. The Connections book will be available as an e-Book in the very future which is an excellent
outcome. The history of the Waikato Chamber and our city lives through the digital medium.
During the year we held conversations with Sue Kohn-Taylor to partner and host the Women’s
Inspiration series. Events are up and running and have been well received with almost 100 people
attending the first event.
Whilst the foundation and ground work has been put in place by the team, it has been a challenging
year financially. Cash sponsorship has been difficult to secure and our events program has only
recently been finalised.
We were fortunate Air New Zealand provided sponsorship of $6,000 in air fares and Success
Personnel $5,000 cash for marketing opportunities.
In early June we partnered with Work and Income to deliver a Skills for Industry Programme to 10
clients. This was a pilot project which I hope will continue. We appreciated the support from the
Work and Income team to assist us with the new program.
During the year we recognized the need to strengthen our advocacy role on behalf of you our
members. Life Members John Gallagher and Gail ones stepped up as members of the Advocacy SubCommittee with John agreeing to be the Chair.
Late last year we moved our office along the hall and in the process sold our fit-out to Wintec. This
resulted in a Loss of Sale of Assets to the year ended 30th June 2014 of $9,475. This transaction
impacted on our profitability, also our cashflow as the handover of assets required a GST payment of
$10,078.00.
In closing it has been a pleasure to work at the Waikato Chamber of Commerce and Industry for
almost three years. There are so many good business stories to tell, we need to keep them coming.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013/2014
President’s Report – 2013/14
On behalf of the board it is my pleasure to present my first President’s report.
In a year of change there is much to be proud of but there are also some things that we simply must
improve on.
Firstly we simply cannot hide from the fact that our financial performance is poor for the second
year running. It is unacceptable and something that we must address. Whilst shortfalls in targeted
sponsorship have impacted so has our failure to deliver on our planned activities. Going forward our
new CEO will be firmly focused on an improved performance and returning us to nominal surplus.
Change, is a constant in business and normally occurs at the least convenient time and has been a
massive feature for the Chamber this year.
CEO, Sandra's resignation in the midst of the Westpac Waikato Business awards (WWBEA) rebuild
had a huge impact on the Chamber team. I am really proud of the way they have responded and
owned all the challenges as they occurred, which given their relative short tenure, is a testament to
their professionalism. We are in the final stages of interviews for our New CEO and we hope to be in
a position to announce our appointment within the next two weeks.
Board, we have has two resignations this year Annie Monk and Mareet Carley. Annie has been on
the Board since I joined and with a change in role she was not able to commit the time required that
she felt necessary to be an effective Board member, so she has stepped down. Annie a huge thank
you for the many valuable years of service you have contributed. Mareet came onto the Board last
year and a change of role also sees her step down. Thank you Mareet for your contributions this
year.
WWBEA, Sandra touched on these in her report. The focus and energy from the team this year to get
this up and running has been nothing short of sensational. There has been a huge amount of work
undertaken that has vastly improved the awards and would not have been possible for the chamber
to have achieved all we have without the support, guidance and assistance of The University of
Waikato management School. The New Awards have enabled us to maintain relationships with past
Category Sponsors, Westpac, Deloitte, Wintec, The University of Waikato management school, and
Fieldays, plus it has also given us the opportunity to bring in new category sponsors, SKYCITY, Te
Puni Kokiri, The Porter Group and McCaw Lewis. We greatly appreciate the support we receive from
our sponsor family.
Our relationship with the IOD continues to grow through not only our involvement in training and
governance education but also in joint event hosting, marketing and development. This is clearly
evidenced in our partnership in the WWBEA as well as our recent Joint Hosting of the hugely
successful Craig's partners Bill English lunch that was attended by approximately 200 guests.
The recent introduction of the Women’s Inspiration series has also been a strong positive for the
Chamber, and future events are already tracking at capacity. These type of professional targeted
seminars will continue to be a focus and the early success of these seminars are a great credit to the
team involved.
To my board and the team at the Chamber, thank you for all your hard work and dedication
particularly in recent times where we all have had to step up and take on a bit more, I appreciate the
fact that everyone has just got on with what needs to be done.
Going forward I believe our success will rest with working closely with like minded professional
organisations in the Waikato to drive business advocacy and ensure businesses voice is heard,
understood
and
acted
upon.
