It was the seat of the Tsugaru clan – a 47,000 koku tozama daimyo clan who ruled over what is now central Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. The surrounding Hirosaki Park surrounding the castle grounds is one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing locations. Cherry blossoms are in bloom at the end of April and in the beginning of May. es t l Wo r u s Hi ro s a k i S a ku r a F iva ld mo -fa Hirosaki Park and its cherry blossoms are known as one of the best scenic spots in Japan with cherry blossoms blooming against the backdrop of blue skies, majestic mountains, and the Hirosaki Castle. Cherry blossoms from approximately 2,600 trees, including more than 300 trees that are over 100 years old, bloom in full glory in the park. The Hirosaki Sakura Festival is held from late April to early May every year. The park bustles with people enjoying rental boats, food stalls and the illumination of cherry blossoms at night. It’s another way to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms and one which cannot be seen in the day. The Aomori Nebuta Festival is held once a year. It features vivid floats shaped after famous historical and mythological Japanese characters and warriors. Unlike typical floats, the nebuta floats are 15 to 30 feet tall and made of fragile washi paper and bamboo frames. As a finishing touch, hundreds of light bulbs are weaved throughout the floats, illuminating the parade with brilliant colours. The sight is absolutely breathtaking and not to be missed!
