FOR VOTING US BEST BAZAAR FOR VOTING US BEST BAZAAR 80079123 2015 BEST OF GREATER PITTSTON The Sunday Dispatch Sunday, September 27, 2015 3 LOCAL FLAVOR PHOTOGRAPHER Bob Dellarte Bob Dellarte, owner of Golden Photo Studio on Wyoming Avenue in West Pittston, has been chosen best photographer in Greater Pittston for the fourth year in a row. “I love what I do,” Delarte said when recently asked how he felt Dellarte about the honor. “I love shooting sports and working with kids,” he added. Golden specializes in wedding photography (ceremony, reception, candid bride and groom, wedding party) and videos; formal and casual senior photos, indoor and outdoor; sports, music and dance themes; video transfers (all formats); and commercial photography. ARTIST Maria Livrone “It’s great; it’s always wonderful to be recognized for your accomplishments,” Maria Livrone said about being chosen Best of Greater Pittston in the artist category. An artist for approximately 40 years, Livrone came upon a Livrone unique fused glass technique she uses in her creations. She also mixes that technique with metal to create indoor and outdoor sculptures. Her husband Bill does the welding. The couple are owners of Art On Main in Pittston. HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER Michael Fuller Michael Fuller, voted best high school teacher in this year’s Best of Greater Pittston poll, is in his 12th year teaching ninth-grade civics and economics at Pittston Area High School. On winning, Fuller stated, “I’m very honored and grateful to have won. It’s humbling because there are so many great teachers.” Fuller, who initially pursued a different career, credits some “great former educators” for his decision to change direction. “I want to thank Mike Carroll Sr., Ned Linnen and Frank McLane, who inspired me to pursue a teaching career.” Fuller really knows when he has hit home with his students when he can “make their jaws drop” upon learning something new, such as when he recently compared the state’s prison budget to the education budget. The difference between the two was something the students did not expect. Michael Fuller teaches his ninth grade civics and economics class at Pittston Area High School. FITNESS INSTRUCTOR Shana Keeler “I’m excited and surprised to win the second year in the row,” Shana Keeler, voted best fitness instructor, said. Keeler, who co-owns Crossfit Blarney Stone with her sister Shandra, has achieved many records and honors since she began her career as a competitive swimmer about 20 years ago. Keeler qualified for the Boston Marathon three times and in 2013 completed a 50-mile ultra-marathon. She is certified and has taught indoor cycling, group fitness and shallow water fitness and holds a degree in counseling from The University of Scranton. Keeler believes a mix of psychology and athletics builds mental and physical toughness so necessary in sports and fitness. GOLF COURSE Fox Hill Country Club On June 23, 1920, a parcel of land along the West PittstonExeter border was chosen as a possible site for the proposed Fox Hill Country Club. By 1921, the nine-hole course was “ready for play.” It wasn’t long before membership outgrew the course and it was time to expand. Social memberships are available and the club has a dining hall and banquet facilities. Volunteers are the key to the success of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Bazaar in Dupont. Many hours are logged not only working the event, but preparing a variety of ethnic foods such as pierogies, sausage and peppers and haluski. But the one food item for which the wait time supersedes the term “long” are the bazaar’s famous potato pancakes. It’s widely known the church goes through two tons or more of potatoes preparing for the event. ORGANIZED EVENT Pittston Tomato Festival To say the Pittston Tomato Festival is the best of Greater Pittston’s organized events tells only half of the story. People from other parts of the country travel to this event. Main St. in Pittston, was voted best dance studio by Sunday Dispatch readers for 2015. DANCE STUDIO Spotlight Dance Studio “We are so surprised,” Mary Paglianite, owner of Spotlight Dance Studio, said about being chosen best dance studio. In business for four years, the studio recently moved to its new location 108 S. Main St. next to Sabatelli’s. Students range from 3 years old to adult. The most popular dance categories are ballet, tap and jazz hip hop, the latter being the most popular with the adult students. Boys and girls perform in two recitals at Christmas and in the spring and also belong to competition groups. Along with dance, the instructors teach Zumba and Piyo, a combination of Pilates and Yoga. Non-competitive classes in tumbling and agility are also offered and “help greatly in dance performances,” Paglianite stated. HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC COACH Kathy Healey Kathy Healey, a previous winner of the best high school athletic coach title, has been coaching girls basketball for over 38 years. A definite highlight for Healey was taking her Pittston Area team to the PIAA District 12 championships after winning its first-ever girls District 2 Class 4A championship, defeating Hazleton Area, 50-40 at Wilkes University’s Marts Center this past February. “The girls are working hard. We lost three important seniors but they hope to go for the championship again,” Healey recently stated. On winning the best coach title Healey added, “It’s incredible. I’ve been coaching for 39 years now. Owner Sam Marranca likes it that way, but when it comes to his sauce recipe, well, that’s a secret. Over the years, Marranca has credited his loyal customers for getting him through some tough times when hit by the Agnes flood and then when flooding tore through Greater Pittston again in 2011.
