Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

A Message from your Pastor
Scripture Readings
Epiphany of the Lord
January 4, 2015
My Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Feast of the
Isaiah 60: 1-6
Psalm 72
Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6
Matthew 2: 1-12
Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
This Feast takes on special significance this
year, as we prepare for the World Meeting
of Families this coming September. You
will hear a lot about family life, and the joys
and challenges that families face in this modern world, during
that historic gathering.
But one thing is for certain - the model that will be presented
for us to follow will be the example of the Holy Family. Now at
first glance, we might think, "How can we relate to this family,
when it's made up of two flawless characters and one nearly
flawless dad?"
However, it may be good for us to step back and take a second look at the many human problems they faced, similar to us.
They were, at one point, refugees and immigrants, and most
likely faced discrimination while living in Egypt. They had to
re-settle not once, but twice. Jesus ran off without telling His
parents, and they soon realized He had another Father whose
work He had to be about.
Joseph had to trust in a dream and put up with suspicions
about his wife's pregnancy. These are real human problems, and
the Holy Family had to face them just as any family does today.
But the Holy Family shows us more than anything the power
of living life grounded in the three theological virtues of faith,
hope and charity. By their faith, they knew that God keeps
His promises. Such faith provided a foundation upon which
they could have hope, despite the many obstacles that were in
their way. Their little family would make it through. Finally
and most importantly, there was charity. They depended on
each other. Mary and Joseph did extraordinary things for their
child, and as He grew in wisdom, so He understood and appreciated what His parents had done for Him.
And so what can we do as individual families and as a parish
family, to make faith more present in our homes? What are the
shared things for which we hope together? What more can we
do to show each other we care?
On this Holy Family Sunday, and on behalf of Father Kolenkiewicz, Father Loomis and Deacon Dan, I thank our parish
family for your many kindnesses shown us at Christmas, and
for the warm way you embrace us with your prayers, faith and
encouragement throughout the entire year. We pray that the
Holy Family will watch over and guide all of our families in
this coming New Year.
Some interesting details to ponder from our readings:
Isaiah mentions only gold and frankincense among the gifts
that come from all nations. It is Matthew who adds the gift of
myrrh—the symbol of the future passion and death of the
newborn Messiah. The magi must consult the revelation of
faith to find their way to Bethlehem; their own means are not
enough. As we listen to God’s word, what details strike you?
How is the Messiah revealed to you?
Remember The Deceased
John L. Smith, Mary Ann McCabe
We are united in prayer with their families and with one another as we and all the faithful departed await our rising with
the Lord.
Welcome our new Parishioners

Scripture Readings
Octave Day of Christmas
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
Vigil Mass Dec. 31: 5:30 p.m.
Masses Jan. 1: 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m.,
11 a.m., 12:30 p.m.
Numbers 6: 22-27
Psalm 67
Galatians 4: 4-7
Luke 2: 16-21
The focus on this day is indeed on blessing. Our first
reading is a beautiful blessing prayer wonderfully suited to
the beginning of the year. Saint Paul, in his Letter to the Galatians, expands on the blessing that God has given us in
Christ Jesus. And in the Gospel, Mary takes time to reflect
on her blessings in the events surrounding Jesus’ birth. As
we listen to these readings today, let us remember all God’s
blessings that we too have received.
May God Bless You,

Dear Parishioners,
The 2014 CCD Living Nativity cast did
a great job! (see pictures below). Pictures
are also displayed on the bulletin board between the church and school. Thanks to
Gary Gehringer for the wonderful photos.
Let us keep each other in prayer.
e would like to wish all the members of the Adoration
Society and their families a very blessed Christmas and a happy
and healthy New Year 2015. Our chapel is open because of
your time and dedication. What a wonderful gift you give to
our parish family and to our local community and neighboring
parishes. Thank you for all you do!
Over the holidays we would like to invite you to share your
ministry with others. As you visit with family, friends, and
neighbors, please extend a personal invitation to at least one
person to join our society as a regular weekly member or as a
substitute adorer. You can speak about your own experiences
and about what perpetual adoration means to you. What a
wonderful gift to give to our Lord!
Our ultimate goal is to have two adorers for every hour so
we are always in need of new members.
Save the Date: Rev. Sean Loomis will conduct a mini retreat for all members on Saturday morning, January 10th, 2015
beginning with mass at 8:30AM and ending around noon.
For more information or to sign up for an hour please contact Debbie & Sean McDermott (215) 504-9897 or email us at
