This year we’re all about exploring and celebrating this wonderful coast, its landscapes, people and stories in all their glory! Our four new Coastival Commissions take you under water at the indoor swimming pool for a magical sound and digital projections event, behind bars at the jail for our own Coastival Modern experience, on a magical, illuminated evening adventure in the Spa Gardens and let you experience talking selfies on a gigantic scale on the Spa Terrace. Our headline acts this year are Cast, Asian Dub Foundation, Snake Davis and Hope & Social, but of course we’ve loads of free music too for a whole range of tastes. Backseat Mafia are back with a weekend full of cutting edge music, from indie to folk, punk to psych, and The Den, Scarborough's most groovy music spot, join us for the first time with an eclectic mix of roots-inspired acts in Farrer's Bar. There’s our usual late night Engine Room with special guests DJ Format and King Zepha, plus we’ve choirs and classical events too at the Art Gallery and the Rotunda. Animated Objects Theatre are back again, this time with ‘The Song of the Leviathan’ and lots of free workshops for you to join. We’ve a mini film festival at the Stephen Joseph Theatre and a piece by Reckless Sleepers you don’t want to miss. If visual arts are your thing, then you can explore the various galleries around town, pop into the Old Parcels Office at the Railway Station, listen to talks by artists Clive Head and Kane Cunningham and visit the old town jail on Dean Road for our contemporary drawing exhibition. Rollercoastival thunders in over the weekend with even more creative stuff for kids in loads of venues throughout the town. All this begins with our spectacular opening event ‘Polar Quest’, all the way from the Spraoi Festival, Ireland, which takes us on a heroic journey over the icy wastes (otherwise known as Scarborough Seafront!) by Shackleton and his crew. Thank you for your continued support over the years for Coastival and we hope you have a fabulous weekend! Keep visiting www.coastival.com to keep up with our news! The Coastival Team West Pier to Spa 5-6pm We really appreciate the ongoing backing of Coastival by our patrons. We are indebted to them for their support. “Coastival has become an established fixture in the Scarborough calendar and Heather and I are delighted to be counted among its patrons. It was thrilling to witness not only the vast number of local people of all ages who were involved in the 2014 Festival and the camaraderie that encouraged but also the amount of people it attracted to the town. We said it was going to be really special and so it proved. 2016? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” Sir Alan & Lady Ayckbourn Popular Yorkshire jazz singer Claire Teal has been with us since the first Coastival in 2009. “Coastival occupies a special place in my heart. I was so pleased to be part of the very first event and honoured to be asked to be a patron.” Claire Teal Local musician Mark Richardson, who is drummer with Feeder and Skunk Anansie, says: Most of our events are free, but to book tickets or reserve a place where necessary, please visit our website or give us a ring. Not to mention that I was born in Leeds, grew up in Whitby and was given my break in the music industry by Scarborough’s own Little Angels 22 years ago, so I want to give something back if I can.” Mark Richardson Actor Sir Ben Kingsley was born just a stone’s throw away in Snainton and continues to be a great supporter of Coastival. “I am so happy to be a patron of this festival. Long may it thrive.” Sir Ben Kingsley Free All ages Open access; public spaces The South Pole is coming to Scarborough… across the icy wastes, with only the passing whales for company, the crew of Endurance are struggling to survive… their ship is lost to the freezing waters, their only hope of salvation a long march across the ice. This street performance marks one of the most daring expeditions ever undertaken by mankind. The ‘Endurance’ Expedition to the South Pole, led by Ernest Shackleton, was an ill-fated attempt to walk across Antarctica. What happened on this voyage is now legendary! When Shackleton’s ship ‘Endurance’ becomes icebound and crushed by the enormous ice sheets, the crew begin a journey across the frozen ice. Hauling their boats and equipment miles in the desperate hope of survival, it was a demonstration of endurance against exhaustion and death. With a spectacular street parade, Spraoi now pay homage to undoubtedly one of history’s most epic adventures as we observe the crew of the icebound ship begin their lengthy trek. Join Shackleton and his crew on this memorable human tale of strength and courage - relive the heroic age of exploration. Remember to wrap up warm, wear your wellies if wet and grab a torch if you’re scared of the dark. Please look out for children and, if possible, allow them to move to the front. If you are taking a dog, please ensure they are under control at all times. 3 new arts commissions. In the spring of 2015, Coastival put out a call for artists to submit ideas for Coastival 2016. Ever wondered what Marilyn Monroe or Elvis’s last words were? What the last meal of a condemned prisoner tastes like? Find out at The Last Supper, a performance that brings the tales of the final moments from the famous, and not-so-famous, to life. Described as “part performance, part meal”, The Last Supper is an intimately staged dinner for 39 people hosted by Reckless Sleepers. During the show, guests will hear a mixture of fact, fiction and fantasy as the last words and thoughts of the departed are spoken and then eaten by the hosts. Guests will be served a mixture of dishes, including 13 meals that were requested by prisoners on death row. “It is a clever little piece that considers the way last words are manipulated to suit history's victors and also gives voice to the voiceless” LG ★★★★ The Guardian Endurance and Survival Art Gallery Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm Free All ages Full access An exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery curated by the volunteers at Scarborough Museums Trust.
