Thailand is going “Green”. Visit and explore the country’s eco-friendly, attractions, services and more. Thai Tourism is going GREEN. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is asking you to ‘Enjoy Travel and Care for the Environment’. They are asking this of all parties concerned in tourism - you the tourists, hotels, attractions, transportation and tour agents. Reducing our carbon footprint, reducing pollution and maintaining and improving our environment are goals all of us should share. Contents Message from the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Dear Readers, Every year, the hotel business is a par t of the service sector which plays an important role in generating a large amount of income for Thailand. However, at present, while global warming results in climate change and there is an increase in severe disasters, international tourists have become more concerned about the significance of the global warming effects. Therefore, entrepreneurs of hotels and other forms of accommodation, besides focusing on the business benefits, have paid more attention on the campaign for decreasing the effects of global warming and protecting the environment. This in turn tends to be the first alternatives for tourists who would like to visit Thailand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aware of the effects of global warming, and has been supporting the supporting the operation of green hotels around the country which can provide visitors with a memorable impression and satisfy their needs. In this regard, TAT, in cooperation with the Green Leaf foundation and Red Mango Company Limited, has published the guidebook, Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand, with the hope that this would be beneficial for all stakeholders in the tourism industry, visitors, and the interested public. On this occasion, I would like to thank all hotels and resorts for their cooperation and participation in this campaign, and we wish the promotion of green hotels would contribute to environmental conservation and the growth of sustainable tourism in Thailand as well. SURAPHON SVETASRENI Governor Contents Message from the President of the Green Leaf Foundation Message from the President Today, global warming has become a pressing issue affecting all people and economies. Immediate action must be taken to protect our natural resources and safeguard our future. The tourism industry acknowledged that it has an impor tant par t to play in reducing emissions and acting in a responsible and sustainable manner. As a result, several Thai and international organizations joined hands to establish an important environmental initiative called The Green Leaf Foundation. Partners who worked to create the foundation include The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, United Nations Environment Program, Thai Hotels Association, and the Association for Development of Environmental Quality. From the outset, the intention was to set clear standards for hotel and tourism operators in order to help them implement a good code of practice, save energy and conserve the environment. The main activities of the Green Leaf Foundation focus on mitigating and adapting to climate change by saving energy in accordance with government policy. The foundation is united in its goal to find the best environmentally friendly solutions for the hotel and tourism industry. Part of the initiative is also the Health Promotion Hotel Programme which not only implemented a smoke free environment for hotels but also actively promotes health tourism across the entire industry. Contents The Green Concept Green Hotels & Resorts Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Green Tourism in Thailand “Go Green!” says the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). With constant reports concerning global warming and climate change, more people and businesses are looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Green tourism requires a balance between promotion and environmental protection. To better serve in Thailand’s quest to preserve the environment and to achieve sustainable tourism, TAT has identified four Green Initiatives. • Raising awareness of green tourism operators and services through the creation of a database of environmentally responsible businesses. • Recognizing, developing and rewarding green tourism role models. • Organizing green tourism conferences, meetings and educational seminars. • Implementing a “Seven Greens” program that helps in the accomplishment of the above three initiatives and that also promotes increased corporate responsibility (CSR). The “Seven Greens” program targets seven needs, including the need for everyone to take care of the planet. The “Seven Greens” are as follows. Green Heart Tourists are asked to be environmentally aware and to take an active role in the effor ts to preser ve and protect the environment at all tourist locales. Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Green Activity TAT wishes to promote activities that are well-suited to the local ecosystem. Green Logistics Lower impact transportation is being promoted. Buses have a lower carbon impact than a single occupant car while riding a bicycle or walking are both good for your health and good for the environment. Green Service Hotels and resor ts use natural based materials and water and energy efficiently in order to recycle, decrease air and noise pollution. Green Plus Corporate Social Responsibility involves both doing no harm and intentionally doing good. Green Attraction Tourist sites must be responsibly managed with a view to respecting the natural environment. Green Community In communities with attractions having unique culture, traditions and lifestyles, balance between the generated income and maintaining local traditions and customs is necessary. These initiatives are essential for tourists to learn more about the communities they visit. Each of the four major regions of Thailand has several “green” attractions. In Northern Thailand are the Chiang Mai City Arts and Culture Centre, Hall of Opium (Golden Triangle Park), and Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park. In the Central Region are the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Gardens, Erawan National Park (Kanchanaburi), and Kaeng Krachan National Park. In the Eastern Region are Tat Ton National Park and Pha Taem National Park. Of particular interest is the low carbon dioxide project in Ko Chang. The second largest island in the Gulf of Thailand is the first designated area for sustainable tourism. The objective is to reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism trade by educating resorts about carbon emissions. In Thailand’s Southern region, the focus is on Ko Samui with “The Green Island Project”. The tourism industr y, in conjunction with TAT’s “Seven Greens” program, is taking a pro-active stance to restore environmental quality. The project is seeking the active involvement of all tourism stakeholders to maintain the beauty and nature of this tropical island paradise. TAT is asking all concerned with the tourism industr y – tourists, hotels, attractions, transpor tation and tour agents - to “Enjoy Travel and Care for the Environment”. “Go Green!” Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 First question: does the resort blend in with the local environment? If it does, nine times out of ten, the property will practice eco-friendly tourism. resort to fit into the local environment while minimizing its environmental impact then the resort already has an environmental blueprint, and the rest is easy. But if the resort stands out, is garish, and much of the surrounding vegetation has been destroyed to build it, you know that being “green” is not a high priority on the agenda. A good way to check this if you are contemplating staying at a beach resort is to simply look at it from the sea, if it stands out like a monstrosity then eco-friendliness in not a high priority, but if you can hardly see the resort, or the part you can see blends tastefully with the environment, that’s a good harbinger of eco-consciousness initiatives. Question whether or not a resort is built with eco-friendly materials? This may be difficult in the big city, but it’s a lot easy with a resort upcountry, featuring a number of different bungalows. Phone ahead, or email, and see if the resort is practicing eco-consciousness. Then, if you do stay at that specific resort, follow up and see if indeed the resort is practicing what it preaches. Another good indication is to see if structures have been built around ancient trees, or if they have been incorporated into the design of the property. In Thailand, trees over 100 years old are blessed by monks and have multi-coloured ribbons wrapped around them to indicate their uniqueness. Another good benchmark for checking eco-consciousness is seeing if a resort or hotel is committed to local environment initiatives; if just takes care of its own property, but turns a blind eye to the surrounding area, it will not be doing the most good with the initiatives it is trying to implement. Many may think that these are superficial observations, but if a developer has taken the time to blend the construction of the What It Takes To Be Eco-Friendly Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 What is a Green Hotel? Environmentally friendly Thailand is “Going Green” and is asking all people involved in tourism in Thailand to do likewise. This includes the tourists, the tour operators, hotel and resort owners, tourist attractions, and transportation. The goal is to maintain and improve the natural environment by reducing our carbon footprint and, therefore, developing sustainable tourism in the Kingdom. The third area of “Green” hotel and resort management is reducing solid waste. Recycling is key. Supporting green vendors, those who believe in minimal wrapping and who deliver products one day and collect packaging the next day for recycling, can reduce waste by up to 80%. Going Green is a long-term strategy to improving the environment and improving the long-term value of the property. Energy-saving measures not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also reduce operating costs, the savings of which can be passed on to the tourist. Such measures include linen cards, motion sensor lighting for public areas (hallways, restrooms, exercise rooms, etc.) and fluorescent bulbs. Taking advantage of the natural surroundings and preserving trees and foliage increases the air quality through the natural cycle of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Even in the heart of the city, these hotels have better outdoor air quality than their non-green neighbors. Water management systems for hotels can reduce costs and save a precious resource. Green Hotels and Resorts institute measures such as drinking water in restaurants on request only, low-flow showerheads, low-flow toilets and reduced flow dishwashing valves. Linen cards drastically reduce the cost of hotel laundry and its water usage. All of the “green initiatives” conspire to make guests, staff and management both healthier and happier. A Green Hotel is a healthy gift that can continue to give. Make a difference today! We have only one Earth. Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Does the resor t have liquid soap and shampoo dispensers in the washrooms, again a big money saver in the long run. While guests are staying at the resort does it promote non-polluting activities, e.g. mountain biking or kayaking as compared to car tours and a speedboat trip. Does the resort have an organic garden and grow any of its own food? More importantly, does the resort management investigate the growing practices used by companies it purchases food from, e.g. do they use harmful pesticides? Providing a healthy menu with minimal chemical additives, preservative and MSG is another way a resort can prove its eco-consciousness. Does it have a proper wastewater program or does it just dump its raw sewage into the nearby stream or ocean. Does the proper ty use electric vehicles to transport guests throughout the property? The building, maintenance and service of the resort’s swimming pool can be extremely wasteful, or not. Check out www.poolasia.com for tips on how to build an environmentally-friendly pool. And if the resort is located next to a particularly fragile ecosystem, the resort should display information about that, so that guests can learn more about the area and do what they can to help. Eco-Friendly Hotels’ Green Initiatives The resor t can also win over people to the eco-conscious side by staging fun and interesting activities informing guests how they can all waste less while enjoying the planet’s beautiful yet dwindling resources. It all starts with an eco-friendly design and the use of eco-friendly construction materials. Then once the resort is built, does it have eco-friendly operating procedures? Does it have a recycling program? Does it have proper signage asking guests to only have their towels and linen cleaned when necessary this can be an enormous money saver for the resort. Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Organic Gardens in Hotels and Resorts The number of organic gardens in hotels and resorts is increasing as these businesses find many of their guests respond very favourably to the opportunity of being served fresh, locally grown, organic food. This food is so well received primarily because the growers do not have to consider packing, shipping and shelf-life issues but can instead give priority to freshness, nutritional value and taste. Additionally, the diners can feel secure that their food was not subjected to pesticides and fertilizers in the growing process. Hotels which have invested in their own gardens are finding that, in addition to their being environmetally firiendly, the gardens help draw guests who prefer or demand organic meals. The gardens can also attract convention and banquet business that may require a specialized menu, and in many cases these guests will happily pay a premium for organic meals. Best of all from the view of the protection of the environment, because chemicals are not used, the land is preserved from damage, and the use of local food items saves the necessity of and expense of fuel-consuming transportation. It’s easy to see why organic gardens in hotels and resorts is a growing trend. Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Green Leaf Foundation Th e G re e n Le a f Fo u n d a t i o n i s dedicated to developing an e ve r- i m p rov i n g q u a l i t y o f t h e environment and an ever-improving quality of the tourism industry. On March 17, 1998 six organizations – Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Hotels Association, United Nations Environment Program, Demand Side Management Office of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Association for the Development of Environmental Qualit y, and Metropolitan Water Works Authority – established and registered the Green Leaf organization. Activities of the Green Leaf Foundation have included workshops and training seminars aimed at environmental education, environmental standards and energy efficiency. Green Leaf Programs are organized by and environmental assessments are audited by BEPTA (Board of Environmental Promotion of Tourism Activities). The Green Leaf Foundation has three major objectives: • To promote knowledge of and to support studies and research in the creation of a comprehensive body of environmental conservation information. be assessing and auditing hotels. Hotels that are resource efficient and that practice sound environmental policies are awarded a Green Leaf Certificate. These range from 1 to 5 leaves, with 5 being awarded to the hotels with the best environmental management. One of the many benefits of participating in a Green Leaf program is saving costs. Environmentally-friendly policies such as efficient water usage, energy usage, and waste management, reduce operating costs and costs to the consumer. The Green Leaf Foundation serves to improve tourism for all. • To assist owners and operators in the tourism industr y in developing a quality environmental standard in the workplace. • To develop standards of environmental practices for tourism related businesses that respond to consumers’ needs and requirements. All Green Leaf programs adhere the use of environmentally efficient technology in developing quality environmentally friendly tourism. While the foundation has run programs for embassies, other foundations, universities and airlines, it considers its real first step to Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Toward these goals, Green Leaf Hotel Fairs and Seminars have been organized for hotels nationwide. Venues have included Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen. Because Green Leaf ’s primary goal is to sustain the environment, programs and seminars encourage the participation of other tourism-related operators, government organizations, educational institutions and private organizations. They also enjoy the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Because another Green Leaf goal is to help tourists be environmentally conscious and friendly, it publishes a directory of Green Leaf Hotels. Tourists may consult the directory to see which hotels at their destination are environmentally-friendly and to what extent they follow environmental “best practices” by taking note of the 1 through 5 Green Leaf Certification, with 5 being the highest. These may be instantly cross-referenced with the hotel’s star rating, standard of accommodations and services. Green Leaf Goals The Green Leaf Foundation’s main goal is to institutionalize environmental best practices for all hotels. Under the motto “Save Money, Save Environment”, a Green Leaf additional goal is to support and promote the efforts of those hotels and resorts already practicing environmentally-friendly policies. The program focuses on having a minimum impact on the natural environment while appreciating the value of energy and natural resources such as good air quality and water. Green Leaf is proud to have accomplished much thus far in achieving its goals. Over 1,000 hotels have participated in Green Leaf Hotel Fairs and Seminars. Currently there are 470 hotels and resorts that have a Green Leaf Certification. The Green Leaf Foundation continues to have success in meeting its goals and encourages the participation of customers, consumers and tourists in their efforts to save energy and natural resources. With continued endeavors by all participants in the tourism industry, the environment will be greener and self-sustaining. Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 Standards for Green Leaf Cer tification are baseed on those derived from 20 reference hotels. There are First Standard Scores and Second Standard Scores. The First Standard Score requires a score of more than 77.9% for a five leaf, the highest rating. The Second Standard Score requires a rating of more than 66.5% for a five leaf certification. The process consists of three steps: a Screening Process to ensure that a hotel is in compliance with current environmental legislation, a Qualifying Process, and a Grading Process. The Screening Process consists of 13 questions that assess understanding of and implementation of existing rules and regulations. The Qualifying Process questions current understanding of proper hotel environmental management. The Grading Process is a self-audit that rates a hotel’s current operational process. The grading process looks at 18 areas as follows: environmental policy and communication, human resource development, committees and teams, goals and strategic planning, waste management, energy efficiency, water efficiency, kitchen (food and beverage), laundry, green procurement, indoor air quality (air and noise pollution), water resources and quality, spa and massage, recreational facilities (fitness center, swimming pool, etc.), security and safety, ecological impacts, collaboration with community and local administration, and local cultural encouragement. Included in the certification process is a thirty-day time period in which to complete and return grading questionnaires along with supporting documentation such as official documents, photos and data. Audit teams will visit the hotel or resort with a 48-hour notification. The Green Leaf Foundation is pleased with the success of the Green Leaf Hotel Program. The number of hotels already certified and those upgrading their certification is a positive indication that Thailand’s tourism industry seriously considers its environmental obligations. Certifying Hotels and Resorts Certifying hotels and resorts as environmentally-friendly, is the main goal of the Green Leaf Foundation. Just what does this entail? Contents Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand 2011 How Tourists can make their Trips more Eco-friendly Listed below are suggestions from Independent Traveler.com on how you can reduce your carbon footprint while traveling to your vacation spot and then how you can be a responsible sightseer once you arrive at your destination. Getting There Responsible Sightseeing • For shorter trips, take the train instead of flying - especially in Europe or other regions where train service is fast and frequent. • “Take nothing but photographs, and leave nothing but footprints” is oft uttered and a good adage to try and adhere to. • When renting a car, choose the smallest vehicle that can comfortably accommodate you. Decline any “free” upgrades (which will cost you more in gas). • Travel with a tour operator that’s environmentally responsible. Before you book, be sure to ask about group size (smaller groups tend to make less of an environmental impact), whether the tours are led by locals, how the tour operator gives back to the community, and what kind of lodging is included. • Rent a hybrid car. • Taking a long road trip? If your personal vehicle is large and not ver y fuel-efficient, consider renting an economy car instead. You’ll save gas and avoid putting miles on your own vehicle. • Whenever possible, use public transportation instead of a taxis or rental cars. Better yet, walk or bike. • When hiking, always stay on marked trails and maintain a safe distance from any animals you encounter. Deposit your trash in marked receptacles or take it with you when you leave. Light campfires only in established fire rings and be sure they’re completely extinguished before you leave. • When snorkeling, do not touch the coral or stir up sediment, as these actions can damage the reef ’s fragile ecosystem. • Try to buy local products whenever possible instead of those that have been flown or shipped in from overseas. You’ll support the local economy and get a taste of native cuisine. Do not, however, buy souvenirs or other products made from endangered animals or plants — in most cases you can’t get them through Customs anyway. • Treat the locals with respect. Learn a few words in the native language, be open to cultural differences, and read up on the area before your trip so you’re sensitive to issues of dress and behavior. • Consider taking a volunteer vacation to give back directly to the place you’re visiting. Contents The Green Leaf-Certification Green Hotels & Resorts-Certified The Green Leaf Certification is designed to recognise hotels which have passed the standard quality assessment and demonstrated their practical commitment towards environmental preservation and the efficient usage of energy and natural resources. Hotels which pass the audit will receive up to five levels of “Green Leaves.” The certification period will remain in effect for two years from the date of issue.
