Welcome
A N OT E F RO M T H E
F ES TI VA L DIR EC TO R —
It is my great privilege to present JIFF
2015; a world-class offering of 60 Australian
premiere features, documentaries and TV
series from Israel and around the globe.
The agony and the ecstasy of the Jewish
experience condensed into a few weeks.
4000 years of storytelling continues…
I look forward to hearing your stories in
the cinema foyer.

“This is a film that easily stands with the giants that have tackled the subject
matter, crafting a new and vital facet of an impossibly complex story.”
– TwitchFilm
It’s 1944 in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. When
prisoner Saul discovers the body of a boy he believes to be his
young son, he is determined to find a rabbi to perform a proper
burial. It’s a secret mission that may collide with an uprising
that is being planned.
This astonishing debut from director László Nemes swept
the Cannes Film Festival, winning four awards including the
Grand Prix. Generating significant Oscar buzz not just for
Best Foreign Language Film, but for Best Picture and Best
Director as well, Son of Saul is the work of a true visionary,
featuring stylistic innovations that make this a depiction of
the Holocaust that is unlike any other.
“By any standards, this would be an outstanding film,
but for a debut it is remarkable.” – The Guardian

DOCUDR AMA
“I really wanted to blow up the plane. That’s the truth.”
– Hijacker Therese Halsa in 2015
On May 8, 1972 four Fatah members boarded a flight from
Vienna to Israel. Once in the air they brandished weapons and
took over the plane. Over 24 nerve-wracking hours, the Israeli
authorities attempt to negotiate with the group, even as they
boldly and secretly planned the first ever takeover of airplane
hijackers in history.
This docu-drama features interviews with nearly everyone
involved, from one of the hijackers, to then-Transportation
Minister Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu, who was one
of the Israeli soldiers tasked with taking down the hijackers.
Producer Nati Dinnar decided to create a hybrid drama-doco,
knowing that if it were purely dramatised, audiences would
find it hard to believe that this extraordinary moment in
history actually happened. Nominated for Best Documentary
at the 2015 Ophir Awards (Israeli Oscars).

The Spirit of Hannah Arendt
“Despite all the efforts of the prosecution, everybody could see that this man was
not a ‘monster’, but it was difficult indeed not to suspect that he was a clown.”
– Hannah Arendt, Eichmann In Jerusalem
When philosopher and writer Hannah Arendt attended the
1961 trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, it had a
profound effect on her view of humanity. Were horrific acts the
result of radical intent, or a function of thoughtlessness? She
coined the now-famous phrase “banality of evil” in her report,
which appeared in her seminal work Eichmann In Jerusalem.
This documentary explores the life of Arendt in a way
that’s never been seen before. Her controversial private life,
including a love affair with philosopher and Nazi supporter
Martin Heidegger, is illuminated here in detail as we visit
the people and places that shaped Arendt. This fascinating
documentary explores her loves, betrayals, ostracism and
influence as one of the sharpest writers of the 20th century.

Experimenter
In 1961, Yale University psychology professor Stanley Milgram
was determined to find out how and why people could be
pushed to extremes. The son of Holocaust survivors, he was
driven to create the “obedience experiments”: how far will
ordinary people go if commanded to by an authority figure?
Branded a monster by the press, Milgram fights to prove to the
world that “evil” may not be what we thought.
The latest film from indie director Michael Almereyda
(Anarchy) was a huge hit at its Sundance Film Festival
premiere, its playful yet provocative true story winning
over audiences. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Peter
Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder.
F E AT U R E
“Offers a heady brew of theories about the essence of human nature,
and a Peter Sarsgaard performance that catches Milgram in all his
seductive, megalomaniacal brilliance.” – Variety

(LA LOI)
“I suffer more from the humiliations inflicted by my country than
from those inflicted on her.” – Simone Veil
In 1974, French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing put his
Health Minister Simone Veil in charge of a daunting task:
successfully carrying a new abortion law through parliament.
Veil, an Auschwitz survivor, spent her life fighting for women’s
rights. With three days to argue the law to parliamentarians,
and after her male colleagues abandon her to the task alone,
Veil faces down both sexism and anti-Semitism without ever
losing her cool, and ends up making history.
Award-winning Emmanuelle Devos (Coco Avant Chanel)
delivers a spellbinding performance as the legendary politician
and writer Veil. Christian Faure’s masterful direction employs
a beautiful film-noir look, depicting the backroom wheeling
and dealing of politics with all the tension and engagement of a
thriller. Also stars Michaël Cohen (Shall We Dance?) as a young
Jacques Chirac.

Einstein in the Holy Land
(EINSTEIN BE’ERETZ HAKODESH)
In 1923, Albert Einstein visited Palestine, travelling to Jerusalem
and Tel Aviv. It was a visit that would have a profound impact
on the legendary scientist, who struggled with an inner conflict:
he was a Zionist, but one who intensely disliked nationalism.
This documentary, based on Einstein’s personal travel
diary, presents the world with the first-ever insight into
Einstein’s thoughts during his trip to the Holy Land. Never
before has the story of Israel’s formation been told from the
perspective of one of history’s greatest minds, who turned
down the opportunity to be Israel’s first president.

Nobelists
The Polgar Variant
“The moment you become a Nobelist, you’re
not just a scientist: in some ways, you become
a celebrity.” – Uri Rosenwaks
“Geniuses are made, not born.”
Over the past decade, eight Israeli scientists
have won the Nobel Prize, an extraordinary
achievement for a country its size. But beneath
all the celebrations, pomp and ceremony, what
do the awards mean? And what effect do they
have on our lives? Aaron Ciechanover details
his journey from stealing and selling thongs
on the beach to becoming a groundbreaking
scientist; chemist Dan Shechtman goes from
a laughing stock to a Nobel laureate. In four
35-minute episodes, director Rosenwaks
teases out the fascinating life stories behind
the awards, as these fascinating people explain
their amazing achievements in accessible and
entertaining ways.
László Polgár was a passionate man who
believed that genius was something you
could teach. The canvas he used was his three
daughters. The medium he chose was chess.
Suzan, Sofi and Judit were kept from school
and trained to become chess masters in
communist-controlled Budapest of the 1970s.
They ate, slept and breathed chess, training
all day, every day, for many years. Polgár
taught them to beat not just their opponents,
but all expectations. Official selection at the
Jerusalem Film Festival.

Yitzhak Rabin: a Soldier
Devoted To Peace
The Zionist Idea
“We are destined to live together, on the
same soil in the same land… We say to you today
in a loud and clear voice: Enough of
blood and tears. Enough.” – Yitzhak Rabin
“A thoughtful and invaluable cinematic
document.” – The Hollywood Reporter
In 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin was assassinated by an ultranationalist
following a rally in Tel Aviv. Now, twenty
years after his tragic death, this documentary
looks back at a man of courage who devoted
his life to his county, who was committed
to bringing peace to his people. A former
soldier who had fought on the ground in the
1948 war, and later led Israel to victory in
the Six Day War as chief of staff of the Israeli
Defense Forces, Rabin understood the true
cost of conflict, and was determined to avoid
it at all costs.
This fresh examination of the history of Israel
sets out to tell “the story of Zionism as seen
through the inhabitants of the land”, be they
Jewish or Arab, Israeli or Palestinian. This is
a film that does not shy away from difficult
questions, examining the competing claims
by different groups over the same territory.
Why is this one region so important? Has
the reality of the Jewish state gone to plan?
This urgently relevant documentary is a
fascinating and multidimensional exploration
of what it means to be a Zionist.

“Censored Voices is a reminder that glorious myths of wars and the men who
fight them wither under scrutiny, in Israel and everywhere else.”
– Screen International
In 1967, Israel was threatened by the armies of Egypt,
Syria and Jordan, which had gathered to annihilate the state.
Six days later, the war was over. It was seen as a decisive victory
for Israel, but beneath the celebrations were stories of the real
battles that have remained secret until now.
Directly following the war, a group of young kibbutzniks,
led by renowned writer Amos Oz and editor Avraham Shapira,
recorded intimate conversations with Israeli soldiers, talking
to them about their experiences, the heroism and the tragedies.
Censored for 50 years, the tapes are now finally available, and
we witness the men as they listen to their confessions from half
a century ago. Narrated by Oz himself, this film premiered at
Sundance, and won an Ophir Award (Israeli Oscar) for Best
Documentary.

The Prime Ministers:
Soldiers and Peacemakers
The second part of the Prime Ministers film adaptation,
Soldiers and Peacemakers examines Prime Ministers Rabin
and Begin from a unique insider perspective. On the 20th
anniversary of Rabin’s assassination, the film uncovers
previously untold details, shows unseen footage, and gives
fresh perspectives of this tumultuous time.
Yehuda Avner was both a key witness to and participant in
Israel’s history: speechwriter to Prime Ministers Levi Eshkol

The Voice of Peace
Beyond the Fear
(BALIU ROBEZA)
For 20 years, a pirate radio station based on
a ship in international waters off the coast
of Tel Aviv broadcast messages of peace and
love, as well as great music, to millions across
the Middle East and Europe. Fighter pilot
turned political activist Abie Nathan was
determined in his mission to bring Israelis
and Arabs together in peace, and soon
counted Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Yoko Ono,
Johnny Mathis and The Carpenters among
his supporters. This documentary takes us
into this peaceful, groundbreaking act of

Immigration officer Meir Cohen must
examine his own values when he is tasked with
deporting African labor immigrants. A hardworking man struggling to make ends meet,
he finds himself at odds with his country’s
new brutal policies. The real lives of foreign
workers in Israel is revealed in this ironic
yet compassionate film about belonging and
upheaval, home and family.
Yossi Marshek was nominated for an Ophir
(Israeli Oscar) for his performance as Meir.
In June of 1948, six weeks after the State
of Israel was established, Captain Meir
Tuviansky, an Israeli officer formerly in the
British army, was accused of treason. Over
four hours, he would be interrogated, court
martialed and sentenced to death. But was
he really guilty? And what motivated the
head of security to act so swiftly and harshly?
This biopic dramatises an incredible chapter
in Israel’s history, and the resulting fallout
that is remembered to this day.

“Feels less like a documentary, and more like a long, wide-ranging, disarmingly

smartest, most articulate and most compassionate figures.” – Indiewire
In a never-before-seen interview recorded a few years before
his death, legendary filmmaker Sidney Lumet guides us
through his life and work. From his early years on the Yiddish
stage to directing some of cinema’s most enduring classics,
including 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and
Network, he is regarded as one of the most socially-conscious
directors in cinema history. With his typical candor, humour
and grace, he reveals what mattered to him as an artist and a
human being.
Directed by the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning
filmmaker Nancy Buirski, this revealing look at one of cinema’s
greatest filmmakers depicts an artist who is funny, humble
and reflective over a body of work that endures to this day. It
premiered in the Cannes Classics section at the 2015 Cannes

Arabic Movie
(SERET ARAVIT)
It was a tradition of 1970s Friday afternoons in Israel: tuning in
to the only television channel and watching the Arab movie of
the week. It was a national pastime, and a strange one at that:
how did Israel’s official TV station obtain these films? Why did
it insist on regularly showing films made by “the enemy”? And
why were Israelis so interested in Arabic cinema?
This documentary looks into one of the most unlikely
moments in Israel’s history, and examines not just how but why
the country shared cultural heroes with those they were often
at war with. A nostalgic examination of a time gone by, and one
that raises some challenging questions.

Johann Radmann is an ambitious young lawyer in 1958
Frankfurt, keen to move out of traffic court and do something
more meaningful. When he discovers that many former Nazis
have quietly reintegrated into German society, he begins seeking
them out, building cases against them. It’s a tougher fight than
he anticipates, as he experiences pushback from a country that
simply wants to forget.
A massive hit at the Toronto Film Festival, Labyrinth
of Lies is a semi-fictionalised depiction of the 1963 – 1965
Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. Through Radmann (himself based
on four different prosecutors), the film skillfully captures the
disbelief and frustration many young Germans felt at their
country’s history, and follows those who fought the system
to make the country face up to what it was. Stars Alexander
Fehling (Inglorious Basterds, Homeland) and Friederike Becht
(Hannah Arendt, The Reader). The film is Germany’s official
entry for the 2016 Foreign Language Oscar.

Imaginary Feasts
Bulgarian Rhapsody
(FESTINS IMAGINAIRES)
“Warm and tender evocation of
childhood innocence and first love.”
– The Hollywood Reporter
In the Nazi concentration camps, in Soviet
Gulags, in Japanese war camps, prisoners
would write hundreds of cooking recipes.
These starving inmates who would kill for
a piece of bread, painstakingly wrote these
recipes at great personal risk. These recipes
became a universal act of resistance, and
one that has never been studied before.
This documentary explores extraordinary
moments in history, and the power of
imaginary feasts to feed the soul.
In 1943, the Jews of Greater Bulgaria are forced
to adhere to Germany’s rule. The friendship of
teenagers Moni (a Jewish kid from Sofia) and
Giogio (the son of the Commissar for Jewish
Affairs’ chauffeur) is tested when they both
fall in love with Shelly, a beautiful 17-year-old
Jewish girl from Greece.
A story of teenage love and friendship told
against the backdrop of the Holocaust, this
was Bulgaria’s submission for the Best Foreign

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs
and the New South Africa
“A stunning documentary, Soft Vengeance is as much
about human behaviour as it is about history.”
– NPR
As a young, white, Jewish man in South Africa, Albie Sachs
was determined to help bring Apartheid to an end. A fierce
advocate for equality, Sachs was subsequently jailed, put in
solitary confinement, tortured, exiled, and the subject of an
attempted assassination. When his friends promised to avenge
him, Sachs resisted the idea: “if we achieve true freedom and
democracy,” he said, “that will be my soft vengeance.”
This Peabody Award-winning documentary takes us into
the remarkable life of a man who refused to ignore a systemic
injustice. Sachs was one of the key figures in South Africa’s
transformation, a man who stood by the conviction that
reconciliation was more important than retribution, regardless
of what he was put through.

“To find strength, I remembered the

Disillusioned with the state of post-war
Communist Romania, five Jews who fought
in the resistance against the Nazis stage an
elaborate bank heist by convincing everyone
at the scene of the crime that they are filming
a movie. Knowing their punishment will be
severe, the five decide that win or lose, any fate
is better than their current one. But none of
them can guess what actually awaits them.
Funny, exciting and based on an incredible
true story, Closer to the Moon stars stars Vera
Farmiga (The Departed) and Mark Strong
(The Imitation Game).
Growing up Jewish in the 1980s Paris projects,
where France had pushed its Jews and Arabs
from its unwelcome colonies, isn’t easy,
especially with an absent mother and brutal
stepfather. But Stéphanie is determined to go
to college and pursue her love of dance. With
its leg warmers, torn leotards and excellent
1980s soundtrack, this film could well be
described as the French Flashdance! A funny,
autobiographical coming-of-age story about
pushing past the difficulties of your reality and
following your dreams.

A Tale of Love and Darkness
(SIPPUR AL AHAVA VE HOSECH)
It is 1945, and a young Amos Oz is living in Jerusalem with
his parents. It is a difficult time for both the nation and for Oz,
whose mother has put the weight of all her hopes and dreams
upon him. Even as he joins the fight against British occupation,
he remains a thoughtful child whose destiny is forged alongside
that of Israel.
Premiering in official selection at Cannes 2015, this is the
directorial debut from Natalie Portman, who presents a insight
into one of Israel’s best-known writers. She also speaks fluent
Hebrew in her role as Oz’s mother Fania: a Holocaust survivor
struggling with the horrors of the past and the challenges of the

In the 1950s, the most popular children’s
books in Israel were from the series Children

This Ophir Award (Israeli Oscar) winning

shared by a generation of devoted readers.

Thirteen-year-old Aharon is an only child who is determined
to carry the Torah scrolls on Simchat Torah, and impress
Alizia, the most popular girl in the neighbourhood. But the
celebration leads to tensions within the family: his father
believes the honour will lead to more children, but his mother
cannot bear to suffer another miscarriage. Torn between his
parents’ conflicting wishes, Aharon finds himself under intense
pressure that may turn his triumph into disaster.
This debut film is a showcase for some tremendous
performances from Lior Ashkenazi (Footnote), Assi Levy
(The World Is Funny) and newcomer Agam Ozalvo as Aharon.
Though a celebration of culture and religion, it is not afraid to
ask tough questions of its characters and their beliefs.

struggling mother, drops his stash into Nat’s dough. Suddenly,
the customers can’t get enough of his challah, and Nat
discovers that his dwindling shop has customers lining up
around the block. It’s a change of fortune that’s noticed by local
business rivals and drug lords alike, none of whom are happy
with Nat’s success.
This heartwarming comedy about an unlikely friendship
received a standing ovation at its festival screenings in the US.
Its all-star cast includes Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones),
Philip Davies (Silk), Ian Hart (Harry Potter) and Pauline
Collins (Bleak House).

Meseganio Tadela is 74 years old and obstinate. Since
immigrating to Israel from Ethiopia 28 years ago, he has held
onto his culture and refused to assimilate. But when his wife
passes away, it sets him on a journey that takes him through his
children’s homes, where he discovers the his heritage may be a
thing of the past.
Based partly on Shakespeare’s King Lear, and partly
on writer/director Bazi Gete’s own family experience, this
is a gentle film that depicts one of Israel’s lesser-shown
subcultures. Featuring a brilliant performance by legendary
Ethiopian actor Debebe Eshetu in the central role, Red Leaves
won the FIPRESCI Prize for Best First Film at the Jerusalem
Film Festival.

Suicide
Atomic Falafel
How do you commit the perfect
crime in 24 hours?
“A madcap comedy about a serious issue.”
– Variety
A young, successful lawyer must descend into
the seedy Jerusalem underworld, contend
with a detective who suspects her of being a
manipulative adulteress, and commit a perfect
crime in order to save her husband and family
from a ruthless loan shark. Taking place across
parallel time zones, this tense, unpredictable
debut from director Benny Fredman boasts
an all-star cast of Israel’s best actors. An
intense twist-filled suspense in the vein of
The Usual Suspects, Suicide has been called
the first action-thriller to come out of Israel.
A girl from Israel and a girl from Iran are
worried their countries may be about to go to
war. Deciding that it’s up to them to thwart
this, the girls work together on social media as
they leak their respective countries’ nuclear
secrets on Facebook.
Writer/director Dror Shaul won multiple
awards at Sundance, Berlin and the Ophir
Awards (Israeli Oscars) for his 2006 film
Sweet Mud. His follow-up film is an absurdist
satire about a very timely issue.

JeruZalem
Freak Out
(MESUVAG HARIG)
It’s Judgement Day in Jerusalem. When two
American frat girls are invited by a handsome
young archaeologist to party in Jerusalem, they
are ill-prepared for what’s about to unfold: the
end of the world. Trapped within the walls of
the city, the trio must survive against a plague
of the undead and winged demons.
Winner of the Audience Award at the
Jerusalem Film Festival, JeruZalem is one
of Israel’s first-ever horror films. A schlocky
romp with a keen sense of humour, JeruZalem
is the cleverest twist on the found-footage
sub-genre to date.
“JeruZalem’s production values rival
much of Hollywood’s output, so if these
are Israel’s baby steps into genre territory,
then we are in for some great things.”
– The Horror Section
“What are you worried about?
The army has your back.”
Matan is a pencil-pushing soldier in the Israel
Defence Force who is missing his mum. He’s
assigned to patrol a remote base in the north
of the country with a group of soldiers he
doesn’t know, and the homesick Matan is an
easy target for the bored soldiers who decide
to make his life hell. But when strange and
frightening things begin happening around
them, the soldiers begin to question whether
any of them will come out of this routine
assignment alive.
Freak Out is a great example of Israel’s
new wave of playful genre cinema.

“An intimate, informative and at times awkward look at the insular
religious community and its approach to sexuality.”
– The New York Times
“What is it about that little sperm that looks like a tadpole and
has everyone so hot and bothered?” asks director, narrator and
ultra-Orthodox Jew, Ori Gruder. In ultra-Orthodox Judaism,
masturbation is forbidden. “One who spills his seed literally
kills his sons,” says one rabbi. So how far are these men willing
to go to control their natural urges?
Gruder was grappling with how to talk to his 10-year-old
son about sex when he decided to make the film. He takes the
camera into his own home, asks his rabbi to bless the making of
the film, and explores just how strictly these rules are enforced.
It’s a surprising, revealing and occasionally shocking window
into a world that is almost never shown. Official selection at the
Jerusalem Film Festival.

Goel Ratzon was a self-proclaimed healer
in
southern Tel Aviv, with 21 wives and 38
children. His harem included the children of
his devoted follower Shuly, who encouraged
her daughters Sheri, Ilanit and Galit to marry
him, despite the fact that Galit was underage.
Now, five years after Goel was jailed, these
women look back at the time they spent in
this cult, coming to terms with their past and
fighting to understand how they could have
fallen under the spell of such a man.
There are more startups in Tel Aviv than
in the whole of Europe. This documentary
follows four different startup teams hoping
to break through and sell their idea. They
will risk their families, their friends and their
bank accounts to become either bankrupt or
millionaires. Filmed over two years, this film is
a rare glimpse behind the curtain of the High
Tech Nation’s rollercoaster of successes and
failures, and an exciting view as to how the
new High Tech Nation actually works.

77:78 On The Map
(77:78 AL HA’MAPA)
1977 is a tough year for Israel. But among the tensions with
Palestine and the resignation of Prime Minister Rabin,
something unexpected happens: Maccabi Tel Aviv, a fairly
average basketball team, manage to take on the rest of the
world in the European Cup.
From the David and Goliath match against the Soviet
Union and the centuries of bad blood flowing onto the court,
to the unbelievable events unfolding behind the scenes, the
odds were clearly against Maccabi. And what happened next
changed history.
Award-winning filmmaker Dani Menkin (Dolphin Boy)
tackles one of the most significant moments in Israel’s sporting
history. What began as a simple sporting event became a
triumphant symbol for Israel itself.
