In the following, the most significant steps in the expansion of the SDE will be outlined. It is important to establish a simple and clear common ground. This basic design strategy was communicated to the courses and projects involved. It is, in short, to focus on energy reduction by passive means and the employment of integrated energy design as expressed in TASK 23. Currently two courses work with solar decathlon projects. This will result in 7 complete Solar Decathlon proposals developed by 28 students in 4 person teams (course 1198111982), and one more experimental work focusing on identifying the optimal interior cladding system and structural system (course 11969). Furthermore, 3 bachelor thesis focus on Solar Decathlon. A general invitation to take part in the solar decathlon was issued to the entire campus. The students can work - across fields of study - with SDE. They can either choose to design an entire zero-energy house proposal as described above, or they can isolate a relevant part in their on going project and present it in the solar decathlon context, at a workshop March 19. These ideas, components, partial proposals – along with the dedicated and entire house projects will - be presented during the SDE Workshop on 19th March at DTU. Our strategy in this phase is to create a feeling of ownership for the solar decathlon in as many students as possible. There is already a core group of students involved in SD at DTU but the above-described process was initiated to invite and expand to maximum amount of students. The students were invited by small pep talks in the beginning of specially chosen courses and by electronic means and introduction meetings after 17 pm. The key faculty members at Team DTU have worked hard to promote the SDE in connection with lectures everywhere on campus. This provides a unique personal contact with course leaders and students and an feedback that constantly help us develop the project. The Workshop March 19 will motivate and inspire the involved students to create further interest in the SDE at DTU. Several national and international architectural and engineering personalities will be present at the workshop, where they will give tips and unique supervision to students’ ongoing solar decathlon relevant projects. During spring, there will - almost - every week be lectures with exciting outside experts. 2 such lectures was already held including, one on ‘design for disassembly’ and one by a PV manufacturer. These solar decathlon lectures are announced to students in the intranet group, DTU solar decathlon. It has currently 156 members. 3 Press Release - March 2 2011 Project discription In June, a three-week course is held where the involved students, meet can develop solar decathlon ideas and the project further. To get widespread interest in SDE off campus, Team DTU started collaboration with Grøn Vision (Green Vision), a student organization promoting sustainability and green technology. This collaboration is a great opportunity for knowledge sharing across universities and different areas of the country. Green vision has many activities during the summer period at music festivals in Denmark (Roskilde Festival E.g.) We created a Facebook page and a twitter profile. This allows all with interest in the project, to constantly stay updated with what’s happening in SDE and Team DTU. Our latest initiative is to promote the project at DTU Open House and student events. This provides an exclusive opportunity to inform future as well as current students about the opportunities and benefits that comes with SDE and Team DTU. The faculty members are working intensely on establishing sponsorship- agreements. PR material has been developed for this purpose and positive response have been obtained from 3 companies. At the same time foundations are approached by the top management at DTU (the Dean). This project has developed in a positive way so far, and the interest in SDE and Team DTU is increasing among the DTU course coordinators and students.. All related to Team DTU are looking forward with excitement and great anticipation to the upcoming weeks, culminating with our mid-term workshop March 19, and enjoying this great opportunity. 4 Press Release - March 2 2011 Collaborating institutions and sponsoring companies Currently we have a good dialogue with a number of Danish companies. So far, we have had positive responses from Velux, Nilan and Sunsil. 5 Press Release - March 2 2011 Project images Selected pictures from the SDE work at DTU 6 Press Release - March 2 2011 Project images Selected drawings and sketches 7 Press Release - March 2 2011 Project images 8 Press Release - March 2 2011 Project images 9 Press Release - March 2 2011 Group Photo 10
