Our 2014 Annual Report recognizes the broad support of the residents, organizations, and businesses for Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all of you for your generosity and that of the Otto Bremer Foundation challenge matches which allowed us to meet and exceed our 2014 $100,000 fundraising goal. The Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund (CBACF) advisory board assesses community needs, takes a leadership role in building a sustainable, healthy community, and develops endowment funds for grant making in the arts, education, the environment, economic development, and human services. CBACF is proud to support community efforts. We worked with our parent foundation, DSACF, to provide input to create a philanthropic protocol for community disaster preparedness. Mary Trettin chaired our second non-profit organization grant writing and fundraising workshop. Rick Geisen organized our second Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Ruth Goetz spearheaded our development efforts. Irene Blakely grew the membership of our board and Friends. We partnered with Washburn Community Education Foundation and Big Top Chautauqua who have established organizational endowment funds with CBACF. Our mission is to promote private giving for the public good and we hope this report will inspire your faith in our mission and will encourage your continued philanthropic investment. Back: Jeffrey Muse, Rick Geisen The CBACF mission is to promote private giving for the public good and our area’s future: n Attract and manage a growing endowment; n Provide service and resources for donors with philanthropic interests; n Identify community needs by making strategic grant awards to area non-profits. Mark Abeles Allison is County Administrator for the Bayfield County Board. Susan Anderson retired after a long career in notfor-profit management with a special interest in visual arts. She also served for several years as the director of the Target Foundation in Minneapolis. Irene Blakely (Vice Chair), an original board member, chairs the Leadership Committee. Former Washburn mayor and professor/administrator at Northland College, she is now vice president of the Alliance for Sustainability, member of the Memorial Medical Center Medical Ethics Board and the Washburn Heritage Association. Beta Bodin was a founding and long time board member of the Apostle Island Area Community Fund and has been active in the community. She operates the Brownstone Centre and Sweet Sailing in Bayfield and is President of Bodin’s Inc. Karen Crowell (Board Chair) has been with CBACF since its inception and is active with all facets of the board’s activities. Karen also serves on the Northern Lights Services board and is a member of the Chequamegon Universalist Unitarian Fellowship. Rick Geisen is a founding board member. Rick has led our signature fundraising event, the Turkey Trot Fundraiser. Rick is president of the local Bremer Bank. He serves on the Bayfield Economic Development Committee. Not pictured: Leslie Hamp, Shari Nelson Mackenzie Grutzner (summer intern) attends the University of Wisconsin, Madison, studying Community and Nonprofit Leadership and Spanish. She studied abroad in Spain and is working for a nonprofit in Madison. Ruth Goetz leads our development committee and the region in fundraising, having raised over $7 million dollars for area non profits. She is active with the Lake Superior Big Top, Friends of the Apostle Islands, Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and Ashland’s Ore Dock Committee. Leslie Hamp orchestrated PR efforts with Turkey Trot and the grant writing workshop. Master Coach, Licensed Passion Project Facilitator & author of Create the Life You Crave. We wish Leslie the best and thank her for her service. Cheryl Hicks, new board member, serves on the grant writing workshop committee. She retired from the Northland College Business Office and volunteers for the Elks Radio Auction to benefit the area’s Special Olympics program. Jeffrey Muse contributes greatly with his pulse on the region. Jeffrey is Director of the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Committee. He serves on the New Day Shelter Board and the WPR Board. Shari Nelson lives part time in Dallas and spends summers in Bayview, WI. She and her family are active with the Turkey Trot and hosted the 2014 Mostly Social at her gracious home. Mary Trettin leads our annual grant writing workshop and sits on the leadership committee. Mary is an associate at Northland College and enjoys many local outdoor amenities and all things Northland College. Anders Geisen, Madelaine Herder, Rick Geisen OUR BOARD AT WORK In January 2014, Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund held a grant making/fundraising workshop for over 75 nonprofits. Local grant writing expert, Sharon Stewart (at left), was the keynote speaker. Other presenters included: Ruth Goetz, Leslie Hamp, Chelsea Spreeman, Kevin Stranberg, Glenn Carlson and Dr. Darrell Robertson. Thanks to all! Recognizing the need for funding, in particularly with environmental nonprofits, CBACF held a luncheon with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Donn Waage and Eric Forward of the Central Partnership Office. CBACF is committed to funding grant projects in the arts, education, human services, economic development and the environment. Because of its leadership in addressing the Duluth 2012 flash flood. DSACF was selected as one of 17 community foundations from the Midwest to participate in a new philanthropic-based, disaster preparedness, response and recovery program: Philanthropic, Preparedness, Resiliency, and Emergency Partnership (PPREP). CBACF advisory board members worked with DSACF Philanthropic Officer, Keri Cavitt to implement a philanthropic disaster response for the Chequamegon Bay, both in the immediate aftermath and during long-term community rebuilding and resiliency. First place winners were Nile Merton and Alexis Griggs (facing page, upper right). We are grateful for sponsorship from Memorial Medical Center Physical Therapy Group and BMO Harris Bank, and the talented Lissa Fleming of Silverwaves for creating and donating medals. CBACF raised over $2500 and the amount was matched 1:1 by the Otto Bremer Foundation for our Program Services Fund. The Karl & Shari Nelson Legacy Circle recognizes estate plan provisions Kim & Derek Ogle which leave a planned gift legacy: Petra Holter; Cindy Otto Bremer Foundation Dillenschneider and Jason Maloney; and Michael Pace Woods Foundation Crowell and Karen Ruedi Crowell. Organizational Beth & Steve Probst Endowment Funds are created by or on behalf of Charles & Arlene a nonprofit to gain visibility for the organization and Simonian Family Trust its endowment. Washburn Community Education John & Sharon Stewart Foundation Fund facilitates educational excellence for Mary Trettin Washburn School District students. Lake Superior Big & Michael Miller Top Chautauqua Blue Canvas Fund provides funds Jack & Mary Wichita for periodic replacement of the Big Top Chautauqua United Way of Wisconsin tent. Acorn Funds are a commitment to contribute Washburn Chamber of Commerce at least $10,000 (minimum gift of $1,000/year), up to Chequamegon Bay a 10-year period. The Fund grows in the Unrestricted Turkey Trot Endowment or can be placed in an established 120+ runners Organizational Endowment. Our Unrestricted Fund Washburn Ranger supports grant-funded projects in Washburn, Ashland District Social Club and Bad River addressing regional needs now and *2014 Donors are in bold responds to change.
