Septentrion - Bayfield School District
“News of the North” Published by the Bayfield High School P.O. Box 5001 Bayfield, WI 54814 Septentrion Forensics: State Bound By: Camille Bohnert The district competition for forensics held on March 15th was a success. District was hosted by Ashland this year and all of the Bayfield students got scores high enough to move on to the state level. The forensics kids headed down to Madison on Friday, April 18th for the competition on April 19th. At the state level, each piece is read only one time before a single judge. No one cracked under that intense pressure, and students cam home with bronze, silver, or gold metals. Before leaving fo the competition senior Forrest Howk said, “I think we’ll do really well” He was right. The state trip is always a blast for forensics participants. Aside from the long drive, the trip is designed for maximum fun. Getting the gold + a day spent on state street + dinner at Pedro’s + Rocky Rococo’s pizza = the recipe for maximum fun. Not to mention the joys of spending a weekend with Mrs. Simon and Ms. Ward. Congratulations to all participants. Gold Medals: Zach Boutin, Joe DePerry, Rita Carlson, Peter Atkins, Kyle Newago Silver Medals: Forrest Howk, Malia North, Steven Bresette, Camille Bohnert, Mike Montano, Nadine Teisberg, Gena Gephart, Travis Thier, Stephanie LaPointe, Jesse Flores Bronze Medals: Mary Thomas, Jordan Barningham-Jeffords, Jared Blanche, Billy Gordon, Justine Ringberg, Alison Erickson, Lori Barningham Small Bronze Medals: Tiffanie Hanson, Ashley Duffy, Lena Ludwig, Sasheen Goslin, Michael Wynn April 2008 Rube Goldberg: Second to One P. Atkins It was a long, bumpy bus ride to West Lafayette, Indiana for Mr. Erickson’s Advanced Science class. On Friday, April 4, they traveled to Purdue University for the High School and College National Rube Goldberg competition. High schools and college teams from around the country gathered to show off their complex burger assembly machines. The college competition was held in the morning, Purdue University came in first with a machine that assembled a hamburger in over 100 steps. Bayfield Rube Goldberg team member Weston Their said, “I was a little disappointed with functionality of the college machines. I thought the level of workmanship of the high school machines was equal to that of the college machines, I wasn’t that impressed.” Story continued on page 2 Rube Goldberg Continued Eight high school teams from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan made the journey to West Lafayette for the national competition after placing at the top of their respective regionals. Teams ran their machines three times for judges, but were able to void one run before it was complete. Bayfield’s machine ran with one human intervention in the first round. The team decided to void their second run that also would have had one intervention. The gamble paid off, the third run was perfect. After much deliberation, the panel of judges declared Bayfield the winner of second place and the owner of a large, shiny trophy. On the way back, they stopped in Milwaukee to catch a Brewers game. Milwaukee completed their sweep of San Francisco with a 7-0 win. Ben Sheets suffocated the Giants, pitching a 4-hit complete game shutout, striking out eight. On the offensive end, Ryan Braun was 3-5 with a homerun. Gabe Kapler also added a solo shot. It will be a good season. The Beatles Shoot for the Stars By Forrest Howk The Beatles are on their way to the North Star. NASA broadcasted the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe” literally across the universe to the star Polaris, otherwise known as the North Star. The first beaming of a radio song celebrates the 40th anniversary of the song and the 45th anniversary of NASA’s Deep Space Network. The song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney will be traveling the speed of light and will still take 431 years to reach the star Polaris. That’s because Polaris is 2.5 quadrillion miles away from Earth. To broadcast the song, NASA loaded an MP3 of the song and transmitted it digitally from its high powered antennae located in Madrid, Spain. But if someone wanted to jam out to the Beatles on Polaris they would need antenna and a receiver to convert it back to music, the same way people receive satellite television. When asked about the transmitting of the song Paul McCartney said, “Send my love to the aliens.” What did you do over spring break? Z. Boutin The Bayfield County Health Department and the Bayfield School are pleased to offer your child FREE DENTAL SERVICES. We will be at Bayfield School May 5th – May 7th providing dental screenings, sealants and fluoride varnishes for 2nd and 6th graders. Please make sure your child has received and filled out the forms sent home from the school to receive these free services. Every child who participates has a chance to win a FREE IPOD donated by Apostle Island Realty, Bayfield, WI and Omer Nelson Electric, Ashland, WI. Freshman, Faron B.: Played basketball Junior Jesse F.: Went skiing Sophomore Steven B.: Went to see his brother Senior Rita C.: Went to Montana to ski Ben Sheets is Back By John Burg Ben Sheets, pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, has found the right arm slot. This is great news for all Brewers fans. He found it when he was throwing against a wall. If Sheets can return to his 2004 form when he should have won the Cy Young, the Brewers will make the playoffs. Ben Sheets has a rocket arm that can chuck a mid to upper nineties four seam fastball and a crazy 12 to 6 curve with a plus change. On opening day against the Chicago Cubs, he went 6.1 innings while giving up two hits and two walks with no runs and 7 strikeouts. After all that, he didn’t even get the decision. Where are YOU working this summer? Lacie Defoe: Winfield Inn Weston Thier: Winneboujou Club Joe DePerry: Living Adventures Malia North: Motion to Go and The Pub Eugene Gokee Rindal: Rec Center Michael Wynn: The coffee shop downtown Iditarod Evan Erickson: Grampa Tony’s and South End Lawn Care Josi Montano: The Inn on Madeline Island Forrest Howk: Madeline Island Ferry Line Emily Nourse: Portside Restaurant Harrison Nelson: Grampa Tony’s by Weston Thier Alaska this time of year may seem to many of us as nothing more than a really long ways away. The reality is that with the winter we’ve had this year to date, we can get a feel for what it would be like to live in the 49th state and experience the activities that they have up there. Arguably the largest of these activities is dogsledding, which is a more competitive sport than many think. The biggest dogsled race in the world is the Alaskan Iditarod. The winner of this year’s race was Lance Mackey, who won a thriller vs. Jeff King, using some late trickery to steal the crown. At the final checkpoint, Mackey pretended to take a short nap, triggering a break from King. While King was resting, Mackey broke out on the trail for the lead and never looked back. An exciting finish to a race and sport that is often overlooked but has a major impact to the area with everything from tourism to competitions. Pakistani Government Sends World Wide Web into Confusion By: Forrest Howk Last Sunday, the majority of the world’s internet users lost access to YouTube for several hours after an attempt by the Pakistani government to block use of the popular website. The attempt to block YouTube was executed by the Pakistani government because of the anti-Islamic messages and movies on the video sharing site, which is owned by Google Inc. The outage highlighted yet another of the Internet’s vulnerabilities, coming less than a month after broken cables on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea caused Egypt to go offline and partial loss of the web from Middle East to India. After these serious flaws with the Internet have been uncovered, I think that the school should seriously rethink how strictly they are regulating the Internet. I am no computer whiz, but what if the schools blocking somehow became the domino that started a chain reaction bringing down the web all around the United States? I’m sure the school would not want that kind of publicity. Washburn’s Woes P. Atkins On April first, Washburn voters overwhelmingly rejected the recurring $900,000 referendum for the Washburn School District. This is no joking matter for the School District who needs the extra tax money to cover operational costs. If the referendum had passed, Washburn taxpayers would have had to pay an extra $2.88 per thousand dollars of property value. Though enrollment is declining, the spending is staying steady. With Washburn’s current spending, the district will become bankrupt in 2010 without additional funding. The District may be forced to dissolve or consolidate in the next couple years. The other area School Districts, namely Bayfield and Ashland, would have to absorb their students. Now the school board is looking into why the referendum failed. They will probably propose a revised referendum. Perhaps taxpayers would be more exceptive of a nonrecurring referendum. The school board is also trying to figure out ways to decrease spending, which might mean cutting staff and certain programs. Baseball Schedule Lardy Lunches P. Atkins Obesity is a growing problem. More than 72 million Americans are considered obese. Food choices and eating habits account for much of the weight gain. Twenty-three percent of students 10 to 17 are obese. School lunches have a huge influence what kids eat, some school lunch programs are good while others are just plain greasy. Bayfield’s lunch program is so-so health wise. Electrathon Sponsors Some of the food is prepared from scratch, but most of it By . Joe Newago & Shawn Hanson is canned, packaged, or already prepared. It is possible The Bayfield electrathon team is looking to eat a balanced and somewhat healthy lunch, but that for sponsors to get money to fix the cars and go to is up to the students. The other day we had chicken races to try to regain the grand championship title. nuggets, hash browns, carrot sticks, and milk. Bread, We also had to purchase new helmets and race butter and peanut butter are also always an option. Some communication systems to keep in contact with the students took the carrot sticks, but even fewer actually drivers which is leaving the team low on money to ate theirs. Five servings per day of fruit and vegetables go to the races. Sponsors will have a vinyl decal are recommended, but for many students it was just put on our trailer and the cars. Any donations are the fatty nuggets and hash browns. It would be a nice greatly appreciated by the team. Please contact Dave improvement to include a salad bar each day so students Doering at Bayfield High School. It is scientifically proven that people with a proper body mass index are happier, healthier, and live longer. Eat your fruits and vegetables, watch your portion size, and make sure you dab off that extra grease by Derrick Crozier with your napkin. This year’s Final Four by Weston Thier ended up being UCLA, It’s hard to imagine, looking out over the water that lies between Bayfield and Kansas, UNC, and LaPointe, that only a couple of short weeks ago there were cars driving across the ice. Memphis. Each one was also a number one While free transportation in your own vehicle is an easy and enjoyable way to reach the island, all good things must come to an end. In the case of the ice road, “the end” seed, which has never happened in Final Four meant the first ferry run of the year. Many people rely on the ice patterns of winter on the big lake. In winter, history. Kansas played islanders are not dependant on ferry schedules and the island seems like just another UNC and crushed accessible place to travel to. For kids living on the island and going to school in Baythem with a 84-66 win. Memphis took on field, the ice road makes it possible for them to stay later at extra curricular activities or events and is a useful commodity while it lasts. UCLA and won So although many of us are anxious for spring to come and the rain and sun 78-63. It ended to melt our plentiful snow, we hold back the tears and say farewell to one of our best up being Memphis winter friends. Until next winter, enjoy the ferry. and Kansas for the Championship. Memphis was favored to win by lots of people in Bayfield, but that didn’t happen. Kansas ended up winning in over time 75-68. Boutin This year’s All Conference team was full of talented basketball players. Bayfield was able to contribute to the team with Matt Gordon as All Conference and DJ Bressler as Honorable Mention. Matt was chosen for his 3-point threat. In conference play he shot 167 three’s and made 71, the most in the conference. This was DJ’s second consecutive season as Honorable Mention. He was a great defensive man and a huge scoring threat. Other schools that contributed to the team were Mellen, Hurley, Solon Springs, Mercer and Washburn. Mellen put three players on the team with repeats Sam Pearson, Jared Neibauer and new comer Tim Marincel. This is Sam’s third consecutive season on the team. Hurley added two with repeat Daulton Levra and new comer Michael Sebjl. Statistically, Daulton was the biggest scoring threat in the conference. Washburn also added two with Kyle Spurlock and Tyler Olson. Mercer added Kelly Ervin and Solon Springs added Ryan Slivensky. Is It Spring or Winter? By: Forrest Howk I am not sure whether the weather this year could be called spring. It seems as if every week brings a new surprise. I thought we were finally leaving winter behind us when the potential snow storm dumped 20 inches of snow in northern Minnesota and we were enjoying 40 and 50 degree weather. We had it made, the baseball field and the soccer field were on the way to being clear of snow and the temperature was steadily rising. Then El Nino said no to baseball in northern Wisconsin. We got a storm that stretched from Colorado to Maine and bent back to us dumping 12 inches of snow. I personally am very upset with the roller coaster type weather we are having so far. All I want to do is enjoy my senior year and play baseball. So this is an official warning to El Nino, if we receive any more snow or not melt off the baseball field, I will personally use as much fossil fuels and give off as much green house gasses as possible. I will drive my car more, leave the lights on and breathe more. So beware El Nino, beware. Good Thyme Bistro burns down By: Camille Bohnert The Good Thyme Bistro in Washburn was destroyed by a fire this march. On Tuesday March 18th people crowded around as fire fighters tried to control the flames. Renee Holman, the owner, was on vacation in Mexico at the time of the fire. “The restaurant was closed this week for cleaning and maintenance,” said Gary Holman, Renee’s father. The cause of the fire is unknown but it was found to have originated in the kitchen. The fire was called in just after five o’clock that evening. Members of Ashland, Mason, and Bayfield fire departments responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished but sadly, the Good Thyme was a total loss. The crews worked hard to contain it and the surrounding businesses suffered very little damage. The community has of course experienced a horrendous loss, the Good Thyme restaurant was a favorite business of everyones. “I had a good time at the Good Thyme” said Peter Atkins, a devastated customer. Bayfield students will miss the business. I know that plenty of students not only ate at the restaurant but bought their sandwiches too. Earth Day By: Derrick Crozier Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson to put the state of our environment in the limelight. He wanted to draw attention to the idea of helping our Mother Earth. The idea was first introduced in 1962 but didn’t really kick off until 1969. On Earth Day, Jim Ramsdel, and his Our Shared Planet program, is coming to our school. He will be presenting three programs to our students. You can visit his website oursharedplanet.org to learn more about his presentation. Jim will be staying for two days at our school; on the second day he will be with the high school students. Funds for his two-day visit have been provided by the Bayfield Community Education Foundation. Some ways all students can get involved is to pick up litter, carpool or walk, recycle, plant a tree, shut down computers or other appliances when not using them, and use florescent bulbs (they use 75% less energy). Law Day D. Peterson On Wednesday April 2nd, Mr. Hay took seven sophomores to the Bayfield County Courthouse to take part in “Law Day.” The students included Ashley Duffy, Erik Nelson, Kasie Gokee, Michael Wynn, Steven Bresette, Travis Their and Richard Topping. In addition to our students Ashland, Washburn, South Shore, and Drummond schools had students as well. The students witnessed a “mock” trial. Although none of the Bayfield students took part in the actual trial, they all expressed their opinions. The students also got information about “Teen Court” and how they could join, if they where interested. “Teen Court” is when teens are the jury and they recommend what happened to the child that got in to trouble. Kasie Gokee said, “It was fun, and I liked eating the hamburgers,” Erik Nelson added, “Yeah, I would participate again if asked.” Overall the students all had a great time. All of them walked away with more information about the judicial system. Giving Blood By: Derrick Crozier Bayfield High School will be having a blood drive on Wednesday, May 14. If you are planning on giving blood there are few things you should probably know. To donate blood you need to be in good health, at least 17 years old, at least 110 pounds, and have not donated blood in the last 56 days. Some other good tips to know when donating blood are… 1. drink lots of water 2. eat a good breakfast with lots of protein 3. bring photo ID unless you a blood card 4. you should know information for the test such as recent vacations, tattoos, piercing, etc. Horoscopes aries You’ll be focused on getting your message across to other people as the moon makes its way to Gemini today. With triple trios, there are three parts: First sopranos, second sopranos and altos. First sopranos were Lori, Skarlette and Alex Butterfield. Second sopranos were Andrea, Britany and Sasheen, and the altos were Gena and Justine. We performed two songs from the piece Three Mountain Ballads and they were by Alex Butterfield On Saturday, April 5th, students from Bayfield High School and Bayfield Middle School rode all the way to Solon Springs to compete in “Solo Ensemble.” Students choose whether they wanted to do vocal solos, triple trios, or duets or play instruments. Nine students from each middle school and high school competed in solo ensemble, singing in a triple trio, eight more students did solos and two students played the flute. The song they sang was “All Through the Night” by Welsh Tone. With the performing of solos, there are different classes of solos that differ on difficulty. Class A solos are commonly the most difficult, Class B are medium difficulty and Class C are the easiest. Students who perform a class A solo are eligible to go to state, but the others who performed class B or C are not. Students who sang class A solos are Andrea Peterson, Lori Barningham, Gena Gephart, and Justine Ringburg. In order to advance to state, they needed to get a star one. Andrea sang her solo in German and it was titled “Bist du bei mir” by J.S. Bach. Gena’s solo was Italian and it was titled “Gia il sole del Gange” by Alessandro Scarlatti. Lori solo was in Italian also, and it was titled “Bel Piacere” by G.F. Handel. The Song “If Music Be the Food of Love” was sung by Justine. Two students sang Class B solos, and they were Shania leask, who sang “My Lord What a Morning.” And Amanda Gary who sang “The Water is Wide.” And Alex Butterfield sang “Caro mio ben”, which was Italian by Giuseppe Giordani. Class C soloists were Marita Thier and Sophie Howk who did a flute duet. Emma Dalzell and Ali Gephart sang a duet called “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” Two students from Bayfield are on their way to state for their solos. They are Lori Barningham and Gena Gephart. Soria There were many upsets in this year’s March madness tournament. The outcome was also very upsetting for many people. Kansas and Memphis are the two teams who came out on top of the bracket. Kansas had to play North Carolina to make it to the end, and they were planning on putting the game away early with a 40-12 lead in the first half. At the end of the game North Carolina had one of the greatest comebacks but ended up losing 8466. Memphis had to play UCLA in order to make it to the end. Memphis overcame UCLA at the end with a score of 78-63. People say that because Memphis has won 38 games and only lost one, they deserve to win a championship. Kansas defeated Memphis 75-68 for the NCAA national men’s basketball title championship. It was one of the most rare match ups where both were favorites. This was a upset because of the Memphis’s Grizzlies almost perfect record of 38-1 through the season. Kansas came out stronger and with more power to win. The tournament has come to a end, and Kansas is now national college basketball champions. Firemen’s Brunch Z. Boutin Every year right around the start of spring the Bayfield Fire Department has a brunch at the Northern Edge Bar and Restaurant. It’s a buffet style breakfast with eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, fruit, muffin and coffee or juice. Once you’ve decided what you want to eat you’re able to sit anywhere you want and talk to other people while you eat. There are also prizes that people of all ages can win. There’s a 50/50 raffle at the register and this year there were two big prizes. They were a grill and a 12 gauge shot gun. Most of the department helps out and a lot of their family members help as well. They work in the kitchen, sell raffles or clean the tables after people are done eating. The turn out was good this year despite it being a couple of weeks earlier than it normally is. Brewers By John Burg The Brewers are great. The so called experts are expecting them to finish third in the division behind the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds. The Cincinnati Reds are good, I’ll give them that, but to place them ahead of the Brewers, crazy. I think the Cubs will have a good year and maybe even challenge the Brewers for the NL Central but I don’t see a team with Lou Pinella as manager going anywhere for real. The Cubs, the Reds, and the Brewers are the only three teams in the NL Central worth mentioning so I think that we’ll be seeing the Brewers in October. Tomorrow’s Techs By. Joseph Newago Hybrid auto technology is changing the way people train for repair careers. The new hybrid cars get the attention of people who want great gas mileage and cleaner air, but with this new technology there comes more training for people who are looking to get into the auto repair industry. For example, to work on a car you have to understand how it works and to do that now takes training. Because everything is electronic and computerized not like older cars when just about anything could be fixed yourself, you have to take it into a shop to get fixed. This costs you more money because they have to be trained in all the new technology. Bayfield takes first in Washburn 3X3 By. M.Gordon On April 13 2008 the Washburn school district hosted a 3 on 3 tournament with the other schools in the area like Ashland, Bayfield, Odanah, Drummond, and Washburn. The Bayfield team did really good because we won the championship game and took first place overall. The players that played for Bayfield was Matt Gordon, Zach Boutin, DJ Bressler, and Kurtis Gordon, Bayfield won their first game easily by a score of 18-2, then we had to play Washburn it was an intense game because we were losing most of the game and then came back and won. The last game Bayfield played was against Drummond in the championship which Bayfield smoked them by a score of 18-8. The players received t-shirts for first place Global Warming By John Burg Global warming is currently on the top of the list of environmentalists everywhere. It is caused by the emission of green house gases that are trapped in our atmosphere. When the sun enters the atmosphere it some of its warmth are absorbed by the earth while some of it bounces off and leaves our atmosphere. When the atmosphere is full of green house gases it traps the heat like a green house, hence its name, and the temperature rises changing the climate. Also the polar ice caps melt and change the temperature and the salinity of the water. This changes the currents of the ocean which also causes changes to the weather patterns. So, we need to start thinking about changes we can make. Turn out your lights when you leave the room, car pool, plant a tree. Plant a tree for the love of all that is holy. It is a serious problem and we need to start trying to change this before things get too bad. 3rd Quarter Honor Roll Grade 12 High Honors Grade 10 High Honors Grade 12 Honors Grade 10 Honors Grade 11 High Honors Grade 9 High Honors Grade 11 Honors Grade 9 Honors Peter Atkins Camille Bohnert Zach Boutin Rita Carlson Alison Erickson Forrest Howk Malia North Christine Silvernail Weston Thier Kahlil Williams John Burg Charlene Ludwig Allyssa Gordon Britany Bonney Lacie DeFoe Joseph DePerry Michael Montano Justine Ringberg Jared Blanche Evan Erickson Jesse Flores William Gordon Jasmine Montano Andrea Peterson Elvira Salido-Moreno William Soulier Mary Thomas Steven Bresette Ashley Duffy Genevieve Gephart Eugene Gokee-Rindal Gabriella Gordon Kasie Gokee Stephanie LaPointe Erik Nelson Nadine Teisberg Richard Topping Kayla Gordon Kristi Holmes Ethan Hyde Kyle Newago Travis Their Ian Atkins Taylor Gurnoe David Pratt A-Rodge: “One Crazy QuizBowler” by Weston Thier Alan Rogers, commonly know as “A-Rodge” among his many admirers, has put together quite the brainiac dynasty over his reign at Bayfield High School. In case you don’t know, Rogers is the current Bayfield Quiz Bowl Coach. Although this dynasty has not always been a winning one, A-Rodge is not one to be let down. It is his intense coaching behavior and obsession with trivial perfection that picks his team up in the bleakest of circumstances and sets him apart from other quiz bowl coaches. In their latest quiz bowl tournament in Gogebic, Rogers and his team fought for every question and never backed down, the mark of a true competitor. Many adjectives have been used in describing the aura of Rogers. Team captain Forrest Howk calls him “One crazy quiz bowler.” You need only watch Rogers step onto the quiz bowl turf to see his eyes go ablaze with the fury of his competitive nature. Watch out, area quiz bowl teams. With Rogers at the helm, Bayfield Quiz Bowl could turn into a serious quiz bowl threat in the near future.
