From Left to right: Bo Williams (Therapist), Suzi Suarez (Marketing/Business Development), Barbara McCauley (Office Coordinator), Laura Lang (Therapist Assistant), Richard Vicory (Therapist) Page 2 Exclusive Interview: What does Dr. Vicory do when he is not a Physical Therapist? Dr. Vicory took a few moments out of his busy schedule to talk to us about what he enjoys doing when he is not a physical therapist. We learned that one of his favorite sports is professional ice hockey. Enjoy reading the interview below! How long have you been interested in professional ice hockey? Since I was about 14. My first experience was watching a Georgia Tech hockey game when my brother was a student there. I had never even been to an ice rink (Georgia is not a big hockey state). I watched the players move in and out handling a tiny black puck. The action and intensity was addicting. Later I would watch the old Atlanta Hawks on TV whenever I could. What (or who) got you interested in the sport? My brother was my first exposure. I later had an internship in Chicago and went to a Blackhawks Sports Bar. Watching the game with hard core fans brought the excitement of the game back. What is your favorite team (or teams) and why? Tough question! My favorite team would have to be the Tampa Bay Lightning. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the players and alumni. The players are always great and would always take time to chat with the fans. My second favorite is our Orlando Solar Bears. I am a diehard season ticket holder and try not to miss a game. Our boys from home are outstanding. What is it that you like best about the sport? Dr. Vicory with Scott Tanski of the Orlando Solar Bears Speed and skill. Hockey is a very fast sport that requires significant skill. Imagine moving on two blades on ice using a stick to move a coaster down the ice. If you can do that you are definitely doing well. Now add the big guy trying to get the puck away and knock you down. That’s hockey! Do any of your family members (or friends) share your enthusiasm for the sport? My son Jack is a big fan. We share time together watching the games and even spend time on the ice. What is the most memorable moment (or moments) that you have experienced in attending any of the games (or pre-game events)? My most memorable moment was at a Tampa bay Lightning game. Marty St. Louis was finishing an interview with Fox Sports. He stopped to sign some autographs and a couple of drunk guys pushed themselves to the front. Security rushed him back and my son was very disappointed since he had been patiently waiting. A gentleman from security walked up and asked what my son was going to have signed. I showed him the hockey puck and he asked if he could borrow it. I watched the security guy walk into a doorway and hand the puck to Mr. St. Louis. He signed it and pointed at my son. I told my son to look and Mr. St. Louis waved at him. The security guy brought the puck to my son and said that Mr. St. Louis signed it for him. My son was very excited and had a huge grin for the rest of the night. Dr. Vicory with the Stanley cup In your experience, have you seen a lot of hockey players develop injuries that would require physical therapy? Absolutely! The level of contact and speed that occur in a hockey game is intense. Even with protective gear, injuries from puck strikes to checking can leave a player injured. Injuries such as a traumatic brain injury, fractures, muscle tears, ligament injuries, and spinal injuries happen and require intervention.
