VHS Hosts Foreign Exchange Student
TheTalon
Volume8,Issue1
Mikael Olszowy, is our new foreign exchange student. Mikael
is a 16 year old from Sweden. His parents are Polish and he would
prefer to say he is Polish rather than Swedish.
Mikael said he was inspired to come to America because he
wanted to learn the language. He first learned of this exchange
program two years ago. It was then that his cousin came to the
United States with this particular program.
Mikael says that he feels really good about his host family. He is
living with the Stachowiak’s. He says the best part about being here
in America is the school, the people, and going 4-wheeler riding.
His favorite thing to do is go out with his friends.
While I was interviewing Mikael, he started to tell me about the
differences in America and Sweden. There are, of course, many
different aspects of life in his country, but Mikael really hit on the
language being different, as well as, the food. He was particularly
interested in the amount of fast food we have and different types of
food. Mikeal said, “Potato chips and nachos are strictly for a snack
and they would never be eaten with any of our meals.”
Another aspect that is different for Mikael is school. He said,
“School here in America, is three times easier than school in Sweden.”
He also said that you don’t have to carry the planners at his school,
and that was very different for him. They start school at 8 o’clock in
the morning and they finish at 5 o’clock. Mikael also told me that it
is not required to go to school. They can just go when they have a
test. If they receive a good grade on their test, they receive a good
grade for the class.
Mikael’s school does not have any activities or sports. However,
they do have soccer, hockey and basketball in Sweden. Mikael
described soccer to me as “football.”
Mikeal was in the United States for the recent attack on America.
He stated, “I found it very scary.” He also said that it scared him
when the flights were suspended, because if for some reason he
needed to get back to Sweden there would be no way to get there.
However, Mikael thinks the chaos in our country will stop soon.

As Americans, we may not
be the most accepting of foreign
inluences in our immediate media. Though the film adaptation
of his second book High Fidelity
wasn’t exactly a box ofice smash.
Nick Hornby is slowly becoming
a household name (apartmenthold perhaps?), for members of
the more contemporary, exceedingly realistic, and approachingly
sarcastic mindset. Hornby’s four
previous titles have made him a
large cult following in Britain, and
the like and have propelled him into
quasi-stardom.
His most recent release is a
joint venture times six. Speaking
With the Angel, a virtual who’s
who of contemporary literary
writers, is an anthology that bristles with the crackly talent and
conidence of both the newly
and the already fabulous.
Included are Hornby himself,
Melissa Bank, Dave Eggers,
Helen Fielding, Zadie Smith,
and veteran favorites Roddy
Doyle, and Irvine Welsh.
Every story is told in the irst
person, and the voices are consistent, fresh, and particular.
Though some tales veer toward
the trendy side of topical, each
one surprises and entertains.
E g g e r s ’s A f t e r I Wa s
Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned is told by a pit
bull whose anthropomorphized
sensibilities and phraseology
are quite lovely.
Patrick Marber treads on
familiar turf in Peter Shelley, a
coming-of-age story told in a
blend of irreverence and awe
that seems new.
In Last Requests, Giles
Smith imagines some moments in the career of a Death
Row chef who does her best to
satisfy the inmates’ inal culinary
wants.
Roddy Doyle further ennobles
his reputation with The Slave, in
which an anxious, literate, working-class father suffers a mid-life
reckoning with a large dead rat
in his kitchen. None of these
12 stories disappoints.
The cover
is an imaginative one featuring
painted doll-like ceramic busts of
the contributors. The best reason
to buy? A portion of the proits will
go to TreeHouse, a British school
for autistic children.
