Donation given to family from Louisiana
By Julie Farmer
Vienna High School senior Danielle O’Connell and
her family were presented
with a check for $400 from
VHS Principal Mrs. Faye
Mize.
The money was given to the
O’Connell family to help
them buy some of the items
they lost in Hurricane
Katrina. Because they
were only able to bring so
much with them, the
O’Connell family is lacking
some of the major needs to
live their day-to-day lives.
The money was collected through a VHS
fundraiser to help those who
have been hurt by Hurricane
Katrina.
Mrs. Mize was pleased
to give the donation.
“Through the givingness of
the students and staff, we
are able to provide a donation to the O’Connell family. Our hearts go out to all
the families affected by Hurricane Katrina.”
Danielle and her family
lets students make friends
with different people with
different backgrounds.
The Leadership Team at
Vienna High School is helping get the school and students ready for the Mix It Up
challenge. The group includes Isaiah Cornelius, Lori
Hannan, Aaron Chamness,
Haley Huff, and Credence
Mott. The sponsors for the
team are Mrs. Holhubner
and Mr. Fairless.
Lori Hannan is part of
the VHS Leadership team
and is a junior at VHS. “I
think the Mix It Up challenge
is a great idea. It will allow
students who don’t normally

new people. I am really ex-

Empire after the hurricane to
find what was left of her
home, only to find they had
nothing to return to.

O’Connell’s lost everything
they had left in Empire.
VHS senior Danielle O’Connell and her family received a check, presented by principal Faye
Mize, for $400.00 from Vienna High School, and Danielle personally received a check for
$100.00. The donation is part of the money collected by VHS students and staff to aid victims of
Hurricane Katrina. The O’Connell’s home was completely destroyed in the storm.
VHS “Brings Down the Walls”
By Julie Farmer
Vienna High School will
be participating in the Challenge to “Mix it Up” on November 15. The slogan for
the challenge is “Bringing
Down the Walls.”
Mix it Up is a program
whose goal is to break stereotypes in high schools
across America. On Nov.
15 students will be “mixing
it up” by sitting next to
someone new at lunch.
The program divides
students from their normal
sitting areas at lunch, into
different groups. By participating in this activity students will be able to get acquainted with other students
they may not be friends with.

By Teena Harms
As part of the hurricane relief
effort here at VHS, students came
together to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. With
staff and students working together,
VHS raised a total of $3,781.90.
The first place winner was Mrs.
Cochran’s class. They brought in
$281.50 throughout the week. Second place went to Mr. Harner’s
class, with a total of $274.50 for
the week.
Brian Kramp, of Mr. Harner’s
second block American Government class, commented, “It is nice
to see my peers dig deep to help
others, and to care so much that
they give all they have for people in
need.”
Mrs. Cochran said, “My class
showed great initiative, because
they always brought and collected
money without my prompting. It
feels great that they showed so much
generosity, not to mention beating
Mr. Harner’s class.”
Mrs. Cochran’s Spanish II class raised the most money for the hurricane victims, with $281.50. Pictured above first row:

Angel Avery Wins FCCLA raffle
Civil Air Patrol
seeking recruits
Submitted by Dakin Rosenthal
An open letter to VHS students...
Hello, this is Dakin Storm
Rosenthal, a member of the
Civil Air Patrol
Metropolis Composite Squadron.
We are looking for new
cadets (which means you) to
join us in defending our
homeland and keeping our
skies safe.
We perform S.A.R.
(Search and Rescue Tasks)
for the U.S. Air Force.
We are ranked 28th in
the state. Though our squadron is small, it has more opportunities and more flight
time for the cadets, which is
pretty good considering, Chicago has 75 squadron alone.
We have award and
scholarship programs that are
provided through national
competitions. Transportation
is provided to national events
only.
All that we ask from you
is that you show up to our
meetings. There are three
things that come first, church,
family, and school.
There are also other opportunities provided from
CAP; for instance, learning
how to fly, wearing Air Force
uniforms, Color Guard,
Ranking, and leadership of
the squadrons.
For more information
about the Metropolis Composite Squadron, see me, or
contact our commander,
Gregory Krempasky at

VHS FFA takes second in Tractor Jr. Class Officers attend Leadership
Driving Contest at Vienna City Park Development Conference
Submitted by Haley Huff
The Vienna FFA hosted the
section 25 Tractor Driving Contest
on Tuesday, October 4th, at the
Vienna City Park. Twelve schools
participated in the contest from
across Section 25.
Tractor driving tests each
contestant’s safety knowledge and
the ability to back a trailer through
a course that’s 40 feet long and
only eight inches wider than the
trailer. Driving and parking skills
are also tested. A judge tests the
driver’s ability to drive and control
the way the driver handles the
tractor and trailer.
David Yandell and Robby
Trigg drove for Vienna. David
had a score of 195 and Robby
Trigg had a score of 244. Overall,
David placed 4th and Robby placed
9th. Vienna had a team score of
439, which gave them 2nd place, as
a team, in the contest. The alternates
in this year’s contest were Cory
Ross and Travis Stroud.
The Vienna FFA also
participated in the Section 25 landuse contest (soil judging) on
September 20th, 2005, at Carmi,
Illinois. Robby Trigg, Kassie Ross,
David Yandell, Haley Huff, and
Travis Stroud were members that
participated. Members judge 5 pits
of soil and determine things such as
soil erosion, water permeability, soil
structure, texture, and also figure
percentage slope.

Submitted by Isaiah Cornelius
Six students from the Junior
class were chosen to go to the
leadership ethics workshop. They
were: Lori Hannan, Haley Huff,
Kassie Ross, Aaron Chamness,
Credence Mott, and Isaiah
Cornelius.
They
were
accompanied by Mr. Fairless,
Mrs. Holhubner, and Dr. Trover.
There were three days to the
workshop, and each one was a
fun learning experience.
The first was a day for getting
to know other students from other
schools. Each of the schools was
paired with another. The students

them and introduced them. Not only
did the students do this, but the
teachers did as well. After the
students were introduced and they
learned about other schools’ sizes and
locations, there was a scavenger hunt.
Students were put on teams with
people from other schools. The first
day of the workshop was a team
building day.
The second day was on a more
serious level. It was started off by
learning about the Three Moral

VHS Fall baseball season in the books
Submitted by David Hill
The Vienna Eagles finished up
the fall baseball season with a 9-4
record. The Eagles ended the fall
season tied for first place with the
Shawnee Redskins, who the Eagles
defeated in August.
The Eagles only Conference
loss was to Cobden. The Eagles
were defeated 6-4 in the Confer-
ence Tournament semifinals by the
eventual Conference Tournament
champions, the Goreville Blackcats.
The Eagles won 3rd place in the
Carrier Mills Inivitational Tournament in September. A 9-4 record is
the best fall finish that the Eagles have
enjoyed in the last three years.
Leading the Conference, going
into the spring season is another preseason goal that the Eagles were
able to successfully accomplish.
The Eagles had four pitchers that
won two games each: Garrett Davis,
Brett Snider, Clayton Spurlock, and
Derek Trovillion.
The Eagles unsuccessful bid to
win the Conference Tournament will
leave a sour taste in their mouths all
winter long.
The Eagles baseball players are
looking forward to a busy spring
season with the maximum of 35
games already scheduled. The
Eagles have plenty of work to do this
off-season to prepare for the spring.

Marching Eagles starts off the season
Former VHS

By Brandy Morgan
It’s only the beginning of the year,
but the VHS Marching Eagles have
been very busy. The VHS Band and
Flag Corps have been marching in
parades for almost every Saturday
for the past two months. Though it
has been hard work at the parades
and even in the classroom, the band
members have not been showing
any signs of stress.
Full of fun and excitement, the
Marching Eagles keep the attention
of the crowds by not only playing
their own songs along with classic
favorites, but also by keeping everyone involved. They do this by
running in different directions, highfive-ing spectators, then quickly getting back into formation.
When asked how the parades
were coming along, sophomore Brett
Thompson commented, “The parades are going phenomenal, and I
can’t wait until the next parade.”
So far, parades have been held
at Ridgeway, Collinsville, Creal
Springs, Vienna, and Steeleville. The
Marching Eagles expect to be performing in some more parades before this fall is over.

going great. I could not be happier
to be alive.”
It is apparent in the parades that
Mr. Shumaker tries to make the atmosphere as fun as possible, while
also showing how much serious
work it takes to create the routines
and to practice the songs.
The Marching Eagles’ performances are impressive, and the future of the Marching Eagles seems
brighter every day.

VHS is marching through with flag corps and band with parades all over Southern Illinois. They are participating in
parades being held in Creal Springs, Collinsville, Vienna, Steeleville, and Ridgeway, showing VHS pride all over with
songs and flag routines.
VHS graduate Buck Bryant
was deployed for an eighteen month
tour in Iraq on September 18,
2005. Buck graduated from VHS
in 2003, and his sister Kelly is currently a VHS senior.
Buck is Crew Chief for a CH47
Chinook helicopter, and is a member of 6th Battalion / 101st Aviation
Brigade (airborne). He is also a Distinguished Honored graduate from
AIT at Ft. Eustis, Va., in January
2004.
Buck has been stationed in Ft.
Campbell, Kentucky since January
2004. His sister, Kelly said, “I’m
really proud of Buck. He has a lot
of courage and I will miss him a lot.”

Utilitarianism is when someone
tries to choose the action that
produces the greatest good for the
greatest number of people. The
question typically asked is: Do the
good consequences outweigh the
bad?
Next was the rights paradigm or
(Deontological Ethics).
Deontological Ethics is the idea
to do the right thing no matter what
the consequences. It is to treat
others as you would want to be
treated.
The last moral was that was
talked about was the Character/
Virtues paradigm. Virtue Ethics
focuses on the character of people
and what we should become.
Virtues and character are ways
people would normally act in any
given situation. Making choices
according to their virtues or good
character are said to lead people to
a healthy, happy life, and also a
healthy and happy society.
After students learned the three
paradigms, the students broke up
into groups with students from other
schools. The first topic talked about
was cheating. All the groups went
into different rooms and discussed
the issue. Then, students talked
about drugs and alcohol.
After that, students talked about
the problems they had in their own
schools.
The last day, each group made
up a skit about issues like drugs/
alcohol, cheating, treatment of
students, religion in schools, student
and teacher relationships, and what
should always be kept confidential.
The students from VHS
thoroughly enjoyed this experience.
The juniors that went are going to
try and start an ethics club at VHS.
VHS is sponsoring a poster

English II class participates JILG Officers attends
in
writing workshop
leadership conference
By Kristin Hunter
Submitted by Rosalie Corse
Mrs. Cochran’s third block English II class has been participating
in a writing workshop.
The topic of the paper was to
compare and contrast the two main
female characters in “The Necklace”
and “False Gems” both written by
Guy de Maupassant.
The focus of the workshop is to
go through the step-by-step writing
process. Each day a different part
of a paper was discussed; the first
day was the introduction, the second was the body, and then came
the conclusion.
Students were then required to
type their papers. Mrs. Cochran
brought the mobile cart into the
classroom for her students to use.
She said, “It is difficult to require students to type papers out at home
because of availability. The mobile
lab allows us to make it a requirement.”
On Wednesday, October 5th
and 6th, sixteen schools from
Southern Illinois gathered at the Oil
Belt Church Camp in Flora to engage in the activities of the Leadership Development Conference. The
Leadership Development Conference (LDC) was held for the Career Association officers of the Jobs
for Illinois Graduates. Jobs for Illinois Graduates (JILG) is a senior
year program that provides 35-40
participants the opportunity to acquire the skills to graduate, and the
confidence to succeed.

and reporter. When the students
arrived at the camp, group photos
were taken of the officers and their
career specialist. Everyone gathered for the opening ceremony and
were informed about the activities
planned for the day. Some of the
activities included a ropes course

Tom Welch, Vice President of
Field Services for JILG, has been involved with the program for seven
years. For six years, he was a career specialist at Flora High School.
Mr. Welch strongly believes that this
year’s Leadership Development
Conference was a great success. He
stated in an interview that he is
pleased to see such a motivated
group of seniors with such positive
attitudes. “Everybody had fun.” Mr.
Welch, also, believes that this LDC
gave everyone the time, space, opportunity and support to learn, practice and use new leadership skills. He
was very pleased with outcome of
this amazing event. “Everyone’s hard
work and cooperation really paid
off.”
The Career Association officers
from VHS who participated in this
event were: Justin Flora, Treasurer;
Whitney Newton, Secretary; Kristen
Rogers, Reporter; Daniel Gonzalez,
Second-Vice President; and J.D.
Gonzalez, first Vice President. The
career specialist for the Jobs for Illinois Graduates program at VHS is
Rosalie Corse.
