students win business skills competition

Six Vienna High School
students won awards at the
Shawnee College Business Skills
Competition on Thursday, February
25th. There were 180 students that
competed in written, performance,
and presentation events.
VHS students that won include,
Ben Yates-1st Place in Web Page
Design and 3rd Place in Networking
Concepts; Sarah Cain-1st Place
Entrepreneurship; Kyle Loyd2nd Place in Public Speaking;
Hannah McGinnis-2nd Place in
Job Interview; Bridgett Cavitt-3rd
Place in Accounting II; and Kirsten
Trambley-3rd Place in Electronic
Presentations.
Six high schools attended the
competition. Participating students
represented
Anna-Jonesboro,
Joppa, Goreville, Century, Massac
County, and Vienna High School.
The top three competitors in each
event were awarded trophies.
VHS Business teachers Mrs.
Joan Clayton and Mr. Drew
Lawrence were very pleased with
their students performances in the
competition. “The students worked
hard to prepare for the competition,
and their hard work really paid off,”
Mrs. Clayton commented.

hosts freshman orientation

Freshman Orientation took
place on February 24, 2010. The
incoming freshmen started off the
day by splitting into groups with
two Student Council leaders and
doing an ‘ice breaker’ activity.
After everyone became familiar
with each other, they participated in
a traditional VHS obstacle course.
Then they joined Mrs. Palmer
in her line dancing extravaganza.
Later, Student Council members
took the students on a scavenger
hunt
around
the
school.
Mr. Harner, VHS Principal,
then led them in a game of “Mr.
Harner Says”. The winner was
Ben Shelton, of Buncombe Grade
School. The 8th graders then played
a game of VHS Jeopardy hosted
by Mr. Harner and Mrs. Palmer.
After testing their VHS knowledge
they ate lunch and watched
the 2009 Homecoming video.
Mrs. Beth Palmer helped
coordinate the activities for the day.
Incoming Freshmen and Student Council Members after a long day at Freshman Orientation.
She said, “This years 8th graders
were really into the Freshman
Orientation activities. I believe
that they really enjoyed the line
dancing. We had 100% involvement
and I could tell they were having
fun with it. I think their favorite
part of the day was probably the
obstacle course because they were
competing against each other.”

VHS Nursing and Anatomy classes visit cadaver lab

On March 5th, 23 students in
the Nursing and Anatomy classes
attended the Human Anatomy Cadaver Lab at Logan Chiropractic
College in St. Louis, Missouri.
“A Brief Tour of the Human Body” is an anatomy,
health, and science educational
program conducted by medical
students attending the college.
Students receive an introduc-
tion to methods of cadaver preservation, rules of conduct in an
anatomy laboratory, and an overview of the physiology and the
anatomic relationships of the major
organ systems of the human body.
Students were able to observe actual dissected human
cadavers, viewing the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, and nervous sys-
tem and associated organs. The
physiological function or the various organs was also discussed.
Students were able to actually
hold a human heart, lung, and brain
in their hands. They were able to
examine the human body, indentifying the various organs. Anatomy
students had been studying the systems throughout the year and were
able to apply that knowledge as they
viewed and examined the bodies.
Many of the students had
looked forward to the cadaver lab
trip for four years and were not
disappointed. “It was an amazing experience that I will never
forget. To experience the human
body in this way was unbelievable,” said Senior, Drake Sanders.

Scholar Bowl takes second at Regionals

Vienna High School Scholar
Bowl team finished with a winning 2010 season and second
place at Regionals. The Regional
competition was fierce with Vienna losing only in the final round.
Previously that night, the VHS
team beat an intense Murphysboro
team by only three points, and
beat Goreville by 72 points.

Goodman competed for Vienna
in the Regional tournament.
Ethan McGinnis was high scorer
for the Eagles with 160 points.

Quad State Band Festival at Murray State

This
year,
two
VHS
students participated in the
63rd Annual Quad State Band
Festival, which was held at
Murray
State
University.
Sophomore, Jessica Capron,
a flute player, and Senior Ethan
McGinnis, a trumpet player, took
part is the musical festivities
which began February 25th and
concluded on February 27th.
Jessica and Ethan were among
400 students from Illinois,
Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Following auditions Thursday
afternoon all the musicians were
divided into four different bands.
All of the bands practiced for
nearly two hours on Thursday
and most of the day Friday in
preparation for Saturday’s concert.
Both Jessica and Ethan were
chosen to perform in the ‘white’
band, which was the opening
band in Saturday’s performance.
The ‘white’ band performed
admirably, and was followed
by the three other bands
performing
just
as
well.
When asked about her
performance
at
Murray,
sophomore
Jessica
Capron
commented, “It was absolutely an
amazing experience. I recommend
that any participating band
student should attend Quad
State. Its alot of fun and a
very well organized event.”

FCCLA attends spring rally

FCCLA
members
attended their section Spring Rally
Thursday, February 25, 2010 at
Southeastern Illinois College in
Harrisburg.
They participated
in two mini-workshops, raised
money in a silent auction for the
IL Foundation, and viewed a multi
media presentation.
Some of Vienna High School
and the community service projects
have included: selling flowers
to make money for members to
attend the Fall Conference at
SIUC; plant and weed flowers in
school flower beds; visit and take
cookies to residents at Hillview
Healthcare in Vienna; raise money
for families in need and/or donate
gifts for underprivileged children
at Christmas; send Christmas cards
and cookies to VHS graduates in
armed forces; send letters to service
men and women in hospitals, make
Valentines for residents at Hillview
Healthcare; and donate a Home
Ec Class embroidered blanket to
charitable fund raising.
One year FCCLA raised money
for phone cards for service men and
women. Five years ago, FCCLA
collected canned food for our own
local pantry. FCCLA just had their
own pizza party, in which every
student made their own pizza.
Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America (formerly
Future Homemakers of America)
is the Career and Technical Student
Organization for Family and
Consumer Science Students.
FCCLA is a national student
organization that helps young men
and women become better leaders
in their families, careers and
communities. Students learn skills
for life: planning, goal setting,
problem solving, decision making
and interpersonal communication.
FCCLA is the only student
organization with the family
as its focus. Members
have
FCCLA members, Kayla Elms, Heather Nance, and Kasyn Moore handed out cookies
to Mr. Hight and the rest of the teachers.

WYSE goes to sectionals

Things seldom seem as fun
as they really are until you’ve
actually had a chance to do
them. WYSE isn’t just a test of
knowledge, its a test of patience
and, on the right occasion, luck.
On February 4th, Mr. Jones’s
WYSE Team took their test-taking
talents to Shawnee Community
College for the WYSE Regionals.
Taking with them their trusty
substitute test taker, Jacob Lane,
and the bulk of the WYSE team,
who through intellect, and a little
bit of luck, were able to bring
home the third place trophy.
Five students have advanced to the
WYSE Sectionals held at Carbondale
on March 9. Joe Myers advancied in
computer science, Ethan McGinnis
advanced in biology, Cody Hostfeldt
advanced computer science, Austin
Leal advanced in physics, and Clayton
Smith advanced in computer science.
A quiet, rainy
ride to
Carbondale gave the team
time to collect their thoughts
about
the
ensuing
event.
Once there, a challenge was
already waiting at the door:
seating arrangements. The quasidaunting task of fighting through
the waves of opposing students
and tightly built desks was enough
to devastate one’s confidence.
After the two 40-minute
test periods, the team left for a
lunch break and returned back
to SIU for the awards ceremony.
When talking to Talon this
year’s sponsor, Mr. Brian Jones,
commented, “Seeing Austin
Leal, Clayton Smith, Joe Myers,
Cody Hosfeldt, and Ethan
McGinnis advance to Regionals
was the highlight of the year.”
Mr. Jones was also asked what his
ambition was for next year’s team.
“I would really like to finally
beat Anna-Jonesboro,”
Mr. Jones also talked about
other
memorable
moments
over the past year. “My
favorite moment this year was
QQ Bubble Tea and going to
Buffalo Wild Wings,” He said.
Another year has come and
gone for the VHS WYSE team
but with a proud sponsor and
new students coming in each
year the future only looks bright.

VHS teachers share high school memories

Everyone has that one moment from high school that no matter what, they’ll never forget. Most students forget that teachers are no
exception, so the Talon decided to ask some of the teachers to tell us about a memory that they’ll never forget from their high school
years.

Do you remember what your
first day of high school was
like? You are absolutely terrified! Well, of course, I was no
exception to this awful pit-ofyour-stomach feeling, I was
one of the blessed students that
gets to enjoy a wonderful bus
ride that wonderful first day. Let
me give you a little background
about my family. My sister is 9
years younger than me. Do the “math” people, my first day of
high school was her first day of Kindergarten. So needless to say
as I am standing at the end of my driveway waiting for the bus
on my first day of high school, so is my sister, my grandpa, three
cats and two dogs. My grandpa was also taking pictures. I was
teased for two weeks about how I was “escorted” to the bus.
My most memorable moment from high school was the
time that I made up an excuse
for being late for a date (with
a girl). The excuse was a flat
tire. When I was finally ready to
leave I had a real flat tire. The
problem was that I didn’t know
how to change a flat tire. So I’m
sitting on the side of the road
reading the owners manual. In
the meantime I’ve got these two
little kids that keep riding by on this little motorcycle. They do
this a half a dozen times or so, and they’re laughing and pointing. So I’m getting frustrated and I finally yell at them as they
go by. Then the little one flips me the bird. I eventually get the
spare tire on the car and had to cancel my date altogether. I’m
sure you want to know what happened to the girl. She had a serious bout with depression and never quite recovered. She now
lives in a van down by the river, sitting on Uncle Pete’s couch.

My most embarrassing moment from high school happened
in the spring of 1972 during my
freshman year. It was the first
softball game of the year and I
was the starting left fielder. During my first time at bat I was able
to get a hit and get on base. The
batter behind me hit a double
and the coach at third base was
waving me around third and on
to home. As I got to home plate
my toe caught the edge of the plate and I proceeded to fall, but
while trying to catch myself, I sprained my ankle and ripped open
the front of my shorts. After being helped off the field, my mom
decided the best thing to do would be to sew the front of my shorts
together until we could get back to the school. So for the next six
innings I was sewn tightly in my shorts until we were back at school.
Needless to say, by the time we arrived at school I was very much
in need of using the bathroom. My mom had to then cut me out
of my shorts because things had become desperate by then. So,
my very first softball game ended in the first inning, but at least
we won the game. My teammates, of course, never let me forget
it. Redemption, came though, my senior year when I was starting
at shortstop and Cobden went undefeated that season. But I suffered a severe case of poison ivy, missed a week of school, and
somehow got set up with a date for prom with a boy who shall
we say, was not a man of words. There probably weren’t more
than a dozen complete sentences spoken for the entire evening.

My most memorable moment
was having three art works selected for National Competition (in
New York). Two received a gold
key, one received a gold key and
was a blue ribbon finalist. There
were only three out of about 600
works that received blue ribbon
status. The competition was at
Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon
and had about 90 schools entered.

my friends and I decided to skip
school. When I got home that
afternoon, my father was waiting for me at the front door. He
told me we were heading over to
the high school to speak to the
principal. The principal kept my

Local authors donate books to Johnson County schools

Former VHS Superintendent Marleis Trover donated a
copy of her book Pass the Plate
– The Legend and Legacy of
United States Congressman Kenneth Gray, to the libraries of all
the Johnson County schools in a
special program held on February
24th at VHS. The book chronicles the life and career for former U.S. Congressman Kenneth
Gray.
At the program, Dr. Trover
greeted the guests and thanked
those in attendance for coming.
Dr. Trover, along with co-author
Dr. Maxine Pyle, presented a
short film made about their book.
They then presented each school
with a copy of their book to add to
their school libraries. Representatives from each school in attendance were Ms. Teri Coscarelli,
Superintendent of Vienna Grade
School; Dr. Steve Webb, Superintendent of Goreville Schools;
Ms. Kathy Anderson, Superintendent of Buncombe Grade School;
Mr. Dennis Holland, Superintendent of Cypress Grade School;
Susan Botarf, Librarian of New
Simpson Hill Grade School, and
Mr. Terry Moreland, Superintendent of Vienna High School.
VGS Superintendent Coscarelli thanked the authors on
behalf of the schools for their
generous donation, and expressed
her appreciation for the addition
of this valuable historical resource to all their school libraries.
Dr. Trover was Superintendent at Vienna High School from
1993-2008. She has made numerous contributions over the years
to VHS. She now is teaching
graduate administration courses
at McKendree University as an
Associate Professor. Her latDr. Maxine Pyle and Dr. Marleis Trover, donate copies of their book,

Pass the Plate.

School welcomed three
new members into the
Hall of Fame. Those
members include, Allison (Phillips) Quereshi, who graduated
in 1993, the late Gene
Dick, who graduated
in 1944, whose award
was accepted by his
wife, Mrs. Gene Dick,
and Jeanne Clayton,
who graduated in 1969.

all that were honored.

VHS takes 2nd place in annual Team Quest Challenge

The annual Team Quest Challenge
(more commonly known as Olympiad) was held on February 2nd at the
Herrin Civic Center. The quest team
was made up of Sophomore Tyler
Harner and Seniors Ethan McGinnis,
Cody Hosfeldt, and Christina Faith.
The team received 2nd place at
the challenge and qualified for the
AIL Group Team Quest Regional
Championship. At the AIL Championship, VHS tied for 10th place
out of 23 other teams and qualified for the IL State competition.
Team Quest is a program that
challenges students to apply their
knowledge in a group setting to come
up with an answer to a question or
VHS Olympiad team advances to the State Team Quest Challenge. Pictured are

a solution to a problem. It allows
students to come up with their own
ideas and to be creative to accomplish the challenge of the program.
This program is a competitive
activity which makes the students
strive for the top award. The goal is
to encourage students and give them
the opportunity to show their talents
while working together on a team.
Senior Christina Faith talks about
her experience at the Team Quest
Challenge saying, “It was fantasticthe academic competition as well
as the memories made by our team.
We all got along well, which contributed to our success. My favorite
challenges were the creative ones,
particularly the making of our mascots - Kiki, the Komodo Dragon,
and Sanchez, the giant ant. Sanchez
was a BEAST! I’ll never forget our
experiences at the Olympiad, some
of the best of my senior year so far.”
Junior Sarah Cain was recently
appointed as the VHS SIDEZ
representative. After being nominated, her appointment took place
by VHS Principal, Mr. Harner,

fellow junior class members to
become a part of the program.
What is SIDEZ, you may
ask? SIDEZ stands for Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone. It includes all of
Pulaski County, part of Alexander, and a portion of Johnson
County. It was created to offer
communities some opportunities for growth and revitalization. The SIDEZ program uses
four key principles: economic
opportunity, sustainable community development, community based partnerships, and
strategic vision for change.

Eagles and Lady Eagles go to Regionals
McGinnis joins 1000 pt club

The girls basketball team
wrapped up their season at
the
Regional Championship
game
on Friday, February
12, in
Harrisburg. In their
first game of the tournament,
the Lady Eagles were able
to beat Hamilton County
with a final score of 56-38.
They then moved on to play
Carmi-White County. Things
were looking bleak; within
the first quarter as Carmi
took a 16-0 lead over Vienna.
Ending at the half the girls
showed improvement trailing
only three points behind.
Things
couldn’t
have
looked worse for the ladies
until Carley Childress took
the game into overtime with
42’s all across the board. The
Lady Eagles were able to take
a 50-46 lead with only 1:08
on the clock. But Carmi put
together a conventional threepoint play to take a 52-50 win.

Hannah McGinnis is the 11th

The VHS musical “The Music Man” was held
March 11 through the 13th. The performance
was a huge success.
Heather Nance, who played a farmer’s
wife and a band player in the production “The
Music Man”, stated, “Being in the musical is
a really great experience. Everybody is so
great. Sometimes we all get a little stressed
but who doesn’t? I guess its the beauty of life
and growing up. In the end the musical always
turned out to be one of the highlights of my life.
Mrs. Hensley does an amazing job along with
all the other directors, choreographers, and the
“magic man” who works with the singers. I’m
already looking forward for next year!”

VHS Cheerleading Squad travels to Nashville, Tennessee

The VHS Cheerleading Squad ended the
2009-2010 season with a bang! From being the
first football cheerleading squad in VHS history,
to competing at 3 ICCA completions, and preforming at games and at freshman orientation.
The squad has had a very busy year. So to end
this season on a good note the squad decided to
take a small road trip to Nashville Tennessee.
Coach Gina Langston commented, “This year
has been a really great year. The girls have worked
very hard to get where they are today. This trip
together was a perfect way to wrap up the season.”
Though there is not yet a date set for
the tryouts for the 2010-2011 cheerleading
squad, everyone who wishes to become a
VHS cheerleader is encouraged to come and
tryout and contribute their talent to the school.

VHS students attend Math Field Day

On February 16th, hundreds
of students from as far as northern
Tennessee, southeast Missouri,
southeast Kentucky and southern
Illinois converged on the SIU Arena
to compete in a two-hour grueling
mathematics test. The schools are
broken into three divisions based on
enrollment. For each school, the top
three students in each grade level 912 constitute that school’s team. (A
school can send up to 36 students.)
A trophy is awarded to the
top school in each division.
Certificates of merit are given in
each grade level and division to
schools, and in each grade level
to top performing students. The
test consists of 62 questions pulled
from Algebra, Geometry, and PreCalculus math content and students
earn one point for each correct
answer, but are penalized a quarter
of a point for each wrong answer.
Negative scores are possible, so
students are encouraged to only
answer questions they really have
a good chance of getting right.

One freshman team just missed
honorable mention with a very
impressive combined score of 14.5,
sophomores posted a 12, juniors
a 17.75 and seniors received a
cumulative score of 35.75. Ethan
McGinnis was our high scorer
with a 17, and Christina Nelson
brought home a respectable 12.25.
This type of experience helps
students prepare for high-stakes
standardized exams and apply the
math learned in each course. Ms.
Will-Henn commented. “While
students can feel overwhelmed by
many of the questions on the exam,
it is good practical experience for
students hoping to take higher level
math courses during their time at
Vienna High School. This is only
our second year of competition
and our scores have already shown
a marked improvement over last
year. Most of the other teams in
our division have organized math
teams that practice weekly using
old exams and other strategies to
improve their performance,” Ethan
McGinnis shared his feelings about
the test. He said, “Extremely,
ridiculously difficult. It’s the kind
of test that makes you want to cry.”
Industrial Tech class experiments with Newton’s law

For every action there is an equal
and opposite reaction. Newton’s
laws are experienced by making air
powered race cars. Students in Mr.
Sandfort’s Technology class made
race cars from pine blocks. They then
used an air compressor, set to 120 psi,
to propel the cars. They used the tools
and machines in the industrial arts
shop to make the bodies of the cars.
Their goal was to make them as
aerodynamic as possible. The more
aerodynamic the car, less friction
there is, the faster and farther they will
go. Some of the cars clocked in at an
amazing 30 feet in .62 seconds. Also
the cars were tested for distance, some
of them traveled over 90 feet from the Stetson Fox prepares his car for

FFA week comes once again to VHS
By Jared Johnson
During the days of Monday,
February 22 through Friday,
February 29, the members of FFA
(Future Farmers of America),
as well as many other non-FFA
members, were allowed to do a
different thing each day of the
week to show their FFA pride.
The first day of the week,
Monday, was teacher appreciation
day. The FFA members passed out
cookies to all of the teachers. The
FFA members also dressed up in
their FFA shirts with the colors,
which are gold and blue.
The day after, Tuesday, was
muddy truck day, where they
see who can get their truck the
muddiest. Wednesday was official
dress day. The FFA members also
greeted the incoming Freshman on
this day.
The final day was tractor day, seems
someone thought it was lawn mower day.

which FFA members dressed

The final day of FFA week,
the members dressed up in their
coveralls and drove their tractors to
school.
During the first few days of FFA
week, students were encouraged to
put a dollar of any value into a jar
with a teachers’ name on it. The
teacher’s jar who contained the
most amount of money had to kiss
a pig at Freshman Orientation. The
winner was everyone’s favorite
Art and Driver’s Ed teacher, Marc
Palmer.
This year’s week for the
Future Farmers of America was a
quite memorable experience that
hopefully encouraged the soon-tobe Freshmen to be less intimidated

Classes combine to make bat habitat

The students from Mr. Hight’s
Biology II class combined with
Mr.
Sandfort’s
construction
class to provide a habitat for
the bats of Johnson County.
Bats provide a great service for
the farmers of our county. They
eat insects that would damage
crops. Many students never get the
chance to teach, to experience the
fun of working with tools, and to
understand how we are interrelated
with the ecosystems around us.
The combined class built a
total of nineteen bat houses using
wood donated by construction
students and tools supplied
by the industrial arts shop.
Many of the students involved
in the project had never used tools,
but after working in conjunction
with other students that week
they had a lot of fun and learned
a great deal too. They enjoyed
working together and helping one
another. Many of the students
proclaimed that projects like this
should take place more often.

Bryan West builds an impressive bridge with toothpicks

Bryan West holds his completed bridge.
In Mr. Sandfort’s Industrial
Tech class, Sophomore Bryan West
decided to rocket above the bar and
build something fantastic. A bridge
built completely out of toothpicks
might not seem so exciting, but this
bridge is definitely something to be
proud of.
Using about 200 to 250
toothpicks, Bryan constructed a
bridge with no weak points. The
toothpick bridge can hold up to
267.9 pounds, which means it
could hold about two averagesized teenagers without breaking.

toothpicks.
When asked about making the
bridge, Bryan said, “It was fun.
Actually testing it was exciting.”
The bridge was based on a triangular
design, because, as he had learned
from experience, triangles have
no weak points. About fifteen
hours was spent on designing and
building the bridge.
Building the bridge was a
task set by Mr. Sandfort to have
his students design a bridge with
toothpicks that would hold as much
weight as possible.
After turning in the bridge and
receiving an A+, Bryan decided to
donate his bridge to VHS for the
future students of industrial tech
class to use as an example.
