With a large segment of the donor base on vacation and many schools that host blood drives on-break, this is an especially challenging time in which to collect sufficient blood to meet the needs of patients. The Company Store On-Site Schedule Survey Results Are In Thanks to all of you who participated in this year’s Employee Engagement Survey. The results are in, and our overall favorability rating was 83 percent! Company-wide, hospitals in HCA’s North Texas Division ranked first overall in favorability. Here are some of the highlights from this year’s results. As a facility, these are our top five strengths: • I understand how the work I do contributes to the overall success of the facility/company. • My job makes good use of my skills and abilities. • In my work group, employees are treated with respect by physicians and medical staff. • People in my work group demonstrate the skills needed to meet patient/customer expectations. • Our Senior leadership team gives employees a clear picture of the direction in which this facility/company is headed. (continued on page 12) Helping to Stamp Out Hunger in Plano Nineteen MCP departments took part in our annual food drive. This year’s collection again benefitted Minnie’s Food Pantry, a Plano-based non-profit organization that is 100 percent donor-funded. The resulting truckload of food was delivered to Minnie’s on July 27. Pictured here are members of the Employee Advisory Committee (EAG), which sponsored the 2016 drive. The food shown represents only a small fraction of what was donated. Heart-Imaging Lab Recertified The Medical Center of Plano’s echocardiography laboratory has been granted full accreditation for an additional three years. Notification came late last month from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission’s Echocardiography Board of Directors. The IACEL commended MCP for its unflagging pursuit of excellence in the field of echocardiography. F Save the Date! Seventh Annual World-Class Softball Tournament Hosted by Your Employee Advisory Group Saturday, October 1 Heritage Yards Park, Plano North Texas 2-Step Program Accepting Applications Have you ever wanted to become a RN? Here’s your opportunity! The Medical Center of Plano partners with Collin College to enable hospital employees to earn an associate’s degree in nursing in as little as 16 months. The HCA North Texas 2-Step Nursing Program is open to those employed on a full-time, part-time, or PRN basis. Gary Huey, the program’s site coordinator at MCP, will share details of the onboarding process and academic prerequisites in two separate information sessions on Friday, Aug. 5. The sessions will be conducted in the large computer classroom of the Center for Learning, located at 1630 Coit Road, Suite 203. For more information, or to RSVP, call Gary Huey at 972-547-8120, or email him at gary.huey@ hcahealthcare.com. A Trusted Face at the HR Helm Please join us in welcoming back Jennifer Morris as our new Vice President of Human Resources. Jennifer brings with her a solid record of achievement, combined with an intimate knowledge of our culture gained through 12 years’ prior employment in the HR Department, starting out as a recruitment specialist and advancing to management responsibilities. Jennifer Morris Three years ago, Jennifer accepted an appointment to the leadership team at Medical Center Arlington, first as Director of Human Resources, and later as the hospital’s Human Resources VP. Her accomplishments at MCA included the development and execution of a turnover-reduction strategy that lowered RN turnover from 23 percent to 15 percent over a two-year period. Under Jennifer’s leadership, employee engagement at MCA rose to HCA’s top quartile, while the HR Department itself maintained an internal customer-service rating of 98 percent or higher. At the North Texas Division level, Jennifer had a prominent role in the launch of oneHR. Jennifer’s undergraduate degree is from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. She subsequently earned a master’s degree from Dallas Baptist University. A native of Hastings, Neb., Jennifer and her family settled in the DFW area when she was five years old. She and her husband now make their home in Plano. Jennifer’s recreational interests include traveling, cooking, and organizing game nights with friends. F Employee Advisory Group Represents You In 2005, HCA launched its Healthy Work Environment initiative. It provided for the establishment, at each HCA hospital, of an Employee Advisory Group (EAG) to serve as an additional forum in which to raise issues, and make recommendations for enhancing the work environment. The EAG consists of both management and non-management employees, each of whom serve two-year terms. EAG members perform an advisory function, and are encouraged to voice suggestions related to employee retention, educational needs, work safety and efficiencies, patient satisfaction, community involvement, and value-added services. Employees are encouraged to share with EAG members their own ideas on these topics, so that they can be submitted for consideration at monthly EAG meetings. Topics falling outside the EAG’s purview include wages, benefits, staffing, ethics and compliance issues, or individual employee grievances. ER Update Nurses Climb Professional Ladder Fear and Anger A number of Emergency Department employees have recently secured professional certifications. Carole Covey and Olivia Oliphant were both granted CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) designation. Ken Carpenter was certified as a TCRN (Trauma Certified Registered Nurse). The certifications were awarded through the Board of Certified Emergency Nurses (BCEN). F Expansion Project Surges Ahead The Emergency Department’s Refresh Project continues, with good progress reported on the five new patient rooms now under construction.F Department Has New Interim Manager Innocent Anunobi steps in this month as Interim Manager of the Emergency Department on our main campus. Beginning with his arrival here eight years ago as a staff nurse, Innocent has proven to be a valued leader in the ED. He previously served as the department’s assistant nurse-manager. Please join us in wishing him well as he Innocent Anunobi takes up his new responsibilities. F PBED Administrator Departs This month we bid farewell to Melissa Schilling, who’s stepping down as administrator of 24/7 Emergency Care, our Provider-Based Emergency Department, in order to accept a similar position at the PBED in Flower Mound. Melissa has been a member of our MCP family for two and a-half years, and is credited with helping ensure 24/7 Emergency Care’s successful launch. We wish her well in her new endeavor. F Trauma Nurse is Subject of Magazine Profile A story on Ken Carpenter appears in the July/August edition of Plano Magazine. It discusses Ken’s dual career, in which he combines full-time responsibilities as a trauma nurse in MCP’s Emergency Department with full-time duty as a firefighter/paramedic with the Plano Fire Department. F Save These Dates! Employee Forums Wednesday, September 21 to Friday, September 23 We have heard a lot in the media lately about fear and anger. In Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, Yoda says that “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” I hate to disagree with a Jedi of such prominence, but fear doesn’t always lead to anger and, although anger can lead someone to hate, the one doesn’t automatically result in the other. In both humans and animals, fear is a natural response to danger. When fear kicks in, the heart beats faster, blood pressure increases, muscles tighten, and senses are sharpened. As a basic emotion, fear is not necessarily a bad thing. However, the actions we take in response to it very well may be. When fear gets out of control, it candominate our lives, and be very debilitating. Consider the following from Bernard J. Tyson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente and one of the nation’s most prominent African-American executives. Writing in Fortune Magazine, Tyson says, “I have three sons, whom I love and respect, and I believe that each young man will be a great contributor to society. I’ve had ‘the talk’ with each of my sons about what to do if stopped by a police officer.” Acting on fear, Tyson has done what any good parent would do to protect his children. I myself recall having conversations with my two daughters about teenage boys and what to do about unwanted advances. I also remember a conversation my own father had with me about how to deal with rattlesnakes when we found several in the basement. Tyson is angry that he would find it necessary, in 21st Century America, (continued on page 5) Published by and for The Medical Center of Plano healthcare team 3 F irs T - Y ear F amily F irs T - Y ear F amily Chat With Charles Since June 2015, we have been conducting regular “Chat with Charles” meetings with staff members who have been here 90 days or less. The idea is to give these new employees an opportunity to tell senior leaders what has gone well during the onboarding period, and also tell them where there may be opportunities for improvement. We’re happy to say that there have been a number of issues we’ve been able to resolve with the input received. You spoke, we listened! There are also some things we won’t be able to change or adjust, and some things it may be possible to change or adjust at some point in the future. Here are just a few examples. Pharmacy Staff in the ED Request for additional pharmacy staff in the ED, especially to help with medication reconciliations. Resolution: To increase the Pharmacy’s presence in the ED, pharmacists will be responding to all strokes that present to the ED. Pharmacy is also working on an intern-staffed medication-reconciliation program. Lidocaine in Dialysis Lidocaine is administered during dialysis. The medication comes in a 10ml container, but only 0.5ml is actually needed. Smaller containers would cut down on product wastage. Resolution: Pharmacy is investigating whether smaller ampules are available, and will stock them if possible. For now, the 10ml ampules will be replaced with a 5 ml size. Length of New Graduate Nurse Internships Some staff members have express the opinion that internships in some nursing specialties should be longer. In Ephesians 4:26-27, the Apostle Paul writes, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry; do not give the devil a foothold.” So anger, in and of itself, is not wrong. Tyson expressed his anger in a good way by talking about it and confronting the issues. There are some, however, who express their anger by doing harm to others. Road rage is at near-epidemic levels. People reacting to social injustice are going to the streets, breaking into buildings, stealing things, destroying property, and hurting people. Where did people ever get the idea that doing evil can right a wrong? That would be the Devil. Fear and anger are emotions that can spur us to take action. But the actions we take are of our own choosing. May I suggest we follow Paul’s advice in Romans 12:18? – “As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Blessings, Chaplain Garry Higgs Published by and for The Medical Center of Plano healthcare team 5 MCP Family V Diane McClurg (and family), Laboratory Fort Dodge, Ia. As I sit down to compose this August message, I want to acknowledge right at the outset the hard work and dedication of the MCP staff these past two months, when patient volume has often been at capacity. On behalf of the entire senior leadership team, let me just me say that your flexibility and commitment – both to our mission and to patient safety – are greatly appreciated. Nurse recruitment continues to be a high priority as we plan for the weeks and months ahead. So it is with great excitement that we welcome Jennifer Morris to the MCP senior leadership team as our new Vice President of Human Resources. Jennifer returns to MCP after serving as the Human Resources VP at Medical Center Arlington. Please read the article on page 2 of this newsletter where her many accomplishments at MCA are described. Stewardship In the area of growth, I’m pleased to share with you the news that we’ve received approval from HCA to expand our Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. We are currently in the design phase of a project to add patient rooms on the third floor of Building II. We will keep you abreast of developments as we go forward. This month we also begin renovation of the Auditorium in Building III. Included are the installation of new audio-video equipment and carpeting, and the removal of multi-level seating. This project is tentatively slated for completion in mid-September. Quality Under the Quality pillar, we extend our congratulations to our echocardiography team, which has just had its accreditation extended for another three years. This is one more example of why people say “Take me to Plano.” Read more about it on page 2. Service I hope all of you have had the opportunity to review and discuss the results of our recent employee survey as they pertain to your own department. We take very seriously the candid feedback we get from you, and will use it to create action plans across the entire organization. Your involvement in the formulation of these plans is crucial to their success and, ultimately, to making MCP an even better place in which to work. I know that for many MCP households, it’s time to gear up for a new school year. That’s certainly the case at my house. I’d like to close this month by encouraging you to remember, as you shop for school supplies, that the students at Memorial Elementary School in Plano could also use some of the same things you’re picking up for your own kids. This school year marks the 25th anniversary of our partnership with Memorial Elementary, in which we try to meet some of the needs of the school’s many lowincome families. Please know that your donations will be received with tremendous gratitude, and with smiles from young students who otherwise might not have the supplies they need when classes begin. As always, thank you for all that you do for your patients and their loved ones, for your co-workers, and for the community. Sincerely, Charles F Survey Results (continued from page 1) As a facility, these are our top five opportunities: • We have enough people in my work group to handle the workload. • I feel my benefits compare favorably with benefits at similar companies. • I understand how my pay is determined. • I believe actions were taken as a result of the last employee survey. • Our work processes are highly efficient. Your leaders will be reviewing your department-specific results with you, so you can help select which survey questions you would like to focus on improving. We encourage you to actively participate in the action-planning process. These are your results, and we need your voice to help make The Medical Center of Plano the employer-of-choice in our community!
