Earth Stewardship Sunday
There was the threat of rain, it is true, but nothing could
dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of a group of people
ready to be taken out to the ballgame! Not even a pop-up
foul ball that landed on Nancy’s arm (Thanks be to God
that it wasn’t her head!) stopped the laughter and comradery for more than a few moments (long enough to know
she was okay).

The Roughriders won, the food was good, laughter reigned
and, for the 14 members and five guests that attended, a
good time was had by all.
Thank you to Rebecca and Patti for putting this outing together, and thank you to the Frisco Roughriders for making
it possible for our church to come as a group and enjoy
such a great family outing.

“There are many rooms in my Father’s house.”
John 14: 2
Jesus goes from heart to heart, asking if he might enter….
Every so often, he is welcomed. Someone throws open the door of his or her
heart and invites him to stay. And to that person Jesus gives this great promise:
“...In my Father’s house are many rooms.”
“I have ample space for you, “ he says…. We make room for him in our hearts,
and he makes room for us in his house.

SHOUT IT OUT!
Well what in the world does that mean?! Don’t worry, I am not asking
you to go and stand on street corners and shout out the Good News to everyone in hearing distance. I applaud you if you do, but that is not what this is
about. But we are still talking about Evangelism. I am talking about telling
the surrounding community what we have going on in this church, and how they
can be part of it.
What I would like to do is have an event here, at the church, that highlights each of the programs, ministries, and guest groups that go on here.
This idea was presented to me by Joanne Kozlowski with Spirit of Math.
What she presented was:
♦
Plan a day, sometime before school started up and have a open house
♦
Send out a flier to the surrounding community that had the name of every
single group that meets here and each of our ministries on it (split cost
among them):
Disciples Christian Church
Bright Beginnings Preschool
Outreach (and what they are)
Spirit of Math
Community
Boy Scouts
Worship
Girls Scouts
Evangelism
Yoga
Nar-Anon
♦
Have booths for each group where they can show what they do, talk about
when they meet and offer membership
♦
Maybe have demonstrations (think yoga, math, etc.)
♦
A couple of food booths or sell drinks
What do you think? Would you participate? Will you come? Will you
tell someone? Are you willing to help plan and implement this? Connie will need
help.
Think about this and let either Connie or myself know.

Earth Stewardship Sunday
Did you know? Did you know that this church has a large grassy lawn? I am sure it is
something that has totally flown under your radar, but we do! We do have a large, empty,
under-utilized and full of potential piece of God’s earth that is just waiting for us to wake
up and do something with. So…Wake up!
The Worship Committee would like to use this coming Earth Stewardship Sunday (April
26th) to kick off a composting and gardening spot. We would like to see what interest
there is in building a garden plot (I am thinking Lasagna Garden) and composting pile that
could be used to grow some fresh vegetables that could benefit our members and the
Plano Food Pantry.
Never heard of a Lasagna Garden? Wondering if this is something that will bring Garfield
the cat running? Nope. It’s different. It is a style of gardening that does not disturb the
existing soil (which means no digging or tilling!), but builds a bed of different layers of
compostable materials in preparation of planting.
Before we do this, however, we need to know who is interested in participating and in
what way.
Are you available to help build a frame (48x72x24)? Can you bring old cardboard boxes?
Can you bring old newspaper? Help purchase a old bale of straw? Can you bring in coffee grounds, egg shells, vegetable scraps every Sunday? Will you come sometime during the week to water when the heat builds? Will you contribute in some other way?
While the idea is exciting, and I believe we could make a wonderful community garden
and honor the earth that we hold stewardship over, it will require many of us doing something. Think about it, pray about it, and then email me your thoughts.
Thank you

From the mouth of babes…
The following is a message that I received Monday morning when I got into work. It is from
Donna Clancy and she shared with me some wonderful insight that her 10 year old grandson had about our church:
“Good Morning!
Thought I'd share a couple of comments my grandson, Drew, made after church
yesterday. As we drove out he asked if he could go to church with me every Sunday. So, being the good grandmother, I told him I'd love it but didn't think his parents would be thrilled with that.
I asked him what he liked about our church. His response was that he liked the music (John) and the pastor (you) but that he really liked the people. I asked him
why. He said they're very friendly. In his church people say hi etc. but our people
"actually have a conversation with you!" He'll be 10 next month but I thought that
was very perceptive--which he is.
Kudos to you--you make it happen!
Donna”
And to each of you, I reply; Kudos to YOU! YOU make it happen! You make every person
who walks through those doors feel like a beloved and important part of this family. Thank
you!

Did you know that Disciples Christian Church has a library? Did you know
that there are hundreds of books that you can take home and read at your leisure? There are books on prayer, biblical history and spirituality; books on
women in the bible, the importance of the Lord’s Supper and how to be
healthy. Did you know that? Now the fact that many of these books were in
my office, at my house or in a classroom downstairs might have made it seem
like those books were not meant for you, but they are! And we are in the process of making them identifiable, available, and accessible!
With the help of our resident Librarian extraordinaire Alice Dillon, these
books will come from the dark dungeons and into the light. Alice is working
on books each week, placing check out cards into each one, and then making
a database to make finding a book easy for you. There will be a binder with
book listings in three different ways. You can look up a book by Author, by
Title or look at covers and subjects. And! And the books are going to be coming into the Atrium! It’s true! You will be able to see a book, take a book,
check out a book and return a book all in the same place we gather every
Sunday.
This is not a process that will be finished in a week or two. The bookshelf’s
need to come up from downstairs and be secured to a cement wall. The
books are being sorted and will be brought into the light as soon as there is a
space for them. But it is happening!
Maybe you have a book or two that you feel would be appropriate in the
church library. Maybe there is a novel you read that really made you feel
closer to God or something that healed a spot in your soul. If you would like,
feel free to bring those books and donate them to the church. Each month we
will highlight a few books in the link on a variety of subjects, maybe your
book will be one of them.

I Can Make a Difference
Why I Walk
Almost 9 years ago I was diagnosed with MS. To
say its a little bit life changing is an understatement, to say the very least. I remember vividly
the days of daily shots, thankfully for ME, those
are done! The oral medication is MUCH easier to
handle! I am in this fight, with many friends, against MS and we are getting closer to making it disappear! (At least make it stop progressing!) The day of my diagnosis had to be one
of the most terrifying times in my life, hopefully others in the future won't have to have that
moment.
Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops
people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS,
an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range
from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific
symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and
treatment, made possibly from the funds raised in events like the Walk MS, are moving us
closer to a world free of MS.
The money that we raise together will not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but
also provide programs which address the daily challenges of people living with MS today.
Across the Lone Star Chapter this year, the Walk MS series is striving to raise at least $1.5
million, but it takes the commitment and dedication of thousands of Texans to make that a
reality.
If you have questions about the Walk, MS, or my journey with MS please don’t hesitate to
ask! I love to share, and I want others to understand more about how we can all help!
If you feel inclined to donate, any amount you can contribute does make a difference. I can
accept checks made out to Dallas Walk MS or via my walk website.

I cannot express the love I feel from this wonderful church and everyone’s love and support. Thank you for the amazing friends that were able to make it out to Addison last Saturday morning; it was a beautiful day for a walk!
Much love,
Joy
