As a faith community, the practice
of daily prayer is central to everything we do. Each morning, our students gather in their Homegroups to
commence the day with prayer. It is
an act of unity, an acknowledgement of our need for love and guidance, a plea for help. To help guide
us in our prayer, we have prepared
a College Prayer which will be read
for the first time next week at our
Whole School Assembly.

Lisa Cole, our newly appointed Alumni Relations Manager, has also been getting the word out to

As we near our 90th anniversary as a College (2017), we are making a concerted effort to build
upon our sense of community, both past and present.
Excellence
‘Striving in Life’, our College motto, challenges all of us to ‘be our best’. As a place of learning,
we are challenged to provide the very environment for learning possible. The Oswald Learning
Centre, opened in 2010, is a great example of this. In 2014, our Year 9 students will move into a
new contemporary learning space adjacent to our farming precinct. This Year 9 Learning Experience will provide a challenging and engaging environment within which staff and students will
strive for excellence.
Learning
Early next term, students in Year 10 have the opportunity of attending our Subject Information
Evening (KLA Supermarket) to find out more about what’s on offer at Salesian and what pathway they wish to follow in terms of their education/career. Traditionally, these pathways have
been:

VCE & VET

VCAL
Whilst these options have provided 90% of our students with a realistic pathway moving forward,
there have been a number of students in Year 10 who find the decision to complete a straight
VCAL or VCE pathway difficult to make. In an effort to provide the widest range of options available to our students [as we should], we are currently developing alternative pathways to Year 12
based on new combinations of VCE and VET subjects. Some of these might include:


VCE Foundation English Unit 1/2

VET: Health

VET: Multimedia

VET: Outdoor Recreation

VET: Business

VET: Sport & Recreation (AFL focus)
These will hopefully provide realistic pathways that will keep more students at Salesian College
beyond Year 10.
Dance & Music Performances
Over these past two weeks, we have had the absolute pleasure of attending the various Dance
and Music performances presented by students in Years 7-12. These evenings are a wonderful
showcase, not only of the talents of our amazing students but also of the dedicated and inspirational teaching staff within the Arts Faculty. My thanks to Mr Paul McCarthy, Mrs Mary-Lou
Neilsen, Ms Susie Collins and Ms Charlie Fourie, as well as all those who helped support the
nights from behind the scenes.

Carefully review your child’s progress thus far when the Semester Report is distributed


Address any uniform issues that have arisen over the Semester and assist the College
by re-enforcing our shared expectations.

COMMUNITY FEAST DAY
Further to my comments in this Newsletter concerning Community Service on Mary, Help of Christians
Feast Day on Wednesday 1 st May it was very clear that the day is valuable to the life of the College and
that the day is appreciated by all concerned (students, parents and staff). However, there are concerns
about the structure of the day and there is a belief that the day needs to undergo change. There is a suggestion that the day could be better spent and that community service should have a strong House focus.
With this in mind I presented the following suggestions to the College Executive which were approved for
2014:





That community service is a central aspect of our identity as a Catholic School.
That Community service should be where possible student lead and House based.
Community service should be ongoing projects with ongoing connections in the local area.
Community service should directly focus on those that are less fortunate, disadvantaged or
marginalized by society.
Where possible community service should focus on local community and/or Catholic projects.
Therefore Community Service in 2014 will involve:

Each separate House developing an ongoing community service relationship with a particular
group. Over the six years that students from Years 7 to 12 spend in their House will give them
many learning opportunities and chances to directly help those less fortunate. Hopefully, over
the years particular Houses would be identified with a particular organization.

Secondly, at Year 9, community service to become an integrated and significant aspect of the
curriculum. It should be student lead and lead to direct work and assistance of those less fortunate.

Thirdly, at Year 11, all students should be given the opportunity to directly help those less fortunate in the local area. We will look to develop relationships with organisations such as our
feeder primary schools and other Catholic organisations.
Therefore, over their six years at the College students should have multiple ongoing opportunities to participate in community service. Firstly, over a five year period in their House, secondly, through a separate
and student lead year-long activity in Year 9 and thirdly, through working with local organization in Sunbury in Year 11.
As for Mary, Help of Christians Feast Day it is very important, as a Salesian school to continue this direct
association with the charism of Don Bosco. The feast day Mass will continue and have community service as a focus. The day should be a day of feast and celebration as Don Bosco would have. To facilitate
this atmosphere of celebration we will combine this day with the Athletics Carnival. That is, students
should arrive in their sports uniform for the day and after Mass in the Stadium go straight out onto the oval
and commence the Athletics Carnival – a bit like we do for the Don Bosco Feast day and the swimming
carnival.
YEAR 12 RETREAT
The director of Faith Education, Mr Stephen Connelly and I have spent some time in discussion with various staff including the College Executive over the future of the annual Year 12 Retreat. Specifically, the
issues for discussion included the time of the year, the venue and its associated costs and the need to
refocus aspects of the program around leadership, relationships and focus on preparing for the academic
side of Year 12.
With these key issues in mind the College has decided to move the timing of the Year 12 Retreat to November of students Year 11 year. That is, Year 11 students at the completion of their examination period

in November will spend the next three days on Retreat to prepare themselves for their Year 12 classes
which will follow on their return to school. For this year’s Year 11 students this means that they will be on
Retreat from Wednesday 13 November to Friday 15 November. These students will return to school on
Monday 18 November and begin their Year 12 classes for 2014. This will mean that there will be no interruption to Year 12 classes due to the Retreat in February.
Secondly, the venue for the 2014 Year 12 Retreat has changed to Rutherford Park – Country Retreat,
Blampied (about 15 minutes’ drive out of Daylesford). This change of venue was necessitated due to the
increased numbers which could not be accommodated at Mansfield, the cost per student and the reduced transport time needed.
Thirdly, while the Retreat will have a strong focus on relationships with self, family and God, there will
also be sessions which include Salesian Leadership, Elevate Education focusing on the future, goal setting and careers and practical sessions on Year 12 such as VCE and VCAL rules and regulations. There
will be an opportunity for Reconciliation and a highlight will be the celebration of the Eucharist.
I hope these changes will strengthen and enhance our work as a faith community committed to engagement and excellence.

RECT OR’S NEWS
God as a Friend
Year 8 students in core groups have been spending a day each for their annual retreat day held at Don Bosco
Youth Centre in Brunswick in the last two weeks and the last week of the term.
These retreat days are run by the ASYM, Australian Salesian Youth Mentors, a group of dedicated Salesian
youth from all over Melbourne spreading the gospel of joy to other youth.
The theme of these retreat days was ‘Friendship’. Students listened, reflected and shared on the importance of
friendship in life. A presentation on ‘Friendship with God’ was presented to the students, and were encouraged
to keep God as a good friend who knows them so well and who is there in all good times and the not-so-good
times.
During these retreat days, a thought surfaced up to my mind. Human friends may walk away or get separated
in life for various reasons. But, God as a friend will never walk away from us, wherever we are or whatever situation we are in.
Some people may assume that God has walked away from them. I do not think so. Often the case is that we
walk away from God in our busy-ness and self-centred preoccupations. God becomes irrelevant. And consequently and sadly, we often blame God for the problems we encounter in life while away from Him.
God is the supreme creator and giver of life who cares and cherishes us all. We are His loving designs. Yet,
He can still be considered as ‘friend’ in our life. God is always there! Psalm 139 sings ‘Where can I run from
your love’.
Let us always remind ourselves the presence of this friend God in our daily life. He is with us in good times and
bad, sickness and health, struggle and success, sadness and joy. He certainly is a true Friend we can have for
life.
May we always keep God our friend in our struggle and success!
As St. Pauls says, “if God is for us, who can be against us!” [Romans 8:31]

It’s been a very busy time for our staff and students and I just want to commend our students on their approach to
exams and finishing up Semester 1. I particularly want to highlight the Year 7’s and congratulate them on completing
a Semester with us here at Salesian. You have worked very hard to settle in, make new friends and adapt to a new
school environment. Many of you had some very late nights with performances in Music and Dance and your enthusiasm and the way you conducted yourself was admirable. Well done.
This week we commence Semester 2. Many students will have a new timetable and some will have new subjects.
Let’s start the new semester in the same fashion that we commenced semester 1. The change in semester presents
us with a fresh start, sometimes with different teachers or with new subjects.
Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews
This week we will send out our School Interviews booking instructions. We are using a new program and if you have
any problems please contact Melody Cuthbert. If your child is in Year 11-12 their report will be sent home. If your
child is in Year 7-10, you will receive their report at our Goal Setting Interviews with the homeroom teacher on Friday
28 June. We would love to see all there. It is imperative that students in Years 7-10 attend the goal setting interview
with you. We also encourage Year 11-12 students to attend the interviews.

WHAT IS THE VCAL?
Senior students at Salesian College have the choice of studying two senior certificates: The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).
The VCAL aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to make informed
choices about pathways to employment and further education.
There are currently over 20000 students enrolled in VCAL throughout Victoria. VCAL is a good
option for students who enjoy hands on learning opportunities and the chance to gain genuine
industry experience while remaining part of the College community.
Students can ask themselves these questions to help get started.
Do I work better when I am involved in practical, hands on tasks?
Does my career path involve an apprenticeship, trade or TAFE but not require an ATAR?
Do I want to start TAFE and get ongoing experience in the work place while still at school?

SPORT S NEWS
It’s Grand Final Time
Wednesday 24th will see our undefeated Senior AFL and Netball teams compete for the SACCSS
premiership. The netball girls will play St. Monica’s in what is sure to be a close match. St. Monica’s have played in every SACCSS netball grand final, however, during the round matches our
girls just took the win by 2 goals. The match will be played at the State Netball / Hockey Centre
and begins at 10am.
The Senior boys will play Penola Catholic College in the AFL grand final. Since the inception of
the SACCSS AFL competition, Salesian has not missed playing in a grand final and if the boys
are successful they will be premiers four years running. The AFL is played at Highgate Recreation Reserve with the match beginning at 12:40pm. It would be fantastic to have as many family
and friends on hand at both the netball and AFL to cheer on and celebrate a very successful year
for Salesian College. Good luck to all the players and coaches involved.
Success at the Victorian College Basketball Championships
Salesian College entered a male and female team in the Intermediate age division of the Victorian College Basketball Championships. Both teams played their preliminary rounds at Coburg on
13th June and have now qualified through to the finals tournament to be played at MSAC later in
the year. Congratulations to all involved with the basketball.
SACCSS Intermediate Futsal
We entered a boys team in the SACCSS Intermediate Futsal day and the team came up against
some very tough opposition. Although the boys lost all three matches, they had many chances
throughout all games but couldn’t quite convert some scoring opportunities. The SACCSS futsal
competition is incredibly strong, with the top four teams in SACCSS being in the top few teams in
the State.
Year 8 Premier League
Year 8 Premier League begins on Monday 24 th with home matches against St. Albans. The competition then continues throughout Term 3. Stay tuned for all the results in future editions of the
College newsletter.

The building program has been progressing quite well with site drawings, internal concepts and landscaping. We are
pleased to announce that the new constructions are to begin here at the College on September 30, the first week of
Term 3 holidays and are to be constructed in the main off site.
The College welcomes Precom Construction to the building project. Precom is a construction company that factory
builds their buildings prior to coming on site. Once constructed in the factory the modules are delivered to the College and then erected in a matter of days. Precom’s design and construction philosophies are well aligned with the
aims and objectives of the Year 9 Program. The following are excerpts from Precom’s website (http://
www.prebuilt.com.au/index.php):
“Precom undertakes commercial, multi residential and government projects. Precom is able to work with clients and their architect's on their individual projects to design and construct unique
relocatable building solutions to meet their needs. We understand
the importance of good design, and engage architects to work
collaboratively with us to ensure our buildings provide an efficient
spatial approach.
Precom constructions are designed with efficient floor plans that
avoid under-utilized spaces and encourage engagement with the
outdoors. Better designed plans mean that you spend less on
heating and cooling, and reduce the environmental impact of the
building”
“We adopt a green approach to all areas of our construction, using
plantation and recycled timber, water saving plumbing fittings and
energy efficient appliances, solar hot water and solar power panels, grey water recycling systems, reed beds and composting toilets. Your site is also better off with a Precom construction, remaining untouched while the construction takes place in our factory.
Our footing system means that most sites will not require any excavation, as slopes can remain as they are, and vegetation is
spared the months of constant traffic of normal building sites”.
It is hoped that we as a College community will be able to witness the entire construction of the new buildings from
the factory to our College site. This will begin by inviting students and members of staff along to visit Precom’s factory enabling us to document the whole process. And so it begins.

Yr 7 Music Night
The Year 7 Music night was presented last week in the College Ballroom and was enjoyed by a huge crowd on Tuesday night. I want to congratulate the Year 7 students involved on a mighty night of music and entertainment that was
on show for parents, friends and staff. I also want to thank and congratulate the members of the Symphonic Band
and String Ensemble, who assisted in the celebration of the night by performing so beautifully.
VCE Music Nights
The Music Department recently held its two VCE Music Nights as a celebration of music for all VCE music students
studying Units 1 and 3. These concerts were of a great significance as they were also a performance of assessment
for all students involved. Performing solo and ensemble works, the enthusiasm and energy of the students was enormous in an intimate but powerful two hour show. Before parents, friends and staff, the students presented a highly
entertaining and high quality demonstration of musicality. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate them all on
their fine work as we celebrate their skills and talents, knowing that they will be playing music for the rest of their
lives.
Music Soiree Evenings
This Thursday (June 20th), the piano and voice students of Ms Elaine Potter will present items in the Music Centre as
a way of celebrating their mighty achievements so far this semester. Similarly, the guitar students of Mr Shane Ryall
will be performing the following Tuesday (June 25th). Both evenings will be in the Music Centre at 7pm. All families
and friends are invited!
Holiday Habits!
More often than not, developing skill on your instrument of choice depends almost entirely on the interval lengths between practise sessions. If one plays only weekly, then it is hard to imagine any level of technical or musical progress. Alternatively, daily practise allows the mind and body to become familiar with the process of connecting with
the instrument or voice. The more “often” we do something, the more naturally we accept it – quite often without even
thinking about it! For most, daily movements and attitudes occur after a series of habitual or repetitive routines. It’s
not common to discuss our level of skill in things that we take for granted, like preparing breakfast, washing dishes,
cleaning our teeth, making a phone call, emailing or even speaking our own language! The great violinist, Yehudi
Menuhin, is quoted as saying that when he was a youngster, he would play the violin as frequently as a bird would
fly. In reality, he would play the violin in short but very frequent segments of each day, such was the routine of his
lifestyle. During the forthcoming school holidays, music students can make the most of their spare time by allowing
their instrument to become another part of their daily routines – leave it in a spot where it can be accessed easily and
play it in short bursts when time allows. Become more frequently connected to your instrument and you will feel great
results!

Back in March of 2012, the College Board approved the
‘Student Attendance Policy’ which set some clear expectations for students and parents.
Sunbury,
A major change was the requirement for parents to request approval (from the Principal) for student leave taken during the school term. Students already enjoy some
12 weeks of holiday time each year and our aim is to
maximise student attendance during the four school
terms. In most cases, such requests for leave during the
term will be approved. However, in some cases where
the leave is of a very long duration or the student is enrolled in VCE units 1-4, such leave will not be approved
and the days absent recorded as ‘unapproved’ leave.
Our youth will be holding a disco to raise funds for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival
in December.
Tickets cost $15 per person.
Pizza and drinks can be purchased on the night .
Parents are reminded to lodge an ‘Application for Holiday During Term’ form if they intend to take their children
out of school for a period of time during the school term
to go on holiday. The form must be completed and submitted at least four weeks before the leave commences.

SEASONS - GRIEF AND LOSS PROGRAM
Dear Parents,
Seasons is a peer support program for children and young people who are experiencing grief
and loss in their lives. This loss may be the result of a death, separation or divorce.
When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. Even though
death or divorce appears to be only a “grown-up” problem, it does have a profound effect on children. If a parent
dies or a divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, the children do also.
My recent Professional Development enabled me to be trained as a Seasons “companion”. This well-known Centacare program provides a peer support group for students experiencing grief, loss, separation and divorce in their
lives. It does not replace counseling services and is not a therapeutic program but a group support platform for
students 5 to 18 years of age.
The image of the tree as it changes over the seasons is symbolic with the seasonal tasks of loss, change and readjustment .
Seasons is widely used in primary schools and parishes for both adults and children and hopefully the 10 week
program will begin at Salesian in Term 3. Sessions will take place within the school program – at a suitable time
which is to be negotiated with class teachers.
We are calling for expressions of interest in the Seasons program. Therefore, if you are interested in your child participating in this program, please complete the attached reply and forward it on to me via email at
fvodak@scr.vic.edu.au or to the School Administration Office, by Friday 28 June, 2013. Should you wish to discuss
