@Reddam Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 7 Friday 15th June 2012 IN THIS ISSUE: Sports Art Space Careers ..…….Plus much more! Dear Parents / Caregivers, I trust everyone enjoyed the Queen’s Birthday weekend, perfect weather for staying indoors and studying for examinations. In last week’s assembly at Greater Union we were treated to Andre Pires playing Midnight by Joe Satriani on his guitar. The Year 8 Drama students have produced their own issue-based plays in class. They had to produce an original piece of theatre that was based around a social issue that they felt strongly about. Most groups explored bullying and in particular cyber-bullying. Rachel Bowen-James, Jared Silbermann, Issa O’Sullivan and Gal Kaminski shared their play with the school in assembly. It was perfectly in-line with the message of the week which explored moral courage, integrity and character. Integrity and moral courage were defined as knowing the difference between right and wrong and doing the right thing. A person of good character was defined as a person who did the right thing when nobody was looking. Students were encouraged to be people with integrity, moral courage and good character. For the first time in 27 years a NSW team has won the National Basketball Classic held every year in Victoria. Up against the best Basketball talent in the country, Tim and his team mates played out of their skin to secure a 57 – 51 win over the Sturt Sabres in the final on Monday in Dandenong. We must take our hats off to Tim and his team mates for an incredible result! Keep up the awesome work Tim! @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 7, Friday 15 th June 2012 Page 4 SYDNEY COMETS Busy Weekend For Sydney Comets Basketballers in Victoria Melbourne and its surrounding areas were given a taste of Reddam talent over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend with all our representative stars in action in various competitions. The competition was fierce and will no doubt benefit Reddam Basketball as these players return to their teams and pass on their knowledge and experience to their team mates. In addition to competing, such is the spirit and character of our basketballers and the Comets association that many teams lined up on Monday to support the Under 18’s boys win the final of the National Classic in Dandenong. We have no doubt many more of our Reddam players will push for a title in the National Classic in years to come. A tremendous effort by you all! Our Reddam Basketballers on show in Victoria over the weekend were: Matthew Sharpe, JJ Collins, Codie Cooper, Elijah Thomas, Hayley Collins, Tashia Overby, Emma Styles, Noah Thomas, Anton Baez-Anceski, Sonya Ivanovic, Tim Mili. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 7, Friday 15 th June 2012 Page 5 BASEBALL Hurwit Crushes Homeruns Galore this Season Sam Hurwit of Year 7 is smashing it in the baseball world at present having recently competed at the Australian Little League Baseball Championships on the Gold Coast with his Manly reps team. The boys did themselves very proud too, winning 3 out of their 4 pool games and making the quarter finals, eventually losing to tournament winners Perth. Perth will represent Australia at the Asian Pacific Little League Championships in Taiwan in July. Sam’s Manly team possesses a great deal of talent having narrowly missed out on winning the NSW State Little League Championships this year also. They are the first ever Manly team to make it to the Aussie titles and the boys will no doubt be looking to go even further at next year’s tournament. Sam, who is a diehard Red Sox fan, plays first base when fielding, is 4 th in the batting order and also acts as relief pitcher for his team. When not tied up with baseball Sam is always giving his all for the Reddam rugby team as well. Sam, you have done incredibly well this season and we are very proud of you! Well done! The IC was attended by 2300 children in Year 4 through to Year 12 from a number of countries around the world, including the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. The participants were invited to take part in the IC after placing in the top 3 in their national (or state for USA) competitions. Nisha Mc Arthur Year 7 placed 2nd in Australia in the scenario writing aspect of the 2011/2012 program which gained her an invitation. At the international level, Nisha was again placed 2nd and was awarded a very impressive trophy at the IC. The scenario writing on-site competition is very interesting. The children are placed in random groups of four where they are given two and a half hours to apply the research they had done to prepare to a hypothetical future scene. This year, the topic for the IC was 'pharmaceuticals'. Nisha had worked hard to understand the challenges that the world will face in this area, in years ahead of us. She also spent time preparing a narrative based on the idea of a 'super pill' to hone her skills for the on-site. Her team did not win that competition, but the experience she attained will stay with her forever, as will her trophy, no doubt. The event was truly beyond anything we could have imagined and the FPS program is far wider and far more diverse than the scenario writing element, The most touching aspect of the program is the Community Problem Solving where students look at their local community needs, devise an action plan to address the issue based on the FPS six-step method, and then head into their community to action their plan. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 7, Friday 15 th June 2012 Page 8 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE The senior division individual winner, from Virginia, has addressed the need for vaccination and immunisation in her community. Creating awareness about the threats of not being immunised, she managed to get the mayor of her town to declare a day in March as annual immunisation awareness. She has educated thousands of children about the need to take control of aspects of one's health that one can. A team from a fairly poor community in the USA decided to see if they could make a difference to those people who were living on the fringes of society. Aptly named 'Second Chance', this is a project that has redistributed over $661 000 worth of new goods, sponsored by companies, to the needy. Moreover, this team has also begun a second-hand clothing shop which is run from a converted garage, to clothe those who have nothing. What was most impressive about this project was how they addressed the need for dignity for those receiving help to be maintained. Their little garage is like a boutique for these people, so that even the poorest can have respect and hold onto their dignity. A junior division team from New Zealand, Project TEACH, addressed the need for education of the parent body within their school. As most of their students come from non-English speaking homes, they identified a huge gap in age communication between teachers and caregivers when it came to students' progress and needs. They were trained to teach English and held sessions to teach the parents and grandparents of students English so that communication could be improved and thus benefit the students' education and the caregivers' experiences with the school. They also addressed computer literacy, another area of concern, teaching parents and grandparents how to use computers, thus improving communication further. And to think, these are 12 and 13 year olds! My mind boggles at the impact that these students are having in their local communities and around the world. Two teams, one from Malaysia and one from the USA, worked together on Project Radical to dispel the myths that the each other holds about their cultures. They aimed to teach each other about the 'real Malaysia' and the 'real USA'. Their example: the Malaysians want the Americans to know that they don't live in trees; the Americans want the Malaysians to know that MTV is not an accurate portrayal of their society. They believe, by breaking the misconceptions, cultural barriers will fall. How right they are! Continued…….. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 7, Friday 15 th June 2012 Page 9 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Everyone at the conference seemed to be functioning on a level so different from the way the world we see on TV. Where the world sees differences, these children saw similarities; where the world sees language barriers, these children saw ladders to overcome them; where the world sees problems, these children saw solutions. The experience was truly life changing and Nisha and I are looking forward to bringing back ideas, motivation and forward thinking to Reddam. Kerry Garner DANCING Congratulations to 2003 Reddam House student Aric Yegudkin who is dancing with Zoe Cramond from packed to the rafters on Dancing with the Stars. We wish them every success for all their subjects and hope that they achieve the results that they deserve. Last week we received wonderful feedback from “The Sydney Morning Herald” which, together with “The Sydney Writers’ Festival” runs a competition for young writers. The school received accolades for the number of entries received and also for the high standard of the creative writing at Reddam. We congratulate all the students involved. On Thursday 21st June, the Year 12 Advanced English students will be attending a production of the set text Hamlet at the Seymour Centre. This should be very entertaining and also provide the students with an even greater understanding of the play which they studied in Term 2. We hope that all students have a well-earned rest during the holidays and look forward to seeing them back ready for the second semester. Michele Frank and the English Department.
