TURKEY
TROT TIME
Dear Families,
It’s that time of year again! Every November, each 3rd through 5th grader at
Whittier School is invited to participate in our Turkey Trot. This year’s event will
be Thursday, November 19. The trot is after school and consists of a run three
times around Taylor Park. Students will meet in the gym after school on
Thursday, November 19, and walk over to the park.
We hope your child will join us to show school spirit, get a bit of exercise, and
have fun. As you may already know, the fastest boy and girl in each grade level
will bring home a turkey! All other participants will be entered in a raffle for a
turkey, so everyone has a chance to bring home a bird.
Please remember that all participants need to be picked up at Taylor Park
immediately after the event. The event will last about 30 minutes. Please return
permission slips by Tuesday, November 17.

A special holiday fundraising program from
Geppetto’s Toy Box
For the past couple of years we have jumped into the fray with national retail
chains by having a Black Friday sale. As you can imagine, it is a really crazy day
for us! However, it has never felt like the “right” fit for us. From the day we opened
ten years ago, our goal was to find and provide quality playthings that supported a
healthy, happy childhood for the children of our area while being an important part
of the fabric of our Community. Like everyone else, we love holidays and the ritual
and meaning they provide for families. Everyone has their favorites, and the one
that tops the list in our home is Thanksgiving. Everything about it resonates with
us: stopping to be grateful, cooking together, seeing the good in life, all while
celebrating the most important relationships, especially in our culture’s fast-paced,
technology driven world. Although we recognize that we serve the consumer and
contribute to a healthy local economy, participating in the Black Friday frenzy never
truly resonated with us. At the same time, we understand the value that these
savings events provide for families. So we are turning it all on its ear.

organization helps raise needed funds for programs and supplies. But you get

in-stock products for a whole week! Visit as many times as you like between

purchase to be eligible for the discount. With any luck, the pressure to shop the
day after Thanksgiving will dissipate leaving you gained time for togetherness, play
and gratitude for each other’s company that only the holidays provide (maybe even

to Whittier PTO) or cash and your Card will be delivered to your child’s class.
• Purchase the Card directly from Stephanie Thomas who will be selling them on
the playground both before and after school (weather permitting).

Dear Whittier Families!
The WISE Planning Team wants to remind you that the Winter Session for WISE
begins on January 11th. Registration is coming up fast and the dates are
December 7th-16th.
We also wanted to let you know we are bringing back a JR. BRAVO! Class!
Your children just saw a showcase with the cast of Beauty and the Beast from
Brooks Middle School! Many students in that production are not only alums from
Whittier, but also alums from the first JR. BRAVO! Classes offered through
WISE. Whittier is the only elementary school in Oak Park offering this program
as an after school enrichment class!
For the Winter session, JR. BRAVO! will be offering a Musical Theater class
with a showcase for parents and friends at the end of the session brought to you
by the same directing teams that work on the productions you have seen at
Brooks!
If your children were inspired by what they saw, mark your calendars to register
for this great opportunity of self-expression, taking risks, making great friends
and having tons of fun!
